  • BCT Elevates Its Presence at the Carnival Festival in Broward

BCT Elevates Its Presence at the Carnival Festival in Broward By Rachel Richardson
October 24, 2024 Share Broward County Transit (BCT) is taking to the street this month by engaging thousands of residents during the largest festivals this season. It’s first stops were at Miami Broward Carnival recently held at the Broward County Central Regional Park. At Carnival’s recent J’ouvert celebration, BCT connected with more than six hundred people at the park and the Lauderhill Transit Center nearby. J’ouvert, originating in Trinidad and Tobago, is celebrated across the Caribbean culture and kicks off a series of festivities highlighted by hundreds of revelers, soca music, and, of course, lots of paint. As in years past, eventgoers took a moment to prepare for their “fête” by eating Jamaican patties, ackee and saltfish, doubles, and other nationally recognized Caribbean dishes. BCT employees met eventgoers from across the Caribbean diaspora during this year’s J’ouvert. The event attracted both local and out-of-town visitors and BCT was there to encourage everyone to take BCT to their return destination. “We were excited to increase our presence in the community at one of the county’s signature events,” Broward County Transit Marketing Manager Traci Pollock shared. “It’s a great way to connect with people.” BCT is out this event season actively encouraging the community to jump on board to journey to any of their favorite events. The agency is committed to sharing with eventgoers just how easy and efficient it is to take BCT. With convenient stops all around Broward, eventgoers can easily board a bus with $2 in cash, stop by one of the four transit centers, or simply download the Broward County Transit Mobile app, available in the Google Play and Apple App Store. “Next stop is the Brazilian Music Festival, and after that, Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival,” Pollock cheerfully stated. “We’re committed to increasing our community engagement and look forward to engaging with even more residents!” The Annual Brazilian Festival, which will take place on Saturday, October 26, is estimated to draw nearly 20,000 Brazilian music and culture enthusiasts to Fort Lauderdale Chase Stadium. Eventgoers are encouraged to hop on route 55 and disembark at Commercial Blvd and NW 15 Ave to attend the festival. The Grace Jamaican Festival is on Sunday, November 10, at Miramar Regional Park. Eventgoers can ride on route 28 to Miramar Parkway. • Understanding The Impact: The Effect Of COVID-19 On Cardiovascular Disease

Understanding The Impact: The Effect Of COVID-19 On Cardiovascular Disease By Family Features August 15, 2023 Share Now, more than three years after the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the impacts can be seen more clearly. For example, the rise in the number of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) deaths in 2020, the first year of the COVID-19 Pandemic, represents the largest single-year increase in CVD deaths since 2015 and topped the previous high recorded in 2003, according to the latest available data from the Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics - 2023 Update from the American Heart Association. The biggest increases in CVD-related deaths were seen among Asian, Black and Hispanic people, populations most impacted in the early days of the Pandemic and brought into focus by increasing structural and societal disparities. "We know COVID-19 took a tremendous toll and preliminary data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show there was a substantial increase in the loss of lives from all causes since the start of the Pandemic," said Michelle A. Albert, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, American Heart Association Volunteer President, who is also the Walter A. Haas-Lucie Stern Endowed Chair in Cardiology, a Professor of Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) and Admissions Dean for UCSF Medical School. "That this likely translated to an increase in overall Cardiovascular deaths, while disheartening, is not surprising. In fact, the Association predicted this trend, which is now official. "COVID-19 has both direct and indirect impacts on Cardiovascular health. As we learned, the Virus is associated with new clotting and inflammation. We also know many people who had new or existing Heart Disease and Stroke symptoms were reluctant to seek medical care, particularly in the early days of the Pandemic. This resulted in people presenting with more advanced stages of Cardiovascular conditions and needing more acute or urgent treatment for what may have been manageable chronic conditions. Sadly, this appears to have cost many their lives." According to Albert, who also is the Director of the Center For The Study of Adversity and Cardiovascular Disease (NURTURE Center) at UCSF and a leader in health equity and adversity research, the larger increases in the number of Coronary Heart Disease deaths among Asian, Black and Hispanic adults appear to correlate with the people most often infected with COVID-19. "People from communities of color were among those more highly impacted, especially early on, often due to a disproportionate burden of Cardiovascular Risk factors such as Hypertension and Obesity," Albert said. "Additionally, there are Socioeconomic considerations, as well as the ongoing impact of structural Racism on multiple factors, including limiting the ability to access quality health care." • Give Dad A Day Off This Father's Day: Here Are Basic Steps For An All-Out Blitz Of Fresh-Grilled Flavor

Give Dad A Day Off This Father's Day: Here Are Basic Steps For An All-Out Blitz Of Fresh-Grilled Flavor June 13, 2024 Share A sizzling steak is a surefire sound to make any dad smile, and the flavors achieved from one that's perfectly grilled are hard to match. So before you make reservations at some expensive restaurant to take dad out this Father's Day, wouldn't it be better to fire up the grill and give dad a great steak cooked at home? Great idea, right? Have no fear, if you aren't a grill master like the old man consider these basics for cooking a chef-worthy steak and vegetables your dad is sure to love: Prepare Your Cut Taste preferences (and prices) may differ among Sirloins, Ribeyes, T-Bones and more, but the way you prepare steaks likely won't change much from cut to cut. You'll want to trim the thickness down to 1/2-1 inch for proper cooking, and setting the meat out ahead of time allows it to warm to room temperature before hitting the grill. Placing a refrigerator-cool slab on hot grates works against you in two ways: first, the cold meat instantly chills your previously warm grill, and second, the inner portion of the steak will take longer to grill. Add Some Salt Feel free to add any spices that you prefer, but remember a good steak typically doesn't require fancy seasoning - a pinch of Salt works just fine. Add your Salt anywhere between 30 minutes to a few hours before grilling time to help retain moisture and improve flavor. Aim for High Heat Grilling a steak correctly actually isn't just about maintaining a sweltering flame. A two-zone fire is usually the way to go - one side of the grill should be hot (using direct heat) with the other side not quite as warm (indirect heat). This allows you to create a sear over direct heat before finishing cooking through - without burning - over indirect heat. Sear and Slide Speaking of searing: Cooking your steak over direct heat 1-2 minutes on each side is normally about right for creating a proper sear. At this point, depending on the thickness of your steak, you'll want to check for doneness. If it's not quite to the temperature you're looking to achieve, simply slide it over to the indirect heat for a finishing touch. Keep in mind these general guidelines for doneness: 120-125° F is Rare, 130-135° F is Medium-Rare, 140-145° F is Medium, 150-155° F is Medium-Well and 160-175° F is Well Done. Let It Rest Finally, as hungry as you may be at this point, resting steaks is an important last step before diving in. Giving your steaks 5-10 minutes (foil or no foil) allows flavors to redistribute and moisture to be retained in the meat. Don't Forget The Veggies Now that you've cooked your dad a great steak, now it is the time to make some Veggies. Incorporating tasty Vegetables is very simple once you know the steps. Cooking Peppers, Asparagus, Onions, Tomatoes, and Zucchini is as easy as 1-2-3. Consider these simple steps to properly grill your crispy Veggies: 1. Light the grill. Step one, of course, is to prepare a hot grill. For the best cooking experience, you'll want Medium-High Heat or even High Heat for quick, direct grilling. By lighting the grill ahead of Veggie preperation, you'll allow plenty of heating time to complete your other tasks. 2. Prepare Vegetables. Depending on what you plan to cook, there'll likely be some preparation to undertake, such as cutting off stems and blemishes or removing pits and seeds. In addition to cleaning up your ingredients, you may want to chop, dice or slice based on the recipe. 3. Coat Vegetables with Olive Oil. Drizzling just a small amount of Olive Oil over your Vegetables and tossing to coat adds a couple benefits. First, it helps the outer layer crisp rather than dry out, plus it aids in seasonings - like Salt and Pepper - sticking to the Vegetable instead of falling off while on the grill or in a pan. 4. Consider using foil packets or skewers. If char marks aren't your thing, tossing chopped or diced Veggies into a foil packet before hitting the grill steams them for a bit of a softer texture. Alternatively, wooden skewers soaked in water (to prevent burning) can help keep smaller chunks of Veggies from slipping through the grill grates while still achieving a crispy exterior. 5. Pay attention to grill times. Different types of Vegetables and preparation methods call for different cooking times, but 5-10 minutes over direct heat generally gets the job done. The smaller you chunk, chop, slice or dice, the less time it'll take. Find more grilling tips, at: www.Culinary.net < Previous News Next News >

  • We The Targeted: How The Government Weaponizes Surveillance To Silence Its Critics

We The Targeted: How The Government Weaponizes Surveillance To Silence Its Critics By John & Nisha Whitehead September 7, 2023 Share Ever since Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his groundbreaking “I Have A Dream” Speech during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28th, 1963, the Deep State has been hard at work turning King’s dream into a living nightmare. The end result of the government’s efforts over the past 60 years is a country where nothing ever really changes, and everyone lives in fear. Race wars are still being stoked by both the Right and the Left; the military-industrial complex is still waging profit-driven wars at taxpayer expense; the oligarchy is still calling the shots in the seats of government power; and the government is still weaponizing surveillance in order to muzzle anti-government sentiment, harass activists, and terrorize Americans into compliance. This last point is particularly disturbing. Starting in the 1950's, the government relied on COINTELPRO, its domestic intelligence program, to neutralize domestic political dissidents. Those targeted by the FBI under COINTELPRO for its intimidation, surveillance and smear campaigns included: Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X, the Black Panther Party, John Lennon, Billie Holiday, Emma Goldman, Aretha Franklin, Charlie Chaplin, Ernest Hemingway, Felix Frankfurter, and hundreds more. In more recent decades, the powers-that-be have expanded their reach to target anyone who opposes the Police State, regardless of their political leanings. Advances in technology have enabled the government to deploy a veritable arsenal of surveillance weapons in order to “expose, disrupt, misdirect, discredit, or otherwise neutralize” perceived threats to the government’s power. What this adds up to is a world in which, on any given day, the average person is now monitored, surveilled, spied on and tracked in more than 20 different ways by both government and corporate eyes and ears. Consider just a small sampling of the ways in which the government is weaponizing its 360 degree surveillance technologies to flag you as a threat to national security, whether or not you’ve done anything wrong. Flagging you as a danger based on your feelings. Customs and Border Protection is reportedly using an artificial intelligence surveillance program that can detect “sentiment and emotion” in social media posts in order to identify travelers who may be “a threat to public safety, national security, or lawful trade and travel.” Flagging you as a danger based on your phone and movements. Cell phones have become de facto snitches, offering up a steady stream of digital location data on users’ movements and travels. Flagging you as a danger based on your DNA. By accessing your DNA, the government will soon know everything else about you that they don’t already know: your family chart, your ancestry, what you look like, your health history, your inclination to follow orders or chart your own course, etc. Flagging you as a danger based on your face. Facial recognition software aims to create a society in which every individual who steps out into public is tracked and recorded as they go about their daily business. Flagging you as a danger based on your behavior. Rapid advances in behavioral surveillance are not only making it possible for individuals to be monitored and tracked based on their patterns of movement or behavior, including gait recognition (the way one walks), but have given rise to whole industries that revolve around predicting one’s behavior based on data and surveillance patterns and are also shaping the behaviors of whole populations. Flagging you as a danger based on your spending and consumer activities. With every dollar we spend, we’re helping Corporate America build a dossier for its government counterparts on who we know, what we think, how we spend our money, and how we spend our time. Flagging you as a danger based on your public activities. Private corporations in conjunction with police agencies throughout the country have created a web of surveillance that encompasses all major cities in order to monitor large groups of people seamlessly, as in the case of protests and rallies. Flagging you as a danger based on your social media activities. As The Intercept reported, the FBI, CIA, NSA and other government agencies are increasingly investing in and relying on corporate surveillance technologies that can mine constitutionally protected speech on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram in order to identify potential extremists and predict who might engage in future acts of anti-government behavior. Flagging you as a danger based on your social network. Not content to merely spy on individuals through their online activity, government agencies are now using surveillance technology to track one’s social network, the people you might connect with by phone, text message, email or through social message, in order to ferret out possible criminals. Flagging you as a danger based on your car. License plate readers are mass surveillance tools that can photograph over 1,800 license tag numbers per minute, take a picture of every passing license tag number and store the tag number and the date, time, and location of the picture in a searchable database, then share the data with law enforcement, fusion centers and private companies to track the movements of persons in their cars. Flagging you as a danger based on your political views. The Church Committee, the Senate task force charged with investigating COINTELPRO abuses in 1975, concluded that the government had carried out “secret surveillance of citizens on the basis of their political beliefs, even when those beliefs posed no threat of violence or illegal acts on behalf of a hostile foreign power.” The report continued: “Groups and individuals have been harassed and disrupted because of their political views and their lifestyles… Intelligence agencies have served the political and personal objectives of presidents and other high officials.” Nothing has changed since then. Now the government wants us to believe that we have nothing to fear from these mass spying programs as long as we’ve done nothing wrong. Don’t believe it. The government’s definition of a “bad” guy is extraordinarily broad, and it results in the warrantless surveillance of innocent, law-abiding Americans on a staggering scale. Moreover, there is a repressive, suppressive effect to surveillance that not only acts as a potentially small deterrent on crime but serves to monitor and chill lawful First Amendment activity, and that is the whole point. Weaponized surveillance is re-engineering a society structured around the aesthetic of fear. As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, the police state wants us silent, servile and compliant. From Screen To Spoon - How Your Phone Can Turn You Into A Master Chef By BPT Jul 10, 2025 Make Your Smartphone A Secret Weapon For Mastering Your Favorite Recipes Using Apps, Connected Gadgets, AI And More. In a world where your phone is as essential as a chef's knife, the latest devices and technology can help you up-level your cooking skills. From trying quirky viral recipes to using Artificial Intelligence (AI) all while connected to America's largest and fastest 5G network, here are eight ways your device can become your new sous-chef - on top of being your own personal assistant. Learn from the pros Sign up for virtual cooking classes or workshops to sharpen your skills and learn new recipes. Many professional chefs and culinary schools offer a mix of increasingly popular live streamed or pre-recorded online courses that you can follow from the comfort of your kitchen. Now trending As a culinary playground, the internet also serves up tons of viral recipes such as shrimp sushi bake cups and bubble potato pillows. Cooking recipes are the most popular form of influencer-created social media content, according to a 2024 Report from Snap and IPG Magna. They're as much about fun as they are about the failures (anyone remember raindrop cakes?), so don't be afraid to grab your apron, fire up your phone and get ready to cook (and maybe giggle) your way through the latest internet food fads. Tasty apps Cooking apps are like having a tech-savvy sous-chef who gives you recipe ideas and always knows the right measurements. These apps not only help you get the ratios right but also remind you when to preheat the oven - because who hasn't forgotten that step? Not sure where to start? Listen to a pro: Model and influencer Chrissy Teigen, who is also a best-selling cookbook author, food TV host and owner of a cookware line, says her go-to apps are New York Times Cooking, America's Test Kitchen and Tasty. If you're juggling apps while multitasking pans and chopping onions, the new Samsung Galaxy S25 lineup has got your back with cross-action apps. With this function, Google Gemini acts as your personal assistant, letting you knock out multiple tasks with one task. It's all about multitasking like a Michelin-star chef. High tech for low pressure Samsung's Galaxy AI, available on the entire S25 lineup, can give you recipe ideas based on what you currently have in your kitchen. Just snap a photo of your fridge or pantry, and Galaxy AI will analyze the ingredients, suggest recipes and give you step-by-step instructions. Cool, right? And get this - if you find a picture of a beautiful food plate online, Samsung's updated Circle to Search lets you find the source and even recipes so you can recreate it at home. All it takes is one press and hold and then circling what you'd like to look up. Plus, Galaxy AI lets you easily translate content - like webpages and live phone calls - from different languages. So why not binge on everything from bagels to beignets? Pump up the jams Want to set the mood for a legendary culinary concert? Spotify and other streaming platforms can easily suggest a playlist that might just help you make magic. Or, if you prefer podcasts, press play on your favorite foodie show for some culinary inspiration. Get the perfect pic Got your masterpiece? Time to show it off - you've earned it. Taking pictures of your dishes can turn your kitchen into a mini food photo studio, and all you need is the latest mobile device to do it right. There's a reason influencers like to say the phone eats first: #Food is the most popular hashtag on Instagram, with more than 250 million posts on the platform. Pro tip: The Samsung Galaxy S25 phones can spoon-feed you a great photo with portrait-mode shots that rival high-end cameras, adjusting the camera settings for the ideal exposure and clarity, sharpening details and boosting colors after the shot. The Night Video with Audio Eraser feature captures content in vibrant detail, even in low light if you're cooking for a romantic candlelit dinner, and minimizes unwanted sounds. Plus, get love from your family and friends on your latest kitchen concoctions with RCS messaging, which now allows you to send high-resolution photos and videos more easily across platforms. Know when to order in All great chefs have a backup plan, and takeout from delivery apps can go a long way to saving a dinner party. With online food delivery revenues cooking up an estimated $350 billion in the U.S. in 2024, it's clear you're not alone, so don't sweat it if your recipe doesn't work. To make your cooking journey truly delicious, don't forget to explore Samsung's Galaxy S25 lineup. Bon appétit!
