  • Pure Joy: Celebrate The Most Joyous Date on The Jewish Calendar

Pure Joy: Celebrate The Most Joyous Date on The Jewish Calendar By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil March 9, 2023 Share Recently I had the honor of being the guest speaker at the MAR-JCC on the topic of Joy. Although I get to speak there quite often, this time the participants were especially engrossed in the topic, since Joy is something that we all want to experience. I welcomed all sorts of questions, as we together discovered the different levels of joy, and how to best bring them about. According to statistics, there are more people who suffer from some sort of depression than any other disease. While some treat this terrible mental illness with pills, the Talmud tells us that Joy breaks all barriers and that the more we fill ourselves with joy, the less time we think about ourselves, and the less we suffer. Helping others and keeping our mind focused on helping others is another way to fight depression. It’s mind boggling to see how huge of an epidemic it is, in this day and age, when we have more technology than ever, and better applications to help us be in touch with friends. Yet the suffering of a lack of real friends and friendship is as prevalent as ever. On Purim, when the holiday is really all about Joy, we deal with all of the above! The four special Mitzvas associated with Purim, are 1) Giving gifts of money to at least two poor people. 2) Sending food gifts, made up of at least two types of foods, to at least one friend. 3) Enjoying a festive Purim meal, preferably with friends. And 4) Recounting the story of the Purim miracle, by reading the Megilla, also known as the Scroll of Esther. When we take the focus off of ourselves, and instead see how we can help others, by giving charity and giving gifts of food. When our focus is shifted from celebrating in silence, to having a meal with others. When we remember the miracles that occurred, not just to our ancestors many years ago, but also to us, over and over again.. It really forces us to bring out our inner joy, and slowly transform it into a pure joy! The festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar. It begins this year after sundown on Monday, March 6 and ends at nightfall on Tuesday, March 7. The holiday commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in Ancient Persia from Haman's plot "to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day." I encourage you to contact your local Chabad or synagogue to see what they’re doing to celebrate. You’re of course welcome to join us, free of charge, at our annual Purim Party! I invite you to join me in strapping on your flight attendant or pilot suit and brace yourself for liftoff at this year’s Purim celebration, dubbed “Purim - A First Class Experience on Hakhel Air”! It’s Chabad Chayil's creative twist to this year’s community celebration of Purim. The festivities will be held right behind the construction site at 2601 Northeast 211th Terrace, North Miami, Florida 33180 on Tuesday, March 7th, featuring live music, food and lots of fun. Every seven years is a Hakhel year. In ancient times, during a Hakhel year, Jews would stream to Jerusalem to unite in the Beit Hamkidash. For more information about the Hakhel year, please go to our website at: https://www.chabadchayil.org/generic_cdo/aid/742767/jewish/Hakhel.htm Currently celebrating a year of Hakhel, we chose the theme of traveling together to Israel, enjoying our Purim meal together on Hakhel Air. We’ll enjoy a delicious sit-down dinner (not airplane food), exciting in-flight entertainment and a duty-free bar. Megillah will take place in the ‘lounge’ as we’ll be of course traveling first class! Billed as the most joyous date on the Jewish calendar, the daylong holiday commemorates the nullification in 356 B.C.E. of a Persian decree calling for the extermination of the Jewish people throughout the Persian Empire as told in the biblical Book of Esther. Chabad’s original spin on this age-old holiday has helped bring the spirit of Purim to the area year after year. The event is a community-wide program, and all are welcome to join, regardless of affiliation or background. Children and adults will enjoy great Israeli foods, a live rock band & plenty of other ‘in-flight’ entertainment. There is no charge for anyone to join, though donations always help us bring quality programs to the community. • The American Dream

The American Dream June 11, 2021 Share Mo Mohamed & Paul Kruss: A Success Story Everybody in the vicinity of Aventura, North Miami Beach, Sunny Isles, Golden Beach, Hallandale, and Hollywood knows Mo Mohamed, the owner of Mo’s Bagels & Deli. His welcoming smile and accommodating manner immediately engage you. And, of course his fabulous menu of delicacies, bagels and bakery items keep bringing customers back to his restaurants (now two!) in droves. “Meet me at Mo’s” is the mantra of friends and business associates all through the week. Now, at his second location in Hallandale Beach at the site of the former Sage Deli, that slogan is emblazoned on the walls. Here, with his new enlarged wide-mouthed ovens, Mo’s bakers are able to produce hundreds of dozens of bagels a day. Mo Mohamed exemplifies the American Dream. He arrived from Egypt in 1984 as a young guy in pursuit of opportunity, with not too much more than hope in his pocket, a smile, and a great work ethic. He began working as a dishwasher, then a busboy in Pumpernik’s, then on Hallandale Beach Boulevard. In a short time, he moved up to learning the delicate slicing techniques of lox and deli meats, and within the seven years he was there, acquired skills in cooking, purchasing, and management. Building a reputation as a man who knows the deli business, which is unlike any other type of restaurant, Mo was approached by Harriet and Marie, owners of Bagel Cove to help them build their business. They offered him a junior partnership and a large increase in salary, plus a percentage of the profits. Mo says he owes a lot to them and is very grateful for the opportunities they offered him. In 1995, Jay Mazen, a regular at Bagel Cove, who became a dear friend, convinced Mo that with his knowledge and experience and working 12-15 hours a day, he should own his own deli restaurant. At the time, the owners of Delancey Deli, located on NE 187th Street, were looking to sell their restaurant, and with Jay’s encouragement, Mo bought it and renamed it Mo’s Bagels & Deli. With his reputation for delicious quality food, bagels and bakery items, Mo’s popularity grew. Mo credits the quality of his food to the fact that every menu item or bakery treat is made from scratch…. even the corned beef, roast beef, turkey and brisket. “Nothing at Mo’s is processed or pre-packaged,” he says. “Our kitchen and bakery are going full blast from early morning to late evening.” Mo also credits Paul Kruss, his partner and dear friend of 19 years, as well as his fabulous staff, many of whom have been with him for more than 30 years. ”The loyalty of my team is amazing,” says Mo. ”Between us, there is a partnership mentality in making Mo’s a success” He particularly credits Jean Miller, whom he considers a ‘brother’, Ernzier Previl (known as Mr. P) and Victor St. Pierre (known as Mr. Johnny), all specialists in deli preparation. They have all been with Mo since Pumpernik’s. St. Pierre has been with Mo for almost 37 years. “At that time, I worked for him,” says Mo. “He taught me everything in the kitchen from salads to slicing, and how to prepare good food. He was my teacher then, and is my colleague today.” In 2020, Sage Deli on Hallandale Beach Boulevard closed and RK, owners of the shopping center, approached Mo and Paul to take over the location. The partners believed it could ‘happen’ in Hallandale and Paul felt it could be ‘another home run for Mo’s.” Having been a great help from May to December last year, Mo’s 18-year-old son Amir, currently a student at FIU, was also encouraging, since he plans to work and learn the business with his dad as his mentor. Sage had a 47-year history in the area with many devoted customers, so Mo decided to hire former Sage cooks, employees, and especially Enel Mojean, the renowned bagel maker, who has been crafting specialty bagels for more than 35 years. Keeping a younger market in mind, Mo did a total renovation on the interior in a New York style industrial-chic motif, with a floorplan that allowed for an occupancy of 90 and plenty of outdoor seating. The large brick ovens in Mo’s Hallandale have been rebuilt and the deli steamers behind the counter have been enlarged. Mo added a refrigerated ‘Grab-n-Go’ case and keeps it stocked with fresh bagel sandwiches, cream cheese and Dr. Brown sodas. The menu in Hallandale is the same as the one in Aventura, including awesome deli sandwiches and salads. Like Aventura, the deli counter and bakery are a sight to savor. Eat-in or takeout service are equally special, and delivery is available through Uber, Door Dash and most other services. Looking to the future, Mo says that along with his long-time partner and advisor Paul, he hopes to open other locations. “Today, a great deli with the special staff it requires is more difficult to put together from scratch,” he says, “I’m thinking of smaller operations that focus on presenting great food, Kosher-style with a more limited menu, to attract a younger market that remembers how their “Bubby” used to cook. Through the years, Mo has watched changing trends, The bottom line of success in the restaurant business, according to Mo, is to give customers great tasting quality food in a location where they feel at home. That’s why in this part of South Florida, you will frequently hear them say “Meet me at Mo’s.” Mo’s Bagel & Deli 2780 NE 187th Street Aventura, Fl 33160 305-936-8555 Mo’s Bagel & Deli 800 E. • Unexpected Hotel Travel Trends for 2023

Unexpected Hotel Travel Trends for 2023 Family Features April 6, 2023 Share Following the COVID-19 Lockdown, outdoor and drivable destinations were in high demand for domestic travelers. As the country has reopened, Americans embraced the idea of getting back to normal and began traveling much as they did prior to the Pandemic. However, travel trends for 2023 suggest there is no normal when it comes to travel planning. Instead, individual interests are driving decisions about where to go and what to do. "We see a detailed and robust picture of travel into 2023," Expedia Brands President Jon Gieselman said. "We're seeing a surge in trips to culture capitals, a new wave of interest in wellness retreats and a spike in demand for outdoor destinations beyond just beaches and mountains. It's not a new normal so much as people branching out to unexpected trends in what we're calling the 'no normal.'" A close look at these trends suggests there is no "one-size-fits-all" approach to travel in 2023. Insights sourced from the company's first-party data, and from custom research of thousands of travelers and industry professionals across 17 countries, show value, alternative wellness options and hotels that cater to evolving traveler needs are heavily influencing travel choices. Consider these conclusions from the experts at: https://www.hotels.com/ 3-Star Superstars Travelers are seeking smarter ways to see the world without compromising on comfort or cool factor. In the U.S., nearly one-third (32%) of travelers are more concerned with value for money than ever before with data showing interest is up more than 20% globally in three-star hotels. In 2023, 40% of U.S. travelers plan to stay in 1-3-star hotels, and 34% plan to book a vacation with added value inclusions, such as free parking or breakfast. Showing a shift in mindset from the Post-Pandemic bucket-list mentality and moving toward a more spontaneous approach, one-third of travelers would rather go on more trips in three-star properties than splurge on one big luxury getaway. New Wave Wellness According to the survey, more than half (53%) of Americans are seeking wellness breaks but cite boredom with traditional retreats and want to experience something more exciting in 2023. Millennials are the top drivers of this as 60% of 25-34-year-olds are seeking alternative wellness getaways. Most travelers want to explore new offerings in the U.S. However, Gen Z has a different view and would prefer to book an adventure to Norway, Turkey, Switzerland, Iceland or Sri Lanka. To capture this awakened market, some hotels are offering advanced rejuvenation programs and hands-on activities that encourage travelers to get up close and personal with nature. Sylvotherapy (forest bathing) and fruit harvesting are popular alternatives to cooking courses, sport holidays and meditation sessions. Hot Hotel Openings Around the World Hotels that cater to evolving traveler needs are opening around the world. These properties offer far more than a place to sleep with destination restaurants, coworking spaces and beautiful interiors. From an art-filled social hub in London to unbridled luxury in Rome, these are some hotels to have on your radar for the year ahead: • La Palma, Capri, Italy • 100 Princes Street, Edinburgh, United Kingdom • Ikos Odisia, Corfu, Greece • Celestial Suites, Kefalonia, Greece • 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay, Princeville, Kauai • Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo, Tamarindo, Mexico • Alila Kothaifaru Maldives, Maldives, Indian Ocean • Six Senses, Rome, Italy • Atlantis The Royal, Dubai, United Arab Emirates • art'otel London Battersea Power Station, London, Great Britain Find more inspiration to take advantage of upcoming trends at: https://www.hotels.com/ < Previous News Next News >

  • Think Before You Act | sun-times

Think Before You Act By Bryan Golden Jun 25, 2026 Acting Without First Thinking Is Too Common. It Is Called Reacting. It Leads To Unintended Negative Consequences. Problems Are Needlessly Created Or Exacerbated. In This State, You Are Driven By Emotion Rather Than Logic. Anger, Jealousy, Bitterness, Hurt, Fear, And Distrust Are Some Of The Feelings Which Bypass Rational Thought. Thinking after acting makes as much sense as a carpenter who cuts first and then measures. Once cut, a board cannot be made longer. Actions, once taken, can't be undone. A skilled carpenter measures carefully before cutting. Being prudent means thinking before acting. Thinking before acting is responding. This is where your behavior is well thought out and planned. Just because someone else acts does not compel you to react. Thinking puts reason before emotion. Without a consciously thought-out response, you revert to a knee jerk reaction. This is your default automatic behavior. What do you say or do when upset, frustrated, or angry? It's common to become trapped in the same patterns of reactive behavior. Other people will pick up on this and use it to manipulate you. Since emotions cloud your ability for clear thinking, take time to calm down whenever you are upset. Acting in haste bypasses the thinking stage. Rarely is there a pressing need to act immediately. More time is on your side than you realize. Once you are calm, you are in a position to begin assessing your situation. Start by answering a few questions. What happened? Does it really matter? Do you need to respond at all? What are you trying to accomplish? The objective answers stimulate your thinking process. Not only do you want to formulate an appropriate strategy for your response, you also need to keep things in perspective. "Don't sweat the small stuff," should always be kept in mind. Many circumstances, which at first seem upsetting, are insignificant when compared to the big picture of your life. These situations typically require little or no action. You can just let them go. When action is necessary, keep your objective in mind. Know what it is you are looking to accomplish. Consider all of the options available to you. Identify the pros and cons for each option. Objectivity is essential. It may be helpful bouncing your thoughts off a neutral person who you trust. Before deciding on your appropriate response, make sure you gather all of the facts directly from the source. Using second or third hand information as a basis for your decisions is a faulty strategy which leads to erroneous conclusions. Realizing a short-term gain at a long-term expense is self-defeating. Take care not to burn bridges if possible. You never know what circumstances and people you will encounter in the future. Well thought out action is more likely to solve problems and preserve relationships than an emotionally fueled reaction. Actions have consequences. Think things through from different perspectives. What impact will your actions have on the various people and situations involved? Are you acting in your best interest or is there some desire for retribution? Your actions should improve your circumstances, not make them worse. Before deciding on a particular course of action, run the different options through "what if scenarios." This approach forces you to consider all of the various cause and effect relationships. You want to anticipate what impact your action will have so you are not caught by surprise. How will other people react? What action will they take? What are the benefits and liabilities to you? A well thought out response gives you the best chance of taking appropriate action which yields the desired results. Use these suggestions to help you think before you act. • Inspired by the Love of a True Leader

Inspired by the Love of a True Leader By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil June 22, 2023 Share Thursday, the 3rd of Tamuz, marks the 29th Hilula of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Known affectionately and simply as The Rebbe, he was probably the most influential Rabbi in history. With his Shluchim emissaries dispatched to every corner of the world, his impact is felt everywhere you turn. After the decimation of the Holocaust, the Rebbe breathed new life and vitality into the Jewish people, urging them (and demonstrating by example) to celebrate Judaism and live life optimistically, to ‘reclaim’ countless individuals and communities to living a Jewish way of life, and to feel personal responsibility for all others everywhere. In so doing, the Rebbe altered the much-prophesied demise of Judaism, forever shifting the course of history and transforming the landscape of Jewish life. The Rebbe took breathtaking responsibility for the material and spiritual welfare of Jews in the Soviet Union (including masterminding the exodus of thousands), Morocco, Iran, and more, while reaching out to Jews in Curacao, Japan, and Alaska... Israel’s leaders turned to the Rebbe for counsel on public health policies; military strategy; economy; relations with the U.S., Egypt, South Africa, Tunisia and more; and, above all, its educational system. Growing up in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, just a few short streets away from the Rebbe, I was fortunate to see the Rebbe all the time. I prayed with him in his Shul, sang by his Farbrengens, stood at his public gatherings and rallies, and watched every glimpse I could. As a child, I would look around at the thousands of people that would constantly come from all over the world to seek his counsel, hear his talks, or just to see his holy face; and I remember thinking how privileged I was to live right there. Every Sunday for hours,The Rebbe would stand, giving out dollars and blessings to thousands of people from all walks of life. He gave the dollar to be given to a charity of choice. People would of course exchange that dollar for one of their own to give to charity, and keep the dollar they got from the Rebbe’s hand as a sign of blessing. The Rebbe was remarkably accessible and counseled countless individuals from a wide array of backgrounds, including statesmen and artists as diverse as Ronald Reagan, Robert F. Kennedy, Yitzchak Rabin, Menachem Begin, Elie Wiesel, and Bob Dylan, as well as countless “nameless” individuals who were each showered with his individual attention and love. He spoke out about and was active in large public issues like public school education, charity for employees’ distribution, large families, moral education, the energy crisis, a universal moral code for all, creating and bolstering the Food Stamp/WIC System for America’s underprivileged, the responsibility of government, and much more. He believed and taught that the age-old ideals and text of Torah is as real and relevant today as it was at Sinai, over 3,000 years ago. Today, thank G-d, the Rebbe’s teachings and ideals have already become ingrained in our society and inspire millions of Jews and non-Jews. More people than ever are learning his teachings and acting on his wishes of spreading Judaism to Jews, and moral ethics to all people. People of all walks of life flock to his Shul as well as his resting place to pray to G‑d for blessing, guidance and inspiration. In 2013, on the night preceding his election to the Senate, Democratic candidate Cory Booker, an African-American Christian, went to pray at the Rebbe’s Ohel. In 2016, preceding his election, President Trump sent his family to pray at the Ohel on his behalf. Go there any day, any time, and you will see people from all walks of life praying to G-d at that holy site. The Rebbe was a wide-ranging Torah personality whose vast knowledge spanned the entire spectrum of the Torah. His teachings include ideas in Jewish philosophy and theology, commentary on biblical, talmudical and kabbalistic texts, perspectives on world events, and moral and practical directives. At Chabad Chayil we have a group study of The Rebbe’s teachings each Saturday right after Kiddush lunch, which all are welcome to join and thoroughly enjoy. Although the Rebbe was treated as royalty by all who met him, he personally lived modestly and even frugally. While presiding over a vast world empire of institutions and activity, his own Synagogue was simple and in need of a face lift. As a child I always felt bad how simple his synagogue was, and made a promise to myself that when I can one day afford it, I would rebuild his synagogue in the most beautiful way. Over the next few weeks, thousands of communities worldwide will be marking this holy day with special events. I urge you to contact your local synagogue or Chabad to find out what they have planned, but more importantly to see what extra good deed you can do, to perpetuate the Rebbe’s legacy and make the world a better place. You’re of course invited to join us at The Family Shul for a Special Shabbat Dinner & Lunch honoring the Rebbe, which you can RSVP for at: (305) 770-1919. Reach out via: www.ChabadChayil.org/Contact and we’ll be in touch. • The AI Layoff Scapegoat: What's Really Driving The Job Loss Wave | sun-times

The AI Layoff Scapegoat: What's Really Driving The Job Loss Wave South Florida Sun Times Apr 30, 2026 Federal Reserve Data Shows Just 18% Of U.S. Firms Have Adopted AI. In The Latest Earnings Cycle, Only About One In Four S&P 500 Companies Reported Measurable AI Impact. Yet References To AI Driven Efficiency And Restructuring Are Accelerating. At the same time, hiring is slowing across white collar sectors, contract work is rising, and companies are quietly reducing full time roles despite strong headline jobs data. For businesses and professionals alike, this is the disconnect defining the current environment. Former Deutsche Bank Executive and Venture Capital Partner Chitra Nawbatt says AI is not driving most layoffs. It is being used to explain them. “AI is not replacing most jobs today. It is becoming the language companies use to justify decisions they were already planning to make.” Nawbatt says the impact extends beyond corporate strategy and is now reshaping how professionals experience the workforce. “People are being asked to deliver more with less, adapt faster, and compete at a higher level, even as opportunities become less predictable. That gap is where the real pressure is coming from.” Nawbatt can break down, in clear terms relevant to both business operators and the workforce: • Why AI driven layoffs are often narrative driven rather than technology driven • Why hiring is slowing even as economic headlines remain positive • How companies are increasing output expectations while reducing headcount • Why more professionals are being pushed into contract and project-based roles • How to tell whether a business or career move is based on real demand or market narrative • What both leaders and employees should focus on to stay competitive in a mixed signal economy Nawbatt, Author of The CodeBreaker Mindset, works with organizations from startups to Fortune 500 companies on AI, markets, and strategy. She advises both business leaders and professionals to focus on the incentives behind decisions, not the narratives surrounding them. She is available for immediate interviews and commentary to help audiences understand what is actually driving both business decisions and career outcomes right now.
