- How Women Can Optimize Health To Combat Cardiovascular Disease | sun-times
How Women Can Optimize Health To Combat Cardiovascular Disease By Feature Impact Jul 23, 2026 The Threat Of Heart Disease And Stroke Is Growing Substantially Among Women And Girls As Rates Climb For Health Factors Such As High Blood Pressure, Diabetes And Obesity, With 6 In 10 U.S. Women Projected To Have At Least One Type Of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) By 2050. This information from a new scientific statement published in "Circulation," the peer-reviewed, flagship journal of the American Heart Association, a global force changing the future of health for all, points to a rise in CVD that's in part fueled by increases in other health factors like Diabetes and Obesity. Nearly 32% of girls ages 2-19 may have Obesity by 2050, highlighting the impact even on younger generations. Findings from the report point to increases among women for all types of CVD, including Heart Disease, Heart Failure, Atrial Fibrillation and Stroke. "Cardiovascular Disease is the leading cause of death for women and remains their No. 1 health risk overall," said Stacey E. Rosen, M.D., FAHA, Volunteer President of the American Heart Association and Executive Director of the Katz Institute for Women's Health and Senior Vice President of Women's Health at Northwell Health. "While many people may think conditions like High Blood Pressure are only occurring in older women, we know this is not the case. We know the factors that contribute to Heart Disease and Stroke begin early in life, even among young women and girls. The impact is even greater among those experiencing adverse social determinants of health such as poverty, low literacy, rural residence and other psychosocial stressors. Identifying the types of trends outlined in this report is critical to making meaningful changes that can reverse this course." However, there is positive news: Rates of High Cholesterol are expected to decline among nearly all groups of women, and improvements are expected in some health behaviors that impact CVD, including healthier eating, more physical activity and less smoking. The most efficient and effective way to reduce the prevalence of CVD is through prevention, prioritizing optimal health through the four health behaviors (eat better, be more active, quit tobacco and get healthy sleep) and four health factors (manage weight, control Cholesterol, manage Blood Sugar and manage Blood Pressure) that comprise the American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8. Health Behaviors Promote healthy choices in the places where people learn, live and receive care, like schools, community centers, pediatric clinics and gynecology offices. Use digital tools, when helpful, to encourage and reinforce positive lifestyle changes. Health Factors Managing chronic conditions like High Blood Pressure, Diabetes and Obesity early can make a difference, especially for women at higher risk. Work with your health care team to prioritize long-term support for managing these conditions, including early check-ins, team-based care and the use of digital tools that make care easier to access. Care at Every Life Stage Each stage of life offers an opportunity to spot risks early and protect heart health. For example, pediatricians should know that early menstrual periods can signal higher future Cardiovascular risk. Coordinated care across specialties should be integrated before, during and after pregnancy. Research should continue to explore how lifestyle changes and Hormone Therapy around Menopause impact women's heart health. Social and Demographic Factors Health systems should consider how social challenges - like access to healthy food, transportation or safe housing - combine with medical risks, designing interventions that improve heart health in each setting. - Freedom’s Greatest Hour Of Danger Is Now: What If the Constitution No Longer Applied?
Freedom’s Greatest Hour Of Danger Is Now: What If the Constitution No Longer Applied? By John & Nisha Whitehead November 29, 2023 Share We are approaching critical mass, the point at which all hell breaks loose. The government is pushing us ever closer to a constitutional crisis. What makes the outlook so much bleaker is the utter ignorance of the American people—and those who represent them—about their freedoms, history, and how the government is supposed to operate. As Morris Berman points out in his book Dark Ages America, “70 percent of American adults cannot name their Senators or Congressmen; more than half don't know the actual number of senators, and nearly a quarter cannot name a single right guaranteed by the First Amendment. Sixty-three percent cannot name the three branches of government. Other studies reveal that uninformed or undecided voters often vote for the candidate whose name and packaging (e.g., logo) are the most powerful; color is apparently a major factor in their decision.” More than government corruption and ineptitude, Police Brutality, Terrorism, Gun Violence, Drugs, Illegal Immigration or any other so-called “danger” that threatens our nation, civic illiteracy may be what finally pushes us over the edge. As Thomas Jefferson warned, no nation can be both ignorant and free. Unfortunately, the American people have existed in a technology-laden, entertainment-fueled, perpetual state of cluelessness for so long that civic illiteracy has become the new normal for the citizenry. It’s telling that Americans were more able to identify Michael Jackson as the composer of a number of songs than to know that the Bill of Rights was the first 10 Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. In fact, most immigrants who aspire to become citizens know more about national civics than native-born Americans. Surveys indicate that a majority in every state but Vermont would fail a test of U.S. Citizenship Questions. Not even the government bureaucrats who are supposed to represent us know much about civics, American history and geography, or the Constitution although they take an oath to uphold, support and defend the Constitution against “enemies foreign and domestic.” For instance, a few years ago, a couple attempting to get a Marriage License was forced to prove to a government official that New Mexico is, in fact, one of the 50 states and not a foreign country. You can’t make this stuff up. Here’s a classic example of how surreal the landscape has become. Every year, the White House issues a proclamation affirming the importance of the Bill of Rights. These proclamations pay lip service to the government’s commitment to upholding the Constitution and guarding against government abuses of power. Don’t believe it for a second. The government doesn’t want its abuses checked or its powers restricted. For that matter, this is not a government that holds the Constitution in high esteem. Indeed, we wouldn’t be in this sorry state if it weren’t for the damage inflicted in recent years on the Freedoms enshrined in the Bill of Rights, which historically served as the bulwark from government abuse. In the so-called name of national security, the Constitution has been steadily chipped away at, undermined, eroded, whittled down, and generally discarded to such an extent that what we are left with is but a shadow of the robust document adopted more than two centuries ago. The Bill of Rights—462 words that represent the most potent and powerful rights ever guaranteed to a group of people officially—became part of the U.S. Constitution on December 15th, 1791, because early Americans such as James Madison and Thomas Jefferson understood the need to guard against the government’s inclination to abuse its power. Yet the reality we must come to terms with is that in the America we live in today, the government does whatever it wants. Make no mistake: if our individual freedoms have been restricted, it is only so that the government’s powers could be expanded at our expense. Government Surveillance, Militarized Police, SWAT Team Raids, Asset Forfeiture, Eminent Domain, Overcriminalization, Armed Surveillance Drones, Whole Body Scanners, Stop and Frisk Searches (all sanctioned by Congress, the White House, the Courts and the like), etc., these are merely the weapons of the Police State. The power of the Police State is dependent on a populace that meekly obeys without question. Remember: when it comes to the staggering loss of civil liberties, the Constitution hasn’t changed. Rather, it is the American people who have changed. Those who gave us the Constitution and the Bill of Rights believed that the government exists at the behest of its citizens. The government’s purpose is to protect, defend and even enhance our freedoms, not violate them. It was no idle happenstance that the Constitution opens with these three powerful words: “We The People.” Those who founded this country knew quite well that every citizen must remain vigilant or freedom would be lost. As Thomas Paine recognized, “It is the responsibility of the patriot to protect his country from its government.” You have no rights unless you exercise them. Still, you can’t exercise your rights unless you know what those rights are. Education precedes action. If there is to be any hope for restoring our freedoms and reclaiming our runaway government, we will have to start by breathing life into those three powerful words that set the tone for everything that follows in the Constitution: “We The People.” People get the government they deserve. It’s up to us. We have the power to make and break the government. We the American people—the citizenry—are the arbiters and ultimate guardians of America’s Welfare, Defense, Liberty, Laws and Prosperity. It’s time to stop waiting patiently for change to happen. A healthy, representative government is hard work. It takes a citizenry that is informed about the issues, educated about how the government operates, and willing to make the sacrifices necessary to stay involved, whether that means forgoing Monday night football in order to attend a city council meeting or risking arrest by picketing in front of a politician’s office. Whatever you do, please don’t hinge your freedoms on politics. The Constitution is neutral when it comes to politics. What the Constitution is not neutral about, however, is the government’s duty to safeguard the rights of the citizenry. “We The People” also have a duty that goes far beyond the act of voting: as I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, it’s our job to keep freedom alive using every nonviolent means available to us. Know your rights. Exercise your rights. Defend your rights. If not, you will lose them. Freedom’s greatest hour of danger is now. To Censor or Not To Censor - A History Lesson: “Parental Rights in Education Bill” Dubbed The “Don’t Say Gay” Bill April 14, 2022 Share One of the hot news stories is the Bill in Florida banning the discussion of Sexual Orientations or Gender Identities in Elementary Schools. The bill is called “Parental Rights in Education Bill” but has been dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” Bill. This, of course, has led to a national debate about censorship, decency and age appropriateness. This is not the first of this discussion as schools are passing similar laws against issues like “Critical Race Theory” and taking books off school library shelves deemed inappropriate. As always, this column does not propose to answer any of these debates, but, historically speaking, censorship is not new and looking at historical examples which may help us make more informed decisions today. Actual laws allowing for censorship are in no way new. President John Adams signed the Alien and Sedition Acts into law which fined or arrested anyone speaking out against the Government. President Woodrow Wilson signed a similar Sedition Act. Lincoln did not sign a Sedition Law, he just locked everyone up who spoke out against him, claiming it as a war measure. Yet, I want to focus on a particularly difficult time when censorship was rampant and to consider how one particular President handled the situation. The year was 1950 and America was embroiled in the Red Scare, where we were suspecting Communists were hiding under our beds and in our closets. Granted, this was not just paranoia, as communists had infiltrated American Agencies and Organizations. Before 1950, The House Un-American Activities Committee had already held trials to stamp out Communists in the movie business and created the infamous blacklists. In this same year, a little-known Senator from Wisconsin gave a speech in West Virginia, claiming to have a list of Communists who were working for the State Department. Overnight, Joseph McCarthy became famous and McCarthyism was born. McCarthyism is often compared to a witch hunt, especially after the release of "The Crucible," but there is one stark difference: there were no ghosts in Salem but there were Communists in the Government. However, what McCarthy did was greatly exaggerate the situation for personal gain and created a frenzy in this nation to rid all aspects of Communism from everywhere. One area where McCarthyism focused its attacks were libraries, especially the State Department’s overseeing libraries. In April 1953, two of McCarthy’s Chief Staffers, Roy Cohn and David Schine, took a tour of Europe, attacking the books in the libraries and the State Department Officials who ran them. After the tour, the State Department issued a list of which books were appropriate and which were not. While some of these books were overtly Communist, most were not. Some were banned simply because an author who was not a Communist would not publicly reject Communism. President Eisenhower was in a tough position. He did not agree with McCarthy, but they were in the same party and McCarthy held a great deal of power. Eisenhower refused to tangle with McCarthy publicly, as it was his policy not to debate any opponent publicly, possibly his greatest character trait and one I wish modern presidents could mimic. Yet finally the President had had enough. On June 14th, 1953, while speaking at Dartmouth College, he took up the idea of Censorship. After speaking about having fun and joy in life, he spoke about courage. He ended that part of his speech with: “Don't join the book burners. Don't think you are going to conceal faults by concealing evidence that they ever existed. Don't be afraid to go into your library and read every book, as long as that document does not offend our own ideas of decency. That should be the only censorship. “How will we defeat Communism unless we know what it is and what it teaches and why does it have such an appeal for men? Why are so many people swearing allegiance to it?” “And we have got to fight it with something better, not try to conceal the thinking of our own people. They are part of America. And even if they think ideas that are contrary to ours, their right to say them, their right to record them and their right to have them at places where they are accessible to others is unquestioned, or it isn't America.” When asked about his statements a couple of days later at a press conference, Ike added, “When I talk about books or the right of dissemination of knowledge, am I [not] talking about any document or any other kind of thing that attempts to persuade or propagandize America into Communism? Indeed, our courts found 11 Communists guilty of practically treasonous action; they pointed out that these men were dedicated to the destruction of the United States’ form of Government by force and that they took orders from a Foreign Government. So, manifestly, I am not talking about that kind of thing when I talk about free access to knowledge.” As an academic, I agree with President Eisenhower that information should not scare us. He went on to say that if more Americans had read Mein Kompf, we might have been better prepared to stop Hitler, so reading more about why people were attracted to Communism might not be a bad thing. But notice that Ike did make two exemptions: those that “offend our own ideas of decency” and those that “persuade or propagandize.” For myself I would add "age appropriateness." Think about our movie ratings. Most PG-13 Movies are not bad, but they are not age appropriate for younger children to learn about yet or without parents’ approval. I know this is a difficult subject. We have been fighting it for years. When it comes to our children, we will probably never stop fighting it. Eisenhower warned us against Censorship, but he also believed there were certain things that should not be read.
