  • An Immersive Gastro-tainment Experience: Bagatelle Restaurant Evokes The French Mediterranean In Miami's South Beach

An Immersive Gastro-tainment Experience: Bagatelle Restaurant Evokes The French Mediterranean In Miami's South Beach By Merilee Kern, MBA
June 21, 2024 Share For those desiring to have more than a meal and, instead, experience an all-encompassing epicurean adventure should look no further than Bagatelle in the South Beach District of Miami. Situated within the iconic The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach, Bagatelle Miami is revolutionizing the region’s luxury dining scene by offering a fusion of French Mediterranean cuisine and lavish décor amidst an energetic and vibrant atmosphere that truly captures the essence of South Beach. This culinary sanctuary, nestled within an Art Deco landmark, is elevating the city’s dining and nightlife scene to exciting heights from one tasty—and perfectly over-the-top—destination. Bagatelle, renowned worldwide for its French Mediterranean delicacies and lively ambiance, is led by the expertise of Corporate Executive Chef Rocco Seminara and Executive Chef Jimmy de Almeida. Together they have crafted a menu that infuses Miami flair into each dish. From mouthwatering starters like Eggplant Parmigiana in a Parmigiano Reggiano Cream Sauce and Yukon Potato Stuffed with Pan Seared Foie Gras with a Truffle Albufera sauce, and a selection of available Caviars, the experience starts off decidedly strong. The main course presents delicious confusion as all of the options tantalize. Even so, my personal penchant are the pasta entreés, with the Lobster Fettuccine with a Basil Infused Shellfish Broth prepared tableside—and the Tiny Raviolis " Del Plin" with Castelmagno Cheese and topped with an abundance of freshly-shaved Black Truffle—paramount among them. To finish, whether you want something decadent like the Jivara Chocolate Pizzetta with Caramelized Hazelnuts—named a World Champion Pizza Dessert in 2019 by Manon Santi—or something light and refreshing like a Lychee Sorbet, there’s certainly something for every palate. Overall, the Bagatelle Miami menu on the whole offers a symphony of flavors combining top-quality ingredients with culinary ingenuity. However this establishment goes far beyond offering expertly designed dishes. Here, it’s not just dinner; it’s a multi-sensory, wholly immersive gastro-tainment experience. Beyond the Plate: A Holistic Experience Bagatelle Miami offers more than a culinary adventure; it provides a complete journey where guests can groove to the beats, dance right at their tables and revel in an eclectic and vibrant musical program curated by talented DJs. This adds to Bagatelle’s trademark ambiance. Throughout the venue performers and dancers of various styles captivate your imagination while you savor Premium Spirits and indulge in elevated victuals. With its Fusion of French Mediterranean Cuisine, personalized service, lively entertainment and “Joie de Vivre,” Bagatelle Miami has become a one-of-a-kind destination making waves in Miami’s eclectic dining and nightlife scene. A Feast for the Senses: Décor That Delights Designed by acclaimed French Designer Sam Baron, the 200-seat venue encompasses a conservatory, bar area, dining room as well as a private dining space. Each area showcases Baron’s talent in blending Art Deco charm with Bagatelle’s lively spirit. The interiors feature a combination of greens and blues complemented by neutral tones, natural wood elements and elegant gold accents. Luxurious materials like marble and brass elevate the elegance of the space while creating an atmosphere that radiates warmth and conviviality. Baron’s attention to detail can be seen in every aspect of the design, from the white canopy structure that pays homage to Miami’s architectural heritage to the intricate ceiling paneling in the welcoming lobby and lounge area. The main dining room boasts soaring ceilings, floor to ceiling curtains and a stunning collection of brass chandeliers that converge to create an extravagant yet intimate ambiance. Within this space, alcoves offer pockets of privacy while a cozy salon provides a retreat for patrons. Specially designed curved furnishings, luxurious velvet upholstery, delicate canework and exquisite brass accents pay tribute to French Design traditions while still embracing a coastal lifestyle aesthetic. Culinary Maestros Command the Kitchen Leading the kitchen are virtuosos who excel in their craft. Corporate Executive Chef Rocco Seminara, who hails from Provence, brings flavors of Mediterranean Cuisine to the forefront. With accolades like the Neptune prize in 2016 under his belt, Chef Rocco’s culinary journey has taken him through establishments such as Hôtel Martinez in Cannes and Hôtel de Paris in Monte Carlo. Collaborating with Chef Rocco is Executive Chef Jimmy de Almeida, whose global culinary background spans St. Tropez, Geneva, Abu Dhabi and Paris. Together they curate the Bagatelle menu that showcases the duo’s creativity and unwavering commitment to quality. • What does Archaeology say about the Jewish Claim to Israel?

What does Archaeology say about the Jewish Claim to Israel? By Marc Yahrshevsky July 19, 2024 Share Archaeology is a remarkable tool for uncovering the layers of history buried beneath our feet. For the Jewish people, the ancient city of Jerusalem holds a profound and multifaceted significance, both religiously and culturally. Through meticulous excavation and study, archaeological findings have consistently supported and illuminated the deep historical connections between the Jewish people and Jerusalem, offering tangible proof of their long-standing presence in the land given to them by none other than G-d Himself. There will be a Two-Part series of a ZOOM Archaeological Seminar about excavations in Jerusalem and the City of David and it will even include audio-visuals of the excavations! The multimedia zoom presentation will take place on Thursday, July 25th and Thursday August 8th at 3:00 p.m. – 4:15 p.m. Keep in mind that this is the single most contentious issue in the Middle East conflict between Jews and Arabs. “This presentation will uncover powerful and convincing case for the Biblical story for the Jewish claim to Israel – even for those who have a hard time believing,” says Rabbi Smith, Director of the Levi Yitzchok Retiree Academy. Rabbi Avrohom Stolik, the presenter, has received wide acclaim as a biblical archaeological scholar. In the presentation, he will share his extensive knowledge of Jewish history and secular Bible study, as well as his passion for biblical archaeology. He has created a unique presentation that includes imagery, diagrams, and videos that can benefit anyone, whether he or she has been to Israel before or has any background in history or archaeology. The Retiree Academy runs numerous programs and educational programs throughout the year including Talmud, Books of the Prophets, Code of Jewish Law, Chassidic Philosophy and Mysticism, and much more. They just started offering a Conversational Yiddish Seminar as well. Visit: www.JewishRetiree.com - Or call: (954) 458-6000 for more information about their programs. Archaeology confirms the historical accounts found in religious and historical texts and enriches our understanding of the Jewish people's enduring connection to Jerusalem. Each artifact, structure, and inscription serves as a tangible link to the past, providing irrefutable evidence of the deep-rooted presence and influence of Jewish civilization in Jerusalem. Join this seminar and find out about your heritage and these new exciting findings. The cost for this Two-Part Archaeology Series is only $36 and Retirees can get a scholarship. • A Rare Reset In The New Dietary Guidelines - With More Work Ahead | sun-times

A Rare Reset In The New Dietary Guidelines - With More Work Ahead By Bret Scher, MD Apr 23, 2026 The Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture just released the 2025 - 2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, resetting the federal nutrition advice that shapes how Americans eat. As a physician, I have seen firsthand how federal recommendations emphasizing low-fat, carbohydrate-heavy diets coincided with skyrocketing rates of obesity and diet-related disease. Against that record, the updated guidelines represent a much-needed course correction. By refocusing on whole foods from both plant and animal sources, the guidance centers nutrient density and food quality -- recognizing vegetables and fruits alongside meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy as core components of a healthy diet. That emphasis on real, whole foods is reinforced by a restoration of protein to a central role. Treated for years as secondary to carbohydrate intake, the updated guidelines recognize protein's importance in preserving lean muscle, supporting metabolic health, improving satiety, and promoting healthy aging. The guidelines also take a more direct approach to refined carbohydrates and added sugars by more clearly acknowledging the metabolic risks of their excess intake. In fact, for the first time, the guidelines explicitly acknowledge that Americans with certain chronic diseases may benefit from therapeutic low-carbohydrate dietary approaches. That recognition aligns with decades of evidence demonstrating improvement -- and in many cases reversal -- of conditions such as Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, and Fatty Liver Disease. This shift is particularly important given today's health landscape. More than 75% of U.S. adults are overweight or have Obesity. Roughly 93% show signs of metabolic dysfunction, and nearly one in three adolescents has prediabetes. With that in mind, the focus now turns to implementation. That work should include clearer guidance on tailoring fat, protein, and carbohydrate intake to individual needs. This need for clarity is especially evident when it comes to dietary fat. The guidelines' emphasis on whole, nutrient-dense foods -- including meat, fish, eggs, and dairy -- is welcome. At the same time, the long-standing recommendation to limit saturated fat to 10% of daily calories -- which these guidelines retained -- will require careful interpretation in the context of whole food sources and overall dietary patterns. For Americans following lower-carbohydrate approaches, who rely more heavily on protein and fats for energy as they reduce carbohydrate intake, rigid fat caps can make these diets harder to follow. Other areas would also benefit from continued refinement. The updated guidelines still recommend two to four servings of grains per day. In practice, particularly within federal programs, this can shape implementation choices that favor refined and processed grain products over truly fiber-rich whole foods. On the implementation side, a similar opportunity exists with added sugars. While the new guidelines don't outright ban added sugars, they clarify that no amount is recommended as part of a healthy diet. Ideally, school lunch programs should respond by further limiting sweetened cereals, sugary yogurts, and flavored milk, especially as childhood obesity and metabolic disease rise. The 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines mark real progress. They recognize the central role of diet quality, acknowledge the importance of metabolic health, and move federal nutrition policy closer to what modern science and clinical experience support. The task now is to build on that progress through thoughtful implementation and continued refinement. Nutrition policy should help Americans prevent and manage chronic disease -- and these guidelines provide a strong foundation to do so. • Attention Condo Associations: Here Are Some Steps To Ward Off Structural Issues

Attention Condo Associations: Here Are Some Steps To Ward Off Structural Issues By Kerri Sisson and Dave Barthels August 19, 2021 Share While the collapse of the Champlain Towers, was likely due, to the forces of multiple, yet undetermined factors, there are steps, building owners and operators, can take right now, to reduce the risk, of potentially, catastrophic building damage. Owners, HOAs and residents alike, are re-evaluating the structure of their buildings, along the South Florida coast, since the collapse of the Champlain Towers. Modern building codes and structural engineering safeguards, including building assessments, monitoring and capital upgrades, are designed to prevent, such rare, collapses. Modern building codes and structural engineering, have made U.S. buildings, extremely safe places to live and work. That being said, all buildings require maintenance and if signs of structural damage, become apparent, immediate action should be taken. Continual maintenance and inspections, are critical to the operations of any building and the safety, of, all inhabitants. While the collapse of the Champlain Towers was likely, due to the forces of multiple, yet, undetermined factors, there are steps to building owners and operators, can take right now, to reduce the risk of potentially, catastrophic building damages. Building owners, operators and homeowner’s associations (HOAs), will want to consider the following primary actions, to ward off, any major, future structural issues: Third-party professionals, should conduct annual inspections to identify issues, leading to deficiencies or damages. This includes the assessment, of major structural components, by proficient, structural engineers. Take corrective action, when issues are identified and document, all maintenance or repairs. Inspectors and structural engineers, should be required to sign off on building design changes, renovations or upgrades, which may affect, the building’s structure. Adding loading to a roof, moving walls or other changes, can adversely, affect a building. Conduct post-event inspections, following major weather events like hurricanes and other major storms to identify any damage, including even minor things, like blocked drains, which can lead to water ponding. Seek location-specific expertise from inspectors, who are familiar with the signs of structural damage due to local weather, such as the damage salt water can cause to buildings, near the ocean. Monitor damaged building components. In high-rise towers, regular inspections should include identification of concrete spalling. Corrective action, should be taken in places, where concrete has fallen off or became detached, especially, in structural columns. If there is deterioration of reinforcing steel, immediately, you can have a structural engineer, determine the extent, of the damage. Identify and carefully monitor wall cracks. New buildings may settle and this should be monitored. Cracks that grow, spread or otherwise show deterioration, should be addressed, immediately. Build capital improvements into your budget. Institute financial planning for major improvements and capital expenditures, in all building maintenance plans. Identify risks early. Train maintenance staff and leadership, to recognize potential signs of risk and therefore, identify issues between annual inspections. Document these assessments and record actions, taken to reduce both property and liability risk, for HOAs and their residents. Review insurance policies, annually. Owners and HOA boards, will often look to limit costs, by reducing their building’s Property, Umbrella, General Liability and Director’s and Officers (D&O) overages. To prevent this, conduct a formal review of your insurance policies and coverage now, by a trusted insurance professional and repeat it, annually. While taking these nine measures, does not guarantee, that a building, will not experience a catastrophic event, they will greatly reduce the risk and give building residents, owners, operators and HOAs, peace of mind, for today and tomorrow. • Fear Of Self-Driving Cars On The Rise: Drivers Increasingly Anxious As Autonomous Technology Advances

Fear Of Self-Driving Cars On The Rise: Drivers Increasingly Anxious As Autonomous Technology Advances March 16, 2023 Share Concerns about self-driving cars are significantly higher than last year, according to an annual automated vehicle survey just released by AAA. The survey reveals 68% of drivers are afraid of riding in a self-driving vehicle. That’s up from 55% in 2022 and the largest annual increase since 2020. “We did not expect such a dramatic shift in consumer concerns from previous years,” said Mark Jenkins, Public Relations Manager for AAA - The Auto Club Group. “Though it isn’t entirely surprising, given the number of high-profile crashes that have recently occurred from over-reliance on current vehicle technologies.” Dispelling Confusion Around Automated Vehicles Even with advancements made in recent years, these findings suggest the need to dispel confusion around automated vehicles. AAA’s survey found that nearly one in ten drivers believe they can buy a vehicle that drives itself while they sleep. That is not true. While this perception could stem from social media videos of drivers apparently misusing driver assistance technology, our survey shows that the names manufacturers have given their vehicle systems are confusing consumers. AAA found that 22% of Americans expect driver support systems, with names like Autopilot, ProPILOT or Pilot Assist to have the ability to drive the car by itself without any supervision, indicating a gap in consumer understanding. “Most new vehicles are equipped with some level of advanced driver assistance technology, which can enhance the safety of motorists if used properly,” Jenkins continued. “However, it’s important to clarify that there are currently no vehicles available for purchase that allow someone to fully disengage from the task of driving.” What Are Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)? Consumers are not entirely opposed to advanced vehicle technology. In fact, six in ten U.S. drivers would “definitely” or “probably” want these systems in their next car purchase. Examples of ADA’S include: blind spot warning, adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking. Check out AAA’s, Clearing The Confusion, which provides naming and descriptions of ADA’S in a consistent, easy-to-understand manner. Active Driving Assistance (ADA) combines the tasks of braking, accelerating and steering through a combined use of adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assistance. ADA is classified as Level 2 automation - the highest level of vehicle automation available for purchase by the public. This technology is not meant to replace the driver. Recent AAA research has found inconsistencies with ADA performance, reinforcing the need for a driver to remain fully engaged. What Is A Fully Self-Driving Vehicle? A vehicle capable of operating without human involvement. A human driver is not required to control the vehicle at any time, nor required to be present in the vehicle while moving. These vehicles are not available for purchase by consumers and are classified as Level 5 automation as defined by the Society Of Automotive Engineers. “AAA seeks to partner with automakers to create greater consistency across the industry,” said Greg Brannon, Director Of Automotive Research for AAA. “Together, we can help consumers understand the type of technology their vehicle has along with how, when and where to use these systems, which will ultimately build trust in the vehicles of the future.” < Previous News Next News >

  • Pedestrian And Bicycle Safety: Sunny Isles Beach PD Participates In High Visibility Enforcement Program

Pedestrian And Bicycle Safety: Sunny Isles Beach PD Participates In High Visibility Enforcement Program www.sibfl.net/2023-hve/ March 9, 2023 Share Miami-Dade County ranks in the top 25 counties in Florida for traffic crashes resulting in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists. To help reverse this trend, the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department is participating in the Florida Department Of Transportation High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) Program aimed at educating motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians on Florida’s Traffic Laws to improve safety on our roads. All through the month of May 2023, the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department will have additional officers on patrol at specific corridors with a high occurrence of pedestrians and bicyclists’ crashes. Special attention will be directed towards increasing awareness of the dangerous behaviors that are contributing to serious and fatal injuries at these locations. Officers will look for drivers speeding, failing to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, conducting improper turns or signal violations and using hand-held devices while driving. Officers also will watch for pedestrians who cross the street illegally or fail to yield to motorists who have right-of-way. Bicyclists will be stopped for riding against traffic, riding at night without lights or not abiding by the same laws as motor vehicles. Officers will issue warnings and citations only when appropriate. “Whether you are on foot, behind the wheel, or on a bike, you have a responsibility to share the road safely,” said Chief Edward Santiago. “Understanding the rules of the road helps ensure we all arrive at our destination safely and makes our streets safer for everyone.” Funding for this program is provided through a contract with the University Of North Florida’s Institute Of Police Technology And Management (IPTM) funded by the Florida Department Of Transportation. The Sunny Isles Beach Police Department will receive funds for overtime hours for officers to conduct operations and for special training on Florida’s bicycle and pedestrian laws, procedures and best practices. To keep the public safe, the Sunny Isles Beach PD offers the following tips when biking, driving or walking: • Drivers: Obey speed limits, never drive impaired and always watch for pedestrians and bicyclists. • Bicyclists: Obey traffic laws, ride in the direction of traffic and use lights when riding at night. • Pedestrians: Cross in crosswalks or at intersections, obey pedestrian signals and make sure you are visible to drivers when walking at night. The Bicycle and Pedestrian Focused Initiative The Florida Department Of Transportation (FDOT) developed Florida’s Bicycle/Pedestrian Focused Initiative in 2011 to lead all efforts to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety in the state. The public education campaign was branded “Alert Today Florida.” The goal of this initiative is to eliminate traffic crashes on Florida’s roads that result in serious or fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists. Objectives include: advancing data collection, analysis and evaluation to guide the implementation of comprehensive safety strategies directed towards areas with the highest representation of traffic crashes resulting in serious or fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists. Additional information about pedestrian and bicycle safety is available at: www.alerttodayflorida.com < Previous News Next News >
