  • Second Chances, First Loves: Meet Goose And Tanner | sun-times

Second Chances, First Loves: Meet Goose And Tanner South Florida Sun Times Apr 30, 2026 At any given moment inside a busy animal shelter, there are dozens—sometimes hundreds—of stories waiting to be rewritten. Some begin with uncertainty, others with loss, but all share the same hopeful middle: the chance that someone will walk through the doors and see not just a pet, but a companion. Among those waiting are Goose and Tanner—two very different animals with one thing in common: they’re ready to bring joy, comfort, and connection into the right home. Goose, a five-year-old Australian Shepherd mix, is the kind of dog who seems to carry sunshine in his stride. With bright eyes and boundless energy, he approaches life like it’s an adventure waiting to unfold. Whether he’s sprinting after a tennis ball, investigating a new scent trail, or greeting fellow dogs with enthusiasm, Goose embodies the spirit of play. For active individuals or families, he’s not just a pet—he’s a built-in motivation system, a daily reminder that life is better when you get outside and move. But Goose isn’t just about high-energy fun. Beneath that lively exterior is a thoughtful and sensitive soul. Loud noises can make him uneasy, and like many intelligent, emotionally attuned dogs, he forms strong bonds with his people. That means he may experience some separation anxiety when left alone for long periods. It’s not a flaw—it’s a reflection of how deeply he connects. For Goose, the ideal home is one where companionship is constant, whether through a human who spends a lot of time at home or another dog who can keep him company. Fortunately, Goose is already well on his way to being a great housemate. He’s crate-trained and finds comfort in having a space to call his own—a quiet retreat where he can relax and recharge. His compatibility with other dogs makes him an excellent candidate for a multi-pet household, especially one that can match his playful energy. While his history with children and cats is unknown, his affectionate nature suggests that, with patience and proper introductions, he could adapt beautifully. If Goose represents exuberance and motion, Tanner offers something quieter but equally profound. At seven years old, Tanner is a cat who has traded youthful chaos for a calm, steady affection. His past may be a mystery, but his present is full of warmth. Volunteers describe him as friendly, gentle, and deeply loving—a cat who leans into your hand for pets and happily settles in for a good cuddle session. Tanner has a particular fondness for simple pleasures. String toys and feather wands bring out his playful side, reminding everyone that age is just a number. And when the toys are put away, he’s perfectly content to bask in attention, soaking up chin scratches and belly rubs with quiet satisfaction. He’s the kind of companion who doesn’t demand constant activity but instead enriches your day with small, meaningful moments of connection. Despite his many charms, Tanner faces a challenge that has nothing to do with his personality. In a shelter environment, older cats often get overlooked in favor of kittens. Add to that the fact that Tanner is FIV positive, and his wait for a home can be longer than it should be. But here’s the truth: FIV, or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, is widely misunderstood. With proper care—regular veterinary visits, a nutritious diet, and an indoor lifestyle—cats with FIV can live long, happy, and fulfilling lives. Tanner doesn’t see himself as defined by a diagnosis, and neither should anyone else. What he offers is companionship in its purest form: steady, affectionate, and deeply rewarding. For someone seeking a calm and loving presence, Tanner is more than enough—he’s exceptional. Choosing to adopt a pet is never just about filling a space in your home; it’s about opening your life to a relationship that will grow and evolve over time. Goose and Tanner may have different needs and personalities, but they both ask for the same essential things: patience, understanding, and love. In return, they offer loyalty, joy, and a kind of connection that’s difficult to put into words. There’s something powerful about giving an animal a second chance. It’s not just about rescuing them—it’s about discovering how much they have to give. Goose will remind you to embrace life with enthusiasm, to find excitement in the everyday. Tanner will show you the beauty of quiet companionship, the comfort of a gentle presence by your side. Somewhere out there is the perfect match for each of them. Maybe it’s an active household ready for Goose’s boundless energy, or a peaceful home where Tanner can curl up and feel safe. Maybe it’s someone who didn’t realize they were ready for a pet until they met just the right one. That’s the magic of adoption — it’s not just about finding a pet. It’s about finding each other. To meet a pet at the Humane Society of Broward County, visit: www.humanebroward.com and complete the Pre-Adoption Application. The shelter is located at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312 and the Adoption Kennels open daily at 11:00 a.m. - appointments are not required. The shelter's vaccine clinic is open 6 days a week and you can learn more on the website. Goose 671426 Tanner 714391 Previous Next

  • There’s More to Death Than COVID-19

There’s More to Death Than COVID-19 By Marilyn M. Singleton, M.D., J.D. August 5, 2021 Share “Human concern in medicine, has taken a back seat to marginal scientific ethics and perhaps, secret agendas.” Marilyn M. Singleton, M.D., J.D. Breathless headlines featuring "The Virus,” are beginning to fade into a chronic undercurrent of, fear thy neighbor for he might be bearing the gift of COVID-19. What you won’t see in the headlines, are stories about a more pervasive and ultimately more lethal virus: a growing disregard for others and devaluation of life. Rampant homicides are disheartening enough, but more shocking is the shifting morality in medicine. News headlines gave the impression, that the newly instituted COVID-19 Rules were designed to save lives, yet, we soon learned that the lockdowns, masking and school closures, did more harm than good. Meanwhile, in plain sight, government-sanctioned sacrifices of the elderly were taking place. In 5 “progressive” states, COVID-19 Positive patients, were discharged from hospital isolation units and returned to their nursing homes, where they among, uninfected residents. Of course, many more residents became ill. However, it didn’t make the headlines, that half of the COVID-19 deaths, were in nursing homes, 80 percent of those deaths, were in those over 65 years of age. This might have encouraged more policies, that protected our elders and allowed the younger folks to carry on with their lives. To date, the news has not reported any apologies to the families of the victims of government and medical incompetence. In 2020, many hospitals in the United States considered guidelines that would allow doctors to withhold CPR from COVID-19 patients, ignoring the patient’s wishes. Our neighbor to the north, Quebec had actually issued such an order lasting from April to September 2020. Bless the paramedics on the front lines, who complained and had, the order lifted. Age-related rationing, is alive and well. The ethics advisor to our, 78-year-old President Biden, Ezekiel Emanuel, M.D., author of the utilitarian “Complete Lives System” of medical care, chose age 75, as his personal benchmark for ending life. This is so wrong. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “The true measure of any society, can be found in how it treats, its most vulnerable members.” Whether mentally sharp or in declining health, older people give texture and context to our lives. Reflecting on older folks, reminds us that in their lifetime, innovations have gone from puttering around in a car, to rocketing to the moon. In Dick Tracy’s comic book, a two-way wrist radio, is now a commonly worn Apple watch. The behavior of bureaucrats and the medical establishments, during the COVID-19 “crisis,” laid bare, to the dismissive treatment of elders, an uncomfortable question, still hangs in the air: Was the nursing home debacle, a conscious attempt to cull the herd? After all, Medicare chews up 15 percent of the federal budget and 25 percent of Medicare dollars, are spent in the last year of the patient’s life. According to the 2019 Medicare Trustees report, the Medicare Hospital Insurance Trust Fund will be depleted, by 2026, only a short, 5 years, away. If this form of population, control sounds un-American, remember that our country seriously engaged in eugenics, marked by 75 years of Supreme Court-approved forced sterilization. The abortion industry has devolved, from a time when a woman was mortified to have an abortion, to now, where clinics are advertised on highway billboards. The quest for clean air has gone from encouraging recycling and renewable energy, to suggesting that human depopulation, is the only way to save the planet. Human concern in medicine, has taken a back seat to marginal scientific ethics and perhaps, secret agendas. We have become numb to the experiments, using fresh, aborted fetal tissue to create “humanized mice” that sprout various human organs. This slow walk to the edge of medical ethics, has allowed science to go in grotesquely anti-human directions. Jointly, with Chinese government funding, United States researchers created viable embryos that are a mix of human and monkey cells (a “chimera.”) With funding from the Chan Zuckerberg [Mr. Facebook] Initiative, researchers, tinkered with male rats, so, they could deliver live babies via Cesarian sections. Sadly, physicians have become willing participants in the government’s borderline coercions, by not informing themselves about early treatments for COVID-19 or the side effects, of the Experimental Vaccine. Federal and state governments are bribing, cajoling and subjecting us, to door-to-door pressures, for taking an injection, of a product, that could be killing us, in numbers, not seen before. Serious reactions include miscarriages, Bell’s palsy, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, blood clotting disorders (including brain clots) and anaphylaxis. Bizarrely, the White House is challenging colleges, to vaccinate its entire campus, despite, sometimes fatal heart inflammation after vaccinations in young adults, (who have infinitesimal risk of significant COVID-19 illness). It appears, that we are guinea pigs, in a grand experiment. The elderly, were the casualties of Phase I. As the post-vaccine bodies pile up, the Nuremberg Code’s principle is being ignored: The experiment must be stopped, if continuation would result in injury and death. It’s not too late. Physicians must remember their Oath of Hippocrates, speak up and act for the benefit of their patients, even in the face of conflicting government dictates. • Aventura Youth Council Offers Young Leaders A Chance To Shape Their Community | sun-times

Aventura Youth Council Offers Young Leaders A Chance To Shape Their Community Aventura Digest Jun 25, 2026 As Communities Across The Country Seek Ways To Encourage Civic Engagement Among Younger Generations, The City Of Aventura Is Providing Local Students With A Unique Opportunity To Become Active Participants In The Future Of Their City. Through Its Youth Council Program, Aventura Is Inviting Qualified High School Students To Apply For Member Positions And Gain Firsthand Experience In Public Service, Leadership, And Community Involvement. Applications for the Youth Council are currently being accepted through Monday, June 29th, 2026. The program is open to Aventura residents who will be enrolled as juniors or seniors in a public or private high school during the 2026–2027 academic year. Selected students will serve as representatives of their peers while working closely with city leaders on a variety of educational, civic, and community-focused initiatives. The Youth Council consists of seven members selected by the City Manager. While the program offers valuable leadership experience, its broader mission is to encourage young people to become engaged citizens who understand the importance of contributing to the communities in which they live. Youth participation in civic activities has never been more important. In an era where many interactions take place online, community involvement provides young people with meaningful opportunities to connect with neighbors, understand local issues, and develop a sense of responsibility toward the common good. Programs such as the Aventura Youth Council help students move beyond observing local government and community events from a distance by allowing them to actively participate in the decision-making process and community service efforts. Research consistently shows that students who engage in volunteerism, leadership programs, and civic activities are more likely to become active citizens as adults. They develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom, including communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking. These experiences also foster confidence and help young people discover how their voices can influence positive change. For many students, serving on a youth council represents their first opportunity to work directly with government officials and community leaders. Through meetings, volunteer projects, and public events, participants gain valuable insight into how local government operates and how community programs are developed and implemented. This exposure can inspire future careers in public service, education, law, business, or nonprofit leadership. The City of Aventura’s Youth Council also serves as a bridge between local government and the younger population. Teenagers often have unique perspectives on issues affecting schools, public spaces, recreation programs, and community engagement. By including youth voices in civic discussions, cities can better understand the needs and priorities of younger residents while fostering a culture of inclusion and collaboration. In addition to attending scheduled meetings, Youth Council members are expected to participate in volunteer opportunities throughout the school year. These activities allow students to build connections with residents of all ages while making a tangible impact on the community. Whether assisting at city-sponsored events, supporting educational initiatives, or contributing to local service projects, members gain practical experience in leadership through action. Participation in community activities also benefits students on a personal level. Colleges, scholarship committees, and future employers increasingly value applicants who demonstrate a commitment to service and leadership. Beyond strengthening resumes, however, community involvement helps young people develop empathy, social awareness, and a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing their city. As Aventura continues to invest in the next generation of leaders, the Youth Council stands as an example of how local governments can empower young residents to become engaged, informed, and responsible citizens. By providing students with opportunities to serve, lead, and contribute, the program helps cultivate the civic-minded leaders who will shape the future of the community. Students who meet the eligibility requirements and are willing to commit to meetings and volunteer service throughout the school year are encouraged to apply.
