- Florida Telecommunications Relay, Inc: Free Specialized Telecommunications Equipment to Floridians
Florida Telecommunications Relay, Inc: Free Specialized Telecommunications Equipment to Floridians PROFILES By David L. Snelling February 4, 2022 Share People experiencing hearing loss and difficulties communicating over the telephone can turn to a statewide non-profit organization for help. For over 30 years, Florida Telecommunications Relay, Inc. (FTRI) has been providing free specialized telecommunications equipment to Floridians who have a hearing loss, or speech disability. A State law known as the Telecommunications Access Systems Act (TASA) created FTRI and its specialized Equipment Distribution Program, along with the Florida Relay Service, in 1991. TASA was implemented in response to the new federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which charged states with making their telecommunications networks accessible to people with hearing and speech disabilities. The program offers amplification and signaling devices for people who are hard of hearing, late-deafened, deaf, Deaf/blind, or have a speech disability. Elissa Moran, Outreach Manager for FTRI, said the organization works with manufacturers such as Clarity, Serene and ClearSounds to offer amplified telephones and phone amplifiers that are available through 19 FTRI regional distribution centers in the state of Florida. A map of RDC locations and the simple online equipment application form can be found on the FTRI website, www.ftri.org Moran said that according to TASA, people need meet only three requirements to qualify for the program. They must be a permanent Florida resident, be at least three years old, and be certified as having a hearing loss or speech impairment. She said state law didn't set any requirements for income and insurance to qualify for the program. The equipment is loaned to clients to keep for as long as it is needed and may be exchanged for different models as hearing loss changes over time. Customer Care technical support is available by phone, email, or in-person, also at no cost to the client. Moran stated the distribution program offers an array of amplified telephones that meet the needs of people experiencing hearing loss and speech problems. For example, she said the Clarity XLC8 cordless amplified telephone allows people to make calls with and without a landline connection. It can be paired with up to two Bluetooth-equipped cellphones, allowing a user to place hearing aid-compatible amplified calls using their cell phone service. In addition to a great speakerphone and distortion-free amplification, the XLC8 allows people to slow down live conversations, and the playback of messages on the built-in answering machine. "The nice thing about this device is you can slow down live conversations, and play the messages back slowly," Moran said. "It's huge for seniors because if someone is talking so fast that they probably can't keep up. This is a great feature." Moran said like its predecessor the XLC7BT cordless amplified telephone, the XLC8 offers up to 50 decibels of amplification along with tone control, a volume boost button, and ergonomic volume control wheel for a customized listening experience. Moran highlighted another cool feature of the Clarity XLC phones- their DECT technology, and the available companion Clarity XLCgo. When used together, the XLCgo acts like an expanded handset, meaning it can be set up in a different room from the ‘base’ XLC8 or 7 it is paired with. It is like getting two phones, in one! Even better, the XLCgo will, just as the name implies, amplify cell phone calls when on the go. "When someone needs to leave the house and they have a cell phone amplifier to use outside the home environment, they are not closed off from communication," she said. "They are safer, better-equipped to communicate effectively during an emergency. Additionally, the equipment is easy to use and friendly to fingers that are not as nimble as they used to be. It's designed especially for older people." Like the Clarity products, the Serene SA-40 Amplifier offers 40 decibels of amplification and multiple tone settings. It connects easily to Bluetooth-equipped smart phones and features a powerful speakerphone. Moran said people may visit the FTRI Regional Distribution Centers to explore phone equipment options, where they will receive personalized service from FTRI-trained staff. That specialist will assess the applicant’s ability to hear and understand speech over the phone, and match them with the right device to help improve their telephone communications experience. "Somebody who's interested in the phones and wants to learn more about them, would schedule an appointment at one of our RDC's. There they will be greeted by someone who has received the appropriate training by FTRI staff in Tallahassee, Moran said. "They make sure that person has the right device, and the right training, and the client goes home that day with free equipment, with no hidden fees or costs." Moran explained that FTRI doesn't provide phone services, just the phones and amplifiers. "They must have their own phone lines," Moran said. Our equipment makes those phone lines accessible to them.” The non-profit organization doesn't take any payments for the phones distributed to citizens who need them, or engage in any fund-raisers. That’s because according to TASA, FTRI services are funded by a small surcharge assessed on each landline in the State of Florida. The current assessment is only 10 cents per month. Moran emphasized that the FTRI program offers high-quality phones that are far superior to any devices sold in retail outlets. It is because they are so specialized, and expensive, that they are pretty much available only online, or through state programs such as FTRI. "You won't find them in your local Target or Best Buy," she said. "They are not available for purchase at any local stores." Although the Florida Relay Service plays an important role in making telecommunications accessible by allowing standard phones (like those at the pizza place) to connect to non-standard phones (think the old TTY, and increasingly, Captioned telephones), Moran says the equipment distribution program gets the most attention of the FTRI programs because the otherwise expensive phones and equipment are free. She said FTRI outreach and awareness programs strive to reach as many people as possible to tell them about the free phone equipment distribution program. However, with limited advertising budgets, that can be a challenge. "People are not seeing this stuff to help improve their lives," she said. "The program can really help them if they know it exists." < Previous News Next News >

- Keller's Korner: Jews In Hockey | sun-times
Keller's Korner: Jews In Hockey By Neil Keller May 2, 2025 Welcome To Keller’s Korner. For Over 100 Years, Jewish People Have Been Involved With The National Hockey League (NHL). In 1923, The Nhl Handed Out The Hart Memorial Trophy For The Most Valuable Player For Each Season And The Tradition Continues To Today. Cecil Hart Was The Coach And Gm For The Montreal Canadiens And His Father, David, Donated The Original Trophy. David and Cecil go back to the very first Jewish family with Aaron Hart that settled in Canada. It was in 1924 when Samuel Rothschild became the very first Jewish NHL skater. Ironically, Samuel’s family were the very first Jewish settlers in Sudbury, Ontario. Over the years, Jewish people have played an important role in the NHL. Gary Bettman has been the NHL Commissioner since 1993. There have been Jewish NHL skaters over the years, but in the last two years the number of participants is at an all-time highest in numbers. Among the top players is Adam Fox of the New York Rangers. Adam has been named to the All-Star team twice and won the Norris Trophy for best defenseman in the NHL. Zach Hyman of the Edmonton Oilers is an offensive machine. I expect Zach to pass Matt Schneider for the most goals by a Jewish player. Zach wears jersey #18 for “Chai.” What would the NHL be without the three Hughes brothers? Ellen Weinberg-Hughes is the proud mother of Jack, Luke and Quinn who are all playing in the NHL. Ellen is part of the very first American family to have all siblings to be drafted in the first round. Jack Hughes is a star for the New Jersey Devils. At just 23 years old, he has already been named three times to the NHL All-Star team. He is younger than Zach Hyman and could easily become the all-time scoring leader for Jewish skaters. Luke Hughes also plays for the New Jersey Devils. Just 21 years old, Luke was named to the All-Rookie team. The oldest sibling is Quinn at the age of 24 years old. He plays for the Vancouver Canucks. Just like his brother Jack, he is a scoring machine. He is the captain of the Canucks, was voted to the All-Star team last and won the Norris trophy. Until recently, few fans knew that Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman was Jewish. That might be because he is from Anchorage, Alaska but his father is Jewish and Jeremy had a Bar Mitzvah. Other top players include Jakob Chychrun of the Washington Capitals. Jakob grew up in Boca Raton and has a Jewish mother. Other current players include Andre Burakovsky of the Seattle Kraken, Mark Friedman of the Vancouver Canucks, Jordan Harris of the Columbus Blue Jackets (he is Jewish and African American), Luke Kunin of the San Jose Sharks (by the way, the Sharks have a Jewish Head Coach named Ryan Warsofsky), Jason Zucker of the Buffalo Sabres, and Jake Walman of the San Jose Sharks. We might see Cole Guttman get promoted back to the Chicago Blackhawks and Devon Levi return to the Buffalo Sabres. I predict that Zeev Buium, who is just 19 years old and his brother Shai, 21, will be playing in the NHL very soon. More coming to the ice. Neil Keller is a Jewish historian. Led by the Award-Winning Sebrina María Alfonso, SFSO will present five new powerful Masterworks concerts and the holiday fan-favorite, Handel’s glorious Messiah. The concerts will take place in Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Key West. Experience Candide's riotous journey as he embarks on a whirlwind adventure pursuing "the best of all possible worlds." Teeming with humor, unexpected twists, and profound philosophical reflections, Bernstein's iconic music, adapted from Voltaire's famed Enlightenment-era novella, sets the backdrop for an unforgettable evening filled with laughter and existential musings. A Pawfect Addition To the Family: Find A Furry Friend At The Aventura Mall Between Nike And Tesla June 20, 2024 Share The Humane Society of Greater Miami has been helping homeless animals in Miami-Dade County since 1936. Today, more than 400 homeless dogs, cats, puppies and kittens each day are cared for at the Soffer and Fine Adoption Center in North Miami Beach. They are able to give these animals a second chance by providing tender loving care, a good meal, shelter and medical care for as long as it takes to find them homes with kind, responsible and committed caregivers. The organization works diligently at creating a more kind, just and loving community for the pets and people of Miami-Dade County. They offer programs and services to educate, inform and inspire people to take responsible care of their pets and treat animals with the kindness they deserve. With the support of people from across Miami-Dade County, they are helping to create a better community for all. The staff at the Humane Society of Greater Miami run a preventive veterinary clinic, where they strive to end our community’s pet overpopulation problem by performing thousands of sterilization surgeries each year. They have programs that help the financially challenged people of our community by providing low-cost and even free services for Vaccinations and Spay/Neuter surgeries. Each animal that is cared for at their shelter is free from the threat of Euthanasia while they wait for their forever family. More than 3,300 animals each year find their human companions and begin their new lives in the comfort of homes around our community and South Florida. Before a pet is available for adoption, great lengths are made to make sure the pet is healthy, Vaccinated and Spayed or Neutered. They provide counseling and guidance to make sure the right match is made and the right pet is adopted into the right home. The Humane Society of Greater Miami believes that the building of a more kind, just, and loving community for the pets and people of Miami-Dade County begins with instilling the values of kindness and compassion. Staff and volunteers of the Humane Society of Greater Miami travel to schools, libraries, organizations and clubs to teach the young and the old about responsible pet ownership and to promote the human/animal bond. The center's philosophy is to engage the young and teach them about being kind to animals, being a responsible pet owner and the causes and effects of pet overpopulation while also educating the parents and the elderly making it a full circle of informed members of our community. More than 6,000 children and adults are seen on a yearly basis. Fishing For Wishes - RCASF Event Raises $220,000 To Help Make-A-Wish Improve The Lives Of Sick Kids And Families Aventura Digest Aug 27, 2026 Four-Year-Old Beau Tripp May Be Too Young To Understand The Community That Has Mobilized Around Him As He Battles Health Issues, But The Roofing Contractors Association Of South Florida (RCASF) Has Demonstrated They Are Squarely By His Side. The NonProfit Organization recently hosted Tripp and his family at their 47th Annual Fishing Tournament in Islamorada, an event that raised $220,000 to help Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida grant life-changing wishes for critically-ill children. The Pembroke Pines resident, who recently underwent a kidney transplant, had his wish to visit Florida theme parks underwritten by CL Burks Construction, one of the many companies within the association committed to making a child’s dream come true by sponsoring their wish. To date, more than $2.3 Million has been raised by local roofing contractors through the partnership with Make-A-Wish Southern Florida. “The impact we’ve been able to have within our community from this event is a testament to the association and their sincere desire to improve the lives of children in South Florida,” said Corey Daley, Chairman of the RCASF fishing tournament. “Meeting the Tripp family, and hearing all they’ve gone through with Beau’s health, really reinforced how important the wish experience is and the role our fundraising plays in making it happen.” Much of the money RCASF raised during its three-day event at Cheeca Lodge was from signature sponsors that pledged to underwrite the cost of a wish. These donations from individual companies within the association began more than a decade ago when Earl and Lynne Johnston (Earl W. Johnston Roofing) made the first commitment. The number of those willing to help has grown each year, a fitting legacy for Earl Johnston, who passed away after the 2025 tournament. “It’s our mission to identify and grant a life-changing wish for every critically-ill child in our territory,” said Norman Wedderburn, President & CEO of Make-A-Wish Southern Florida, which includes 22 Florida counties and the U.S. Virgin Islands. “The ongoing generosity of the Roofing Contractors Association of South Florida helps us make a difference for Beau and so many other deserving children.” In addition to Make-A-Wish, proceeds from the RCASF’s largest annual fundraiser also benefitted the International Game Fishing Association. About Make-A-Wish Southern Florida Make-A-Wish Southern Florida ( www.wish.org/sfla ) has granted more than 15,000 life-changing wishes since 1983 for children who have critical illnesses. It aims to grant a wish for every medically-eligible child in its territory and understands wishes aren’t just nice, they’re necessary for kids and families at some of the most difficult times in their lives. Wish kids most often ‘wish to be’ (something), ‘wish to meet’ (someone), ‘wish to go’ (somewhere), ‘wish to have’ (something), or ‘wish to give’ (to a cause) and the NonProfit Organization makes this happen for the child and his/her entire family at no cost or obligation. Follow and engage with them on Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, and TikTok. The Roofing Contractors Association of South Florida ( www.rcasf.org ) is a Not-For-Profit Trade Association whose purpose is to educate and foster a high standard of business ethics among roofing contractors and associate members. RCASF members endeavor to ‘give back’ to their community throughout the year by hosting several charitable events. - ZAKA Search & Rescue Provides Kavod HaMeit During Busiest 24 Hours Of 5786, Responding From Tragedy To Tragedy | sun-times
ZAKA Search & Rescue Provides Kavod HaMeit During Busiest 24 Hours Of 5786, Responding From Tragedy To Tragedy Jewish Connection News Aug 27, 2026 ZAKA Search & Rescue Volunteers Worked Virtually Nonstop Through A Succession Of Tragedies Across Israel And Internationally Over A Single 24-Hour Period Sunday, Marking What Officials Describe As The Organization’s Busiest 24-Hour Period Of 5786. At the start of one of the final weeks of the summer, ZAKA Search & Rescue teams were dispatched from one tragedy to the next, responding to multiple fatal incidents involving children, teenagers and adults across Israel while the organization’s International Unit simultaneously assisted a Jewish family following the death of a four-year-old Jerusalem boy in a drowning accident in Mexico. The boy drowned in a hotel swimming pool in San Jose del Cabo while vacationing with his family. ZAKA Search & Rescue worked with Mexican authorities and other relevant agencies to assist the family and successfully prevent an autopsy. The child’s body was released and the organization is now helping coordinate his return to Israel for burial. Back in Israel, volunteers responded in rapid succession to a series of tragedies, including the death of a five-year-old child in Lod, the drowning of a 12-year-old boy in the Jordan River and the death of a 16-year-old boy in a rappelling accident in northern Israel. ZAKA Search & Rescue teams also responded to multiple fatal traffic accidents and several cases involving people who were found deceased in their homes, including individuals who had died several days earlier. The string of incidents required volunteers and commanders across the country to move continuously from one scene to the next while the organization simultaneously coordinated an international response in Mexico. “Over the course of this extraordinary 24-hour period, our volunteers were working back to back, responding to one tragedy after another across Israel while our International Unit was simultaneously assisting a Jewish family thousands of miles away in Mexico,” said ZAKA North Executive Director Moshe Rozenberg. “There was virtually no pause between calls. Behind every incident is a family experiencing unimaginable loss, and our volunteers remain committed to being there, no matter how many calls come in or where they occur.” The intense period also demonstrated the breadth of ZAKA Search & Rescue’s operations, with teams responding across Israel while the organization’s international network coordinated with authorities and community partners overseas. “This was an extraordinary 24 hours for ZAKA Search & Rescue and for the thousands of volunteers who stand ready to respond whenever tragedy strikes,” said ZAKA Search & Rescue CEO Dubi Weissenstern. “Our volunteers continued working through one difficult scene after another, providing support to families and ensuring Kavod HaMeit. At the same time, our international teams were doing the same for a Jewish family in Mexico. Whether a tragedy occurs in Israel or thousands of miles away, our responsibility does not change. We are there to serve, to support and to ensure that no family faces these moments alone.” The 24-hour period comes as families across Israel enter the final weeks of the summer, a time when travel, vacations and outdoor activities increase and ZAKA Search & Rescue remains prepared to respond around the clock. Founded to honor the dead in accordance with religious tradition, ZAKA has evolved into a full-scale emergency response network, with over 4,000 trained volunteers operating 24/7 across Israel to honor the dead, aid the living and bring dignity in times of devastation. Today, it operates a wide range of units – from rapid medical response and search and rescue to water recovery to culturally sensitive burial teams serving Israel’s Jewish, Bedouin, Arab and Druze communities to international units deploying at a moment’s notice to crises across the globe.
