  • Elections Are 47 Days Away: Hallandale Beach Will Have Elections For Commission Seats 1 And 2 And Charter Amendments

Elections Are 47 Days Away: Hallandale Beach Will Have Elections For Commission Seats 1 And 2 And Charter Amendments By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper September 22, 2022 Share Today marks 47 days until Election Day! Here in Hallandale Beach, we have Elections for Commission Seats 1 and 2 and for Charter Amendments. A committee of appointed citizens proposed the Charter Amendments. The Commission approved and supported them with a 5-0 Vote to be placed on the Ballot. Voters should support all these Amendments that improve the governance and operations of our City. I typically do not get very political in these articles, but Voters really need to understand what is at stake in our City this Election Year. I have already heard many Voters are being misled. Hallandale Beach now has a system of seats. The Commission seats are 1 – 4 and the Mayor's Seat. This year two seats are on the Ballot are: Seat 1 and 2. Vice Mayor Mike Butler is running for Re-Election in Seat 1. That is not the news. The alarming news is that Keith London is running against him. I will not call it shocking even though Mike was at one time his friend and Former Running Mate. This is the type of arrogant behavior that is typical to Keith. His past cruel behavior against colleagues, business owners and employees may not be known to all new residents. To those of us who know the real truth, there is a reason that London lost his appointed Mayor’s Seat. He lost because residents had enough! I am writing about this because we all need to not forget this horrific chapter in our City’s History. This is a call to action from Vice Mayor Mike Butler, Commission Michelle Lazarow, Commissioner Anabelle Lima-Taub and myself. It is hard to imagine that this is taking place but after years of disinformation about corruption, personal attacks against those that called him out or those burned by his reckless actions our City Commission is united in the message about the news. We are all formally and publicly denouncing his attempt to once again fleece our City and misinform Voters. It was an agonizing time for many. The residents united to Vote him out and we all need to unite once more for the wellbeing of our now vibrant Community! Obviously, I was not on the dais for a year and half and was finally vindicated. Sadly, during that period, the arrogant power-hungry London was even worse. His attacks on Commissioner Anabelle Lima-Taub were despicable. Hallandale Beach made national headlines over anal bleaching. We were slammed with costly Lawsuits that are still hanging over the heads of our taxpayers. One with a price of $5 Million Dollars. Over the past three years, our City has been moving forward without the shenanigans of years past. We have worked collectively to overcome the bad headlines. Correct a Budget that was fully mismanaged and in 2018 had the lowest reserves in the history of the City. Now we are all fully united to keep him out and protect our City. We need your help to continue the peace that has been brought to our City by empathic, caring and smart leadership. In other news, it has been brought to my attention that other misinformation is out there regarding our BSO Merger. We all can agree that Public Safety is one of the most important services and duties we perform as Elected Officials. Without Health and Safety, we do not have anything! When the City Commission Voted 3-2 on the Merger, they were put in a box due to a Pension Lawsuit and collective bargaining. It needs to be noted that the two other Unions, The International Union of Police Associations (IUPA), which is the Police, were negotiating going to FRS (Florida Retirement System) and AFSCME (American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees) already went to FRS. This change did save money all around. In my opinion, it should have and could have happened without the BSO. The BSO’s Contract was all Union and did not have to do with staffing even though the public was led to believe it. There was a report of an incident with a female Firefighter going into a house during a kitchen fire on her own. What has been left out of this story is there was another Firefighter and the Chief was on the scene. In Fire Response, there are typically multiple trucks responding. She claimed she was told to go in on her own. This is totally against protocol but after a thorough review it became a point of “she said, he said.” As the Chief said, he was behind her while the other officer was running the hose. This Fire Incident created the push to have three Personnel on a truck. The other incident that has been pointed out from what I can gather, I was not on the dais at the time, was a response to a Heart Attack by a Single Responder. I do not know if the Fire Truck Personnel only had a Certified Driver and one Paramedic. While we do not want any of these types of incidents occurring, they are outliers. There is not one single perfect Department in Broward County and human error is always possible. Even with the BSO Merger, we had a tragic Incident due to BSO Protocols. There was a call for an Asthma Attack that turned tragic due to the fact the response could not go in. Ironically, people are not sharing this story. Since I have been on the dais, I have only heard good comments and accolades for our wonderful First Responders. It was my understanding our City was to work on Certifications. I have heard debates over staffing levels for years. We have three on EMS and three on Fire only because of a SAFER Grant. This had nothing to do with the Merger. I also need to share that in a four-square mile City, we have more coverage than other cities with 3 Fire Stations housing Fire and EMS at the Beach, Main Stations and EMS on Three Islands. We still pay for all other related expenses, trucks, stations, equipment for trucks and life saving apparatuses. The other issue is training. Due to staffing, training hours were interrupted. I am not saying this is not an issue. Training is important. Currently, our Grant is over. We will be losing a position. We will still be in the BSO Contract, while spending $1.2 Million Dollars. If lost, we will go to three on a Fire Truck and two on EMS. I firmly stand with getting out of the contract and stop wasting money on upper management and focus on boots on the ground. Wishing all our friends and neighbors a Blessed Rosh Hashanah! As always, I am available for your questions, concerns and ideas to help make our City a better place. Please feel free to reach out at my office: (954) 457-1318. On my cell/text at: (954) 632-5700. Or E-mail me at: jcooper@cohb.org . < Previous News Next News >

  • Mr. Bubbles & Ruby: Playful & Fun To Add To Your Family

Mr. Bubbles & Ruby: Playful & Fun To Add To Your Family January 18, 2024 Share Mr. Bubbles wants to make memories with you. This exuberant, fun-loving fellow LOVES tennis balls and loves toys that squeak! He can often be seen carrying multiple toys around in his mouth. Mr. Bubbles came from another shelter, so his past is a mystery. If you’re about to throw a ball, he will sit if you ask him to. This two-year-old ball of energy would benefit from having a backyard to run around in and an active family who can tire him out. Are you the family for Mr. Bubbles? Beautiful Ruby sadly lost her home because someone is allergic to her. Her former family described her as being very curious and very playful. She lived with a big dog at home and Ruby was in charge. This long-haired beauty is sweet, loving and will need to be brushed on a regular basis so she is always looking her best. She likes getting petted and is very curious with strangers. Preparing To Adopt If you lease your home, check with your landlord before adopting to be sure you are allowed to have a pet and can afford all required pet deposits. Pets are sometimes returned because of lease restrictions and/or landlord’s disapproval of the pet chosen. This can be an expensive lesson since the adoption fees are non-refundable and being returned to the shelter can be a stressful experience for the animal. Adopting a pet is not a one person decision. Make sure other members of your household are aware you want to add a pet and should meet the pet before you decide to adopt. Also consider: Does anyone have allergies? Are other members of the household, including children, afraid of animals? Are you expecting other members of the household to share in the care of the pet? Another factor to consider is cost. The initial and on-going costs of a new pet can add up. These costs include: Adoption Fees, Food, Grooming, Obedience Training, Pet Supplies, and Licensing. Additional Veterinary Care such as: Diagnostic Testing and Preventative Medications can add up in the future, so make sure to take this all under consideration prior to adopting. These costs can easily be $200-400 or more within the first few weeks of adoption. Other Pets The Humane Society of Broward County recommends that you do not immediately expose your existing pets to a new pet. Consider how you will manage an isolation period and be sure all existing pets are up to date on vaccinations and other routine health care before bringing a new pet home. Facilitating positive pet-to-pet introductions will require some management on your part too. Not all pets are instant friends and may require temporary or intermittent separation to ensure a smooth transition. Some pets are happy to share their home within a week or two, others may take a month or longer to adjust. Our Adoption Staff will be happy to review steps to properly introduce your new pet to your resident pets. Time Commitment All dogs and cats making the transition to a new home will need time to adjust to a new family and may require House Training and Behavior Training to correct Problem Behavior. If you aren’t prepared to invest your time to teach your new pet appropriate behavior and help the animal adjust, you should not consider adopting a pet at this time. Positive Reinforcement-Based Training is recommended for all newly adopted Dogs and Puppies. Please make a lifetime commitment to your pet. Remember that the animal you choose has already been abandoned or unwanted at least once in its life. Dogs and Cats may live 12 to 15 years or more. Your thoughtful consideration, preparation and commitment will help ensure a lifelong placement. Supplies Before bringing your Dog, Cat, or Critter home, make sure you have the supplies to properly care for the newest member of your household. From toys and leashes to treats and litter pans, the adoption centers have a wide variety of merchandise available for purchase. Their knowledgeable staff can help you find the right products for your pet during the Adoption Interview Process. To meet Mr. Bubbles (ID 677198), Ruby (ID 677380) or any other pet, visit: www.humanebroward.com - and fill out the Pre-Adoption Application. Then, stop by the Humane Society of Broward County located at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312 - a block west of I-95. The Adoption Department opens daily at 11:00 a.m. and if you have any questions, call: (954) 989-3977. Extension#: 6. < Previous News Next News >

  • Florida's Top Alternative Christmas Dishes

Florida's Top Alternative Christmas Dishes December 20, 2023 Share Key Lime Butter Basted Turkey Voted Florida's Top Alternative Christmas Dish. America's Christmas table is a vibrant variety of regional flavors, with each state bringing its own culinary traditions to the festive feast. For example, Maine's shores inspire a Hearty Seafood Chowder, Succulent Lobster, and a sweet finish of Blueberry Pie, made from its iconic berries. Meanwhile, in Minnesota, the festive flavors of Scandinavia reign supreme with dishes like: Lutefisk, Lefse, and Swedish Meatballs taking center stage. Yet, America's essence lies in its ever-evolving cultural mix. As our nation's demographics shift, so do our holiday dishes, blending traditional flavors with fresh influences. Consider Oregon: a state where the rich Mexican cultural influence weaves seamlessly into its culinary heritage. Imagine a Christmas dinner in Oregon where the star dish is Hazelnut-Crusted Venison with Molé Poblano! Here's a glimpse into the recipe: Start with Gamey Venison and give it a crunchy exterior using Oregon's Renowned Hazelnuts. This Northwest specialty pairs beautifully with the depth of a Molé Poblano sauce, a tribute to Oregon's Mexican community. The aromatic blend of Chocolate and Chilies in the Molé elevates the Venison, making every bite a celebration of fusion. Recipe website: www.MissWish.com has run a survey of 3,000 foodies to unearth what each state's preferred contemporary Christmas dishes would be, with some tantalizing results. Below are Florida's top 3 choices: #1 Key Lime Butter Basted Turkey: A Florida-twist on the classic Christmas Turkey, basted with Butter infused with Key Lime Juice for a citrusy punch. Butter-Basted Lemon and Key Lime Turkey Serves 10-12 Ingredients • 1 Lemon • 1 Key Lime • 3 Ounces of Softened Butter • 12 Lb. Oven-Ready Turkey, thawed if frozen • 1 Onion • 8 Ounces of Streaky Bacon • Bay Leaves and Thyme Sprigs, to garnish Instructions Grate the Rind from the Citrus Fruits, reserving the Flesh. In a bowl, mix the Butter, the Lemon and the Lime Rinds and season them with the Salt and the Pepper. Spread the Butter over a sheet of foil big enough to cover the area of the Turkey Breast. Cover it with another sheet of foil and press down to make an even layer of Butter and Chill it until it is firm. Preheat the oven to 180°F. Remove the Giblets from the Turkey and wash the Bird inside and out. Dry it well with a kitchen paper towel. Quarter the Lemon and the Lime, peel and halve the Onion. Put these in the cavity of the Bird. Loosen the skin of the Breast by sliding your hands (take off rings first) between the Flesh and the Skin — not a pleasant job, but worth doing. Peel the foil from the Chilled Butter (keep one piece of foil for a later stage) then slide it between the Breast and Skin (it will break up a bit but this is easier than spreading Soft Butter). Smooth the Skin back over the Butter then season the Turkey generously inside and out. Tie the Legs together at the top of the Drumsticks to give the Turkey a neat shape. Weigh the Bird to calculate the cooking time – allow 20 minutes per pound, plus an extra 20 minutes added on. Put the Turkey in a Dry Roasting Pan and loosely cover the Breast with a sheet of Buttered foil. Do not enclose the whole Turkey in foil. Roast the Turkey for the calculated cooking time, basting with the Pan Juices every 30-40 minutes. Half an hour before the end of cooking, remove the foil to crisp the Skin, Baste with the Pan Juices and lay the Bacon in a Lattice shape over the Breast. To test if the Turkey is cooked, pierce the Thigh with a skewer at the thickest part. If the Juices run clear, it’s done; if they are a little pink, give it 15 minutes more, and then test again. Transfer it to a serving platter and cover it tightly with foil; rest it for 15 minutes to make carving it easier. #2 Citrus-Marinated Roast Pork (Lechón) with Mojo Criollo: Florida's substantial Cuban-American population has made Roast Pork a staple. Marinating the Pork in the Orange and the Lime Juices, the Garlic and the Spices, then roasting it until succulent and serving it with the Mojo Criollo Sauce (Garlic-Citrus Sauce) celebrates this influence. Citrus-Marinated Roast Pork (Lechón) Serves 6 Ingredients • 3 Lb. of Boneless Pork Shoulder Roast, see notes • 1/2 Cup of Orange Juice • 1/4 Cup of Lime Juice approximately 1 ½ - 2 Limes • 1/4 Cup of Lemon Juice approximately 1 Lemon • 1 1/2 Teaspoons of dry Oregano • 1 Teaspoon of Ground Cumin • 1 1/2 Teaspoons of Salt • 8 Cloves of Crushed Garlic • 1/2 Onion or 1 Whole if small - sliced • Ground Pepper to taste Instructions Pat dry the Pork Roast and prepare a plastic container or freezer bag, big enough to hold it plus some liquid. Squeeze the juice from the Orange, the Lime and the Lemon. Crush or finely chop the Garlic and thinly slice the Onion. Mix the Juices with the rest of the ingredients: Dry or fresh Oregano, Cumin, Salt, Garlic, Onion and Pepper in the container/bag. Add the Pork into the Marinade and turn or seal the bag and shake it a little to cover it all over. Leave the Pork to marinate overnight in the fridge, ideally turning at least once. When ready to cook it, take the Pork out of the fridge ahead of time - around 30 -60 minutes - to allow it to come to room temperature. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Place the Pork in a roasting dish with the Skin side up, sitting in a little of the Citrus Marinade Juice. Save the rest of the Marinade, including all of the Onions. Baste the Pork with the Juice in the dish after 1-2 hours and continue cooking it. Roast it for 3 hours, or a little more if needed, covering it with the foil if the top gets too brown. You should get an internal temperature of at least 170°F to be able to slice, or 190°F - 200°F to be able to shred when it's ready. While the Pork is cooking, bring the remaining Marinade to a gentle simmer and cook it for around 5 minutes to soften the Onions. Serve this as a sauce over the Pork when serving it. #3 Moqueca (Brazilian Seafood Stew): With a growing Brazilian population, a festive Seafood Stew with Coconut Milk, Peppers, Tomatoes and Dendê Oil brings tropical warmth to the holiday table. Moqueca (Brazilian Seafood Stew) Serves 4 Ingredients - Soup • 1 1/2 to 2 pounds of Fillets of Firm White Fish such as Halibut, Swordfish, or Cod, rinsed in Cold Water, Pin Bones removed, cut into large portions • 3 Cloves of Minced Garlic • 4 Tablespoons of Lime or Lemon Juice • Salt to taste • Freshly Ground Black Pepper to taste • Extra Virgin Olive Oil • 1 Cup of chopped Spring Onion, or 1 Medium Yellow Onion, chopped or sliced • 1/4 Cup of Green Onion Greens, chopped • 1/2 Yellow and 1/2 Red Bell Pepper, Seeded, De-Stemmed, chopped or sliced • 2 Cups of chopped or sliced Tomatoes • 1 Tablespoon of Paprika, Hungarian Sweet • Pinch of Red Pepper Flakes • 1 Large bunch of Cilantro, chopped with some set aside for Garnish • 1 14-Ounce Can of Coconut Milk Ingredients - Rice • 1 Tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil • 1/2 Onion, chopped • 1 Clove of Minced Garlic • 1 Cup of White Rice • 1 3/4 Cups of Boiling Water (check your Rice package for the appropriate ratio of liquid to Rice for the type of rice you are using) • 1 Teaspoon of Salt Instructions Coat the Fish with the Garlic and the Lime Juice, place the Fish pieces in a bowl, add the Minced Garlic and the Lime Juice so that the pieces are well coated. Sprinkle it generously all over with the Salt and the Pepper. If you are planning on serving the Soup with the Rice, start with the Rice. Bring a couple Cups of Water to a boil. Heat one Tablespoon of Olive Oil in a medium saucepan on Medium High Heat. Add the Chopped 1/2 Onion and cook, stirring, until the Onion is translucent. Add the Garlic and cook it for 30 seconds more, until the Garlic is fragrant. Add the raw White Rice and stir to coat completely with the Oil, the Onions, and the Garlic. Add the Boiling Water. (The amount depends on your brand of Rice, check the package. If no amounts are given, add 1 3/4 Cup of Water for every Cup of Rice.) Stir in 1 Teaspoon of Salt. Bring it to a simmer, then lower the heat, cover, and let it cook for 15 minutes, after which, remove from heat until ready to serve with the Soup. Start cooking the Onion, the Bell Pepper, the Tomatoes and the Onion Greens. In a large covered pan (such as a Dutch oven), coat the bottom with about 2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil and heat it on Medium Heat. Add the chopped Onion and cook it for a few minutes until it is softened. Add the Bell Pepper, the Paprika, and the Red Pepper Flakes. Sprinkle them generously with the Salt and the Pepper. (At least a teaspoon of Salt.) Cook them for a few minutes longer, until the Bell Pepper begins to soften. Stir in the Chopped Tomatoes and the Onion Greens. Bring them to a simmer and cook them for 5 minutes, uncovered and stir in the Chopped Cilantro. Layer the Vegetables with the Fish, add the Coconut Milk. Use a large spoon to remove about half of the Vegetables (you'll put them right back in). Spread the remaining Vegetables over the bottom of the pan to create a bed for the Fish. Arrange the Fish pieces on the Vegetables. Sprinkle them with the Salt and the Pepper. Then add back the previously removed Vegetables, covering the fish. Pour coconut milk over the fish and vegetables. Simmer, cook and adjust the seasonings. Bring the soup to a simmer, reduce the heat, cover it and let it simmer for 15 minutes. Taste it and adjust the seasonings. You may need to add more Salt (likely), Lime or Lemon Juice, Paprika, Pepper, or Chili Flakes to get the soup to the desired seasoning for your taste. Garnish it with the Cilantro and serve it with the Rice. Miss Wish ‘Every Christmas table unfolds a story — a rich narrative of heritage, community, and creativity. • Get A Free Toilet Installed - A New Initiative With Broward Water Partnership And Minority Builders Coalition

Get A Free Toilet Installed - A New Initiative With Broward Water Partnership And Minority Builders Coalition November 14, 2024 Share The Broward Water Partnership (BWP) has partnered with the Minority Builders Coalition’s “Home Touch” program to introduce a new initiative offering free installations of high-efficiency toilets for eligible Broward County senior citizens. This initiative, titled the Each Home Counts Water Savers Program, provides free toilet installations in combination with BWP’s $125 Toilet Rebate Program, allowing seniors to upgrade to water-saving fixtures without a significant financial burden. The collaboration supports BWP’s ongoing goal to promote water conservation and environmental stewardship, while also aligning with the Minority Builders Coalition’s efforts to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of seniors in Broward County. The initiative is a part of BWP's larger Conservation Pays program and the "Each Drop Counts" awareness campaign, both of which focus on raising awareness of water conservation and sustainable practices. By eliminating the financial hurdle of installation costs, the program ensures that seniors can easily access the benefits of water conservation and reduced utility bills. “The partnership between the Broward Water Partnership and the Minority Builders Coalition allows senior citizens the opportunity to lower their utility bills, minimize their environmental impact and helps to create a more sustainable future for Broward County. We are excited that this partnership will assist in reaching our senior community educating the importance of water conservation,” said Monica Pognon, Director of Broward County’s Natural Resources Division. The Minority Builders Coalition’s "Home Touch" program addresses the growing challenges many seniors face in maintaining their homes. A significant number of senior residents in Broward County struggle to keep up with household repairs, with low-income and minority seniors facing the greatest challenges. "Home repairs can be challenging to seniors with restricted incomes, disabilities, and no one to call. Too many seniors choose to delay or forego critical repairs, which can make it hazardous for them to remain in their own homes. Our staff are ready to assist so that our elders can be safe and comfortable in the homes they know and love.” said Brian C. Johnson, President & CEO, Minority Builders Coalition. Seniors can follow these 6 steps to get their free toilet installation and $125 toilet rebate: 1. Register your interest in the Each Home Counts Water Savers Program at: https://conservationpays.com/watersavers/ 2. Check to see if your community is participating by clicking the check eligibility button, then enter your address into the service area map. 3. Check how much water your toilet uses. Rebates are available for your old toilets that use 1.6 gallons per flush or more. 4. Complete the application and if approved, you will receive an approval email with the next steps to purchase your new, high-efficiency toilet(s)! Be sure your toilet is WaterSense® Certified and save your receipt! (Please note there is a 2-toilet limit for the $125 rebate and free installation) 5. Once approved, a representative from the Minority Builders Coalition will call to schedule your free installation. 6. File the documentation for your rebate!
