Broadway & An Evening of Yiddish Classics - An Eclectic Mix of Performances This January In Aventura Aventura Digest December 18, 2024 Share The Aventura Arts and Cultural Center stage will host an eclectic mix of performances next month including, Yitzhak Fried, Rent, the Tal Cohen Trio, and more. It's a Rent reunion as the 2025 Broadway Concert Series presented by the City of Aventura begins with Tony Award® nominee Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp on Sunday, January 19 at 7 p.m. The duo is performing their new show while celebrating 30 years of friendship in an unforgettable and celebratory night of music, stories and fun. They will deliver songs from Rent and various projects throughout their careers as well as music that has influenced their lives. Since originating the role of Roger in Rent, Pascal has appeared in leading roles in the Broadway hits Aida, Memphis, Something Rotten! and Disaster! Rapp, who originated the role of Mark in Rent, just completed an acclaimed Off-Broadway run of his original show Without You and is known for starring in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and If/Then. A post-show meet and greet experience may be added to any ticket. Yitzhak Fried delivers another evening of Yiddish classics that takes audiences back to a world long gone and yet forever around. Witness Forever Yiddish 2 - More Songs from the Shtetl on Thursday, January 23 at 7:30 p.m. Born and raised in post-war Austria, Yitzhak internalized the Yiddish language and melodies that he grew up with in his parents' home. Fried leads audiences on an emotional voyage through songs and stories – sad and happy – and of course with a bissele humor. He offers more Yiddish classics that speak to the soul accompanied by acclaimed pianist Alan Mason, who has played on stages worldwide. Proceeds of this evening will go to support Leket Israel, the leading food rescue organization in Israel. Don’t miss the opportunity see this hilarious spoof when The City of Aventura presents Spamilton: An American Parody, on Friday, January 24 at 8 p.m.; Saturday January 25 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, January 26 at 2 p.m. Spamilton was regarded by The New York Times as, “smart, silly and convulsively funny!" Countless film and stage stars drop by to add to the fun and mayhem in this fictious story of a very famous writer-director-star trying to save Broadway from mediocrity and oblivion. Along the way, this sharp and loveable genius not only takes aim at Broadway's current mega-hit but manages to make hysterical mincemeat out of many classic and new Broadway shows. This musical romp offers a crash course in favorite Broadway blockbusters and features celebrity satires and pop culture zingers accompanied by hip-hop on the piano. The Huffington Post reported of this multi-generational delight that "You don't have to see Hamilton to have side-splitting fun at Spamilton." This event contains adult language or content. Don’t miss the Tal Cohen Trio on Thursday, January 30 at 8 p.m. presented by Yi Love Jewish. Grammy award-winning jazz pianist, Tal Cohen, unique style infuses jazz with traditional Middle Eastern rhythms, has performed around the world with jazz greats such as Terence Blanchard, Greg Osby, Ignacio Berroa and Joe Lovano. Tal and his ensemble have played at numerous iconic jazz festivals such as Jazzbez Jazz Festival in Ukraine, The Detroit Jazz Festival, Melbourne Jazz Festival, The Miami Beach Jazz Festival, The D.C. Jazz Festival, and NS Sopot Jazz Festival in Poland. His current collaboration with six-time Grammy Award-winner John Daversa is a duo project that explores breaking boundaries of what a duo can achieve. - Celebrating 120 Years Of Dania Beach - Kicking Off The Holiday Season In Broward's First City
Celebrating 120 Years Of Dania Beach - Kicking Off The Holiday Season In Broward's First City November 14, 2024 Share Celebrate the City’s 120th birthday and the magic of the holiday season at Light Up the Night, presented by Dania After Dark on Saturday, November 16th, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Dania Beach City Hall Plaza will transform into a winter wonderland filled with community spirit and cheer. Event admission and parking is free. Complimentary gifts to the first 120 attendees, while supplies last. Dania Beach History Originally known as Modello, the city traces its roots back to the late 19th century when it became a hub for tomato farming and the Florida East Coast Railway. The growing community optimized a spirit of progress that played a pivotal role in its development and resilience through challenges. The historic roots of the first city in Broward County date back to the 1880s, when much of what is now the FEC railroad line was laid through the area. In recognition of this transportation advantage, a pioneer and developer named W. C. Valentine planned a settlement called Modello and 12 Danish families moved from Chicago to settle there in 1898-1899. Three years later, 30 Danes were recruited from Oconto, Wisconsin, to colonize the settlement, and the first home was built by A.C. Frost, for whom a park is now named. Frost built the first general store in 1902 and became Modello’s first postmaster. He also built and donated the towns first two schools. The following year, Dania Methodist Church was erected, becoming the city’s first place of worship. When the town was incorporated in November 1904, its 35 residents, most of whom were Danes, changed the name to Dania. By 1912, Dania was a thriving community of almost 1,200 people and continued to grow through the 1920s when the city suffered tremendous setbacks. In 1925, the Dania Hotel caught on fire, and the Bank of Dania failed due to embezzlers in the Bank’s Atlanta home office. The 1926 hurricane with its 200 mile-per-hour winds devastated the town, destroying the first church building completely, and subsequent damage prompted residents to vote for annexation to the neighboring City of Hollywood. De-annexation came in 1927. Tomato Capital of the World Early immigrants prospered in tomato farming and, as early as 1910, the Florida East Coast Railway was shipping to northern U.S. cities from "The Tomato Capital of the World." During the three-month winter harvest, over 200 farmers shipped 1,000 to 1,500 train carloads of tomatoes and V. Taoring of New Orleans set up a tomato paste factory which contributed to local prosperity. In 1927, the first Tomato Day Celebration was held to raise funds for the new Dania Methodist Church. Attracting a crowd of over 5,000, it was so successful, that the celebration continued into the 1940s featuring messy, but official, tomato fights and a Miss Tomato Festival Pageant. In the late 1940s, the tomato boom was over, as crops began to fail from saltwater intrusion into the fields. Antique Capital of the South Just as the tomato industry was fading, a new type of commerce -- the antique business -- arrived when Genevieve and Willard Ely set up shop in 1945. It took 10 years for other antique businesses to follow, but it wasn’t long thereafter that Broward’s first incorporated city once again gained fame, this time as the "Antique Capital of the South," along Federal Highway. Antique Row became not only a browser’s and shopper’s paradise but also the stores themselves are located inside buildings steeped in the city’s history including Broward County’s first movie theater. The City has a wealth of historic architecture and a variety of architectural styles including Greek Revival (Dania Bank Building 1923); Mission Revival (Model Land Company Building 1900); Mediterranean Revival (the Martin Frost House 1913); and the Dania Beach Hotel, built by Francis Abreau in 1925. Art Deco styles are also present in the Florida Theater (1939) and the Pirates Inn, formerly the Hotel Katherine (1940). Light Up the Night The evening of November 16th will kick off with live music and festive activities followed by a dazzling drone show lighting up the night sky in celebration of the city’s rich history. The ceremonial Christmas tree lighting will join the light show finale. Families will have the chance to create lasting memories with a visit from Santa and his helpers, perfect for capturing holiday photos. Guests can also enjoy a variety of free activities and treats, including an ice-skating rink, arts and crafts, cookie decorating, and storytelling with Mrs. Claus. Participants are encouraged to join the Ugly Sweater Competition, with prizes awarded for the most festive outfits. “This isn’t just a holiday celebration; it’s a special milestone for Dania Beach as we celebrate our 120-year legacy,” said Dania Beach Parks and Recreation Director Cassi Warren. “We invite everyone to come together, share in the joy, and create wonderful memories with our amazing community! Entertainment Schedule 6:00 p.m. Collins Elementary Youth Group 6:15 p.m. South Florida Cloggers 6:25 p.m. Kwanzaa Kinara Ceremony 6:30 p.m. Elected Officials Speak to Attendees 6:40 p.m. Drone Light Show / Tree Lighting Ceremony 6:55 p.m. South Broward High School Band 7:00 p.m. Santa Arrives (scheduled to change) 7:25 p.m. Ugly Sweater Competition 7:30 p.m. TBD Road Closure: Dania Beach Boulevard from Northwest 1st Avenue to Northwest 3rd Avenue will be temporarily closed during the drone show for safety. - Standing with Israel: A Message from the Mayor of Sunny Isles Beach
Standing with Israel: A Message from the Mayor of Sunny Isles Beach By Larisa Svechin, Mayor November 17, 2023 Share Saturday, October 7, 2023, will forever be known as a day of unspeakable abomination, unimaginable evil, and an excruciating reminder that hatred and Antisemitism persist as the single most dangerous blight on the Jewish people. Absolute evil and darkness brought unthinkable horror to the people of Israel, the collective Jewish community, and the world. This unprovoked Terrorist massacre by Hamas against innocent civilians, including babies, elderly, Holocaust survivors, women, men, and even pets, was an event we never thought we would witness again. Yet, it happened while we slept. Not since the Shoah have so many Jews been terrorized, maimed, raped, tortured, and murdered. The devastation of this atrocity will affect generations. Our community collectively mourns and weeps. In some way, we all have a connection to Israel, whether through relatives, friends, friends of friends, or just the fact that it is the only democratic country in the Middle East that shares our values and beliefs. For me, it is all these things. I anxiously await news daily from my family members and our community who are living or visiting Israel. Many in our community have deeper ties to Israel, and yet, we all jointly grieve and pray. Israel remains strong and determined in the face of this adversity; they will win. However, they do not stand alone. It cannot be stressed enough how important it is for us to stand with Israel, particularly with our sister city, Netanya. Sunny Isles Beach stands with Israel. I stand with Israel. In the coming weeks, and possibly months, we must maintain and uphold our support of the people of Israel and the Jewish community of Sunny Isles Beach. Our city is a place where civilized, kind, generous, and deeply spiritual people of many nations, languages, religions, and ages live and work. As we enter the holiday season and gather for Thanksgiving dinner, remember that we are all interconnected. Now is the time to hold each other up, take time to do good, and bring light to each day. We must never forget that “in the midst of darkness, light persists.” — Mahatma Gandhi Contact Mayor Larisa Svechin at: mayor@sibfl.net . Or: (305) 792-1753. < Previous News Next News >

- The Right to Be Let Alone: What to Do When COVID Strike Force Teams Come Knocking
The Right to Be Let Alone: What to Do When COVID Strike Force Teams Come Knocking By John W. Whitehead & Nisha Whitehead July 22, 2021 Share A federal COVID-19 Vaccination Strike Force may soon be knocking on your door, especially if you live in a community with low vaccination rates. Will you let them in? More to the point, are you required to open the door? The Biden Administration has announced that it plans to send federal “surge response teams” on a “targeted community door-to-door outreach“ to communities with low vaccination rates, in order to promote the safety and accessibility of the COVID-19 Vaccines. That’s all fine and good as far as government propaganda go-es, but nothing is ever as simple or as straightforward as the government claims, especially, not when armed, roving bands of militarized agents deployed by the Nanny State show up at your door with an agenda that is at odds with what Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis referred to as the constitutional “right to be let alone.” Any attempt by the government to encroach upon the citizenry’s privacy rights or to establish a system, by which the populace can be targeted, tracked and singled out, must be met with extreme caution. These door-to-door “visits” by COVID-19 Surge Response Teams, certainly qualify as a government program, whose purpose, while seemingly benign, raises significant constitutional concerns. First, there is the visit itself. While government agents can approach, speak to and even question citizens, Americans have a right not to answer questions or even speak with a government agent. Indeed, you don’t even need to answer or open the door in response to knocking/ringing by a government agent and if you do answer the knock, you can stop speaking at any time. You also have the right to demand that government agents leave the property, once the purpose of the visit is established. When the government’s actions go beyond merely approaching the door and knocking, it risks violating the Fourth Amendment, which requires a warrant and probable cause of possible wrongdoing in order to search one’s property. A government agent would violate the Fourth Amendment, if he snooped around the premises, peering into windows and going to other areas in search of residents. Second, there is the danger inherent in these knock-and-talk encounters. Although courts have embraced the fiction that “knock and talks” are “voluntary” encounters that are no different from other door-to-door canvassing, these constitutionally dubious tactics are highly intimidating confrontations meant to pressure individuals into allowing the police, access to one’s home, which then paves the way for a warrantless, search of one’s home and property. The act of going to homes and taking steps to speak with occupants is akin to the “knock and talk” tactic used by police, which can be fraught with danger for homeowners and government agents alike. Indeed, “knock-and-talk” policing has become a thinly veiled, warrantless exercise, by which citizens are coerced and intimidated into “talking” with heavily armed police who “knock” on their doors in the middle of the night. “Knock and talks” not only constitute severe violations of the privacy and security of homeowners, but the combination of aggression and surprise employed by police is also a recipe for a violent confrontation that rarely ends well for those on the receiving end of these tactics. Third, there is the question of how the government plans to use the information it obtains during these knock-and-talk visits. Because the stated purpose of the program is to promote vaccination, homeowners and others who reside at the residence will certainly be asked if they are vaccinated. Again, you have a right not to answer this or any other question. Indeed, an argument could be made that even asking this question is improper, if the purpose of the program is merely to ensure that Americans “have the information they need on how both safe and accessible the vaccine is.” Of course, there is always the danger that this program could be used for other, more nefarious, purposes not related to vaccination encouragement. As with knock-and-talk policing, government agents might misuse their appearance of authority to gain entrance to a residence and obtain other information, about it and those who live there. Once the door is opened by a resident, anything the agents can see from their vantage point, can be reported to law enforcement authorities. Moreover, while presumably the targeting will be of areas with demonstrated low vaccination rates, there is no guarantee that this program would not be used as cover for conducting surveillance on areas deemed to be “high crime” areas as a way of obtaining intelligence for law enforcement purposes. Finally, you have the right to say “no.” Whether police are knocking on your door at 2 am or 2:30 pm, as long as you’re being “asked” to talk to a police officer who is armed to the teeth and inclined to kill at the least provocation, you don’t really have much room to resist, not if you value your life. Mind you, these knock-and-talk searches are little more than police fishing expeditions carried out without a warrant. Here’s the bottom line. These agents are coming to your home with one purpose in mind: to collect information, on you. You shouldn’t answer any questions that you’re uncomfortable an-swering, about your vaccine history or anything else. The more information you give them, the more it can be used against you. Just ask them politely, but firmly, to leave. It’s important to be as clear, as possible and you may wish to record your encounter with the government agent. You can also post a “No Trespassing” sign on your property to firmly announce, that you are exercising your right to be left alone. In this case, as in so many interactions with government agents, the First, Fourth and Fifth Amendments (and your cell phone recordings, of the encounter) are your best protection. Under the First Amendment, you don’t have to speak (to government officials or anyone else). The Fourth Amendment protects you against unreasonable searches and seizures by the government. Under the Fifth Amendment, you have a right to remain silent and not say anything, which might be used against you. As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People, while the courts may increasingly defer to the government’s brand of Nanny State authoritarianism, we still have rights. The government may try to abridge those rights, it may refuse to recognize them, it may even attempt to declare martial law and nullify them, but it cannot litigate, legislate or forcefully, eradicate them out of existence. - Get Up & Get Dancing: The City of Aventura Offers An Opportunity For Better Health
Get Up & Get Dancing: The City of Aventura Offers An Opportunity For Better Health March 18, 2022 Share The City will be offering complimentary Zumba classes to Aventura residents of all ages starting in March and running every Thursday. The new Zumba program will include a certified Zumba instructor teaching this fun fitness class involving aerobic movement and Latin dance. Participants should be ready to bring a positive mood, have fun and bring a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated. Cost: FREE When: Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Where: Founders Park 3105 NE 190 St. Benefits of Zumba Designed as a combination of salsa and aerobics, there’s no right or wrong way to do Zumba. As long as you move to the beat of the music, you’re participating in the exercise. And since Zumba involves movement of the entire body — from your arms to your shoulders and to your feet — you’ll get a full-body workout that doesn’t feel like work. A small study found that a standard, 39-minute Zumba class burned an average of 9.5 calories per minute. This adds up to 369 calories in total throughout the class. The American Council on Exercise recommends that individuals burn 300 calories per workout in order to promote weight loss and maintain a healthy bodyweight. Zumba fits their criteria perfectly. Evidence also shows that a 12-week Zumba program can provide significant improvements in aerobic fitness. Also, since music played during a Zumba class is relatively fast-paced, moving to the beat can help build your endurance after just a few workouts. You may not realize this but while doing Zumba, your mind and body work quite hard to make sure your movements follow the fast beats of the music and that your steps are aligned with others who are also dancing around you. Regular practice of Zumba boosts your mind-body coordination. Zumba is fast, intense, and rigorous. And Zumba is fun also. This is one of the main reasons why people who practice Zumba keep going back to it. They look forward to attending the class so they can dance away to the music along with their friends and family. Zumba also presents you with opportunities to socialize and make new friends. Registration Aventura residents of all ages welcome, registration is open and spots are limited. All participants must be registered prior to attending. Registration can be completed exclusively online only with a valid and existing account at cityofaventura.com/ors. - Does Your Management Company Work For The Board...Or The Owners?
Does Your Management Company Work For The Board...Or The Owners? By Christopher Carter - Real Estate Broker Associate July 20, 2023 Share This is one of those questions that initially appears to have a fairly straightforward answer, though becomes much more involved when you start considering how Florida residential Owners Associations really function. In this article, we are discussing the relationship between Owners, Boards, and Managers/Management Companies in both Condominium Owners Associations (COA’s) and Homeowners Associations (HOA’s). There are over 25,000 COA’s in Florida, and about the same number of HOA’s. I refer to them separately because they are organized and regulated quite differently, and each has its own Chapter in Florida Statutes. Though both are residential Owners Associations with elected Boards of Directors, property owner members, and the ability to hire licensed management. Property owners in Condo Buildings and HOA Communities always have ongoing questions about their Association's function, politics, and finances. This is especially true with newer owners who may not yet be familiar with the basics of Florida Association governance and operation. Before starting this discussion, you may want to take a quick look at an article from last week that gives an introduction to the basic relationship between Association Boards and Managers: Association Board or Management Company - Who's The Boss?: www.southfloridasuntimes.com/news - Today's article builds on the points presented in that earlier one. To over-simplify 2 fundamental concepts of Association governance: Board members (owners who have been elected to the Association's Board of Directors) have a Fiduciary Duty to always act in the best interest of the entire Association, using their best judgment to promote and protect the operational, administrative, and financial well-being of the Association. The Board functions as the Executive Branch of the Association's "government." Management Companies and individual Property Managers may be considered as administrative assistants to the Board, hired to help oversee and organize maintenance, record-keeping, communication, and financial accounting for the property and Association. Boards have decision-making authority when it comes to Association business, while Management Companies / Managers do not. Management can only act within the limitations of: • Florida Statutes • Association Governing Documents • Instructions from the Board • in that order! Board instructions to management cannot conflict with (or violate) Florida Statutes and the Association's Governing Documents. Florida's Condominium Act (FS Chapter 718) and Homeowner's Association Act (FS Chapter 720) allow both COA’s and HOA’s to contract with Management Companies and/or individual Property Managers to help with the administration, maintenance, communication, and financial accounting for the Association. Management Companies and Managers are paid out of the Association's operating accounts, perform their duties according to the management agreement/contract they signed, and receive their direct guidance and instruction from the Association's Board of Directors. However - hiring a Management Company or Manager does not relieve the Board of its Fiduciary Duty and responsibility to the Association. In Florida, any company or individual performing management duties and services to an Owners Association must hold a current Community Association Manager or Community Association Management Firm license from the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. A Property Manager for a condo building or Association-governed community can work under a couple of different arrangements: • A licensed Manager and a support/maintenance staff are hired and paid directly by the Association. The COA or HOA is responsible for payroll taxes, benefits, and other costs. In this case, the manager is only responsible for that specific property, usually has an onsite office, is on the property weekdays, "on call" weekends. Some condo buildings (often larger properties) even have a resident manager, with an Association-owned unit made available to the Property Manager as part of her/his compensation package. This arrangement often results in a closer working relationship with, and increased Manager accountability to the Board. • The Association contracts with a licensed Management Company to provide management services and a designated Property Manager who is employed by the company (not the Association). The Management Company is responsible for the individual manager's payroll taxes, benefits, and other employment costs. Under this arrangement, the company's Property Manager and staff can have offices on larger properties, though only rarely would a company manager be a resident manager. The Management Company is a contracted vendor to the Association. Under the second arrangement, the assigned Property Manager could be managing just that property, or be a portfolio manager who provides management services to multiple different Associations and properties. Portfolio managers do not usually spend time at any one property every day. They may only be onsite when reviewing maintenance issues or attending Board meetings. The earlier article on Board / Manager relationships mentioned above explains this further. Here is another link: www.southfloridasuntimes.com/news Management fees are variable and negotiable depending on the services required by the Association. COA’s and HOA’s with well-informed, efficient Boards who communicate well with owners often require only administrative and accounting services from a Management Company / Property Manager. On the other hand, Associations with unfocused, less-communicative Boards tend to need much more in the way of management services. In considering this week's headline question, it is important to keep 2 points in mind: • Management Companies or employee Property Managers are paid with Association operating funds which come from owners' scheduled (usually quarterly) assessments. The management contract is between the company or manager and the COA or HOA's corporation. • The Board has the authority to enter into a management contract if it feels it is in the best interest of the entire Association. An owner vote is NOT required to engage a Management Company/Manager, negotiate the terms of a management agreement, or change management service providers if the Board sees fit to do so. The Board hires, fires, and instructs Management Companies and Managers based solely on a Board decision, not an Association vote. Are you beginning to see how this article's headline question may not have an easy answer? Since Boards have direct input to the Management Company / Property Manager's duties, responsibilities, and even their job security, some companies and managers tend to think of the Board itself as their employer and do whatever is necessary to keep them happy. In my opinion, this can be short-sighted and seriously compromise the company or manager's obligations to the entire Association. When the line between a Board's function, and the duties of a Management Company / Manager becomes blurred, owners frequently feel confused and frustrated. Most of the frustration is caused by owners not knowing which one has the authority and responsibility to address a particular concern. For clarification, read your Governing Documents and Rules for Residents, then consult a Florida-Licensed attorney for application to specific circumstances. Spoiler alert - the Board has final authority over the Property Manager, whether she/he is an Association employee or works for a contracted Management Company. It is important to note here that Managers and Management Companies are not allowed to interpret legal documents or offer an opinion on legal matters affecting the Association. This is why it is crucial for all Associations to have a competent attorney who works well with both the Board and management. Management Companies and Property Managers find it necessary at times to play "referee" between a Board and owners, especially in Associations where there is already a contentious relationship between some owners and the Board. In these situations, it is very important for management to maintain a neutral approach and strive to provide the most accurate information available to both the Board and owners in the Association. So where does all this leave us in addressing whether Management Companies and Managers work for the Board or the Owners? The practical answer is both, though not in the same capacity. Management has a dual obligation to the Board in efficiently carrying out their lawful instructions AND to the entire Association (all owner members) to always discharge their duties diligently, honestly, in good faith, accurately accounting for all funds, with care and full disclosure. Management Companies and Managers assist Association Boards in protecting the collective interests of all owners, and therefore the Association as a whole. As I have said in many previous articles - the keys to living in an Association-governed building or community are education and participation. Learn all you can about how yours operates, then participate in the business of running it. Editor's Note: Christopher Carter is NOT an attorney. He does not give legal advice. For interpretation and application to specific circumstances of anything you read in this article, you must speak with a Florida-Licensed attorney.
