  • Kindergarten And Beyond: What You & Your Child Should Know

Kindergarten And Beyond: What You & Your Child Should Know By Family Features August 15, 2024 Share Starting Kindergarten is a major milestone, one that sets the stage for future learning. Ensuring children are well-equipped to enter Kindergarten sets them up for a successful school year in the short term and academic career in the long term. Kindergarten readiness encompasses a wide range of skills, including academic, social and physical abilities. Yet while many parents think of kindergarten as the formal start of their children's learning, 90% of children's brain development occurs during the first five years of life. The brain is incredibly receptive during these formative years, making it a critical time for children to receive exposure and guidance in diverse areas. Enrolling them in a Quality Preschool or Pre-K Program is one way you can ensure they're creating building blocks for the future, but there are also steps you can take at home. Try implementing these simple habits, recommended by Primrose Schools Chief Early Learning Officer Dr. Amy Jackson, into your family's day-to-day routine: • Read to your children daily to build early literacy skills. This is a good habit to begin as early as infancy because it promotes language development, literacy and understanding of others. Make library trips and story times a special treat for toddlers and encourage preschoolers to read to you by describing what is happening in the pictures or making up their own stories. Keep books in the car so you have a fun way to pass the time on long trips or while waiting for appointments. • Schedule playdates for social development. Once babies are able to sit independently, they'll likely enjoy playdates. At this age, playdates should be closely monitored since babies explore with their hands and mouths. At ages 1 and 2, young children tend to engage in parallel play rather than interacting, but organizing small groups of toddlers can continue to promote social development. Older toddlers enjoy more interactive play and begin to learn concepts like sharing. • Practice counting objects to 10 or more together. It's easy to make "math talk" part of your everyday experience in other ways, too. When reading a story, ask children to count the objects on each page. When eating, encourage math connections by having children count the items on their plates. Children can also explore math through common toys and games, like shape sorters, knob puzzles and nesting cups for infants and toddlers; and large puzzles, sand or water tables and card games for preschoolers. • Encourage physical activities like playing on the playground. Play isn't just for entertainment; it's a building block for healthy growth. It helps children learn from the world around them and develop traits like generosity and honesty. Because it helps children release their full range of emotions and has therapeutic benefits, play also has positive effects on Mental Health. In addition to supporting their Social-Emotional Well-Being, children learn to navigate the world and practice motor skills while at play. • Establish routines at home. A structured school day is filled with routines that provide familiarity and comfort. Routines can serve similar benefits at home by helping children clearly understand what is expected of them and when. A morning routine makes it easy to check the boxes as you prepare for the day and work to get out the door on time. An evening routine helps everyone settle down and prepare for a good night's sleep. • Encourage self-regulation and social skills. Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage your own behavior and reactions, often displayed during actions like taking turns, transitioning from one activity to another or cleaning up for dinner. Social skills include interaction and communication abilities like speech, body language and facial expressions, as well as the ability to play with others and make friends. As a parent, you can model these skills and play games that involve taking turns and cooperation. Playdates also help facilitate positive social experiences for children. • THE BROADWAY BEAT GOES ON

THE BROADWAY BEAT GOES ON By Phyllis Green - Theater Critic March 21, 2024 Share It's like riding a bike! Once a dancer, always a dancer. And what an inspiration to watch 40 plus gorgeous, talented youngsters, ages 55 to 95, strut their stuff in "The New Florida Follies." Playing to a packed house at The Parker in Ft. Lauderdale, "The Broadway Beat" opened with a warm welcome from the Follies Director/Choreographer, Cheryl Steinthal, a striking lady, outlining the outstanding charities they support devoted to the well-being of children. And now, as she says, on with the show 'cause there's no biz like show biz! With an incredible bevy of beautiful babes, and a couple of good 'ole boys, it was a rare treat to watch as they tapped and traversed in and out of dazzling, glitzy headdresses, and short sequined costumes, some of which were created by the gals themselves. Conversely, there was "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" from "South Pacific," done in towels and headbands; to the umbrella routine from "Top Hat;" to the sexy black outfits with groovy gloves and garters from "Cabaret;" to the hip western shorts and cowboy hats from "Will Rogers Follies;" to a full stage vignette from "Into the Woods" to the very stylish blond and brunette coifs; down to the finest detail of proper dance foot-wear. All that with triads, synchronized lines and high kicks and the fastest costume changes and segues Flo Ziegfeld would ever have seen! These ladies, former Rockettes, showgirls and gypsies were the epitome of presentation, performance, and precision. And now, the cherry on the top of this delicious, sweet confection; the appearance of Guest Stars: M&M, Michael Kessler and Melinda Jackson. Equipped with the longest legs ever, the gorgeous, magnificent Melinda graced the stage as if floating in the air, while muscular hunk, Michael, sang and danced his unique style. Suggesting that even Gower and Bennet, and Fosse came to mind, Michael’s rendition of "Rich Man" from "Fiddler" by far exceeded any other choreography; and the famous character, Tevye could have used some of those endearing moves! With some cheeky jazz in "Razzle Dazzle" from "Chicago;" high kicks, top hats and reminiscent steps from "One" in "A Chorus Line;" this show- stopping duo shined with M&M's interpretation of Broadway musicals with unequaled panache. Melinda, on pointe, at the ballet barre, was joined by Michael, with the most exquisite patterns. They performed a highly sophisticated adaptation of "Do You Love Me" from "Fiddler," emotionally packed with those meaningful lyrics and amazing moves that captured the talent, heart and love this couple generates. Kudos to M&M; stars that brought a little Vegas to this already perfect show. In a flag filled finale, the company marched in formation with a salute to all the branches of the Armed Forces, America, and the Great White Way. A standing ovation proved the "The Broadway Beat" goes on and ON! last chance to catch this feel-good show on Sunday March 24 at 2 PM at the Countess de Hoernle Theater, Boca Raton. • 10 Practical Strategies To Navigate Holiday Parties Without Alcohol | sun-times

10 Practical Strategies To Navigate Holiday Parties Without Alcohol South Florida Sun Times Dec 17, 2025 The Holiday Season Is Packed With Festive Gatherings, Family Traditions, And Social Events That Often Revolve Around Drinking. For People In Recovery (Or Anyone Choosing To Skip Alcohol), This Time Of Year Can Bring Unique Challenges. Invitations Pile Up, Expectations Rise, And The Pressure To “Just Have One” Can Feel Relentless. But Staying Sober Doesn’t Mean Missing Out On The Joy, Connection, And Celebration That Makes The Season Special! As Community Outreach Coordinator at Virginia Recovery Centers, an alcohol and drug rehab in Virginia, I’ve seen firsthand just how attainable it is to enjoy holiday gatherings confidently and alcohol-free. All it takes is careful planning, self-awareness, and the right support. That said, below are practical, empowering strategies to help you navigate holiday events without compromising your sobriety. Know Your Triggers Before You Go Holiday gatherings can be emotionally charged, especially when family dynamics, long-standing traditions, or stressful environments are involved. Before accepting an invite, take a moment to reflect on which situations might make you feel vulnerable. Common triggers during the holidays can include being around heavy drinkers, feeling socially anxious, experiencing loneliness or nostalgia, navigating family conflict, and managing unstructured time at long events. Other common triggers are encountering certain people, places, or rituals tied to past drinking. Awareness of these triggers doesn’t eliminate challenges, but it can help you prepare for them. If a certain event has historically been difficult, consider skipping it this year or attending for a shorter amount of time. Protecting your sobriety is more important than maintaining appearances. Have a Plan and a Backup Plan Going into a holiday party with a strategy gives you control over the experience. Think ahead about how you’ll handle conversations, cravings, or unexpected pressure. For example, decide your arrival and departure time. Also, give yourself an “escape plan” so you’re not stuck if things get uncomfortable. It would also be wise to bring your own beverage. Whether it’s flavored sparkling water or a festive mocktail, having something in your hand often prevents people from offering drinks. Telling a trusted friend you’re attending sober can also be helpful, as you may feel more grounded and accountable if you know someone is aware of your intention. I also recommend planning a grounding activity before the event. A walk, meditation, journaling, or a call with a supportive friend can set a calm mindset. And remember that while having a plan is helpful, having a backup plan is essential. If you feel overwhelmed, you can always leave early, shift conversations, step outside for fresh air, or call someone from your support system. Practice Confident “No” Scripts One of the hardest parts of staying sober at holiday parties is dealing with other people’s reactions. Most people aren’t trying to pressure you, as they’re simply following social habits, but it can still feel awkward. So have a few rehearsed responses to make the moment feel effortless. Try these: “I’m not drinking tonight, but thank you!” or “I’m driving later, so I’m sticking to soda.” Another great reply can be: “I’m taking a break from alcohol for my health.” You don’t owe anyone explanations about your sobriety. Short, simple, and confident responses usually shut down pressure quickly. Bring a Support Person (or a Virtual One) If you can bring a partner, friend, or family member who understands your commitment to staying sober, the whole night can become easier. They can redirect conversations, help you exit uncomfortable situations, and offer a sense of safety. If it isn’t possible to go with someone, arrange a text check-in system with your sponsor, therapist, or a sober friend. You can also use recovery apps or online communities that offer “SOS” chats. If needed, step away for a quick breathing break and message someone who can ground you. Having support (even from afar) can disrupt cravings and remind you why your sobriety matters. Choose Events That Support Your Sobriety You don’t have to attend every holiday gathering. If a party is centered around drinking, rowdy traditions, or people who don’t respect your boundaries, it may not be the best environment. So consider alternatives like sober holiday potlucks, morning or afternoon events instead of evening parties, and family-friendly celebrations. Other great events include smaller gatherings with close friends, community or faith-based activities, and volunteering opportunities. There’s strength in choosing events that align with your values and your wellbeing. Not every invitation requires a yes, especially during the holidays. Enjoy Festive Alcohol-Free Options One of the happiest trends in recent years is the explosion of nonalcoholic beverages and mocktails. People are increasingly choosing moderation, and alcohol-free drinks are more accepted than ever. Some ideas to bring or request include: sparkling cranberry or pomegranate spritzers, nonalcoholic champagne or rose, hot cider with cinnamon, and zero-proof craft beers. Holiday-themed mocktails like a peppermint mojito, “nog” latte, and rosemary citrus spritz can also help you feel included without sacrificing your goals. Focus On What You Gain, Not What You Skip Instead of focusing on what you might be missing, shift your attention to what staying sober gives you. These include clear conversations and genuine connections, better sleep, more energy the next day, no hangovers, increased confidence, peace of mind, pride in your progress, and the ability to be fully present with loved ones. Sobriety isn’t about restriction; it’s about freedom and allowing yourself to enjoy the holiday season with clarity and authenticity in a way alcohol simply cannot. Build New Holiday Traditions If drinking used to be a big part of your holiday celebrations, this is your chance to reinvent your traditions by focusing on what truly brings joy, meaning, and peace into your life. New sober-friendly traditions might include hosting a cookie-decorating night, starting a holiday movie marathon, crafting ornaments or decorating the tree. Or, you can take a winter hike or morning walk, attend a holiday concert or light show, prioritize self-care rituals on busy weekends, or create nightly gratitude lists throughout December. Traditions grounded in connection and creativity last far longer (and feel far more fulfilling) than any cocktail. Reward Yourself After the Event After the party, take time to acknowledge your accomplishment! Staying sober in a social setting (especially during the holidays) is something to be proud of. Reward yourself by treating yourself to a special dessert, watching a favorite show, taking a warm bath, writing in a gratitude journal, buying a small gift, or simply reflecting on how good it feels to stay committed. Celebrating these wins reinforces your progress and helps strengthen your sobriety. Remember Your Why At the heart of sobriety is a deeply personal reason, whether it’s health, family, stability, self-respect, or simply wanting a better life. When cravings or pressure arise, reconnect with that reason by asking yourself: How will I feel tomorrow if I stay sober? How will I feel if I don’t? Who am I protecting and honoring with this choice? What future am I building? Remember, your why is stronger than any holiday drink. Staying Sober Is a Gift You Give Yourself! Navigating holiday parties without alcohol isn’t always easy, but it’s absolutely possible. And it’s often more rewarding than you expect! With thoughtful planning, healthy boundaries, supportive people, and a commitment to honoring your wellbeing, you can enjoy celebrations fully and confidently. This year, give yourself the gift of clarity, peace, and presence. Sobriety doesn’t take away from the magic of the season… It enhances it! In her role, Lauren connects individuals and families with the center’s comprehensive addiction treatment programs, including outpatient care, medication-assisted treatment, and holistic therapies such as art and music therapy. • Conference In New Orleans: Combating Antisemitism And Commemorating October 7th | sun-times

Conference In New Orleans: Combating Antisemitism And Commemorating October 7th By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper Dec 2, 2025 As I Am Preparing To Attend A Conference In New Orleans With Mayors From Around The Country, I Can Now Write And Release Information About The Event. Sadly, Details Have Been Under Strict Security Measures Until Recently Due To The Continued Growth In Antisemitism. I was actually invited a few months ago to attend this year’s annual Combatting Antisemitism Movement Summit by the immediate past Israel Counsel General of Miami. With the increase in antisemitic acts since October 7th they have been keenly focused internationally and here in the states urging the importance of calling out hate in today’s world. Antisemitism remains a grave challenge in many societies, manifesting in prejudice, discrimination, and violence against Jewish communities. The conference in New Orleans is bringing together Mayors, scholars, and leaders from diverse backgrounds to address these issues. For two days, we will share our recent experiences and shared strategies for creating a greater understanding of root causes of hatred and ways to change mindsets. Our shared goal remained sharing tools and strategies to counter hate and promote inclusivity. Key topics will include the history of antisemitism, the role of education in prevention, promoting interfaith dialogue, and leveraging social media for positive change. The conference is aimed to equip participants with tools and networks to continue the fight against antisemitism in their communities. During the trip, I will share what measures Hallandale Beach has implemented since October 7th. Our City Manager and Chief of Police has remained vigilant in addressing safety and security at our houses of worship. We have had a few incidents. While none have been violent, they still have been unsettling. Our commission has been vocal advocates both from the dais and through social media against hate and misinformation. To show support of Israel, we adopted a sister city, Sderot which was one of the cities and areas hardest hit by the brutal attacks on October 7th. Commissioner Annabelle Lima Taub facilitated this relationship. We hosted an Arts show from the children of Sderot and a memorial for all the victims of this brutal attack. The art was a therapeutic exercise for the children that experience the attacks. Last year, I asked that we consider naming a street after Sderot and placing a memorial plaque in memory of October 7th. After receiving approvals a date for this special event has been scheduled on Thursday, January 15th. Due to security, we have a limited amount of seats available and the specific details of the event will only be released to those that have rsvp. This street's renaming is symbolic, representing both a literal and figurative path towards unity and progress. Such dedications often serve as public reminders of the values a community holds dear and also reinforced that the horrific unprovoked attack on the State of Israel will not be forgotten. The ceremony is expected to bring together local officials, community members, and representatives from various organizations. It will highlight the significance of the street. This trip to New Orleans promises to be both meaningful and impactful, combining the urgent work of combating antisemitism with the honoring of historical events and community milestones. Through participation in the conference and attendance at the dedication ceremonies, I hope to contribute to a broader movement of remembrance, education, and positive change. • Inspired by the Love of a True Leader

Inspired by the Love of a True Leader By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil June 22, 2023 Share Thursday, the 3rd of Tamuz, marks the 29th Hilula of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Known affectionately and simply as The Rebbe, he was probably the most influential Rabbi in history. With his Shluchim emissaries dispatched to every corner of the world, his impact is felt everywhere you turn. After the decimation of the Holocaust, the Rebbe breathed new life and vitality into the Jewish people, urging them (and demonstrating by example) to celebrate Judaism and live life optimistically, to ‘reclaim’ countless individuals and communities to living a Jewish way of life, and to feel personal responsibility for all others everywhere. In so doing, the Rebbe altered the much-prophesied demise of Judaism, forever shifting the course of history and transforming the landscape of Jewish life. The Rebbe took breathtaking responsibility for the material and spiritual welfare of Jews in the Soviet Union (including masterminding the exodus of thousands), Morocco, Iran, and more, while reaching out to Jews in Curacao, Japan, and Alaska... Israel’s leaders turned to the Rebbe for counsel on public health policies; military strategy; economy; relations with the U.S., Egypt, South Africa, Tunisia and more; and, above all, its educational system. Growing up in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, just a few short streets away from the Rebbe, I was fortunate to see the Rebbe all the time. I prayed with him in his Shul, sang by his Farbrengens, stood at his public gatherings and rallies, and watched every glimpse I could. As a child, I would look around at the thousands of people that would constantly come from all over the world to seek his counsel, hear his talks, or just to see his holy face; and I remember thinking how privileged I was to live right there. Every Sunday for hours,The Rebbe would stand, giving out dollars and blessings to thousands of people from all walks of life. He gave the dollar to be given to a charity of choice. People would of course exchange that dollar for one of their own to give to charity, and keep the dollar they got from the Rebbe’s hand as a sign of blessing. The Rebbe was remarkably accessible and counseled countless individuals from a wide array of backgrounds, including statesmen and artists as diverse as Ronald Reagan, Robert F. Kennedy, Yitzchak Rabin, Menachem Begin, Elie Wiesel, and Bob Dylan, as well as countless “nameless” individuals who were each showered with his individual attention and love. He spoke out about and was active in large public issues like public school education, charity for employees’ distribution, large families, moral education, the energy crisis, a universal moral code for all, creating and bolstering the Food Stamp/WIC System for America’s underprivileged, the responsibility of government, and much more. He believed and taught that the age-old ideals and text of Torah is as real and relevant today as it was at Sinai, over 3,000 years ago. Today, thank G-d, the Rebbe’s teachings and ideals have already become ingrained in our society and inspire millions of Jews and non-Jews. More people than ever are learning his teachings and acting on his wishes of spreading Judaism to Jews, and moral ethics to all people. People of all walks of life flock to his Shul as well as his resting place to pray to G‑d for blessing, guidance and inspiration. In 2013, on the night preceding his election to the Senate, Democratic candidate Cory Booker, an African-American Christian, went to pray at the Rebbe’s Ohel. In 2016, preceding his election, President Trump sent his family to pray at the Ohel on his behalf. Go there any day, any time, and you will see people from all walks of life praying to G-d at that holy site. The Rebbe was a wide-ranging Torah personality whose vast knowledge spanned the entire spectrum of the Torah. His teachings include ideas in Jewish philosophy and theology, commentary on biblical, talmudical and kabbalistic texts, perspectives on world events, and moral and practical directives. At Chabad Chayil we have a group study of The Rebbe’s teachings each Saturday right after Kiddush lunch, which all are welcome to join and thoroughly enjoy. Although the Rebbe was treated as royalty by all who met him, he personally lived modestly and even frugally. While presiding over a vast world empire of institutions and activity, his own Synagogue was simple and in need of a face lift. As a child I always felt bad how simple his synagogue was, and made a promise to myself that when I can one day afford it, I would rebuild his synagogue in the most beautiful way. Over the next few weeks, thousands of communities worldwide will be marking this holy day with special events. I urge you to contact your local synagogue or Chabad to find out what they have planned, but more importantly to see what extra good deed you can do, to perpetuate the Rebbe’s legacy and make the world a better place. You’re of course invited to join us at The Family Shul for a Special Shabbat Dinner & Lunch honoring the Rebbe, which you can RSVP for at: (305) 770-1919. To learn more about this saintly man, visit: www.ChabadChayil.org/rebbe If you would like to join a group of South Floridian’s traveling to the Rebbe’s Ohel on the actual Hilula, feel free to reach out. If you are not able to personally attend, but would like to send a letter or have prayers said on your behalf, it would be an honor to do it on your behalf. Reach out via: www.ChabadChayil.org/Contact and we’ll be in touch. Let’s try to emulate even one aspect of The Rebbe, and the energy will grow from there, bringing the world one step closer to perfection, one step at a time. They are the founders of Gan Chabad Preschool, your local CTeen & CKids chapters, CHAP - an afterschool program for Jewish children in Public Schools and direct Chabad Chayil. • Concerns About Mental Health Medication Side Effects Remain A Barrier To Getting Help For Those Diagnosed With Depression And Anxiety | sun-times

Concerns About Mental Health Medication Side Effects Remain A Barrier To Getting Help For Those Diagnosed With Depression And Anxiety By BPT Jun 19, 2025 Lisa Roberts Has Raised A Family, Reached An Impressively High Level In Her Career, And Been An Anchor For Her Mother And Other Family Members. Suddenly, Within A Very Short Period, Her Brother And Son Were Diagnosed With Chronic Illness, And Her Mother Passed Away After A Too-Brief Illness, Leaving Her Feeling Unmoored. She Found Herself Wondering Why She Was Not Grieving, And Why She Was Not Feeling Much At All. She No Longer Enjoyed Her Job Or Even Got Out Of Bed In The Morning. "My problems were not going away, and I found myself wishing I could just not be here," said Roberts. She made an appointment to see Whitnee Brown, a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and Doctor of Nursing Practice in nearby Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Brown worked with Roberts on exercises to help her accept her grief, and they did help. Yet they both acknowledged that Roberts needed more. Together, they agreed to try a medication treatment plan. "But I was concerned," Roberts noted, "as I did not want to experience side effects; I needed relief." Roberts is not alone in her trepidation. For many Americans, concerns about potential side effects remain a significant barrier. In fact, despite nearly 9 out of 10 Americans (89%) diagnosed with Depression and/or Anxiety believing that Mental Health Medications are somewhat or very effective, more than half of those who have never been on Mental Health Medication (52%) say they would not take medication because of possible side effects. That's according to the latest GeneSight® Mental Health Monitor*, a nationwide survey from Myriad Genetics, Inc., a leader in molecular diagnostics testing and precision medicine. In the survey, a majority of these patients (54%) agree that genetic testing for Mental Health Medications (known as pharmacogenomic or PGx testing) could reduce these concerns. Whitnee Brown uses just such a tool in her practice. The GeneSight test from Myriad Genetics is a pharmacogenomic test that analyzes how a patient's genes may affect medication outcomes. The GeneSight test looks at clinically important genetic variations in DNA providing results that may inform healthcare providers how a patient may break down or respond to certain medications commonly used for Depression, Anxiety, ADHD and other Psychiatric conditions. Dr. Brown recommended the GeneSight test for Roberts and used the results, along with her medical history, to help inform her Mental Health Medication Prescription. "The GeneSight test gives me insights and takes out some of the guesswork associated with prescribing Mental Health Medications." The GeneSight test includes more than 60 FDA-approved medications commonly prescribed for Depression, Anxiety, ADHD and other Psychiatric conditions. Insights from the test can help your clinician understand if you may need dose adjustments, if certain medications may be less likely to work or if they may have an increased risk of side effects based on your genetics. Is genetic testing right for you? Today, Roberts is on medication that works for her. "I'm here!" exclaimed Roberts. "I am able to help my family members, taking them to appointments, going to my job - in fact, I was just promoted - without wanting to just run away!" If a Mental Health Medication has failed you in the past, if your current medication is not working or if your medication is causing unwanted side effects, the GeneSight test may help. If you think genetic testing could help you or a loved one find better mental health treatment options, contact your healthcare provider or learn more at: https://GeneSight.com . Previous Next
