  • Don’t Get Caught Up with the Crowd

Don’t Get Caught Up with the Crowd By Bryan Golden May 26, 2022 Share Many problems we have could be avoided or minimized if more people refused to follow the crowd. Group behavior often instills fear and panic as it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Regardless of reality, the crowd is led with false premises. They then behave as if what they are being told is true. As a result, their actions transform the alleged circumstances into reality. For example, there are reports that a specific bank might be having financial problems. In fact, there is no truth to the rumors. Nevertheless, its customers panic, causing a run on the bank. Now the bank does have monetary difficulties. Crowd mentality is a powerful force that sweeps up many as it builds momentum. However, crowd mentality is rarely grounded in logic or reasonable thinking. Group think assimilates individuals who, by themselves, normally aren't governed by fear. One major contributing factor to the crowd mentality is media hysteria. The media's choice of words when reporting on events has a huge impact. Subjective descriptions are used to evoke a specific reaction. When the headlines are dire, the crowd behaves accordingly. A negative group mindset is as contagious as an Epidemic. Individuals are subjected to peer pressure. They are chastised for any contrarian views. Mob psychology has impacted us throughout history. People caught up in a crowd mentality accept what they are told without questioning its validity. The result is a few controlling many. Just watch how a few sheepdogs can direct a herd of hundreds of sheep. People will behave as part of the crowd in ways they would never imagine were they acting independently. You want to guard against being pulled into the crowd. Although it’s tempting to go along with the flow, resistance is worth the effort. Giving up your individuality carries too high of a price. There are some simple steps you can take to avoid getting caught up with the crowd. You don’t have to participate in any mass hysteria. You are in control of your thoughts and actions. Think for yourself. Ask questions. What is the source of the information you are getting and what is the bias? Also, is there any hidden agenda? What works for others isn’t necessarily right for you. You need not follow along just because someone else is behaving in a particular fashion. Consider your own situation and beliefs. What makes sense for you is the essential issue. For example, let’s consider the economy. Historically, its fluctuations are cyclic. Perhaps there is a downturn and the crowd is yelling that the sky is falling. However, you have an income and are OK financially. Why should you change your behavior and go along with the crowd? What about a situation where the opposite exists? The crowd is gushing about a surging economy. Yet, you have lost your job and are struggling. In this case, you must tailor your actions to accommodate your situation. What others say or think about you doesn’t matter. Your life shouldn’t be structured to seek approval. You are responsible for your actions along with the results. You can’t blame anyone else for what you do. The excuse, “everyone else was doing it” doesn’t have any validity. When you follow the crowd, you abdicate your free will. The risk is doing things you may regret. Your behavior may then also exacerbate your own situation, making problems worse. Crowd behavior and attitude is often negative. By getting caught up in it, you get pulled down. Stay independent, remain positive and follow your own path. You will be happier and accomplish more! • Don Soffer Aventura High School: “A+” Inaugural Year Centers on Academic Excellence

Don Soffer Aventura High School: “A+” Inaugural Year Centers on Academic Excellence By Joyce R. Forchion - LOVE, AVENTURA. September 10, 2022 Share Who is considered a celebrity in Aventura? To some, residents would quickly point out any American Express Centurion Black Card holder perusing shelves lined with designer handbags at Nordstrom. To others following the city’s rapid expansion of top-tier educational institutions in the neighborhood, the correct answer would be teenagers who were selected to enroll at Don Soffer Aventura High School (DSAHS), Aventura’s first and only tuition-free municipal charter school. After successfully completing a commendable inaugural year led by Dr. Geoff McKee, the school’s visionary principal, administrators, teachers, and support staff united on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 to welcome students attending grades nine through eleven to campus for the fall semester, including the addition of its first senior class. Capping off its second year with stellar news courtesy of the Florida Department of Education, which recently confirmed the school’s “A” grade for exceptional performance in English language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science, DSAHS students remain focused on an adventurous new chapter paving the way to the college admissions process. Don Soffer Aventura High School’s presence has already garnered attention from executives considering relocation to Aventura with hopes of enrolling their college-bound teenagers in the exceptional institution. Graduating from DSAHS will place high-achieving students on the fast-track to entrance consideration and scholarship opportunities from distinguished universities worldwide, especially given the meritorious diploma designations available at the school. For instance, students can earn the University of Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) Diploma through an accelerated academic curriculum and assessment program facilitated by the University of Cambridge’s nonprofit department in England, where students are taught to integrate independent thinking, peer collaboration, and 100 hours of community service into their class applications. Additionally, the College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Capstone Diploma is also available to students who excel in two courses– AP Seminar and AP Research– and complete intensive study in four selected AP courses requiring minimal scores of “three” on a five-point scale. Though students at Don Soffer Aventura High School are taught the importance of earning impressive credentials that would attract scholarship panels and college admissions representatives - such as high test scores and detailed resumes - they are also encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities and athletic programs promoting character-building objectives and decisive leadership skills. The open enrollment lottery admissions process for the 2023-2024 school year will begin in January 2023, and details will be announced later this year. Admission preference is granted to applicants who have lived in Aventura for at least one year before the commencement of the lottery period, along with siblings of students currently attending the school. • Giving Hate No Residence in Florida: Representative Michael Gottlieb’s Antisemitism Bill Signed Into Law

Giving Hate No Residence in Florida: Representative Michael Gottlieb’s Antisemitism Bill Signed Into Law July 4, 2024 Share In a decisive move to combat the rising tide of Antisemitism, Florida has made a significant legislative stride. This month, Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law House Bill 187, a landmark piece of legislation that codifies the definition of Antisemitism as established by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). This new law aims to provide clear guidelines and examples to help identify and address Antisemitic behavior, marking a pivotal step in the fight against hate and intolerance. Recent surveys reveal a concerning trend: nearly a third of Americans are either unsure of what Antisemitism means. This lack of awareness poses a significant challenge in addressing the issue effectively. The IHRA definition of Antisemitism serves as a crucial educational tool, clarifying what constitutes Antisemitic behavior while ensuring that the exercise of First Amendment rights remains unimpeded. By providing precise explanations and practical examples, the IHRA definition helps individuals—from police officers to students—recognize and stand against Antisemitism. The Significance of The New Law House Bill 187, championed by Representative Michael Gottlieb (D-Davie), adopts the IHRA’s working definition of Antisemitism. According to the bill, Antisemitism is defined as “a certain perception of Jewish individuals which may be expressed as hatred toward such individuals.” This definition encompasses both rhetorical and physical manifestations of Antisemitism, targeting not only Jewish individuals but also their property, community institutions, and religious facilities. By embedding this definition into all sections of Florida law, the bill ensures a comprehensive approach to combating Antisemitism. Representative Gottlieb expressed his gratitude and pride in the unanimous support the bill received from both the House and Senate. “I applaud and humbly thank my fellow legislators in the House and Senate who stood shoulder-to-shoulder and worked with me to unanimously pass this vital legislation to protect our brothers and sisters,” he stated. He highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting the unprecedented rise in Antisemitic incidents following Hamas’ terror assault on October 7th. Gottlieb emphasized that the law sends a clear message: “Hate will not be tolerated in our State. Florida condemns all Hate Crimes, and we will remain steadfast in our commitment to fighting for Jews everywhere to be able to live and worship safely and freely.” The passage of the law is expected to have a profound impact on the state’s efforts to combat Antisemitism. By providing a clear and actionable definition of Antisemitism, the law equips Law Enforcement, Educators, and Community Leaders with the tools they need to recognize and address Antisemitic behavior effectively. This, in turn, can help prevent incidents of hate and intolerance from escalating into violence. Furthermore, the bill introduces criminal penalties for Antisemitic and Racist Activities, reinforcing the state’s Zero-Tolerance stance on Hate Crimes. This legislative framework not only enhances protection for the Jewish community but also serves as a deterrent to those who might engage in Antisemitic behavior. The enactment of HB 187 places Florida at the forefront of the national fight against Antisemitism. The state’s proactive approach serves as a model for other states grappling with similar issues. By adopting the IHRA definition, Florida aligns itself with international standards for identifying and combating Antisemitism, fostering a united front against hate. The bill has garnered widespread support from various sectors, including Law Enforcement, Educational Institutions, and Civil Rights Organizations. Many see it as a crucial step in addressing not just Antisemitism but also the broader spectrum of Hate Crimes that have been on the rise in recent years. A Call to Action Combating Antisemitism requires ongoing efforts to raise awareness, promote understanding, and foster an environment of respect and inclusivity. The law provides a robust foundation, but it is the collective responsibility of all Floridians to build upon it. Representative Gottlieb’s words resonate strongly in this context: “We must remain vigilant in protecting our communities. We must do everything within our means to thwart the unparalleled rise in Antisemitic incidents.” This sentiment underscores the importance of community involvement and solidarity in the fight against hate. By working together, Florida can set a powerful example of how to give hate no residence and ensure a safer, more inclusive future for all. As the law comes into effect, it is incumbent upon every Floridian to support and uphold its principles, fostering a community where everyone can live without fear of hatred or discrimination. < Previous News Next News >

  • Enhancing Cybersecurity - The AI Advantage | sun-times

Enhancing Cybersecurity - The AI Advantage By Merilee Kern, MBA Jul 22, 2025 In Today’s World Where Cyber Threats Are Becoming Increasingly Complex And Downright Relentless, The Application Of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Toward Cybersecurity Strategies Is A Welcome Advancement Helping Us Protect Our Digital Environments. Sophisticated machine learning algorithms and predictive analytics are empowering organizations to better predict, identify, mitigate and neutralize cyber threats quickly and far more accurately. “Cybersecurity is undergoing a paradigm shift, transitioning from threat reaction to threat prediction and prevention,” said Angel Vossough, Co-Founder and CEO of AI solutions developer BetterAI. “This change is set to be foundational to the industry, moving it toward security solutions that are more proactive than ever before.” Here’s a deeper dive with Vossough on how AI is enhancing cybersecurity and better safeguarding the collective digital landscape. What are some of the top-line impacts AI is having on the cybersecurity function? For one, the incorporation of AI into cybersecurity provides capabilities to detect and respond to active threats in real-time. AI is then also able to learn from these threats and identify vulnerabilities in systems before they are exploited. These abilities drastically reduce the time taken to identify and mitigate current and potential security breaches. Predictive security measures are already a long-standing aspect of modern cybersecurity practices. However, even the best human-based techniques are unable to catch all potential vulnerabilities in systems of ever-growing complexity and size. AI is the next evolution in the cybersecurity arms race. What are some of the challenges of integrating AI into cybersecurity methods? AI's superhuman skill in pattern recognition and mass data processing allows it to sift through vast amounts of data and pinpoint threats that may go unnoticed by human analysts. Whether detecting network intrusions or analyzing system behaviors to uncover vulnerabilities or malware, AI has a critical role to play. The need for AI in cybersecurity becomes even more pressing as cybercriminals increasingly adopt AI for their own malicious purposes. However, the integration of AI into cybersecurity protocols does present its own set of challenges. Biases hidden within the black box of deep learning models have the potential to create a new set of blind spots that may be challenging to detect and correct. For example, if an AI system is trained on data that predominantly features attacks from a specific geographic region, it may develop a bias that leads to a higher rate of false positives or false negatives when analyzing threats from other regions. Additionally, AI may have difficulty grasping the human motivations underlying certain cyberattacks, such as political, ideological, or personal factors that drive attackers. This limitation may negatively impact AI's predictive capabilities, as it may not be able to anticipate attacks that deviate from purely technical or financial motivations. Overcoming these obstacles requires an effort that combines the enormous power of AI with the social awareness and technical expertise of human cybersecurity and machine learning professionals. Can you cite a few AI cybersecurity solutions that are evolving in the space? The incorporation of AI into cybersecurity solutions represents a major leap forward in addressing the constantly evolving cyber threat landscape. Already we are seeing AI cybersecurity tools hit the market, including NVIDIA's Morpheus framework and IBM's Security QRadar suite. Incorporating AI into cybersecurity is not merely about improving security posture, it is an essential step in protecting our digital environment from sophisticated threats. The future is here, and the industry is undergoing a rapid change to adapt. AI's predictive capabilities enable organizations to proactively protect their networks and data from unauthorized access and exploitation. As the industry increasingly adopts AI-driven solutions, collaboration between AI experts and cybersecurity professionals is essential for developing robust, transparent, and responsible AI systems. Only through this collaborative approach can the full potential of AI be realized in creating a more secure digital environment for all. The incorporation of AI reshaping cybersecurity relative to the technology’s unparalleled ability to identify, address and rectify threats much more accurately and rapidly than ever before. AI-powered innovations are producing proactive and flexible cybersecurity systems capable of outpacing the ever-changing threat environment, fostering a much safer digital landscape. Previous Next

  • By Popular Demand - The Fantasticks Is Extended Through November 24th

By Popular Demand - The Fantasticks Is Extended Through November 24th November 14, 2024 Share By popular demand, Island City Stage has extended the run of The Fantasticks, its South Florida premiere and season opener, through November 24th, 2024! Described as “magical” and “a triumph,” Island City Stage’s newly reimagined The Fantasticks is taking sold out audiences on a nostalgic and beloved musical journey. Theatergoers won’t want to miss this extended opportunity to see this new production by original librettist and lyricist Tom Jones that features two young compelling gay leads. “‘The Fantasticks’ is the classic it is for a reason - it’s a beautiful story with a sumptuous score,” said Andy Rogow, Artistic Director of Island City Stage. “This new same-sex version just makes it all the more relatable to the fans, like me, who wore out their albums listening to it. We worked hard to obtain the rights to perform this version and I'm sure our audiences will fall in love with the show all over again.” The Fantasticks is an allegorical story loosely based on Edmund Rostand's 1894 play The Romancers (Les Romanesques), concerning two neighboring parents who trick their children into falling in love by pretending to feud. The LGBTQIA+ focused rewrite features two young gay men, Matt and Lewis, at the center of the story, instead of a young man and woman (the original characters were Matt and Luisa). According to Playbill, during its original run at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in Greenwich Village, The Fantasticks logged a record-breaking 17,162 performances. When the original production closed in 2002, news of the closing made the front page of The New York Times. In 2006, the revival opened at The Theater Center, directed by Jones. That production closed June 4, 2017, after playing 4,390 performances in the Jerry Orbach Theatre, for a combined total of 21,552 performances in New York - still the longest-running musical production worldwide. Over the years, notable names who have appeared in the Off-Broadway and touring productions have included Liza Minnelli, Elliott Gould, F. Murray Abraham, Glenn Close, Keith Charles, Carole Demas, Kristin Chenoweth and Bert Convy. This newly revised version of the classic show premiered in 2022 in Michigan. Island City Stage’s production of The Fantasticks is directed by Rogow and stars Jonny Lee Jr. (Lewis), Kevin Hincapie (Matt) Jesse Luttrell (El Gallo), Margot Moreland (Mildred), Michael Gioia (Henry); Rayner Gabriel (Mortimer); Louie San Luis (Mute) and Jeni Hacker (Bessie). The Fantasticks is Co-Produced by Michael Mullins & Terry Gaw and Mark Loeser & The Opening Doors Charitable Trust. Lights and Sound Sponsor is Scott Bennett and Set Sponsor is Glenn Goldberg. Additional funding is provided by the following: The Our Fund Foundation, The Schubert Foundation Inc., The SHS Foundation, The Maval Foundation, The Warten Foundation and the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council. Island City Stage’s 2024-25Season of powerful storytelling focusing on the nature of families also includes the upcoming shows Edward Albee's A Delicate Balance from January 16th, 2024 – February 9th, 2025, Fat Ham by James Ijames from April 3rd, 2025 – May 4th, 2025; The Dying Gaul by Craig Lucas from May 22nd, 2025 – June 15th, 2025 and At The Wedding by Bryna Turner from August 21st, 2025 – September 21st, 2025.
