Thanksgiving - Have An Attitude Of Gratitude By Bryan Golden Nov 19, 2025 Thanksgiving Is Much More Than A Big Meal With Family And Friends. It's A Time To Reflect On And Be Thankful For All Of The Good Things You Have. It's Important To Be Grateful, Not Just On Thanksgiving, But Each And Every Day. Rather Than Lamenting What You Feel Is Lacking In Your Life, Begin Each New Day By Developing An Attitude Of Gratitude. Take Inventory Of Your Blessings And You Will Be Surprised At Just How Much You Have To Be Thankful For. If you have enough to eat, a place to live, a way to get around, people who care about you, or people you care about, then you are wealthy. If you lack any of these elements, you must still be grateful for what you do have, while striving to obtain whatever is absent. Focus on all positive aspects of your life. Take nothing for granted. Every morning, recharge your appreciation. Be happy for everything there is, not upset over what you feel is missing. Dreams of the future shouldn’t diminish appreciation for the present. If all you do is concentrate on what you want, you won't enjoy today. Don't be jealous of others; what they do or have has no bearing on you. You can feel bitter or resentful for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you feel something is missing from your life, things aren't going your way, or you have been treated unfairly. You may wonder, "why do these things always happen to me?" Life's problems tend to dominate your thoughts, turning your focus to what you feel is wrong. You may start to resent those who appear to be better off. You’re apt to dwell on things you think would make your life better if you had them. If only you had more money, more time, a bigger house, a different car, a different job, a different boss, had picked a different career, etc. Once your attitude becomes one of deficiency instead of abundance and appreciation, you can become overwhelmed by feelings of frustration and feel like a victim. As this happens, a consuming vicious cycle starts. Being bitter or resentful blows situations out of proportion. People who are bitter frequently find that their situations deteriorate and their mental and physical health decays. It’s difficult, if not impossible, to achieve your goals while you are bitter or resentful. Regardless of what challenges might befall you, bitterness makes finding solutions much more elusive. There is no point to feeling bitter since it accomplishes nothing, harms you and makes things worse. Filling yourself with gratitude on a daily basis makes you feel good, while driving out negative feelings. Begin your practice of gratitude each morning as soon as you wake. Every day is a great day. If you have any doubts, try missing one. Take inventory of everything, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, that is good in your life. If it helps, make a written list of all things you are grateful for. Read your list every day. As you do this, you will build and reinforce your attitude of gratitude. Don't waste any time with what you feel you don't have. Keep things in perspective. Consider all the people who have overcome difficulties far worse than yours. Don't be consumed by your problems, there is always a solution. Maintaining an attitude of gratitude allows your mind to devise a resolution for your circumstances. Make everyday a day of Thanksgiving and you will be amazed how much better your life will become. Bryan is the author of "Dare to Live Without Limits." Contact Bryan at: Bryan@columnist.com . - How To Enjoy Fresh Maine Lobster This Season
How To Enjoy Fresh Maine Lobster This Season By Family Features July 20, 2023 Share As people look to change what's on their plates, it can be tough to know where to begin. From Social Media-inspired Recipes to trendy menu offerings, there are many options. That's why restaurant owners Katie and Thom Werner are recommending a staple that's sustainable, fresh and versatile: Lobster. The Werners own the popular Island Lobster Co. Restaurant in Peaks Island, Maine where Thom works as a commercial fisherman and supplies most of the Lobster served. The Werner family is well versed in the iconic Maine Lobster fishery, coming from a long line of generational fishing families, with Thom having fished since he was 6 years old. They know Lobster can be intimidating for home cooks, but as people familiar with the product, they emphasize Lobster is easy to prepare, delicious and supports communities up and down the coast. "Lobsters are always sustainably harvested and handled with care by the fishery," Katie said. "It's so important to know where your food comes from and with local Lobster, it's something you can feel great about enjoying that also directly benefits so many families like ours." Lobsters are harvested year-round in Maine and New Hampshire; however, the majority are caught between late June and late December, when the Lobsters are the most active. For those looking to enjoy a simple and classic version of Lobster, the Werners recommend a tried and true method. "Steamed with some melted butter is always perfect," Thom said. "You can't beat the sweet, succulent flavors of Fresh Lobster with that punch of Salty Butter." For those looking for a fresh twist, Katie suggests trying her favorite recipe at Island Lobster Co.: The BLT Lobster Roll. "It's a savory and sweet combination of Crispy Bacon, Juicy Tomatoes and Tender Lobster Meat, all served on a Buttery Roll," she said. "It's a great way to enjoy sustainable trap-to-table fare." No matter what Recipe people go with, the Werner family hopes everyone can partake in enjoying a staple of their heritage. "To me, Maine Lobster is a taste of home," Thom said. "I've always enjoyed it with friends and family. Now I get to share that legacy with my own kids and our community at the restaurant. I feel incredibly lucky and I hope everyone - whether you're a Mainer or on the opposite side of the country - can enjoy it as a celebration of such an iconic industry." BLT Lobster Roll Recipe courtesy of the Werner family of Island Lobster Co. on behalf of the Maine Lobster Marketing Collaborative Yield: 1 Roll • 3 Slices of Bacon • 1/4 Pound of Fresh Lobster Meat or Meat from 1-Pound Lobster • 1 Tablespoon of Butter • 1 Brioche Bun, halved • 1 Tablespoon of Mayonnaise • 3 Tomato Slices • 1 Large Leaf of Romaine Lettuce or Butter Lettuce Preheat the oven to 400 F. Line the baking sheet with parchment paper and arrange the Bacon Slices on top. Cook them for 10-15 minutes, or until desired crispiness. Prepare a large pot with 2 inches of Salted Water and bring it to a rolling boil. Add the Lobster and steam it for 12 minutes. Halfway through, lift the lid carefully and shift the Lobster to cook it evenly. Break down the Lobster and remove the meat from the shell, yielding about 4 Ounces of cooked meat. Chop the meat into bite-size pieces. In a large skillet or griddle over Medium Heat, warm the Butter to coat the pan. Place both pieces of the Bun cut sides down on a pan and cook them for about 30 seconds until they are golden. Remove the Buns from the pan and set them aside. In a bowl, toss the Chopped Lobster Meat with the Mayonnaise and set it aside. Assemble the Cooked Bacon, the Tomato, the Lettuce and the Lobster mix on the toasted Bun. - A Century Of Service - FPL's First Power Plant Has Been Supporting South Florida Communities For Nearly 100 Years | sun-times
A Century Of Service - FPL's First Power Plant Has Been Supporting South Florida Communities For Nearly 100 Years Jul 30, 2025 Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) has operated a power plant in Fort Lauderdale since 1927. Originally known as the “superpower plant” and now called the Dania Beach Clean Energy Center, FPL’s first power plant has remained a symbol of innovation and reliability for nearly a century. Over the decades, the plant has transformed dramatically, growing from its early days of powering around 110,000 homes to now nearly 720,000 — a more than sixfold increase in energy production to help support Florida’s expanding population. By modernizing its power plant fleet, including knocking down old, less efficient power plants and building new, highly efficient combined cycle natural gas plants, FPL has saved customers more than $16 Billion in fuel costs since 2001. Last year alone, the company’s fuel-saving technologies saved customers $867 Million. As South Florida's energy needs have grown, this facility has evolved to meet those demands, ensuring reliable and efficient power for a burgeoning population. Every enhancement to the plant has not only boosted its capacity but also reinforced its vital role in the community. It’s a transformative journey that FPL instrument and control specialist Roy West has been a part of for the past 40 years. In 1992, a newly hired West recalls walking into FPL’s Lauderdale plant, now known as the Dania Beach Clean Energy Center, and seeing the aftermath of what was one of the plant’s historical upgrades to improve efficiency and promote fuel-savings for thousands of South Floridians. “We tore down 24 units that generated 1,200 megawatts (MW), and we built just five to generate the same amount of energy,” West said. “It was the first time in the company’s history that we did something like that, and it really was a game changer, not just for us, but for the industry as well.” At the time, newspapers described it as the “largest gas turbine repowering project of its kind.” This was one of four major upgrades, ensuring FPL provided, and continues to provide, reliable electricity through a diverse energy mix while keeping bills as low as possible. “It’s been a remarkable path, and it continues to be remarkable,” West said. “You can tip your hat to leadership at this company. They saw a vision and set the groundwork to make it happen.” And as the utility celebrates its 100-year anniversary, the plant exemplifies FPL’s legacy and commitment. "The Dania Beach Clean Energy Center is a cornerstone of our history, marking FPL's first plant in our fleet,” said Vice President of Power Generation Division Fossil Operations and Pipeline Tom Broad. “This achievement underscores our broader strategic goals of leading the transition to clean energy, implementing advanced technologies and fostering economic growth.” In 2018, the plant went through its most recent modernization to replace older, outdated machinery with highly efficient systems that produce more energy with less fuel and substantially lower emissions. It was a milestone that Senior Director of Turbine Engineering, Power Generation Division, Fabian Camacho witnessed firsthand, as he was responsible for the support and integration of the construction of the new plant, all the way through until commercial operations began. “Witnessing the evolution of the plant from its original design to the advanced, modern facility it is today has been a remarkable journey,” said Camacho, who’s been with FPL since 2007. “The substantial increase in capacity is a testament to our commitment to efficiency and innovation.” Beyond the technological advancements, another rewarding part of this transformation for Camacho was being able to watch the team grow while systems became more sophisticated. “Since we started construction, the team's growth and development have been incredible,” Camacho said. “One of the most rewarding aspects of this project has been seeing how seamlessly the team transitioned the facility from the construction phase to full operational status.” This growth is reflected not only in the plant but also in its contributions to the local economy and community. “This facility is a testament of our long-term commitment to boost the local economy by creating jobs and promoting sustainable energy solutions for South Florida communities," said FPL Director of External Affairs for the Broward and Southwest regions Juliet Roulhac. Job creation, in addition to local property taxes paid, are some examples of economic benefits that the plant has brought to Dania Beach and surrounding cities. "I'm proud to be the mayor of Broward's first city and also proud to have FPL's first power plant here in our own backyard," said Dania Beach Mayor Joyce Davis. "For nearly 100 years, this plant has powered our schools where our kids learn, it's powered thriving, small businesses and also has contributed to our local economy." Even beyond the plant's day-to-day operations, Davis said there’s been numerous community projects that FPL has supported — a symbol that the utility does more than just keeping the lights on for its customers, she added. A new children's playground and basketball court, community mural and grant funding for local businesses to gain membership through the Dania Beach Chamber of Commerce are just some examples of these projects. “It's great that we've had this plant here, which has undergone multiple upgrades to save our residents and FPL's customers money, but it's more than that," Davis said. "It's about showing up for the community, and FPL has remained committed to that." FPL instrument and control specialist Roy West has been a part of for the past 40 years. Originally known as the “superpower plant” the Dania plant was a symbol of innovation in a Dania Parade years ago. Dania new unit 1958. Since 1927, FPL’s first power plant has been chugging along amid the changing landscape of Broward County.
