- Underwater Adventure Awaits: New Artificial Reef Coming to Hollywood Beach
Underwater Adventure Awaits: New Artificial Reef Coming to Hollywood Beach March 31, 2022 Share Those who experience the excitement of the underwater world, with its colorful fish and beautiful coral formations, know the thrill of seeing amazing marine life or discovering a unique formation. Divers to Hollywood Beach boast of the incredible biodiversity found just beyond the sandy shores. The word is out in the dive community on the 1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project that is heading to Hollywood Beach this Spring. The Ocean Rescue Alliance (ORA), a Marine Conservation and Restoration Non-Profit Organization that specializes in eco-art artificial reef structures that vary by biological purpose. Some structures create fish habitats or enable the restoration of oysters, mangroves and corals. Some protect coastlines and others become dive destinations. The goal of the Alliance’s “1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project” is to create Unique Art Themed Reefs in South Florida, including off of Hollywood Beach. Their very first Reef Structure is scheduled for deployment in 40 feet of water in the Central Beach area. This first site will be accessible only by boat, however future near shore snorkel sites are planned for easier access by all. ORA Artificial Reef Structures are made of eco-friendly materials that encourage natural Coral and benthic growth to create micro and macro habitats. Each structure weighs anywhere from 2,000 to 6,000 pounds to ensure that they stay in place, even through a Hurricane. The ORA Team uses a large barge to set it in place where it is expected to stay for 50 years or more. Approximately $300,000 is already invested to construct the Artificial Reef Structure and install it in the Ocean, as well as to create and support Educational Programming, on-going Reef Restoration and new Research Initiatives. Unlike most Artificial Reef Structures, The ORA’s Reefs range from high to low profile to mimic those found in the natural world. The Reef Structures include shelves and spaces that a variety of sizes and Species of Marine Life can use during the different stages of their life. The more artistic structures will also offer divers and snorkelers a destination to visit and explore. Each structure will also be “seeded” with coral fragments to help encourage coral growth. In addition to diving, the Reef Project will be an opportunity for the Public to learn about the importance of Conservation and Restoration Efforts. Programs are planned to include: Research, Education, Citizen Science, Dive/Beach Clean-Ups, Monitoring and more. Eco-Tourism opportunities are also planned and may include visits to the Reef and the ability to “outplant” Corals at the site. Prior to the Reef Structure being deployed off of Hollywood Beach, the Public will have an opportunity for an up close viewing. Visit the City’s Web-Site at: www.HollywoodFL.org for information on where to view the new structure. Once deployed, Reef Coordinates can be found on the Ocean Rescue Alliance’s Web-Site at: www.oceanrescuealliance.org . Dive Hollywood’s Reefs Did you know that….the Florida Reef Tract stretches from the Dry Tortugas all the way to the St. Lucie Inlet for nearly 360 linear miles making it the fifth largest Coral Reef Ecosystem in the World? But what exactly are Coral Reef Ecosystems and why should you check them out? Coral Reefs are large Underwater Ecosystems that have been formed over hundreds of years by Invertebrates called Coral Polyps! These Coral Polyps come in all shapes, colors and sizes but they join in colonies to form the Iconic Reefs you might recognize; they are living animals but when they pass away their exoskeletons form Stony Limestone support for the Coral formations which are how they grow over centuries! They are often called the “Rainforests Of The Sea” because although they only occupy 1% of the Ocean Floor, they are a crucial habitat for about 25% of all Ocean Species! Coral Reefs are home to thousands of different Plants and Animal Species! To learn more about our Coral Reefs, Visit the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Informational Page At: www.noaa.gov . The Florida Reef Tract is the only Coral Reef Ecosystem in the Continental United States and is divided into the Inner Reef, which is 20-30 feet deep, the Middle Reef, which is 40-60 feet deep and the Outer Reef, which is 50-100 feet deep! When diving in our Reefs, you can expect to see colorful Parrotfish, Angelfish, Barracuda, Nurse Sharks, Stingrays, Delicate Corals, Turtles and more! However, Coral Reefs are Sensitive Ecosystems that are sadly being threatened by a variety of factors like: Climate Change, Coral Bleaching, Overfishing, Boat Anchoring, etc. Visit NOAA's Coral Reef Ecosystem to learn more about the dangers that our Reefs are facing and what you can do to help! One way that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is getting involved and protecting our Oceans and everything that lives in them is by administering a State-Wide Artificial Reef Program that provides Financial and Technical Assistance to Local Coastal Governments, Non-profit Corporations and State Universities to construct, monitor and assess the Artificial Reefs. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has an Interactive Map where you can view all of the Artificial Reefs along Hollywood’s Coast! - Breathe Better With Asthma, Wherever You Are
Breathe Better With Asthma, Wherever You Are By Family Features July 18, 2024 Share If you have Asthma, you know that symptoms can come on quickly, then worsen. The things that make them do that are called triggers. An important part of managing Asthma is knowing your triggers at home, work, school or while you're outdoors. A health care provider can help you figure that out, then you can take steps to avoid those triggers and breathe easier. At Home Because Asthma is usually due to Allergies, triggers are often Allergens, or things that cause allergic reactions. Allergens such as Pet Dander, Dust Mites, Pests and Smoke can make Asthma Symptoms worse in some people, and for others, even trigger an Asthma Attack. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) suggests that it may be helpful to combine a few different strategies to help reduce exposure to triggers. People sensitive to dust can clean with a High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filtration Vacuum and use mattress and pillow covers that prevent exposure to Dust Mites. If you're sensitive to pests like Cockroaches and Rodents, consider Integrated Pest Management, which involves removing and controlling pests through methods such as traps or poison. Avoiding Tobacco Smoke, including Secondhand Smoke, can be especially helpful for some people with Asthma. At School Asthma is one of the leading reasons children miss school. At school, kids may be exposed to Dust Mites, Pests and Mold, which may be Asthma Triggers for some children. Because children spend lots of time at school, it can be helpful for teachers, school nurses or coaches to know what to do if your child's symptoms flare up. Team up with a health care provider to develop an Asthma action plan and share it with trusted adults at your child's school. At Work The workplace can have hundreds of potential triggers, like Chlorine-Based Cleaning Products, Bleaches, Hair Dyes and Metal Dust. Repeated exposures in the workplace can also lead to new triggers. Report new or worsening symptoms that occur at work to your health care provider and your workplace supervisor. Outdoors Everyday weather like cold, dry air can set off breathing problems. Air pollution can affect Asthma, too. It may be helpful to avoid some of the worst pollution by adjusting when and where you exercise. Try to avoid exercising near busy roads or industrial areas. Visit: http://airnow.gov to check your local air quality so you can plan to avoid outdoor activities when pollution is highest. Managing your triggers is just one part of keeping your Asthma under control. Work with a Health Care Provider to develop an Asthma Treatment Plan that includes taking medicines as prescribed and keeping track of your symptoms and where you are when they occur. That way, you can know what's making your Asthma worse or better. To learn more about Asthma, visit NHLBI's Learn More Breathe Better(r) program at: http://nhlbi.nih.gov/BreatheBetter. < Previous News Next News >

Scrape down sides of bowl, add sugar and beat on medium speed until pale and fluffy, 3-5 minutes. Add egg, milk and vanilla extract; beat until combined. - Can American Families Still Afford The Christmas They Grew Up With? | sun-times
Can American Families Still Afford The Christmas They Grew Up With? By Sam Bourgi Dec 25, 2025 The Short Answer Is No, I Don’t Believe Families Can Afford Christmases From Their Childhood. And My Answer Is Not Based On Nostalgia Or Whether You Even Should Try To Afford It, But On The Rising Costs Of Things That Define Christmas For Us. Each year, Americans spend more and more on gifts, on food, and on this holiday in general. And I think it is crazy, how can 50% of people plan to spend more than $150 on decorations alone? While it may sound harsh, this makes me think that most people are either wealthier than portrayed or very poor at planning their budgets and managing expectations. Yet I agree that each household views Christmas in different ways. For some, it is solely a tradition, while for others, it is only a time for gift-giving. Regardless, prices are increasing, and by being surrounded by consumerist culture, most of us give in to the discounts and maybe buy things that are not necessary. However, your spending should reflect your values, especially when talking about the increased cost of this celebration. To understand the dramatic shift in prices, let's look at the prices we grew up with. For 42 years, PNC Bank has calculated the prices of the 12 gifts from the classic song, "The Twelve Days of Christmas." The Christmas Price Index in the U.S. stood at over $51,400 in 2025. But did you know how much it was in 1984? A few drops over $20,000. Actually, according to the website, counting each repetition of the song, it would amount to 364 presents or over $218,000 this year. A dollar today buys only 46% of what it could buy back then. In 1995, $1 had the same purchasing power as approximately $2.13 today. It experienced an average inflation rate of 2.55% annually from 1995 to the present, resulting in a total price increase of 112.58%. Here is another example of how crazy the cost of everything has grown. Remember the movie Home Alone? How many of you have already watched it this year, or maybe are planning to during Christmas? As the celebrations approach unstoppably, most of us are hit with expenses that reach sky-high numbers. However, in the movie, Christmas appears so easy, manageable, and affordable. However, it is far from the truth today, and what may have looked like a celebration every family could afford is now out of reach. In the movies, the McCallister family has five children. Investors Observer has reported that when you compare basic child-rearing costs with average family income, many American families would be tens of thousands of dollars short if they wanted to raise five children. And that excludes birthdays, toys, and all the maybe not-so-necessary things to buy, but those that make the child’s life better. In my opinion, no, not many families can afford what they grew up with. And while some could have compared themselves to the McCallisters back in 1990, today you should be part of the exclusive 1%. Even the house the McCallisters currently live in is worth over $5 Million, with a more than 200% increase in the last 10 years. This does not indicate a shift in values, nor does it suggest that families should consider this a failure, rather, it highlights the economic shift we are now facing.
