- A New Hope: For People with Alzheimer’s Disease
A New Hope: For People with Alzheimer’s Disease May 26, 2022 Share There could be promising news for the more than six million Americans living with Alzheimer’s Disease and the people who care for them. What is Alzheimer's Disease? Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is an Irreversible, Progressive Brain Disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills and eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common cause of Dementia among older adults. Dementia is the loss of cognitive functioning (thinking, remembering, and reasoning) and behavioral abilities to such an extent that it interferes with a person’s daily life and activities. Dementia ranges in severity from the mildest stage, when it is just beginning to affect a person’s functioning, to the most severe stage, when the person must depend completely on others for basic activities of daily living. The cause(s) of Alzheimer’s Disease are poorly understood. In people with early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease, a genetic mutation may be the cause. Late-onset Alzheimer’s Disease arises from a complex series of brain changes that occur over decades. The causes probably include a combination of Genetic, Environmental and Lifestyle Factors. The importance of any one of these factors in increasing or decreasing the risks of developing Alzheimer’s Disease may differ from person to person. Pathological changes in the brain are thought to begin a decade or more before memory and other cognitive problems appear in Alzheimer’s Disease Patients. During this pre-symptom stage, people seem to be symptom-free, but toxic changes are taking place in the brain. Abnormal deposits of Proteins form Amyloid Plaques and Tau Tangles throughout the brain. Once-healthy Neurons stop functioning, lose connections with other Neurons and die. Although nearly one in every three people will eventually be afflicted and it’s the third leading cause of death of older adults in the U.S. (surpassed only by Heart Disease and Cancer in Non-Pandemic years), there may be effective treatments on the horizon. One contender is about to start a Phase I Clinical Trial. It’s a Novel Drug known as NVG-291 and it’s designed to repair Damaged Nerves. Originally developed by NervGen Pharma Corp. (TSX-V: NGEN) (OTCQX: NGENF) to treat Spinal Cord Injuries, it soon became apparent that the drug may be healing Nerve Damage at a biologically fundamental level. That suggests it can also help people who have Multiple Sclerosis and Alzheimer’s Disease. According to NervGen President & CEO Paul Brennan, NVG-291 is a truly unique and logical approach to treating Alzheimer’s Disease Patients. “What differentiates NVG-291 from other drugs in development is that it leverages multiple mechanisms for repairing Nerve Damage,” he explains, “while most others focus on a single approach. Alzheimer’s Disease is a complex condition and likely caused by multiple factors. We believe that a systems approach to treating the Disease is an important distinction.” NVG-291 is designed to achieve this by liberating the body’s own repair mechanisms to accelerate Nerve Repair. When Nerve Damage occurs, either as a result of an injury or disease, molecules called Chondroitin Sulfate Proteoglycan, or CSPG accumulate and inhibit the body’s ability to repair itself. NervGen’s Technology is designed to counteract this inhibition and result in the initiation of multiple repair mechanisms, including Nerve Regeneration and Remyelination - the repair of the protective coating of the Nerves. It should also improve plasticity, which is where surviving Nerves take on additional functions. There are two additional mechanisms that are seen to be very important in treating Alzheimer’s Disease. Data in animal studies show that inflammation in the Immune Cells of the Brain is reduced and autophagy, a cellular cleaning mechanism necessary for healthy Neurons, is promoted. Researchers believe the same Nerve-Rejuvenating Biotechnology can be adapted to remedy this mind-desecrating disease. Currently approved Alzheimer’s Disease Drugs merely address symptoms, whereas NVG-291 should act at a more fundamental level to let normal repair mechanisms kick in to create a favorable environment for Nerves to grow and form entirely new Nerve Connections, according to Brennan. The ability to bring to bear numerous mechanisms of repair, including two that are increasingly viewed as critical to addressing Alzheimer’s Disease, represents an unprecedented Medical Breakthrough. - Kreepy Tiki and Old Ghosts: Bring New Art and Spirit to Downtown Hollywood
Kreepy Tiki and Old Ghosts: Bring New Art and Spirit to Downtown Hollywood Photo Credit: Van Hagen Photography - www.oldghostsftl.com April 7, 2022 Share Brittany Nicole and Jackson "JAKSIN" Valiente, partners in Kreepy Tiki and Old Ghosts of Hollywood, the famous Fort Lauderdale Retail Collection of "art, antiquities and oddities" and tattoo parlor, were in a bind. After almost 15 years, they had lost their lease and needed to find the perfect new space. Passing by Melina's at 2010 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood, Florida 33020, enroute to an estate sale to shop for the store, they spied the store's iconic vintage-designed sign and windows. "Wow," said Valiente, "wouldn't it be great if we could find a shop that looks like that?" Little did they know that the estate sale they were visiting was at the home of Melina's owner, the much-loved Hollywood Doyenne Elsie Johns, who passed away last month at a 100 years young and it was indeed available for rent! "It was like divine intervention," said Nicole. "We got along really well with Elsie's family and it took off from there -- it was a perfect fit!" Valiente and Nicole have been working together for about eight years. First, she helped run the business side of Kreepy Tiki, which at that time also included a bar, music, and frequent themed events. Then about four years ago, they closed the bar and partnered to open Old Ghosts, a unique art gallery and emporium with "a huge range of old, weird stuff and original art, from the Victorian Era to the '60s," explained Nicole. "It's an eclectic art collection of almost anything that's old." Kreepy Tiki and Old Ghosts enjoy a great loyal following, both locally and on social media. "People travel from everywhere," she noted. The partners love the increased walk-in traffic at their new Hollywood location. "We've been amazed at how crazy busy it's been already here," Nicole continued. "There are so many people, the events are awesome and it's great how the city is so heavily involved. It's truly a different world from where we came from, where we were so isolated. Here, the other local businesses have been so friendly -- everyone helps each other out with promoting…it's wonderful." Valiente has been a Tattoo Artist for over 20 years and along with his Kreepy Tiki team does work from the simple to the extreme. Old Ghosts has a constantly evolving collection and is as much a museum as a retail store. They also offer photo shoot packages, prop rentals, custom-made and hand-painted sideshow banners. The feeling in the store is welcoming, unique and definitely weird! Elsie would be really happy! "Yup," said Valiente. "That's what everyone says." Kreepy Tiki and Old Ghosts is open from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. - Underwater Adventure Awaits: New Artificial Reef Coming to Hollywood Beach
Underwater Adventure Awaits: New Artificial Reef Coming to Hollywood Beach March 31, 2022 Share Those who experience the excitement of the underwater world, with its colorful fish and beautiful coral formations, know the thrill of seeing amazing marine life or discovering a unique formation. Divers to Hollywood Beach boast of the incredible biodiversity found just beyond the sandy shores. The word is out in the dive community on the 1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project that is heading to Hollywood Beach this Spring. The Ocean Rescue Alliance (ORA), a Marine Conservation and Restoration Non-Profit Organization that specializes in eco-art artificial reef structures that vary by biological purpose. Some structures create fish habitats or enable the restoration of oysters, mangroves and corals. Some protect coastlines and others become dive destinations. The goal of the Alliance’s “1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project” is to create Unique Art Themed Reefs in South Florida, including off of Hollywood Beach. Their very first Reef Structure is scheduled for deployment in 40 feet of water in the Central Beach area. This first site will be accessible only by boat, however future near shore snorkel sites are planned for easier access by all. ORA Artificial Reef Structures are made of eco-friendly materials that encourage natural Coral and benthic growth to create micro and macro habitats. Each structure weighs anywhere from 2,000 to 6,000 pounds to ensure that they stay in place, even through a Hurricane. The ORA Team uses a large barge to set it in place where it is expected to stay for 50 years or more. Approximately $300,000 is already invested to construct the Artificial Reef Structure and install it in the Ocean, as well as to create and support Educational Programming, on-going Reef Restoration and new Research Initiatives. Unlike most Artificial Reef Structures, The ORA’s Reefs range from high to low profile to mimic those found in the natural world. The Reef Structures include shelves and spaces that a variety of sizes and Species of Marine Life can use during the different stages of their life. The more artistic structures will also offer divers and snorkelers a destination to visit and explore. Each structure will also be “seeded” with coral fragments to help encourage coral growth. In addition to diving, the Reef Project will be an opportunity for the Public to learn about the importance of Conservation and Restoration Efforts. Programs are planned to include: Research, Education, Citizen Science, Dive/Beach Clean-Ups, Monitoring and more. Eco-Tourism opportunities are also planned and may include visits to the Reef and the ability to “outplant” Corals at the site. Prior to the Reef Structure being deployed off of Hollywood Beach, the Public will have an opportunity for an up close viewing. Visit the City’s Web-Site at: www.HollywoodFL.org for information on where to view the new structure. Once deployed, Reef Coordinates can be found on the Ocean Rescue Alliance’s Web-Site at: www.oceanrescuealliance.org . Dive Hollywood’s Reefs Did you know that….the Florida Reef Tract stretches from the Dry Tortugas all the way to the St. Lucie Inlet for nearly 360 linear miles making it the fifth largest Coral Reef Ecosystem in the World? But what exactly are Coral Reef Ecosystems and why should you check them out? Coral Reefs are large Underwater Ecosystems that have been formed over hundreds of years by Invertebrates called Coral Polyps! These Coral Polyps come in all shapes, colors and sizes but they join in colonies to form the Iconic Reefs you might recognize; they are living animals but when they pass away their exoskeletons form Stony Limestone support for the Coral formations which are how they grow over centuries! They are often called the “Rainforests Of The Sea” because although they only occupy 1% of the Ocean Floor, they are a crucial habitat for about 25% of all Ocean Species! Coral Reefs are home to thousands of different Plants and Animal Species! To learn more about our Coral Reefs, Visit the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Informational Page At: www.noaa.gov . The Florida Reef Tract is the only Coral Reef Ecosystem in the Continental United States and is divided into the Inner Reef, which is 20-30 feet deep, the Middle Reef, which is 40-60 feet deep and the Outer Reef, which is 50-100 feet deep! When diving in our Reefs, you can expect to see colorful Parrotfish, Angelfish, Barracuda, Nurse Sharks, Stingrays, Delicate Corals, Turtles and more! However, Coral Reefs are Sensitive Ecosystems that are sadly being threatened by a variety of factors like: Climate Change, Coral Bleaching, Overfishing, Boat Anchoring, etc. Visit NOAA's Coral Reef Ecosystem to learn more about the dangers that our Reefs are facing and what you can do to help! One way that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is getting involved and protecting our Oceans and everything that lives in them is by administering a State-Wide Artificial Reef Program that provides Financial and Technical Assistance to Local Coastal Governments, Non-profit Corporations and State Universities to construct, monitor and assess the Artificial Reefs. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has an Interactive Map where you can view all of the Artificial Reefs along Hollywood’s Coast! - Breathe Better With Asthma, Wherever You Are
Breathe Better With Asthma, Wherever You Are By Family Features July 18, 2024 Share If you have Asthma, you know that symptoms can come on quickly, then worsen. The things that make them do that are called triggers. An important part of managing Asthma is knowing your triggers at home, work, school or while you're outdoors. A health care provider can help you figure that out, then you can take steps to avoid those triggers and breathe easier. At Home Because Asthma is usually due to Allergies, triggers are often Allergens, or things that cause allergic reactions. Allergens such as Pet Dander, Dust Mites, Pests and Smoke can make Asthma Symptoms worse in some people, and for others, even trigger an Asthma Attack. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) suggests that it may be helpful to combine a few different strategies to help reduce exposure to triggers. People sensitive to dust can clean with a High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filtration Vacuum and use mattress and pillow covers that prevent exposure to Dust Mites. If you're sensitive to pests like Cockroaches and Rodents, consider Integrated Pest Management, which involves removing and controlling pests through methods such as traps or poison. Avoiding Tobacco Smoke, including Secondhand Smoke, can be especially helpful for some people with Asthma. At School Asthma is one of the leading reasons children miss school. At school, kids may be exposed to Dust Mites, Pests and Mold, which may be Asthma Triggers for some children. Because children spend lots of time at school, it can be helpful for teachers, school nurses or coaches to know what to do if your child's symptoms flare up. Team up with a health care provider to develop an Asthma action plan and share it with trusted adults at your child's school. At Work The workplace can have hundreds of potential triggers, like Chlorine-Based Cleaning Products, Bleaches, Hair Dyes and Metal Dust. Repeated exposures in the workplace can also lead to new triggers. Report new or worsening symptoms that occur at work to your health care provider and your workplace supervisor. Outdoors Everyday weather like cold, dry air can set off breathing problems. Air pollution can affect Asthma, too. It may be helpful to avoid some of the worst pollution by adjusting when and where you exercise. Try to avoid exercising near busy roads or industrial areas. Visit: http://airnow.gov to check your local air quality so you can plan to avoid outdoor activities when pollution is highest. Managing your triggers is just one part of keeping your Asthma under control. Work with a Health Care Provider to develop an Asthma Treatment Plan that includes taking medicines as prescribed and keeping track of your symptoms and where you are when they occur. That way, you can know what's making your Asthma worse or better. To learn more about Asthma, visit NHLBI's Learn More Breathe Better(r) program at: http://nhlbi.nih.gov/BreatheBetter. < Previous News Next News >
