SFSO Will Be Joined By Vocal Soloists Katherine Henly (Soprano), Maggie Reneé (Mezzo-Soprano), Christopher W. Waite (Tenor), Neil Nelson (Bass-Baritone) And The South Florida Symphony Chorus. Enjoy A Pre-Concert Chat With Dr. Alan Mason 30 Minutes Before The Concerts, Featuring In-Depth Conversation And Insights About The Works And Composer. Each season, orchestras the world over delight in performing one of classical music’s most well-known and uplifting masterworks. Jonathan Kandell of Smithsonian magazine writes, “A musical rite of the holiday season, the Baroque-era oratorio still awes listeners 250 years after the composer’s death.” In 1789, Mozart posthumously paid Handel the supreme compliment of reorchestrating Messiah but even Mozart confessed himself to be humble in the face of Handel's genius describing his orchestrations: "When he chooses, he strikes like a thunderbolt." In 1823, Beethoven proclaimed Handel to be the ‘greatest’ composer that ever lived. “South Florida Symphony Orchestra is delighted to reprise its annual Messiah and Holiday Pops performances,” said Jacqueline Lorber, President and CEO of South Florida Symphony Orchestra. “Music is the universal language that unites us all. Now, more than ever, we are pleased to lift our voices in song and share the timeless holiday spirit of joy and peace with audiences of all ages. Hallelujah!” SFSO’s 2025 holiday program will open with a selection of Holiday Pops festive favorites including “You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” “The Prayer” (as made popular by Andrea Bocelli), “You Make It Feel Like Christmas” (as made popular by Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani), “Christmas Canon” (made popular by Trans-Siberian Orchestra) and “Festive Sounds of Hanukkah.” Audiences are also invited to sing along to a special medley of cherished classics - "Jingle, Bells," "Silent Night," "Joy to the World" and more. Per tradition, SFSO will close the joyous evening with Part I of Handel’s Messiah culminating with the iconic “Hallelujah” chorus as sung by the South Florida Symphony Chorus, made-up of seasoned chorale singers and community talent, directed by Dr. Giselle Elgarresta Rios. Rios and Maestra Alfonso collaborated to create the South Florida Symphony Chorus in 2019, which made its debut at the Beethoven 250th celebration in February of 2020. SFSO’s 28th Season of “Juxtapositions” explores beauty in contrasts, where the bold and the sublime intersect, and timeless masterpieces share the stage with today’s most compelling and celebrated musical voices. From Mozart’s vivacious “Haffner” symphony to the sun-drenched skies of Mendelssohn’s “Italian” and the sweeping emotion of Sibelius’ Violin Concerto — performances burst with color and power. Beethoven’s luminous Piano Concerto No. 4 and Dvorak’s Bohemian Eighth deepen the journey, while Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol whirls with Spanish flair. SFSO is also proud to present upcoming orchestra firsts by GRAMMY-nominated composers, including the Florida premiere of Had to Be by Haitian American Nathalie Joachim, featuring breakout cellist Seth Parker Woods, and Carlos Simon’s Four Black American Dances. Five Masterworks concerts will be held at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale from November 2025 through April 2026. Three Masterworks concerts will be held at New World Center in Miami Beach and at Tennessee Williams Theatre in Key West from January through March 2026. From sold-out masterworks performances to accompanying today’s musicians such as Natalie Merchant and performing modern musical scores including Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas and Back to the Future, featuring the iconic films screened live with audio and musical accompaniment, South Florida’s largest symphonic orchestra is continuing its journey of excellence inspiring audiences of all ages and musical genres. Back by popular demand, SFSO will accompany ARRIVAL from Sweden: The Music of ABBA on Thursday, February 26th, 206 at the Broward Center. • Be A Part of The Team: Show Love, Increase Comfort & Spread Joy Throughout The Community

Be A Part of The Team: Show Love, Increase Comfort & Spread Joy Throughout The Community July 28, 2022 Share The use of Animal Therapy to assist people with Special Needs is not a new concept. There is increasing evidence and statistics that show that the Emotional and Psychological benefits of Pet companionship have Physiological counterparts as well. Pets improve not only the intangible “quality of life” but also improve human health. There have been many studies documenting that petting and caring for animals, particularly those with whom a bonded relationship has been established, can reduce Blood Pressure, slow Heart Rate and improve survival rates from Heart Disease. Animal Assisted Therapy is being used in a wide variety of settings to help people with acute and chronic illnesses throughout our community. Animal Assisted Therapy Teams visit patients in almost every Hospital in Broward County, they visit various floors to bring the joy of their pets to those who are ill or recovering in the Hospital. When the program was first established, it served the elderly residents of Nursing Homes in Broward County. Today, the program is well known in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties; they have expanded to help the Abused, Neglected, Physically and Mentally Ill people of all Ages and Genders. The Program includes: Teams that visit over 100 Facilities such as Senior Retirement Homes, Hospitals, Hospice, Mental Health Facilities, Children’s Facilities, Foster Homes and Group Homes along with Broward County Public Schools, Broward County Public Libraries, Broward County Private Schools and Private Libraries. One of the participating Hospitals has several Animal Assisted Therapy Teams that visit their Pediatric Ward and their Pediatric Emergency Units. The AAT Teams visit the patients’ rooms and help to reduce the Stress and Anxiety of the Children. Many times when the Children need to have blood drawn, the dogs are right there beside them so they can pet the dog and have a distraction while their blood is being taken. The interactions between the dogs and the patients are remarkable. Janice Zack, Certified Child Life Specialist says, “We see this time and time again with the patients. Pets reduce stress, lift spirits and promote healing in a comforting way.” The volunteers and companion animals visit their assigned Senior Facility and give those residents and patients an opportunity to pet the animal, socialize with one another and tell loving stories about their beloved animal friends. AAT Visits can be as basic as “meet and greet” or as structured as working on specific goals with individuals under the supervision of a Trained Staff Member. The type of Visit depends on the need of the Facility. Additionally, the AAT teams and their Therapy Animals educate the children in the community on Pet Safety and how to prevent a dog bite, how to properly care for a pet and why it’s so important to Spay and Neuter your pet amongst other topics. It’s critically important to ensure that each child and adult that meets with the Therapy Animals learn how to be safe around animals and then help us to spread the word to others on Pet Safety. Currently, they have over 100 dogs, a few cats and a dwarf horse in our AAT Program. Each Certified Therapy Team receives Specialized Training prior to placement in the Program. The Volunteer/Animal Team must take a series of Classes, including Specialized Training Classes, in order to be considered for Certification in this Elite Program. The Animal Assisted Therapy Program (AAT) is a rewarding experience for you and your companion animal, so why not become a part of this caring Team? How to Become an Animal Assisted Therapy Team If you would like to spread some love and comfort throughout the community and become a part of the Animal Assisted Therapy Team and to register for Program Orientation (without your animal), contact the Volunteer Department at: (954) 266-6814. This Class will teach you all about our Animal Assisted Therapy Program and what skill requirements both you and your animal must possess in order to be considered for our Program. If further Training is not required, you will be scheduled for your Evaluation. The meeting, inclusive of the evaluation, will take approximately 1.5 hours. Evaluations are conducted at various locations in Broward County. Volunteers will need to provide a copy of their animal’s updated Veterinarian Records showing that all Vaccinations were administered at the time of the Evaluation. If you have multiple pets, the requirement is one pet per handler. You may have multiple pets Evaluated and if they pass you will be required to only bring one pet per visit and you may rotate your pets as necessary. If you are interested in joining the Animal Assisted Therapy Program, please contact the Humane Society directly at: (954) 266-6814. • Jewish Foundation For The Righteous - Helps Righteous Gentile Rescuers Celebrate Holidays With Over In Awards | sun-times

Jewish Foundation For The Righteous - Helps Righteous Gentile Rescuers Celebrate Holidays With Over In Awards Jewish Connection News Dec 18, 2025 Amid The Ongoing Holiday Season, The Jewish Foundation For The Righteous (JFR) Is Sending $380,000 To Righteous Gentile Rescuers Of Jews During The Holocaust Living In 10 Different Countries –The Largest One-Time Seasonal Award In The Foundation’s History. The JFR provides financial stipends for aged and needy Righteous Gentiles, helping to repay a debt of gratitude on behalf of the Jewish people for their heroism. Since its founding, the foundation has provided more than $46 Million to an estimated 3,600 rescuers in more than 34 countries. As the years pass from the Holocaust, the number of living rescuers has dwindled. The remaining Righteous Gentiles who are receiving this year’s holiday awards live in Australia, Belarus, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden and Ukraine. This year’s disbursements include $4,000 to each of the rescuers along with their usual $2,000 award for the September to December period. The awards mark the largest individual holiday disbursement per rescuer that the JFR has sent in its 30-year history. The JFR disburses its ongoing awards to rescuers three times annually, the third and final in December ahead of the holidays. The larger sum distributed in this year’s awards will allow each of the righteous to celebrate the holidays with dignity despite the increased costs of groceries, medications and other staples. “Each of these Righteous Gentiles is a hero who confronted their mortality to save their Jewish neighbors from Nazi persecution during the Holocaust,” said JFR Executive Vice President Stanlee Stahl. “As they continue to age and many face hardship and isolation, we hope that this special award allows them to make this holiday season memorable for them and their families while the ongoing financial support we provide helps them to pay for their critical needs, including food, medicine, and pay the heating bills. Our support is just one of the many ways we can repay our boundless gratitude for all that they did in risking their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust.” The JFR continues its work of providing monthly financial assistance to aged and needy Righteous Gentiles living in 10 countries. Since its founding, the JFR has provided more than $46 Million to aged and needy rescuers. Its Holocaust teacher education program has become a standard for teaching the history of the Holocaust and educating teachers and students about the significance of the Righteous as moral and ethical exemplars. • Mentors Are Often The Unsung Heroes Of A Successful Career

Mentors Are Often The Unsung Heroes Of A Successful Career July 4, 2024 Share Whether she was building resilience from mentors who were unfair or downright cruel, or gaining confidence from mentors who were supportive and helpful, R. Barbara Gitenstein was honing the skills that would one day propel her to the highest level of academia. “Mentors make all the difference in an individual’s success in the world,” Gitenstein said. “I was blessed with extraordinary mentors, who helped me navigate the difficulties of being the singular voice in a room.” Being a female administrator was relatively rare when Gitenstein became the first woman and first Jewish President of The College of New Jersey in 1999, a position she held until 2018. Now a consultant for institutions of higher education, Gitenstein chronicles her path to the presidency and acknowledges the impact that people, places and perceptions had on her personal and professional identities in her new book, Experience Is the Angled Road: Memoir of an Academic. She shares valuable lessons she learned across more than four decades in academia — plus personal and historical obstacles she overcame — and pays homage to extraordinary mentors for helping her navigate challenges. “My story captures the shock and the humor as I, almost always, was the only ‘whatever’ in the room — woman, Jew, liberal,” Gitenstein said. Calling her childhood “challenging and strange,” she describes how, as a young girl, she learned that being different was all that there was. Born and raised in Florala, Alabama, after her parents headed south from New York City, Gitenstein’s “otherness” went beyond being Jewish and a Yankee. Her intellectual passions and love of music were considered peculiar by most of her acquaintances. Plus, she grew up with a particularly embarrassing chronic disease. All of these things, she said, taught her to approach the periphery as a position of power. “I found that embracing the privilege of being an outsider results in great vision and ultimately can be a great foundation for strength,” she said. That combination of second sight and resilience helped guide her as she confronted sexism, Antisemitism, regional animus, and the distrust of expertise in her professional and personal life. Gitenstein reveals her difficulties and disappointments with refreshing candor, vulnerability and doses of dry wit, resulting in a story that is uplifting, tender and an exemplar of intersectionality, leadership and survival. Thomas Kean, Former Governor of New Jersey, calls Gitenstein’s memoir, “a remarkably readable book about the people surrounding a young Jewish girl growing up in the Deep South. … This is an unflinchingly courageous story of love, exasperation, argument, and forgiveness.” “Dr. Gitenstein has provided us with a compelling glimpse into the deeply personal, sometimes painful life of an accomplished public person. She shares with us a heartwarming love story along with her struggle for emancipation from a cocoon of external expectations to become one of higher education’s most respected college presidents. Vulnerable, candid and inspiring, Gitenstein vividly portrays her struggle for emancipation from a cocoon of external expectations as a Jewish woman coming of age in Florala, Alabama, with dynamic prose and storytelling that will keep you turning the page. The office features a low stimulation room for pediatric patients with sensory sensitivities, such as individuals on the Autism Spectrum. Feeding therapy is available for infants and toddlers who have trouble swallowing and patients can learn how to feed themselves using adaptive utensils. In addition to health care services, the Family Health Center will also host workshops on resume writing, interviewing skills labs, personal finance and budgeting to assist adults with gaining employment and self-sufficiency. “The Holy Cross Health Family Health Center will provide a warm, welcoming atmosphere,” Saiswick added. “Our focus is to meet the present and future healthcare needs of our community while being at the forefront of innovation.” The Family Health Center is initially open Monday to Friday during normal business hours but will eventually expand to include some evenings and weekend hours.
