- PURRR Adoption + Sanctuary Awarded $25,000 Grant - Hundreds of South Florida Spay + Neuter Surgeries Funded by Specialty License Plates | sun-times
PURRR Adoption + Sanctuary Awarded $25,000 Grant - Hundreds of South Florida Spay + Neuter Surgeries Funded by Specialty License Plates South Florida Sun Times Dec 3, 2025 PURRR Adoption + Sanctuary (PURRR) Can Now Offer Free Spay + Neuter Services For TNR (Trap, Neuter, And Return) And Community Cats Thanks To A $25,000 Grant From Florida Animal Friend. The Organization Provides Grants To Animal Organizations Throughout The State Of Florida To Support Low-Or No-Cost Spay + Neuter Services, Funded Directly By Its Specialty Spay + Neuter License Plate, Helping Save Countless Homeless Pets. PURRR Will Use The Funds To Spay + Neuter Over 400 South Florida Cats. Founded in 2018, PURRR Adoption + Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) NonProfit Organization with a mission to transform cats' lives one PURRR at a time, through rescue, adoption, and spay + neuter initiatives that help reduce overpopulation and enrich the human-feline connection. PURRR is committed to giving cats and their companions a better future by offering a safe haven and encouraging responsible pet ownership. PURRR offers low-cost, high-quality, high-volume spay + neuter services exclusively for cats. Since launching its clinic in 2021, PURRR has become one of the few organizations in Broward County solely dedicated to this initiative. In 2024 alone, PURRR performed 3,048 surgeries, 2,598 at its clinic in Fort Lauderdale and 450 through partnerships with shelters. “South Florida faces a feline overpopulation crisis, driven by limited access to affordable, high-volume spay + neuter,” said Michelle Schecht, Executive Director of PURRR Adoption + Sanctuary. “We are deeply grateful to Florida Animal Friend for their commitment to animal welfare. This vital support expands our efforts to prevent overpopulation and provide lifesaving services for the region’s most vulnerable animals. The community can join the cause by purchasing a spay/neuter license plate. Each purchase directly funds programs like ours.” Feline overpopulation in South Florida stems from a lack of accessible, affordable, and high-volume spay + neuter services, compounded by the continued, unmanageable growth of the community cat population. The demand for services far exceeds availability, particularly for free-roaming cats. PURRR’s Spay + Neuter program is built on principles of accessibility, collaboration, and impact, serving the public, independent trappers, rescue organizations, and underserved communities. To support spay + neuter, PURRR offers significantly reduced rates for community cats, along with discounted pricing for rescues. These subsidies ensure that cost is never a barrier to preventing future litter and reducing overpopulation. PURRR believes that reducing feline overpopulation requires a unified, community-driven approach. PURRR has cultivated strong partnerships to extend its reach and maximize impact. Its clinic model combines surgical efficiency with compassionate, individualized care, ensuring each cat receives the attention and safety they deserve. PURRR’s dedicated team is driven by a deep love for cats and a commitment to their well-being and is committed to providing consistent, lifesaving services to South Florida’s most vulnerable feline populations. The community cat population remains largely unmanaged and continues to grow. Financial support and resources in South Florida remain limited and insufficient to meet the community’s growing needs. This leaves a critical gap, particularly for community cats and those caring for large colonies, placing the burden on independent trappers, grassroots rescuers, and nonprofits who also have limited resources. Most trappers and independent rescuers pay out of pocket or try to fundraise to cover the cost of sterilization, which can be prohibitive when managing dozens, or even hundreds, of cats. With limited funding and few affordable options, necessary surgeries are often delayed, leading to continued breeding cycles and further straining the system. As the feline population continues to grow, the current availability of services cannot meet the ongoing and urgent demand, especially during peak kitten season, which is year-round with surges in spring and late summer. High-volume, affordable, feline-only programs like PURRR’s are vital to closing this gap and providing the community with a realistic, accessible path to preventing overpopulation. - City Of Hollywood Launches Turtle-Friendly Lighting Recognition Program
City Of Hollywood Launches Turtle-Friendly Lighting Recognition Program March 2, 2023 Share This week marks the beginning of the 2023 Sea Turtle Nesting Season, which takes place every year from March 1st through October 31st. During this time, the City Of Hollywood’s “Turtle Friendly Lighting Ordinance” is in effect, when the City’s Hatchlings are attracted to light. On undeveloped beaches, the ocean horizon is lighter than the land so new hatchlings head toward the water. In an urban beach environment, artificial light from buildings can disorient hatchlings and attract them away from the ocean. Turtle friendly lighting can minimize disorientation and make Hollywood Beach more hospitable to these endangered species. The Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program (BCSTCP) documented 3,650 nests on the County's 24-mile coastline (including the Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park) in 2022. That’s a record for our area, and Hollywood’s sandy beach plays an important role in that success. Our beach is the desired nesting habitat for three species of endangered sea turtles: leatherbacks, loggerheads and greens. It is vital that everyone does their part to ensure future successful nesting seasons on Hollywood Beach. Sea Turtle Friendly Lighting Lighting near the beach should be "sea turtle-friendly" and follow these three criteria established by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC): Keep it low: Fixtures should be mounted as low as possible to achieve their purpose and their bulbs should produce the lowest lumens (light output) necessary for the task. In addition to low lumens, keep the fixture shielded, the bulb, lamp or glowing lens should be shielded from the beach and the interior lights should not be visible from the beach. If you live near the beach, close your curtains, shades and blinds after sunset. One item you may not be aware of is, wavelength, no we aren't talking about the length of the ocean waves here. They are talking about the output, the fixtures/bulbs must produce long wavelength light (560 nm or longer) without filters, gels or lenses. Amber and red LEDs are good examples of these types of light. Also keep in mind that even lights from cell phones can also disturb nesting and hatching sea turtles. If you visit the beach at night during nesting season, keep your cell phone safely stowed in your pocket or bag. Turtle Friendly Lighting Recognition Pilot Program The City Of Hollywood has launched a Turtle Friendly Lighting Recognition Pilot Program. The goal of the program is to increase awareness and compliance with the City’s turtle friendly lighting ordinance by way of recognition of those property owners who are certified compliant. Hollywood’s turtle friendly lighting ordinance (§108, O-2011-07) requires that exterior lights be mounted as low in elevation as possible, shielded so that the light source is not visible from the beach, directed down and away from the beach and have a low wattage amber or red bulb. To reduce or eliminate the visibility of interior light from the beach, tinted glass or film must be installed on north, east and south facing doors and windows on new developments. Existing buildings can install window and door tint, move light fixtures away from windows, close the blinds and curtains, and turn off all unnecessary lights. To receive recognition, a property must fully comply with the City’s turtle friendly lighting ordinance (§108, O-2011-07). The certification process can be found at: www.HollywoodFL.org/TurtleLighting Apply today to be recognized by clicking the online application at: www.HollywoodFL.org/TurtleLighting < Previous News Next News >
- How Do You Treat Others? Take A Different Strategy For Different Results
How Do You Treat Others? Take A Different Strategy For Different Results By Bryan Golden June 23, 2022 Share How do you treat other people? Are you ever condescending or rude? Do you feel some people are more important than others? Do you think that a person's Education, Occupation and Economic Status determine their significance? Perhaps you take the opposite tact. Do you treat everyone as being important? Do you feel a person's worth is intrinsic and independent of their Job, Wealth or Social Status? Are you polite and considerate? The manner in which you treat others has a direct bearing on how they respond to and treat you. As the opening quote so aptly states, people tend to meet your expectations. Of course, this doesn't happen 100 Percent of the time, but it does hold true in many circumstances. Suppose you bought a vacuum cleaner and it stopped working 10 days after the Store's Return Period had ended? Aggravated, you rush back to return it. As you approach William, a customer service associate, you are annoyed and expect to be told that there is nothing the Store can do for you. Being ready for a fight, you snap at William as soon as he asks how he can help you. William spends his day facing upset and irate customers. Now he has to deal with you. Do you think William will go out of his way to help you out? Probably not. What if you take a different strategy? Granted, you are upset that the vacuum cleaner broke and you realize that technically the Store doesn't have to help you. But you also understand that there is always latitude in spite of Formal Return Policies. Walking up to William you have a smile and the attitude that you know William will be able to help you resolve your problem. You treat William with respect and ask for his assistance. This strategy will give you a much better chance for a satisfactory resolution of your problem. People do indeed react to how you treat them. They will subconsciously adjust their performance to meet your expectations. Expect little and you'll get less. Let someone know that you believe in them, their capabilities and potential and you will get more than you anticipated. It's difficult, if not impossible, to force a person to behave in a particular fashion. Even in situations where you may wield power over someone via employment or other circumstances, coerced cooperation will lead to resentment and an unstable relationship at best. At times, you have to treat people in a way that is the opposite of how they are acting. This is often difficult to do. It's a real challenge to treat someone well when they are treating you poorly. Although treating them as poorly as they are treating you may be tempting, the chances of you reaching your objective are close to zero. Usually, the only thing that will happen is having the situation deteriorate further. Treating someone well who is treating you poorly doesn't necessarily guarantee success, but it does give you the best chance of a positive solution. In these cases, treating someone well requires a lot of patience, persistence and perseverance. Treat people as you want them to act. Let others know you recognize their potential and believe in their capabilities. Do these things and you will be pleased with the results. Bryan is the Author of "Dare to Live Without Limits." Álvaro Perez Miranda: As founder of APM Restaurant Group, Álvaro Perez Miranda has cultivated a unique approach to hospitality through an uncompromising dedication to quality, authenticity, and attention to detail. Born in Venezuela, Perez Miranda studied art in the U.S. and Italy before moving to Tokyo. He spent a total of 15 years in Japan promoting Italian cuisine, eventually producing, building and managing more than 70 restaurant projects.. Perez Miranda opened his first Japanese restaurant, the casual sushi bowl eatery Wabi Sabi, in 2018, followed by the upscale Hiyakawa two years later. By 2023, APM had added two more concepts, both in partnership with master sushi chef Masayuki Komatsu: Midorie, a sister establishment to Wabi Sabi, and Ogawa, a 12-seat omakase sushi experience inspired by Osaka’s kappo-style cuisine. Across all of APM’s concepts, Perez Miranda has worked tirelessly to manifest the highest standard of Japanese culinary artistry in Miami, adopting Japanese principles such as omotenashi (mindful hospitality), komakai (fine attention to detail), and sensai (sensitivity) in pursuit of a perfectly authentic experience. This extends not only to ingredients – painstakingly sourced from across Japan, particularly Tokyo’s Toyosu fish market and Ibaraki prefecture – but to treating guests with the utmost care and warmth, making them feel as comfortable and at home as if they were at the home of a cherished friend. Through his art business Blackship Gallery, Perez Miranda has also been able to place stunning artworks in each restaurant, commissioned by the celebrated Japanese artists in his portfolio. All of this has earned Perez Miranda and his businesses extraordinary accolades. He was named a Goodwill Ambassador for Japanese Cuisine by the country’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, the first U.S. Latino to hold such an honor, in 2023. In 2024 Perez Miranda was appointed Culinary Ambassador of Ibaraki, the largest agricultural prefecture in Japan, known widely for the finest products including Hitachi Wagyu and Ibaraki melon, by the governor of Ibaraki Mr. Oigawa. In 2024, Perez Miranda’s latest project, Ogawa earned a Michelin Star in its first year of operation and was named the highest rated fine dining restaurant in America. In January 2026 Perez Miranda will open his first non-Japanese concept in South Florida, Emelina, a 16-seat counter serving a Cuban tasting menu in partnership with rising star Chef Osmel Gonzalez (Entrenos, 1 Michelin Star, Michelin Green Star) and his wife Chef Camila Salazar. - Judaism: The Soundtrack - What Can Speak But Has No Words
Judaism: The Soundtrack - What Can Speak But Has No Words By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil February 23, 2023 Share Give up? The answer is music. Music can speak in ways that words alone do not. Just think of the first concert you ever went to. Or that angsty band you discovered in tenth grade that blew your mind and changed your life . . . or at least it gave you a soundtrack that, when you hear it today, brings you back to those exact experiences. This is true even of music with lyrics: a song will take you to places an essay seldom could. This winter South Florida will be treated to JUDAISM: THE SOUNDTRACK, a musical experience exploring the “nigun,” or Chasidic melody, beyond its soulful sound. As Rabbi Shneur Zalman, founder of Chabad Chasidic philosophy, taught: “Music is the pen of the soul.” Participants will listen to the story of their soul in its own words, to the feelings—of love or longing, of devotion or despair—that express the complicated relationship between a spiritual soul and a material world. The ninety minutes of pure delight, featuring: Rousing music Inspiring, visual accompaniment, Meditative commentary, High-caliber production and a Pre-event L'Chaim & Wine Tasting. What kind of learner are you? Visual? Auditory? Or do you prefer to read and write? Did you know that one of the most profound methods of learning is to experience? Participants at JUDAISM: THE SOUNDTRACK will discover fascinating and fundamental Jewish concepts by embarking on a journey through the world of Jewish song. It will not be a typical informational class. It is experiential, and that is what will make it so unique and unforgettable, transforming your life for the better. Through rousing melodies, captivating videos and visuals, and practical Jewish concepts, this event will be sure to inspire you and those you care about, creating lasting memories with them. This will be a wonderful opportunity to connect to friends and family through an enjoyable and meaningful evening of song, storytelling, and meditation. Although no musical talent required, it’s suggested to come with an open mind, an open heart, and ready to have a great time. Chasidic music is the beat behind the wisdom and inspiration of Chasidic thought. Each piece that we will explore together is packed with nuance, depth, and history that will inform your mind and speak to your heart. It will be an evening of immersive musical experience, featuring Jewish Chasidic melodies, fascinating narratives, and motivational messages brought to Miami by the Michale Ann Russle Jewish Community Center, Chabad Chayil and the acclaimed Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI). Judaism: The Soundtrack will be presented at the Alan & Diane Lieberman Theater in the MAR-JCC in North Miami Beach on Monday, Feb 27, 7:30pm with an option to say l'chaim before the program on some spectacular wines! Participants will discover the enthralling world of Chasidic melody and the deep spiritual meaning behind its tunes. Inspiring visuals, captivating stories, and rousing song will work in harmony with Chasidic wisdom to create a spectacular production that will touch the heartstrings and elevate the spirit. These Chasidic melodies are like no other. They tell a soul-stirring story about life’s purpose and what truly matters in this world. There is so much that can be learned from these moving tunes and I look forward to sharing these transformative teachings with residents of South Florida. Like all JLI programs, this event is designed to appeal to people at all levels of knowledge, including those without any prior experience or background in Jewish learning.
