Both Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida and the Miami International Piano Festival begin their 2024-2025 Seasons, while the City of Aventura co-presents the first two of four “YI Love Jewish” shows highlighting Yiddish music and dance. Set to the vibrant music of Venezuelan composers, this high-energy, technically demanding piece for five couples captivates and thrills audiences. Talented male dancers then take the stage in Issaev's Vuelo, performed to Anton Arensky's beautiful "Nocturne." The program also includes Alberto Méndez's contemporary ballet Eros' Game, a pas de troisissetto set to the timeless music of Handel and Haydn that combines classical music with contemporary dance to explore themes of passion and love. • Jack & Jill Center Summer Campers Learn To Be Lifesavers During CPR Training | sun-times

Jack & Jill Center Summer Campers Learn To Be Lifesavers During CPR Training South Florida Sun Times Jul 9, 2026 Just Because School Is Out, Learning Shouldn’t Take A Summer Break. Education Is Year-Round. That’s Why Rick Case Automotive Group President and CEO Rita Case Paid A Visit To Jack & Jill Center To Donate CPR Anytime Training Kits For Them To participate In CPR Training. “I embrace every opportunity I have to teach children important skills they can apply now and take with them as they progress into adulthood,” said Case. “I cannot emphasize enough the importance of feeling confident performing CPR because you never know when you might need to perform this lifesaving technique. I have made it my mission to equip as many people in our community as possible with the ability to be a hero and save a life. We are turning bystanders into lifesavers.” The team from Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital led the CPR training and the team from the American Heart Association was also on hand to assist in facilitating the training. The campers presented handmade thank you notes to Case, and they each took home a CPR kit for their family that includes a Mini Anne CPR learning manikin, one foam board AED training simulator and digital access to instruction and practice in English and Spanish. The American Heart Association’s Nation of Lifesavers initiative focuses on turning bystanders into lifesavers by encouraging people to learn Hands-Only CPR and act in emergencies. In South Florida, thanks to a generous donation from Rick Case Automotive Group, the American Heart Association Greater Miami/Fort Lauderdale has made CPR Anytime Training Kits available to non-profits, schools, hospitals and city governments in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. According to the American Heart Association, 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of the hospital every year. In order to save more lives, the number of people who respond to cardiac arrest by calling 911 must increase, they must have access to high-quality CPR, and they must get and use an AED as soon as it is available. The importance of CPR kits cannot be overstated, particularly for children and infants. More than 23,000 children experience cardiac arrest outside of the hospital each year with 40% related to sports and nearly 20% are infants. Unfortunately, infant mortality rates in Broward County are on the rise, and the county leads the state with those numbers. Cardiac arrest accounts for 10% to 15% of sudden unexpected infant deaths. • Condos Are Facing Major Assessments: Many Seniors on Fixed Incomes Simply Cannot Afford It

Condos Are Facing Major Assessments: Many Seniors on Fixed Incomes Simply Cannot Afford It By Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper September 26, 2024 Share Last Thursday, Vice Mayor Anabelle Lima-Taub, Senator Jason Pizzo and I had the honor to attend a town hall that was hosted by the Hemispheres. Over the past months the Board of Directors have been working to address many building issues. The main concern was a 56-million-dollar assessment that was passed while they are still paying off a 32.5-million-dollar assessment for 2019. Their challenges are the same that are being faced by the boards throughout our state. Deferred maintenance, 40 Year and 50-Year Building Safety Inspections 200 percent plus insurance increases, Structural Inspections Reserves Studies (SIRS), Emergency Life Safety System requirements (ELSS) and rising cost of running condominiums in general have threatened the ability of many seniors and individuals on fixed income to stay in their homes. During the meeting, I had a chance to explain our budget and the projects that are underway. I shared the news that we have lowered the tax rate to roll back and while addressing many Infrastructure and other vital services. The most important discussion was about what role the City plays when it comes to Building Safety, ELSS and implementing the new Condominium Laws. I made it clear our City has no control over private Condominium Boards. They are regulated by The State Department of Business and Professional Regulations. Vice Mayor Anabelle Lima-Taub championed the Condo Transparency Law here in the City which I was proud to co-sponsor and that became a blueprint for the state. We do require Condominiums to file certain documents with the City to be placed on our website. The law helps residents and owners to have more access to records but there is limited control other than a fine if it is not submitted. Our Police Department does have the ability if there is “proof” of Financial Crime to investigate. Proof means Actual Records, Receipts and Bank Information. It does not mean speculation, hearsay, or a question of impropriety. What the city is responsible for is making sure all of the Building and Fire Safety Requirements are met. 40 and 50 Year Building Inspections MUST be performed, and all Fire Systems are implemented. If these items are not performed the City can issue Notice of Violations! Our Building Official in the event of a Safety Report comes in with “Eminent Failure” has the authority to Red Tag a part or all of a building if the board does not take immediate action! This has only happened once in the City. It was found that a garage’s supporting beams were failing. The board immediately shored up the garage structure which allowed residents to remain safely in the building. If the building does not address NOVs they can be taken to the Special Magistrate. The Magistrate will rule on the case and either give time to cure or issue a final order. Final orders can be heard as continuance so long as the building has filed for Permits and if moving forward addressing the issue. Our Code Enforcement is a tool for compliance not meant to be punitive. Many residents do not understand that it is not an immediate process. The process can take months or more depending on the type of work that needs to be performed. This was the case with the Hemispheres. In 2019 there was a final order for Multiple Violations including: Structural, Painting, Seawalls, Parking Lots, Roofs, and Common Walls. Since 2019 the old board has been working on many of these issues. The COVID-19 Pandemic hit in 2020, so many projects took much longer and grew in scope. Prices change as well. Most of the projects have been completed. There were major overruns on a pool project that resulted in 6.00 plus more in costs. While completion of the old projects is underway the condominium is now faced with a 300% increase in insurance, additional cost of six million plus for pool, the SIRS and ELSS. This is what led to the 56-million-dollar price tag. It is an understatement to say residents were so alarmed they filed a petition to stop the assessment and reached out for help from the City and Senator Pizzo. Our Fire Marshall clarified the ELSS does have to be acted on due to State Law. Many condominiums have continued putting off installing Fire Sprinklers for years, thinking that the mandate would be removed. That is not the case. The programs require that buildings begin to evaluate what their plan will include, get bids, and start the process of filing Permits. These are steps that must be taken that result in building out by 2026. Vice Mayor Lima-Taub announced that she and I will be cosponsoring a resolution to request that Broward County create a Condominium Relief Fund like Dade County. The goal is to at a minimum help those seniors on Fixed Income that simply cannot afford the assessment. Residents’ that attended the meeting hoped that the assessment would be postponed. A petition is being circulated please visit Vice Mayor Lima-Taub’s Facebook page. I will be sending out the link via email. Sign up at: www.mayorjoycooper.com Senator Pizzo then took the floor to go step by step with the many questions raised about the assessment, lack of access to information when the assessment was proposed and passed, what items truly need to be SIRS and the timing of the ELSS. The meeting lasted over 4 hours, so this is a very abridged version. If the assessment was passed and approved then payments begin October 1st. There was a commitment to make sure that the Board would post and make sure all of the information asked for was sent out and posted. The new State Law has made it clear that nonresponse to records requests can be a Misdemeanor and the Second Violation will be a Felony. Another issue was that meetings on zoom did not allow participation. The Senator made sure it was clear that the board meetings must be conducted properly according to State Laws. He also made a commitment he would spend time with the manager and board to review the list of projects. I will follow up on that meeting. It is critical that all boards understand the SIRS and what changes were made in 2022. I requested that he share a summary on white paper so I can make sure it is published and shared. Please feel free to contact me anytime with your questions, concerns and ideas to make our city a better place.I’m reachable at the office: (954) 457-1318. Mobile/Text: (954) 632-5700. • Affected By The Recent Storms? SBA Opens Business Recovery Center to Assist Floridians Applying for a Disaster Loan

Affected By The Recent Storms? SBA Opens Business Recovery Center to Assist Floridians Applying for a Disaster Loan May 11, 2023 Share The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) recently opened a Business Recovery Center (BRC) in Broward County at the Urban League of Broward County in Fort Lauderdale. At the BRC, SBA’s Customer Service Representatives will assist Floridians applying for SBA disaster loans for losses due to severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that occurred on April 12-14. “Our Business Recovery Centers are one of the most powerful resources at SBA’s disposal to support business owners in the midst of a disaster,” said Francisco Sanchez, Jr., Associate Administrator, Office of Disaster Recovery and Resilience. “Business owners can meet in-person with our specialists to apply for SBA disaster loans and get information on the full breadth of our programs designed to help them navigate their recovery.” The disaster declaration covers Broward County, which is eligible for both Physical and Economic Injury Disaster Loans from the SBA. Small businesses and most private nonprofit organizations in the following adjacent counties are eligible to apply only for SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs): Collier, Hendry, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach in Florida. Disaster survivors with insurance should not wait for their settlement before applying to the SBA. • Artificial Reef Modules Delivered to Hollywood

Artificial Reef Modules Delivered to Hollywood June 23, 2022 Share 1000 Mermaids has delivered the artificial reef modules that are now on display at four locations around the City. The displays give the public a chance to see the structures up close, learn about the project, and how they can protect our offshore reefs before they are deployed in the waters off the coast of Hollywood. The modules are on display at the following locations through the month of June: • Hollywood Beach Broadwalk at Johnson Street • ArtsPark at Young Circle (Grove Area) • City Hall Circle (East-side Memorial area) • Driftwood Community Center The Ocean Rescue Alliance (ORA) in partnership with the City of Hollywood’s Community Redevelopment Agency, is preparing to create its second 1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project site off the coast of Hollywood Beach with 20 ocean-friendly artificial reef modules. The Hollywood site will bring the total number of artificial reef structures deployed in the ocean off South Florida's coast to over 100 since the project was originally launched 5 years ago. The 1000 Mermaids Project is a monumental public eco-art project in the form of an artificial reef installation that also serves as an underwater eco-friendly destination for coral restoration, eco-tourism & research. The artificial reef sculptures, weighing between 2200-3300 lbs each, come outfitted with the patented "Coral Lok" system allowing coral to be out-planted directly to the artificial reefs. Of the 20 artificial reef structures being deployed, 5 feature artistic sculptures such as mermaids, a swim up selfie mermaid tail, and an industrial diver suit. The remaining 15 structures, built by Reef Cells in Boynton Beach, have biological bases specifically engineered to support fish habitat and provide coral restoration opportunities. "The city is excited to work with Ocean Rescue Alliance to continue to expand this project and offer additional underwater sites that beachgoers can swim to from shore," says Mayor Josh Levy. "The Ocean Rescue Alliance is looking forward to deploying this artificial reef in partnership with the City of Hollywood to make a reef site that truly connects the community back to the marine environment." says Shelby Thomas, Co-Founder and CEO of Ocean Rescue Alliance. "More importantly, this reef site will continuously host and protect marine life while facilitating unique opportunities that will serve the community for generations to come.” Reef Cells uses eco-friendly materials including limestone concrete & calcium carbonate that encourage corals and other sea creatures to attach themselves to the reef with reef shapes that are strategically designed to provide a home to thousands of fish and invertebrates. Reef Cells are a proven solution for building new reef communities while providing destinations for divers to experience the thrill of exploring these unique underwater sculpture gardens. Mermaids have long been a symbol of humans’ connection to the ocean. Sculptures for this installation were created by using 3D scans of real people to create the mermaids that are artistically crafted onto the modules.
