- Dictatorship in Disguise: Authoritarian Monsters Wreak Havoc on Our Freedoms
Dictatorship in Disguise: Authoritarian Monsters Wreak Havoc on Our Freedoms By John & Nisha Whitehead October 27, 2022 Share In the classic movie 'Escape from New York', John Carpenter’s film presents fascism as the future of America “You see them on the street. You watch them on TV. You might even vote for one this fall. You think they’re people just like you. You’re wrong. Dead wrong.” — They Live We’re living in two worlds. There’s the world we see (or are made to see) and then there’s the one we sense (and occasionally catch a glimpse of), the latter of which is a far cry from the propaganda-driven reality manufactured by the government and its corporate sponsors, including the media. Indeed, what most Americans perceive as life in America—privileged, progressive and free—is a far cry from reality, where economic inequality is growing, real agendas and real power are buried beneath layers of Orwellian doublespeak and corporate obfuscation, and “freedom,” such that it is, is meted out in small, legalistic doses by militarized police and federal agents armed to the teeth. All is not as it seems. Monsters with human faces walk among us. Many of them work for the U.S. Government. This is the premise of John Carpenter’s film They Live, which was released in November 1988 and remains unnervingly, chillingly appropriate for our modern age. Best known for his horror film Halloween, which assumes that there is a form of evil so dark that it can’t be killed, Carpenter’s larger body of work is infused with a strong anti-authoritarian, anti-establishment, laconic bent that speaks to the filmmaker’s concerns about the unraveling of our society, particularly our government. Time and again, Carpenter portrays the government working against its own citizens, a populace out of touch with reality, technology run amok, and a future more horrific than any horror film. In Escape from New York, Carpenter presents fascism as the future of America. In The Thing, a remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic of the same name, Carpenter presupposes that increasingly we are all becoming dehumanized. In Christine, the film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel about a demon-possessed car, technology exhibits a will and consciousness of its own and goes on a murderous rampage. In In the Mouth of Madness, Carpenter notes that evil grows when people lose “the ability to know the difference between reality and fantasy.” And then there is Carpenter’s They Live, in which two migrant workers discover that the world is not as it seems. In fact, the population is actually being controlled and exploited by aliens working in partnership with an oligarchic elite. All the while, the populace—blissfully unaware of the real agenda at work in their lives—has been lulled into complacency, indoctrinated into compliance, bombarded with media distractions, and hypnotized by subliminal messages beamed out of television and various electronic devices, billboards and the like. It is only when homeless drifter John Nada (played to the hilt by the late Roddy Piper) discovers a pair of doctored sunglasses—Hoffman lenses—that Nada sees what lies beneath the elite’s fabricated reality: control and bondage. When viewed through the lens of truth, the elite, who appear human until stripped of their disguises, are shown to be monsters who have enslaved the citizenry in order to prey on them. Likewise, billboards blare out hidden, authoritative messages: a bikini-clad woman in one ad is actually ordering viewers to “MARRY AND REPRODUCE.” Magazine racks scream “CONSUME” and “OBEY.” A wad of dollar bills in a vendor’s hand proclaims, “THIS IS YOUR GOD.” When viewed through Nada’s Hoffman lenses, some of the other hidden messages being drummed into the people’s subconscious include: NO INDEPENDENT THOUGHT, CONFORM, SUBMIT, STAY ASLEEP, BUY, WATCH TV, NO IMAGINATION, and DO NOT QUESTION AUTHORITY. This indoctrination campaign engineered by the elite in They Live is painfully familiar to anyone who has studied the decline of American culture. A citizenry that does not think for themselves, obeys without question, is submissive, does not challenge authority, does not think outside the box, and is content to sit back and be entertained is a citizenry that can be easily controlled. In this way, the subtle message of They Live provides an apt analogy of our own distorted vision of life in the American police state, what philosopher Slavoj Žižek refers to as dictatorship in democracy, “the invisible order which sustains your apparent freedom.” We’re being fed a series of carefully contrived fictions that bear no resemblance to reality. Tune out the government’s attempts to distract, divert and befuddle us and tune into what’s really going on in this country, and you’ll run headlong into an unmistakable, unpalatable truth: what we are dealing with today is an authoritarian beast that has outgrown its chains and will not be restrained. Through its acts of power grabs, brutality, meanness, inhumanity, immorality, greed, corruption, debauchery and tyranny, the government has become almost indistinguishable from the evil it claims to be fighting, whether that evil takes the form of terrorism, torture, disease, drug trafficking, sex trafficking, murder, violence, theft, pornography, scientific experimentations or some other diabolical means of inflicting pain, suffering and servitude on humanity. We have let the government’s evil-doing and abuses go on for too long. We’re being fed a series of carefully contrived fictions that bear no resemblance to reality. Despite the fact that we are 17,600 times more likely to die from heart disease than from a terrorist attack; 11,000 times more likely to die from an airplane accident than from a terrorist plot involving an airplane; 1,048 times more likely to die from a car accident than a terrorist attack, and 8 times more likely to be killed by a police officer than by a terrorist , we have handed over control of our lives to government officials who treat us as a means to an end—the source of money and power. As the Bearded Man in They Live warns, “They are dismantling the sleeping middle class. More and more people are becoming poor. We are their cattle. We are being bred for slavery.” We have bought into the illusion and refused to grasp the truth. From the moment we are born until we die, we are indoctrinated into believing that those who rule us do it for our own good. The truth is far different. The powers-that-be want us to feel threatened by forces beyond our control (terrorists, pandemics, mass shootings, etc.). They want us afraid and dependent on the government and its militarized armies for our safety and well-being. They want us distrustful of each other, divided by our prejudices, and at each other’s throats. Most of all, they want us to continue to march in lockstep with their dictates as fearful, controlled, pacified zombies. This brings me back to They Live, in which the real zombies are not the aliens calling the shots but the populace who are content to remain controlled. When all is said and done, the world of They Live is not so different from our own. As one of the characters points out, “The poor and the underclass are growing. Racial justice and human rights are nonexistent. They have created a repressive society and we are their unwitting accomplices. Their intention to rule rests with the annihilation of consciousness. We have been lulled into a trance. They have made us indifferent to ourselves, to others. We are focused only on our own gain.” We, too, are focused only on our own pleasures, prejudices and gains. Our poor and underclasses are also growing. Injustice is growing. Inequality is growing. A concern for human rights is nearly nonexistent. We too have been lulled into a trance, indifferent to others. Oblivious to what lies ahead, we’ve been manipulated into believing that if we continue to consume, obey, and have faith, things will work out. But that’s never been true of emerging regimes. And by the time we feel the hammer coming down upon us, it will be too late. So where does that leave us? The characters who populate Carpenter’s films provide some insight. Underneath their machismo, they still believe in the ideals of liberty and equal opportunity. Their beliefs place them in constant opposition with the law and the establishment, but they are nonetheless freedom fighters. When, for example, John Nada destroys the alien hypno-transmitter in They Live, he delivers a wake-up call for freedom. As Nada memorably declares, “I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I’m all out of bubblegum.” In other words: we need to get active and take a stand for what’s really important. Stop allowing yourselves to be easily distracted by pointless political spectacles and pay attention to what’s really going on in the country. As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, the real battle for control of this nation is taking place on roadsides, in police cars, on witness stands, over phone lines, in government offices, in corporate offices, in public school hallways and classrooms, in parks and city council meetings, and in towns and cities across this country. All the trappings of the American police state are now in plain sight. Wake up, America. If they live (the tyrants, the oppressors, the invaders, the overlords), it is only because “we the people” sleep. < Previous News Next News >
- A Dermatologist's Ultimate Guide for Whole Body Care
A Dermatologist's Ultimate Guide for Whole Body Care By BPT August 23, 2024 Share You probably worry a lot about caring for your body - especially your skin - harsh temps and changing temperatures can take their toll. But did you know your self-care routine could also use an overhaul to face the challenges of the hot summer months? "Just like you change your clothes depending on the season, your skincare routine needs to change in the summer, too," said Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Jenny Liu. "While many of us are well versed in how to care for our skin in the winter, summertime brings its own concerns." To help you enjoy the sunshine and warmer temps without stressing your skin, here are some of her tips for your best summer body care. Layer on the sunscreen Apply sunscreen to any exposed skin before going out and about, even on cloudy days. Be sure to bring some along with you if you plan to spend your whole day outdoors and be ready to reapply after spending time in the water. What to do about body odor One of the biggest challenges during the heat of summer is coping with increased odor, which can impact not just your armpits, but everywhere on your body. To address this concern, some women take multiple showers a day or use powder or perfumes that only mask the odor, rather than addressing it at its source. "First and foremost, I want to say that body odor is 100% normal and definitely expected with the hotter weather," said Dr. Liu. "If you're looking for a solution to help you stay fresher longer, I highly recommend Secret Whole Body Deodorant, which is made with ingredients you can use for the whole body, including intimate areas, for external use only." Made with skin care ingredients, Secret Whole Body Deodorant is tested by gynecologists and dermatologists, and is free of aluminum, baking soda, dyes, phthalates and parabens. It comes in three unique formulations: • Aluminum Free Whole Body Deodorant Stick is ideal for use under breasts or where thighs rub together. Made with shea butter and coconut oil, the stick glides on smooth and clear. Available in Peach & Vanilla Blossom, Lilac & Waterlily scents and Unscented. • Aluminum Free Whole Body Deodorant Invisible Cream is perfect for use in intimate areas, and it can easily and precisely be applied by hand. Made with skin care ingredients, the water-based cream absorbs quickly, with no pilling. Available in Peach & Vanilla Blossom scent and Unscented. • Aluminum Free Whole Body Deodorant Spray allows for touchless application across your body and is made with 100% natural propellant so you can experience the full array of light, fresh fragrance notes. Available in Peach & Vanilla Blossom and Lilac & Waterlily scents. Secret Whole Body Deodorant provides 72 hours of clinically proven odor protection for your whole body, to help you feel fresher no matter what summer throws your way. Ways to avoid dry skin While dry skin is common during winter, the summer weather can also be a culprit! Whether you're going in and out of air-conditioned buildings and hot outdoor air, spending time in the blazing sun or going for a swim in chlorinated pools and salty sea water, these activities can all strip the skin of its natural oils. "It's really important to rinse your skin well after swimming," said Dr. Liu. "I always recommend that my patients use a gentle cleanser to remove debris - and then immediately apply a moisturizer on damp skin to reduce dryness and irritation." Revamp your bathroom cabinet With the changing seasons, it's also a great time to refresh your bathroom cabinets and drawers to declutter and remove items that are past their expiration date. "Go through your products so you can toss out anything you no longer use, or that's old or expired," said Dr. Liu. Check your products for texture or color changes, for example. Those are signs that it's time to get a new one. With these tips, you can enjoy all of the fun summer activities you love while looking, feeling - and smelling your best, all day long. < Previous News Next News >

- Parking & The Budget: Balancing a City’s Budget, Is Often a Daunting Task
Parking & The Budget: Balancing a City’s Budget, Is Often a Daunting Task By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper June 24, 2021 Share Over the past week, there have been many residents reaching out to the Commission, regarding parking. I know that I have written about this twice, but, I will continue to keep the residents informed. Parking is only one part of a larger issue, addressing the revenues in our city. The parking plan expansion will address implementation, management and yes, revenues. There will be a Zoom Meeting at Town Hall, on July 19th, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. To sign up for the meeting and to review, all of the facts about this program, there is a landing page with all of the information on our web-site at: www.cohb.org . Over the past ten years, there have been many decisions, good and bad, that have helped the City move forward, while maintaining our services. Balancing a City’s budget, is often a daunting task. The City Manger and The Staff need to have clear, concise information and accurate reporting. Leadership is key and with the past year’s turmoil, turnover and lack of technology investments, this has shown, that clear information has been elusive. Even with having information, there needs to be oversight and a vision of where we need to be, as a City. It is a joint effort, where the Commission, is involved, it is also where residents need to get involved and provide input. There is this temptation to look to the past with questions like: How did we get here? Who was in charge? Why did we make that decision? Why did we not make that decision? It is not, that it is not important to understand why we have gotten here, but, it does not also change what we need to do as a City and as a Commission, moving forward. As the old saying goes, “It is water under the bridge.” I would, however, like to say that NO, is a not a solution when it comes to the budget. Political populism often gives way to practical solutions and often, it creates, extremely difficult decisions. We need to get three votes, to pass a budget and it is required, by law. During the last budget Meeting, we had a turnover, in our City Manager's position. Dr. Jeremy Earle was hired from within our organization, before working for Hallandale Beach, Dr. Jeremy Earle, worked as an Assistant City Manager, in Fort Lauderdale, before that, he was The Dania CRA's Executive Director. I had a chance to work with Dr. Jeremy Earle, in his capacity, as a Board Member of The Florida Redevelopment Board of Directors and then, as President. We do not have control over hiring positions under the City Manager, but when his name came up, I was happy to share my observations. I have personally been watching Dr. Jeremy Earle’s career, over the last year and really pushed to get him hired. Dania’s CRA, was established without a tax increment and funding a partnership, with Broward County, which means that there is no money, except, for the City’s funding. Dr. Jeremy Earle’s prowess, creativity, financial knowledge and leadership have been proven, in the progress, that we all have seen with the growth of Dania. During his terms as President of the FRA, he took their budget and turned it around with his stability and leadership, skills. He was hired in Fort Lauderdale, by City Manager Feldman, who, is considered one of the Deans of Fort Lauderdale's City Managers. If anyone can correct the course of our City’s finances, it definitely, is Dr. Jeremy Earle. Over the years, our City and many other cities have had to deal with, the artificial restraints of Save Our Homes, the State’s meddling, our ability to raise taxes and fee’s, the state's unfunded mandates and the voter's referendums to reduce taxes. They all sound great, but, we have had grave consequences with our ability to provide services to our residents demand's and what the law requires. City’s can levy up to 10 mills on a property, Cities, like ours, have special districts, that can only tax up to 8 mills, currently, we are at 7 mills and we are faced with a cap. The alternatives are to raise fees, leverage our City's assets in the public realm, this generates revenues or, it can cut services. Over the years, we have used our reserves or sold some of the City's assets, to balance our budget. Reserves are needed in the case of natural disasters and should be used, in certain instances. Years ago, we held reserves that almost equaled, our amount for the general fund. There was huge public and statewide push, to reduce and reverse it to realist levels. Government agencies typically, have debated on where, the sweet spot for reserves with a range of 10 to 15%. Currently, we, will be out of reserves by 2024, if all of the things, remain the same. So, this is the year, to evaluate, all of the avenues to increase revenues. We also need to come together and look at all of the contracts and the services, to evaluate realistic levels of service, within our City's Budgets. The City Manager's Budget was released this Monday and over the next month, as a commission, we will be reviewing the budget, this will give us, the chance to review provided changes and uses of the votes for the Budget. I encourage all of our residents, to get involved with the process and provide us with your input. Your help with this process will determine the future for all hallandale beach residents. As always, feel free to contact me anytime with your questions, concerns and ideas on how to make our City, a great place to live, work and play! - Riding For Resilience: Soldier Ride - A Journey Of Healing And Strength
Riding For Resilience: Soldier Ride - A Journey Of Healing And Strength January 26, 2024 Share The sun hung low in the sky, casting a golden hue over the streets of Aventura as a group of warriors gathered, ready to embark on a remarkable journey. Their mission was not one of camaraderie, strength, and healing. These were the courageous participants of the Wounded Warrior Project's Soldier Ride, a multi-day cycling event designed to empower and uplift those who've served their nation. The roots of the Wounded Warrior Project trace back to 2003, emerging as a beacon of hope for Service Members returning from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. From humble beginnings of providing bedside comfort items, WWP evolved to address the diverse needs of Veterans. Among its transformative programs stands the Soldier Ride, an embodiment of resilience and unity. Soldier Ride is more than just a cycling event; it's a transformative experience fostering confidence, camaraderie, and physical prowess. Regardless of ability, warriors pedal together, fostering the same unity they once shared in their Military Service. Initially focused on road cycling, the event has since expanded to encompass various ride options, ensuring inclusivity for all warriors. Whether it's road Biking, Mountain Biking, Skiing, Snowboarding, Virtual Events, or Skill Development Camps, Soldier Ride offers a platform for warriors to challenge themselves and discover new strengths. The heartwarming support for these courageous riders was palpable during a recent sendoff by the City of Aventura Police and guests. Their journey took them through the picturesque landscapes of the Florida Keys, a scenic route that painted a backdrop of natural beauty and resilience. As they traversed U.S. - 1 and conquered the iconic Seven Mile Bridge, their determination resonated with the onlookers, igniting a sense of pride and admiration. Cathy Crane, Monroe County Veterans Affairs Director and Event Coordinator, expressed the significance of the Soldier Ride: "The Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride is an opportunity for those who honorably serve or have served our nation to build confidence and strength from wounds incurred in service. We enthusiastically welcome these warriors as they ride through the Florida Keys and hope our residents and visitors will cheer them on while they ride through our communities." Soldier Ride isn't merely about cycling; it's a conduit for healing, empowerment, and discovering untapped potential. The experience offers warriors a space to find solace and strength through movement, opening doors to new opportunities and knowledge. For those inspired to support this noble cause, the Wounded Warrior Project invites individuals to get involved. Donations, Volunteering, or participating in events all contribute to the ongoing mission of aiding and empowering Veterans. The impact of these gestures extends far beyond the physical act, reaching the hearts of those who have sacrificed for their nation. Soldier Ride serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. It symbolizes the unwavering strength of those who've dedicated their lives to serving their country. As these warriors pedaled forward, they embodied courage, determination, and the unbreakable bond of comradeship. Their journey wasn't just a ride; it was a celebration of resilience and a beacon of hope for all.
