- Sleepovers Available!
Sleepovers Available! May 27, 2021 Share The Humane Society of Broward County is Offering Doggie and Kitty Sleepovers Thinking about adding a furry friend to your family, but not quite sure if you are ready? Have another dog at home and want to see if they would enjoy the companionship of a playmate? The Humane Society of Broward County is offering doggie and kitty sleepovers for select pets; sorry, puppies and kittens are not available. According to Cherie Wachter at the adoption center, “sleepovers give potential adopters the opportunity to see how the pet they selected will blend in with their family. It also gives the pets a break from being in the shelter. We started doing sleepovers on a limited basis when the Pandemic started last March and have had great success with it. More than two dozen pets were adopted as a result, including Marvel – a fabulously fun American bulldog mix who is deaf. His new family adores him.” Pets typically available for sleepovers are those that have been passed by for no apparent reason. Once in a home environment, they relax and just want to be part of the family. In order to take home one of the select sleepover pets, a $50 deposit is required and the dog must leave with a collar and a leash. Sleepovers can last for a maximum of two weeks, at which time you will either need to bring the pet back or finalize the adoption and pay any remaining fees. If you have thought about adopting, or think a sleepover might be right for you, stop by the Humane Society of Broward County located at 2070 Griffin Road, the center opens daily at 11:00 a.m. Want to add something sweet to your life? If so, Butterscotch (ID 642672) is waiting to meet you. This two year old, 56 pound gal loves attention and she is good with kids ages 5 and up. Butterscotch knows a few basic commands, especially if a yummy treat is involved and she enjoys going for walks. A proper walking harness would be recommended, since she does get excited and pulls a bit. If you have a dog at home that is looking for a friend, she might be the perfect match. Beautiful Mu Mu (ID 641431) is eager to find a cat loving family to welcome her into their home. This petite, seven pound, tortoiseshell kitty is just a year old and already had a litter of kitties that had to be delivered by an emergency c-section. Her children have all been adopted and now, Mu Mu is patiently waiting for someone to adopt her, could you be her shining star? If you would like to see other furry friends up for adoption today, go to: Dogs: https://humanebroward.com/dogs/ Cats: https://humanebroward.com/cats/ Other Pets: https://humanebroward.com/other/ Preparing to Adopt: If you lease your home, check with your landlord before adopting to be sure you are allowed to have a pet and can afford all required pet deposits. Pets are sometimes returned because of lease restrictions and/or the landlord’s disapproval of the pet chosen. This can be an expensive lesson, since the adoption fees are non-refundable and being returned to the shelter can be a stressful experience for the animal, as well, other members of your household should be aware you want to add a pet and should meet the pet before you decide to adopt. Every member of the family needs to consider, does anyone have allergies, are other members of the household, including children, afraid of animals, are you expecting other members of the household to share in the care of the pet? These are all concerns when caring for a pet in your home. Consider the initial and on-going costs of a new pet. These costs include: adoption fees, food, grooming, obedience training, pet supplies, licensing, additional veterinary care such as diagnostic testing and preventative medication and these costs, can easily be $200-400 or more, within the first few weeks of adoption. The adoption representatives at the Humane Society of Broward County recommend that you do not immediately expose your existing pets to a new pet. Consider how you will manage an isolation period, be sure that all existing pets are up to date on vaccinations and other routine health care before bringing a new pet, home. Facilitating positive pet-to-pet introductions will require some management on your part too. Not all pets are instant friends and may require temporary or intermittent separation to ensure a smooth transition. Some pets are happy to share their home within a week or two, others may take a month or longer, to adjust. The adoption staff will be happy to review the steps to properly introduce your new pet to your resident pets. All dogs and cats making the transition to a new home, will need time to adjust to a new family and may require house training and behavior training to correct problem behaviors. If you aren’t prepared to invest your time to teach your new pet, appropriate behavior and help the animal adjust, you should not consider adopting a pet at this time. Positive rein-forcement-based training is recommended, for all newly adopted dogs and puppies. Before bringing your dog, cat, or critter home, make sure you have all of the supplies required to properly care for the newest member of your household. From toys and leashes to treats and litter pans, the adoption centers have a wide variety of merchandise available for purchase and the knowledgeable staff, can help you find the right products for your pet during the adoption interview process. Please make a lifetime commitment to your pet, remember that the animal you choose has already been abandoned or unwanted at least once in its life. Dogs and cats may live 12 to 15 years or more, your thoughtful consideration, preparation and commitment will help insure a lifelong placement. If you’re ready to add a furry friend to your family, visit the Humane Society of Broward County located at 2070 Griffin Road, a block west of I95. The shelter opens daily at 11:00 a.m. If you have any questions, call: (954) 989-3977 Extension: 6. To see who needs a home, visit: www.humanebroward.com . < Previous News Next News >
- Hallandale Beach Resident Leads The Way: At The 2022 National Senior Games In Fort Lauderdale
Hallandale Beach Resident Leads The Way: At The 2022 National Senior Games In Fort Lauderdale May 19, 2022 Share If you are over 50 years of age and feel like you can’t exercise, Hallandale Beach resident JoAnn Sampson has a few words for you. “Just bend down and try to touch your toes!” She says, “As we get older, we think exercise is not for us. But as seniors, we are generation of champions.” The 81-year-old track and field enthusiast knows the joy of being a champion, and hopes to win even more medals when she competes in the 2022 National Senior Games presented by Humana. The Games, the largest qualified multi-sport medal event in the world for seniors age 50 plus, held at venues throughout Broward County from May 10-23. A former elementary school teacher, Sampson retired after 35 years in the profession, but knew she had to do something to keep from being bored and missing her students. Although she was never an athlete, an article she read in 2002 about the Senior Games provided the motivation to register for her first race and begin training. Twenty years later, she hasn’t slowed down. Becoming an athlete at age 62 became her new calling. Sampson started walking and training seven days a week rain or shine. As she likes to say, “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain.” Being a competitor also revived her passion for teaching, motivating other seniors to participate in sports. She delivers inspiring speeches to churches and schoolchildren in poor neighborhoods. "Stand up for who you are and don't let anyone tell you you're too old or can’t do something. Age has nothing to do with it. You can do whatever is in your heart.” The wealth of gold, silver and bronze medals Sampson has won at state, national and international competitions reflect her shining spirit and determination. She enjoys the 50, 100 and even 200-meter races, but has also excelled in the 400 and 800 meter events and also in the shot put. Her best time in the 100 meters is 14.78 seconds. But her greatest time will be at the National Senior Games, as she was selected to be the female flag bearer for Florida at the ‘Celebration of Athletes’ Olympic-style ceremony. ‘I am so proud to be an athlete and ambassador for Florida, and our Greater Fort Lauderdale community, as we host the 2022 National Senior Games presented by Humana. It is also nice to not have to travel and that this major event is happening right in our backyard.” JoAnn Sampson Nearly 12,000 athletes will be competing in The Games, with sports ranging from archery to volleyball. But to those who know JoAnn Sampson, she is truly one in a million. A Competition For the Ages Competitions are held in five-year age brackets from 50 to 100+ to allow athletes to compete with their peers for medals. The oldest athlete this year is 103-year-old golfer Lindsay Tise from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The oldest Floridian will be Stanley Corwin, a 97-year-old bowler from Boynton Beach in Broward County. “Everyone always asks about the oldest athletes, and they are truly inspiring,” Riker commented. “But we have amazing athletes and examples of healthy, active aging at every age level of The Games. All of our events are free for the public and we hope people of all ages in South Florida will come out to experience the atmosphere of fitness, fun and fellowship that makes us so unique.” The 21 sports offered range from Triathlon to Shuffleboard, and two new sports were added for 2022 – Beach Volleyball and Cornhole. “The response has been tremendous for both, but especially for Beach Volleyball,” Riker noted. “A large number of our indoor players were eager for the chance to also play outdoors on the pristine Fort Lauderdale beach.” For more information on the 2022 National Senior Games presented by Humana, please race over to the National Senior Games Association’s website, www.nsga.com . - Mind Over Milliseconds - Mental Resilience At The Miami Grand Prix | sun-times
Mind Over Milliseconds - Mental Resilience At The Miami Grand Prix By Chandrally Mahajan, Chief Healthcare Correspondent Special Coverage from the 2025 Miami GP May 9, 2025 At the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, precision was everything—and still, it wasn’t always enough. During Day 1 qualifying practice, two drivers clocked identical lap times down to the thousandth of a second, momentarily tying for first place. For a brief, electrifying instant, they were on top—until another two racers delivered laps just milliseconds faster, coming in close together and knocking their competitors down to third and fourth. The ruthless reshuffling continued, etched onto the leaderboard in cold, unforgiving numbers: 1:28.0, then +0.3, +0.5, and so on. No one made a mistake. They were simply... outpaced. Watching it unfold doesn’t feel like failure. It feels rather like emotional whiplash—like putting your entire soul into something, only to watch it be outrun by the tiniest margin imaginable. Mental Endurance at High Speeds When things go wrong, F1 drivers don’t have time to get upset or dwell. They use short phrases or breathing techniques to keep going. Their brains learn to compartmentalize by blocking out fear and staying calm under pressure. Moreover, they focus on the next lap. This ability to reset and move forward helps them stay confident and not spiral into self-blame. That’s what mental endurance looks like—staying focused, even when pressure mounts. The Neuroscience of High-Speed Decision-Making Formula 1 drivers operate under immense cognitive demand. Decisions are made at over 200 mph, where delays of even 100 milliseconds can cost critical positions. Neurologically, this kind of performance is powered by lightning-fast sensorimotor processing, intense prefrontal cortex regulation, and deeply rehearsed muscle memory. Drivers must suppress panic responses while staying hyper-attuned to micro-adjustments in grip, track conditions, and physical mechanics—all while strategizing positionally. The Calm Before the Storm The day began with foreshadowing. A red flag late in practice brought the session to a halt after a driver clipped the wall near Turn 1. The contact was minor, but the symbolism wasn’t. This track doesn’t tolerate hesitation. In F1, the margin of error is so slim, even a whisper of overcorrection can end your day. Teamwork in the Pit Pit stops happen in under three seconds. The crews resemble a trauma surgical unit more than a garage team. Each movement is rehearsed, choreographed, and timed to perfection. They embody “group flow,” a psychological state where communication becomes intuitive and roles dissolve into seamless execution. Any hesitation or ego can derail performance. It’s not just about speed; it’s about working as a unit. Fandom, Identity, and the Psychology of Spectating F1 spectators don’t just watch—they feel. The crowd surges with adrenaline, anticipation, and tribal loyalty. Wearing team colors or chanting a favorite driver’s name isn’t superficial, it’s a form of identity affirmation. Psychologically, sports spectatorship provides a sense of belonging, catharsis, and even physiological changes due to intense emotional investment—mimicking the highs and lows of direct competition. Staying Calm in Chaos One veteran incident marshal, who has worked high-risk posts at international circuits including last year’s Mexican Grand Prix, recalled a moment where they narrowly avoided serious injury during a chaotic race start. Ducking quickly when a car launched off the line unexpectedly, this story highlights the importance of staying calm but vigilant. These workers on the sidelines are just as mentally strong as the drivers on the track. What This Teaches Us Not everyone is a race car driver. But we all know what it’s like to work hard and still not come out on top. We all have moments where we think we’ve won—only to see things change at the last second. This sport quickly showed me that doing your best doesn’t always mean winning. What matters is staying steady, adapting fast, and continuing forward. This was demonstrated by the F1 drivers when they returned later that day for the sprint qualifying. SQ1: Echoes of Earlier Chaos With just over two minutes left in the first Sprint Qualifying (SQ1) race, that same, rare phenomenon unfolded as three drivers settled in with matching lap times, locked in a dead heat at the top of the board: Lando Norris, Max Verstappen, and Kimi Antonelli. It was déjà vu. The leaderboard froze. Fans held their breath. And just like in practice, it came down to a final push. George Russell delivered—a lap of 1:27.6 that broke the tie and sent the rest tumbling. SQ2: Precision Under Pressure SQ2 saw tension rise another level. With a 1:27.3, Oscar Piastri lit up the board early, followed closely by Norris and Antonelli—again separated by mere tenths. Verstappen and Russell hovered in the mix, while Hamilton edged in at tenth with a solid final effort. In the closing seconds, Norris took the top spot. But it wasn’t by domination, it was by 0.1 seconds (s). The heartbreak wasn’t theatrical, it was clinical. It lived in the timing data, not yet in the faces of the audience. SQ3: The Final Push The final session delivered everything fans could’ve hoped for. Russell opened strong, posting a 1:26.7. Verstappen trailed by just 0.2s. Albon shocked many by sliding into third—momentarily. And then came Kimi Antonelli. The rookie driver, cool under pressure, nailed his lap: 1:26.4. Clean, fast, and unfazed with a staggering time that redefined the grid. Piastri came within 0.045s. Norris followed at 0.1s. Final Top 10 Qualifying Results: Antonelli – 1:26.4, Piastri – +0.0s, Norris – +0.1, Verstappen – +0.2, Russell – +0.3, Leclerc – +0.3, Hamilton – +0.5, Albon – +0.7, Hadjar – +1.0, Alonso – +1.3 What It Means The first Italian to take the pole 1 position in Miami didn’t do it with luck. He did it with precision and poise. This is a tremendous advantage as it determines the starting grid on race day. Antonelli showed that pressure doesn’t break everyone—sometimes, it sharpens them. And that’s the story of this qualifying day: the ones who kept calm, adapted fast, and didn’t flinch were the ones who rose. This wasn’t chaos. It was evolution. And for anyone watching—whether you’re a driver, a student, or someone just trying to push through the unknown—it was inspiring. Day 3: Final Race Though Antonelli had the P1 position, he was unable to stay in the top 5 as the race took a surprising turn. We saw Norris rise quickly to the top, but suddenly he was eclipsed by none other than his McLaren teammate, Piastri with a smooth and flawless 1:28.5. Final Top 10 Race Results: Piastri – 1:28.5, Norris – +4.6s, Russell – +37.6, Verstappen – +39.9, Albon – +48.0, Antonelli – +55.5, Leclerc – +57.0, Hamilton – +60.1, Sainz – +60.5, Tsunoda – +74.4 When Effort Isn’t Enough Formula 1 isn’t just about speed. It’s about heartbreak, recalibration, and the kind of focus that outlasts disappointment. You can be flawless—and still get bumped. You can hit the exact same mark as the person ahead of you—and still land behind them. That’s not just racing. That’s life. The real lesson echoes mental flexibility. Can you stay calm while the rankings shift? Can you push again when it feels like the moment passed? Can you find value in the effort even when the result falls short? As a medical student applying to psychiatry, what struck me most wasn’t just the speed, it was the silence as drivers exited their cars. The deep, practiced calm each driver shows after heartbreak. It mirrors the same discipline we’re taught in medicine: show up, stay steady, and keep going—even when you don’t know the outcome. That’s the lesson racing gives back to the rest of us. Focus only on what you can control: not the clock or the conditions, but your actions and most importantly, your mind. In a world ruled by uncertainty and time is unforgiving, resilience is the only way to keep driving forward. Mind over milliseconds isn’t just a racing principle. It’s a way to live. That’s it for now. Signing off! Contact Me Want to learn more about what’s out there in the world of medicine and human behavior? - My Father, Sidney Liebowitz Had Unique Talents | sun-times
My Father, Sidney Liebowitz Had Unique Talents By Ira Liebowitz Apr 23, 2026 My Dad Had Gifted Hands. He Could Fix Just About Anything Made Of Nuts, Bolts, Wood, Iron, Wires, Or Turquoise. He was also gifted in other ways. On a shelf in our home sat a model airplane made of balsa wood. Painted blue and gray, it had an unusual triangular shape. There, in my room all the time, was essentially the prototype for the stealth bomber. My dad also pursued lapidary work (the art of cutting, shaping, and polishing stones, minerals, and gemstones into jewelry or decorative items) and silversmithing. His exquisite jewelry—bolos, rings, and other pieces—were things the neighbors would admire. A generous man, he gave away many of his creations. In my apartment, a wooden box holds an elegant bolo that I wear on special occasions. On the back of the silver are the initials “S.L.,” which stand for Sidney Liebowitz, but also for “Silver Leaf.” Dad adopted this name much like a writer uses a pen name. He respected Native American traditions and became, in a sense, a Jewish cowboy. My father also had strong street smarts. My mother, Rhonda, and I often turned to him for advice on everything, and ninety-nine percent of the time he was right. He was frequently correct about politics as well. In the spring of 2003, Dad dictated a letter of advice to President Bush, urging him to keep U.S. troops at home to guard the borders and not invade Iraq. To our surprise and joy, the president responded immediately. That framed letter now hangs on my mother’s dining room wall. In our view, President Bush should have taken my dad’s advice. My father, Sidney Liebowitz. Previous Next
- 5 Ways to Naturally Support Summer Energy And Focus | sun-times
5 Ways to Naturally Support Summer Energy And Focus By Feature Impact Jul 30, 2026 Summertime Means Sunshine, Longer Days, Family Vacations And Social Events Everywhere You Look - But Summer Can Slip Away If You Feel Too Tired And Distracted To Make The Most Of Your Experiences. According to a survey conducted by Atomik Research on behalf of Botanic Tonics, many adults ages 21 and older struggle to feel fully present in summer activities. Nearly half of respondents said having enough energy and a clear mind would help them get more enjoyment out of the summer moments that matter most. With that in mind, here are five simple daily habits to support your energy and focus throughout the rest of the summer season. Improve Your Sleep Quality It might sound obvious, but getting better sleep should be a top priority for anyone trying to harness more physical and mental energy throughout the day. Keep your bedroom cool, dark and quiet; avoid consuming caffeine too close to bedtime; and wind down with a relaxing routine like reading or Yoga. Get Regular Exercise Even though a workout consumes energy in the short term, it pays you back with dividends. Just 30 minutes of movement a day - including favorite summer activities like swimming or playing games in the yard - can improve your mood. Physical movement also helps reduce stress, which was a reported obstacle for 33% of survey respondents who wished they could be more present with friends and family during the summer months. Stay Hydrated When the weather is hot, it becomes more important to stay on top of your hydration. Even mild dehydration can negatively impact your energy and focus. When you're out of the house, bring a reusable water bottle and set reminders to drink regularly, especially during and after outdoor activities. Limit Device Usage When you're feeling sluggish, it can be tempting to collapse on the couch or in bed to scroll on your phone or watch TV. There's nothing wrong with screen time in moderation, but digital fatigue is real and it can drain your energy and disrupt your sleep. Plus, 49% of surveyed adults said Social-Media-driven FOMO ("fear of missing out") made it harder for them to enjoy their summer experiences in the moment. Try Botanical Energy Offerings When energy levels start to dip, it's easy to reach for a cup of coffee, a sugary energy drink or soda. Products made with thoughtfully sourced botanical ingredients offer a different approach. For example, Botanic Tonics' "feel free" kava-centric supplements are designed to deliver chilled energy: a unique combination of energy, focus and elevated mood. For smooth, sustained energy without caffeine jitters or sugar crashes, try KavaMate, crafted with noble kava root and yerba mate. For those looking to elevate their mood and enhance focus, feel free Classic is thoughtfully crafted with noble kava root and natural whole leaf kratom - never synthetic ingredients, alcohol or concentrates.
