  • Year End Reflections: This Time Of Year We All Need To Do Our Part

Year End Reflections: This Time Of Year We All Need To Do Our Part By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper December 1, 2021 Share “This symbol of light has become a universal recognition of how good outweighs evils. It also has become the symbol that all it takes is one light to light up darkness.” Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper Happy Holidays!! It is so hard to believe how fast the year is coming to end. As we celebrate Chanukah over the next few days, it is a great time to remember how the Jews overcame adversity. After visiting Israel, I have found an even stronger connection to my religion. To those of you that may not know the reason why we celebrate here is the short version. After the second distraction of the Jewish Temple on the Holy Mount. The Maccabees rose up against the Greek and Syrian oppressors in 200 BC. They had killed many Jews for practicing their religion and built an altar to worship Greek Gods. They fought and won but that was not the miracle. The miracle was that in every temple there is a light that is always lit. In this case the candles that were lit, only had enough oil to burn for one day. While they were desperately recovering from civil unrest and trying to find the necessary provisions, the candles actually burned for 8 days. This is what became the Hanukkah miracle. This symbol of light has become a universal recognition of how good outweighs evils. It also has become the symbol that all it takes is one light to light up darkness. As we are still dealing with the reality of COVID-19 and it has been somewhat of a relief to get out and about over the past weeks. We do need to remember that COVID-19 and other Variants are still out there. We all need to get the Vaccine. This weekend I had a chance to speak with my dear friend who is a doctor in Philly and has not been to Florida for two years. The Vaccine is so important because it will help prevent and stop the virus from finding people as its hosts by not having the Vaccine, you are welcoming the Virus into your system. As this process continues, the Virus will find ways to continue on. The Virus may become weakened but then it reinvents itself and this is why we have Variants. Israel and the City Of London, England have closed down again. The City of Denver is now requiring masks again. To stop this insanity, we all need to do our part. My friend and I were talking about what our parents may say about this. Being war Veterans and going off to fight. They leave their families and friends to fight for the great good and for freedom to prevail. To think they gave it their all and we still have individuals that will not simply go and get Vaccinated. This past Sunday there was a wonderful event hosted by the Chabad of Golden Isles. They did a Menorah Lighting and a Boat Parade around the City. This weekend at The Big Easy Casino which is located at 831 Federal Highway has provided their venue to host the 42nd Annual Chanukah Festival presented by the Chabad of South Broward. The event starts at 7:00 p.m. and guests are welcome to use their cars, live in concert will be world Famous Mordechai Shapiro. Our Parks and Recreation Department is excited to announce that the Memorial Partners H2U will be back at the Cultural Center for all of our daytime activities. We are also happy to announce the OB Johnson Gym, Fitness Center and Computer Lab which are also open. Foster Park Library is open from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please follow all of the guidelines when attending our parks. Our Department is also looking to hire lifeguards. Please visit our web-site for this job opportunity and others. As a local and qualified resident, your application will get preferential points. Please let us all unite in peace over this Holiday Season! Be kind and courteous because it doesn’t cost you anything but means the world to those you treat with kindness. • Cruising Through 'The Change': A Hysterical Voyage Into Menopause And Friendship

Cruising Through 'The Change': A Hysterical Voyage Into Menopause And Friendship October 18, 2023 Share All aboard, ladies! It's time to set sail once again with our beloved characters from Menopause The Musical in its uproarious sequel, Menopause The Musical 2: Cruising Through 'The Change.' Five years after their fateful encounter in a department store, these four women are back, and this time, they're taking us on a hilarious and heartfelt journey through the ups and downs of Menopause. This production combines laughter, camaraderie, and a fabulous soundtrack of parodied hits from the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s, making it an event that you won't want to miss. The Joyful Return Of Our Beloved Characters The story picks up where we left off, with four women who bonded over the shared experience of Menopause. But this time, they're not just navigating hot flashes and mood swings; they're setting sail on a cruise, ready for adventure, and ready to tackle 'The Change' together. The brilliance of Menopause The Musical 2 lies in its ability to turn the often-dreaded transition of Menopause into an opportunity for self-discovery, growth, and friendship. At its heart, this production is a celebration of the enduring power of friendship. As our characters sail through the choppy waters of Menopause, they lean on each other for support, understanding, and, of course, laughter. Their bond is a testament to the idea that true friendship can weather any storm, even the hormonal rollercoaster that is Menopause. Throughout the show, the humor is relentless. The witty dialogue and clever parodies of popular songs will have you laughing until your sides hurt. Menopause may be a challenging phase of life, but it's one that can be made more manageable with the healing power of laughter. As the ladies navigate memory lapses and the occasional mood swing, their infectious humor will keep you in stitches. One of the highlights of Menopause The Musical 2 is the soundtrack. Parodied hits from the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s take center stage, with lyrics that cleverly relate to the Menopausal Experience. From "Stayin' Alive" to "My Guy" and "I Will Survive," these iconic songs are given a hilarious twist that perfectly captures the essence of 'The Change.' Prepare to tap your feet and sing along as you revel in the nostalgia of these timeless tunes. A Message Of Empowerment While Menopause The Musical 2 is undoubtedly a comedy, it also carries a meaningful message of empowerment. It reminds us that Menopause is not the end of the road but rather a new chapter in a woman's life. It's a time for self-discovery, for embracing the changes in our bodies, and for finding joy in the journey. These four women, with their quirks and idiosyncrasies, are a testament to the resilience and strength of women during this stage of life. • City Of Hollywood Launches Turtle-Friendly Lighting Recognition Program

City Of Hollywood Launches Turtle-Friendly Lighting Recognition Program March 2, 2023 Share This week marks the beginning of the 2023 Sea Turtle Nesting Season, which takes place every year from March 1st through October 31st. During this time, the City Of Hollywood’s “Turtle Friendly Lighting Ordinance” is in effect, when the City’s Hatchlings are attracted to light. On undeveloped beaches, the ocean horizon is lighter than the land so new hatchlings head toward the water. In an urban beach environment, artificial light from buildings can disorient hatchlings and attract them away from the ocean. Turtle friendly lighting can minimize disorientation and make Hollywood Beach more hospitable to these endangered species. The Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program (BCSTCP) documented 3,650 nests on the County's 24-mile coastline (including the Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park) in 2022. That’s a record for our area, and Hollywood’s sandy beach plays an important role in that success. Our beach is the desired nesting habitat for three species of endangered sea turtles: leatherbacks, loggerheads and greens. It is vital that everyone does their part to ensure future successful nesting seasons on Hollywood Beach. Sea Turtle Friendly Lighting Lighting near the beach should be "sea turtle-friendly" and follow these three criteria established by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC): Keep it low: Fixtures should be mounted as low as possible to achieve their purpose and their bulbs should produce the lowest lumens (light output) necessary for the task. In addition to low lumens, keep the fixture shielded, the bulb, lamp or glowing lens should be shielded from the beach and the interior lights should not be visible from the beach. If you live near the beach, close your curtains, shades and blinds after sunset. One item you may not be aware of is, wavelength, no we aren't talking about the length of the ocean waves here. They are talking about the output, the fixtures/bulbs must produce long wavelength light (560 nm or longer) without filters, gels or lenses. Amber and red LEDs are good examples of these types of light. Also keep in mind that even lights from cell phones can also disturb nesting and hatching sea turtles. If you visit the beach at night during nesting season, keep your cell phone safely stowed in your pocket or bag. Turtle Friendly Lighting Recognition Pilot Program The City Of Hollywood has launched a Turtle Friendly Lighting Recognition Pilot Program. The goal of the program is to increase awareness and compliance with the City’s turtle friendly lighting ordinance by way of recognition of those property owners who are certified compliant. Hollywood’s turtle friendly lighting ordinance (§108, O-2011-07) requires that exterior lights be mounted as low in elevation as possible, shielded so that the light source is not visible from the beach, directed down and away from the beach and have a low wattage amber or red bulb. To reduce or eliminate the visibility of interior light from the beach, tinted glass or film must be installed on north, east and south facing doors and windows on new developments. Existing buildings can install window and door tint, move light fixtures away from windows, close the blinds and curtains, and turn off all unnecessary lights. To receive recognition, a property must fully comply with the City’s turtle friendly lighting ordinance (§108, O-2011-07). The certification process can be found at: www.HollywoodFL.org/TurtleLighting Apply today to be recognized by clicking the online application at: www.HollywoodFL.org/TurtleLighting < Previous News Next News >

  • Overthrowing the Constitution: All Sides Are Waging War on Our Freedoms

Overthrowing the Constitution: All Sides Are Waging War on Our Freedoms By John & Nisha Whitehead September 12, 2024 Share It is both apt and ironic that the anniversary of 9/11, which paved the way for the government to overthrow the Constitution, occurs the week before the anniversary of the day the U.S. Constitution was adopted on September 17, 1787. All sides are still waging war on our constitutional freedoms, and “we the people” remain the biggest losers. This year’s presidential election is no exception. As Bruce Fein, the former associate deputy attorney general under President Ronald Reagan, warns in a recent article in the Baltimore Sun, “In November, the American people will have a choice between Harris-Walz and Trump-Vance. But they will not have a choice between an Empire and a Republic.” In other words, the candidates on this year’s ballot do not represent a substantive choice between freedom and tyranny so much as they constitute a cosmetic choice: the packaging may vary widely, but the contents remain the same. No matter who wins, the bureaucratic minions of the Security/Military Industrial Complex and its Police State/Deep State partners will retain their stranglehold on power. Neither Donald Trump nor Kamala Harris have the greatest of track records when it comes to actually respecting the rights enshrined in the Constitution, despite the rhetoric being trotted out by both sides lately regarding their so-called devotion to the rule of law. Indeed, Trump has repeatedly called for parts of the Constitution to be terminated, while both Harris and Trump seem to view the First Amendment’s assurance of the right to free speech, political expression and protest as dangerous when used to challenge the government’s power. This flies in the face of everything America’s founders fought to safeguard. Those who gave us the Constitution and the Bill of Rights believed that the government exists at the behest of its citizens. It is there to protect, defend and even enhance our freedoms, not violate them. Unfortunately, although the Bill of Rights was adopted as a means of protecting the people against government tyranny, in America today, the government does whatever it wants, freedom be damned. In the 23 years since the USA Patriot Act—a massive 342-page wish list of expanded powers for the FBI and CIA—was rammed through Congress in the wake of the so-called 9/11 terror attacks, it has snowballed into the eradication of every vital safeguard against government overreach, corruption and abuse. The Patriot Act drove a stake through the heart of the Bill of Rights, violating at least six of the ten original amendments—the First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Amendments—and possibly the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments, as well. The Patriot Act also redefined terrorism so broadly that many non-terrorist political activities such as protest marches, demonstrations and civil disobedience are now considered potential terrorist acts, thereby rendering anyone desiring to engage in protected First Amendment expressive activities as suspects of the surveillance state. In fact, since 9/11, we’ve been spied on by surveillance cameras, eavesdropped on by government agents, had our belongings searched, our phones tapped, our mail opened, our email monitored, our opinions questioned, our purchases scrutinized (under the USA Patriot Act, banks are required to analyze your transactions for any patterns that raise suspicion and to see if you are connected to any objectionable people), and our activities watched. We’re also being subjected to invasive patdowns and whole-body scans of our persons and seizures of our electronic devices in the nation’s airports. We can’t even purchase certain cold medicines at the pharmacy anymore without it being reported to the government and our names being placed on a watch list. In this way, “we the people” continue to be terrorized, traumatized, and tricked into a semi-permanent state of compliance by a government that cares nothing for our lives or our liberties. The bogeyman’s names and faces have changed over time (terrorism, the war on drugs, illegal immigration, a viral pandemic, and more to come), but the end result remains the same: in the so-called name of national security, the Constitution has been steadily chipped away at, undermined, eroded, whittled down, and generally discarded with the support of Congress, the White House, and the courts. A recitation of the Bill of Rights—set against a backdrop of government surveillance, militarized police, SWAT team raids, asset forfeiture, eminent domain, overcriminalization, armed surveillance drones, whole body scanners, stop and frisk searches, vaccine mandates, lockdowns, and the like (all sanctioned by Congress, the White House, and the courts)—would understandably sound more like a eulogy to freedoms lost than an affirmation of rights we truly possess. What we are left with today is but a shadow of the robust document adopted more than two centuries ago. Sadly, most of the damage has been inflicted upon the Bill of Rights. If there is any sense to be made from a recitation of freedoms lost, it is simply this: our individual freedoms have been eviscerated so that the government’s powers could be expanded. So what’s the solution? It was no idle happenstance that the Constitution opens with these three powerful words: “We the people.” In other words, it’s our job to make the government play by the rules of the Constitution. From the President on down, anyone taking public office should have a working knowledge of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and should be held accountable for upholding their precepts. One way to ensure this would be to require government leaders to take a course on the Constitution and pass a thorough examination thereof before being allowed to take office. Some critics are advocating that students pass the United States citizenship exam in order to graduate from high school. Others recommend that it must be a prerequisite for attending college. I’d go so far as to argue that students should have to pass the citizenship exam before graduating from grade school. Here’s an idea to get educated and take a stand for freedom: anyone who signs up to become a member of The Rutherford Institute gets a wallet-sized Bill of Rights card and a Know Your Rights card. Use this card to teach your children the freedoms found in the Bill of Rights. A healthy, representative government is hard work. It takes a citizenry that is informed about the issues, educated about how the government operates, and willing to do more than grouse and complain. As I point out in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, “we the people” have the power to make and break the government.
