  • Keller’s Korner: Ziggy Marley Brings Reggae, Unity, And Jewish Spirit To Hard Rock Live | sun-times

Keller’s Korner: Ziggy Marley Brings Reggae, Unity, And Jewish Spirit To Hard Rock Live By Neil Keller Oct 15, 2026 Welcome To Keller’s Korner. There Was Electricity In The Air At Hard Rock Live On Friday, October 2nd, 2026, As Ziggy Marley And Gov’t Mule Took The Stage For Their Co‑Headlining Dreaming The Same Dream Tour. Fans Arrived Ready For Reggae Rhythms, Southern Rock Jams, And The Unmistakable Warmth That Follows Ziggy Wherever He Performs. For me, the night carried an added layer of meaning: Ziggy Marley’s deep and sincere connection to Judaism, a part of his identity that often surprises fans but has shaped his life for decades. A Childhood Shaped by Music, Culture, and Turbulence Born David Marley in Kingston, Jamaica in 1968, Ziggy is the eldest son of Bob and Rita Marley. His father gave him the nickname “Ziggy,” and from childhood he was surrounded by music, culture, and purpose. Bob personally taught him guitar and drums at age ten, while Rita — a Cuban‑born reggae singer — reinforced the family’s artistic foundation. Ziggy’s early years were not without turmoil. In 1976, after an assassination attempt on his parents, the family briefly relocated to Wilmington, Delaware, where Ziggy attended elementary school before returning to Jamaica. Bob Marley died tragically young at 36 from Melanoma, but Rita — now 80 — remains a powerful cultural force. Outside of music, Ziggy loved soccer and “running the mountains,” a family tradition he recalls with affection. A Global Artist with Purpose Ziggy Marley is far more than a Reggae performer. He is a songwriter, producer, philanthropist, and author whose work spans continents and generations. He led Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers until 2002, releasing eight albums before launching a successful solo career. His trophy case includes eight Grammy Awards and even a Daytime Emmy. Philanthropy runs deep in the Marley family. Ziggy supports the Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment (URGE) Foundation, which funds health, education, and environmental programs for children in Jamaica, North America, and Africa. In 2024, he served as a producer for the acclaimed biographical film Bob Marley: One Love. The following year, he won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album for One Love. He has authored children’s books, including Pajammin, and toured North America on the Do the Reggae Tour with Burning Spear. Ziggy Marley’s Jewish Connection While Bob Marley was not Jewish, some historians note possible Syrian Jewish ancestry on his paternal grandmother’s side. Ziggy’s own Jewish ties, however, are clear and deeply personal. He is married to Orly Agai, an Israeli of Iranian Jewish descent and Former Vice President at the William Morris Agency. She now manages Ziggy’s career. Together they raise their four children — Judah, Gideon, Abraham, and Isaiah — celebrating Jewish holidays alongside their Rastafarian heritage. Ziggy has spoken openly and joyfully about observing Jewish traditions: “I have to, I don’t have a choice,” he once joked. “I love it, everything.” He admires Judaism’s commitment to preserving history: “What really impacts me is that the culture keeps their history alive… I’m very jealous of that, because my culture, we don’t do that.” Most compelling is Ziggy’s explanation that his connection to Judaism predates his marriage: “My father, my Rastafarian culture, is tightly linked to Jewish culture. We have a strong connection from when I was a young boy, reading the Tanach, the Bible, the Old Testament.” Ziggy has visited Israel multiple times, collaborated with Israeli musicians, and publicly supported peace initiatives. In 2019, he was honored at the Creative Community for Peace Gala for promoting unity through music. In 2021, he recorded an acoustic version of “Shalom Salaam” with the Jerusalem Youth Chorus, advocating coexistence between Israeli and Palestinian communities. Following the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, Ziggy joined more than 700 Hollywood figures in signing an open letter supporting Israel. Gov’t Mule: A Perfect Musical Counterbalance The 2026 Dreaming the Same Dream Tour marks the first full collaboration between Ziggy Marley and Gov’t Mule, though Ziggy and frontman Warren Haynes have known each other for years. Gov’t Mule — formed in 1994 by Haynes, Allen Woody, and Matt Abts — has released nine studio albums and countless live recordings. Their Southern Rock jam style blends surprisingly well with Ziggy’s Reggae rhythms. Ziggy summed up the collaboration perfectly: “It’s gonna be a great jam session being on tour with Warren and the crew. I’m looking forward to the vibes.” The vibes were indeed strong at Hard Rock Live. Behind the Scene Emily Cajigas, Public Relations Specialist for Seminole Hard Rock, has worked for the organization for over five years. When asked what she enjoys most about her role, she said: “The shows. It is really interesting to see how each show is slightly different.” Shimon Suissa, born in Israel and now living in Hollywood, Florida, came excited to see Ziggy’s blend of Reggae and spirituality. Shimon plays drums and percussion in his band Reggae Lou & The Kind Budz, which performs Bob Marley cover band across South Florida. His band’s website: www.ReggaeLou.com Gregory Lansky, a criminal defense attorney, discovered Reggae in high school and college. “Bob Marley was my favorite,” he said. “Reggae is positive music. They were into equal rights and justice, which inspired me. It helped shape my belief system.” He previously saw Ziggy perform in New York and at Jones Beach Theater. His favorite songs include “Tomorrow People,” “Look Who’s Dancing,” and “Good Time” from One Bright Day. A Night of Music, Identity, and Unity Ziggy Marley’s performance at Hard Rock Live was more than a concert — it was a celebration of culture, identity, and unity. His connection to Judaism is not a footnote but a meaningful part of his life story, woven into his music, his family, and his worldview. For fans of Reggae, for fans of peace, and for fans of Jewish heritage, Ziggy Marley stands as a bridge between traditions — proof that music can carry history, faith, and hope all at once. • Finding Forever Families - Meet Luna And Topaz, Two Pets Waiting For Love | sun-times

Finding Forever Families - Meet Luna And Topaz, Two Pets Waiting For Love South Florida Sun Times May 15, 2025 In A World Where Thousands Of Pets Are Seeking Homes, Every Animal Has A Story—And Sometimes, All It Takes Is A Little Attention To Change Their Lives Forever. At The Humane Society Of Broward County, Two Very Special Animals, Luna And Topaz, Are Waiting For Someone Like You To See Their Potential And Open Their Heart And Home. If you’re searching for a loyal, loving and adventure-ready dog to add to your family, allow us to introduce you to Luna (ID 697634). Luna is a six-year-old shepherd mix with a golden heart and a gentle soul. Though she’s past the puppy stage, Luna has all the charm and energy of a younger dog—plus the bonus of being house-trained, calm and well-behaved. Luna’s journey hasn’t been easy. She was surrendered to another shelter, where despite her sunny disposition, she sat day after day without any adoption interest. Luckily, her story didn’t end there. She was transferred to the Humane Society of Broward County in Fort Lauderdale, where the staff quickly fell in love with her affectionate nature and sweet demeanor. Now, Luna is hoping her next chapter will be the one where she finally finds her forever home. Don’t be fooled by her age—Luna still loves to play, explore and spend time with her people. She walks beautifully on a leash and knows a few basic commands, making her an ideal companion for families who want a dog they can take to the park, out for hikes, or even just for a relaxing stroll through the neighborhood. Luna’s greatest joy is being with her humans, she thrives on attention, belly rubs and cuddles. Her warm eyes and wagging tail are constant reminders that even the smallest act of kindness can change a life. Sadly, Luna has been at the shelter for over a month with no takers. Many potential adopters overlook her simply because she isn’t a tiny puppy. But anyone who’s owned a dog knows that adult dogs offer just as much love—often more—and they come with the added bonus of being past the teething and potty-training stage. Thanks to the generosity of Real Res, Luna’s adoption fee has been fully sponsored, so the only thing standing between her and a happy ending is someone willing to give her a chance. While Luna’s spirit is bright and resilient, a more delicate soul is also waiting for love just a few kennels away. Meet Topaz (ID 697955), a stunning 11-month-old feline with a soft, velvety coat and eyes full of longing. Topaz is the kind of cat who blooms in the right environment. At the shelter, the constant noise and unfamiliar faces have been stressful for her—but give her a quiet home and a little time and you’ll see her true personality shine. According to her previous owner, Topaz is a delightful mix of playful and serene. She enjoys curling up in cozy spots, chasing the occasional toy and—perhaps best of all—loves receiving belly rubs. She’s also great with children and small dogs, making her a versatile addition to a variety of households. Topaz’s sensitive nature means she’ll need a patient adopter who understands that good things take time. The Humane Society staff are confident that once she feels safe and loved, Topaz will form a strong and lasting bond with her new family. Her capacity for affection is enormous—she just needs the right person to bring it out. So, are you ready to make a difference? Whether you're looking for a dog to jog beside you or a cat to curl up on your lap, Luna and Topaz represent the best of what shelter pets have to offer: resilience, affection and the ability to bring joy into any home. The Humane Society of Broward County is open for adoptions every day at 11:00 a.m., located at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312. If you’d like to meet Luna or Topaz or any of the other wonderful animals waiting for a home, start by filling out the pre-adoption application online at: www.humanebroward.com under the "Adopt" tab. Questions? You can call the shelter at: (954) 989-3977 for more information. Adopting a pet is more than just bringing home a companion — it’s giving a second chance, building a bond that will last a lifetime and receiving unconditional love in return. Luna and Topaz have so much love to give. All they need now is someone like you. Could that someone be you? See Luna - ID#: 697634 at the Humane Society of Broward County. Previous Next
