  • RSV Vaccines - What Older Adults Need to Know

RSV Vaccines - What Older Adults Need to Know October 24, 2024 Share Even though cooler days may seem far off, now is the best time to plan ahead for a healthy winter. One common respiratory illness, respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms, but it can be severe and even deadly for older people. "As we grow older, our immune systems do not work as well and we are more likely to have chronic conditions, which means we are at increased risk of getting very sick from common viruses as we age," said Alison Barkoff, who leads the Administration for Community Living within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. "Getting vaccinated is the best protection against fall respiratory viruses like RSV. It can help keep symptoms mild and help keep people out of the hospital." Here's what older Americans need to know about RSV and vaccines this fall, according to the Risk Less. Do More. Public Education Campaign. Prevention is key. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone 75 years and older get an RSV vaccine. Also, people between 60-74 should get vaccinated if they have conditions such as heart or lung disease, diabetes, obesity or a weakened immune system. The vaccine cuts the risk of hospitalization from RSV by at least half. People living in nursing homes, assisted living or other long-term care facilities are at even higher risk. There are many people living together in these facilities who have medical conditions that make them more likely to get very sick. While vaccines may not always stop infection, they can prevent severe illness. So, vaccination is very important for residents of long-term care facilities. RSV vaccines are available. Three RSV vaccines have been approved for older adults by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. You only need a single dose that you can get at any time of the year, but getting the vaccine in the early fall offers the best protection for the late fall and winter, when RSV usually peaks. Getting the vaccine early gives your immune system enough time to build up protection. RSV vaccines are the best protection. The RSV vaccines have gone through extensive testing. Last year, more than 20 million older adults were vaccinated safely. Mild side effects, such as pain, redness or swelling at the injection site sometimes happen, but they usually go away on their own in a few days. Serious allergic reactions from RSV vaccines are rare. Prevention is the best option. Respiratory virus vaccines, including RSV vaccines, can help protect older adults from serious illness. • "A Life Of The Party": The Radical Journey Of Amy Schechter | sun-times

"A Life Of The Party": The Radical Journey Of Amy Schechter Jewish Connection News Aug 15, 2025 What Propelled The Daughter Of A Renowned Jewish Scholar To Join A Movement On The Fringe Of American Society? In A New Book, "A Life Of The Party," Journalist Dave Schechter Delves Into The Story Of His Great-Aunt, Who Made Communism Her Way To Repair The World. An FBI informant labeled Amy Schechter “a regular ten-minute egg” (as in hard-boiled). The New York Times called her “one of the most ardent among the New York radicals.” A Jewish columnist wrote that she was “one of the few genuinely idealistic Communists; she lives up to her ideals in her private life, sharing what she has with others less fortunate.” The youngest of Solomon and Mathilde Roth Schechter's three children was born in England, educated in the United States and, as a member of the Communist Party, devoted more than four decades, beginning in the early 1920s, to the struggles of working men and women. "A Life of the Party" blends the historical record with narrative fiction fitting Amy Schechter's life and times. Amy's adventures took her to Russia — to a little-known colony of American Communists in Siberia and to the International Lenin School in Moscow — and across the United States, from coal fields and textile mills to docks and shipyards. Amy reported on labor issues for Communist newspapers and other sympathetic publications. Her own name appeared in headlines and articles during the 1929 Loray Mill strike in Gastonia, North Carolina — one of the most violent of its time — where she was an organizer and one of 16 defendants tried for murder when the police chief was shot to death. "Under different circumstances, as a Jew visiting from out of town, Amy likely would have received an invitation to a Passover Seder the night of April 24, 1929. Instead, she was released from jail that morning after her second arrest in two days after deliberately violating the city’s new ban on parading," Schechter writes. It's also likely that the Jews who owned mills near Gastonia would not have wanted Amy at their table. The book project began in 1999, with a letter that Schechter's father received from an expert on Soviet activities in the United States, asking about a man with whom Amy had a relationship. Along with the letter came three pages of a heavily-redacted FBI report. That piqued Schechter's interest. His research included using the Freedom of Information Act to obtain hundreds of pages of FBI reports. A CNN colleague in Moscow unearthed a document from Soviet archives. Schechter combed through articles that reported on Amy's activities and read dozens that she wrote. He had enlightening conversations with two 88-year-old comrades who had their own memories of Amy. “Were she around today, I have no doubt that Amy would have supported the current labor struggles and racial justice protests,” Schechter says. “History may not have been kind to the Communists, but in Amy’s time the Communists often were at the forefront in calling attention to economic and social inequities in the United States, and in organizing people for change.” Dave Schechter's journalism career has extended from a daily newspaper and local television stations to the Cable News Network bureau in Jerusalem, and 26-plus years on CNN's national news desk. As a freelance writer for the past 11 years, he has been honored with Rockower Awards from the American Jewish Press Association. Dave lives in Atlanta with his wife, journalist and children’s book author Audrey Galex. They are the parents of three adult children and cater to two grand-dogs. Nowhere Is Their Impact More Evident Than In The Hospitality Industry, Where Women Have Long Been At The Forefront—Revolutionizing Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management, And Guest Experiences. From the legendary Alice Waters, who pioneered the farm-to-table movement, to industry powerhouses like Arne Sorenson, who championed diversity in leadership, women have transformed the way we dine, travel, and experience hospitality. Yet, their contributions often go unrecognized. This month, we celebrate the chefs, hoteliers, entrepreneurs, and innovators whose passion and perseverance continue to redefine the industry. Whether it’s Dominique Crenn earning her place as the first female chef in the U.S. with three Michelin stars, or visionary hotel executives paving the way for a more inclusive future, their stories inspire the next generation of hospitality leaders. Join us as we honor four extraordinary Miami women, spotlight their achievements, and recognize their undeniable influence on an industry built on warmth, service, and innovation. Because when women rise, so does hospitality. Eileen Andrade, Amelia’s 1931, Miami: Eileen Andrade, a renowned Miami chef, traces her culinary roots to Islas Canarias, her family’s iconic Cuban restaurant. From a young age, she immersed herself in the kitchen, cultivating a passion for gastronomy. Venturing out with her brother, she launched the Cuban Cube food truck which gained rapid popularity. A transformative trip to South Korea in 2013 exposed Andrade to new flavors, reshaping her approach to cooking. This journey laid the foundation for her restaurant, Finka Table & Tap, which opened in 2014, blending Korean and Cuban influences. The restaurant quickly became a hit, marking the beginning of Andrade’s ascent in Miami’s culinary scene. In 2017, Andrade introduced Amelia’s 1931, a cozy diner paying homage to her grandmother. Media acclaim prompted further expansion, leading to Barbakoa by Finka in Doral, blending Cuban, Korean and Peruvian cuisines. In 2023, Andrade transformed Amelia’s 1931, expanding its footprint and reinventing its concept. The redesigned space, with a speakeasy vibe and chic aesthetic, features a new menu and signature cocktails. The restaurant’s success reinforces Andrade’s status as a rising star in Miami’s culinary landscape. Andrea Moreno, Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival presented by Capital One: A Miami native, Andrea Moreno, PR and Marketing Director of South Beach Wine and Food Festival is a graduate of FIU School of Hospitality and Management and a driving force behind that Festival’s well-earned reputation as one of the most popular, largest and most successful food & wine fundraisers in the country. Her role as a Director at the Festival seemed preordained as she started her career as a Public Relations intern at Brustman Carrino Public Relations, which oversees the public relations for the Festival. The diehard Panther (FIU alumnus) and talented publicist quickly rose up the ranks not just becoming an Account Executive at the agency, overseeing all manner of food & beverage-centric accounts but taking lead on the Festival account. Her blend of genuine enthusiasm, strategic smarts, positive attitude and drive for success made her both a valuable member of the BCPR team but the ideal candidate to head such a challenging and multi-layered campaign. In 2020, as the Festival – and the world at large – prepared for its post-COVID-19 incarnation Andrea was able to transition seamlessly in house at the Festival and make it her complete professional focus. During her time the Festival has not just survived but thrived, enjoying record-breaking attendance, ticket sales and most importantly, raised millions of dollars for its beneficiary, the FIU School of Hospitality Management. Luciana Giangrandi, Boia De and Walrus Rodeo, Miami: Luciana, Co-Chef and Owner of Miami Michelin Award One Star restaurant Boia De and Chef/Partner in Walrus Rodeo, is a Miami native who earned her culinary stripes elsewhere before returning to the Magic City to open a restaurant in her hometown. Bringing her career full circle, Luciana returned to Miami with now husband Alex Meyer and together they opened La Pollita; a beloved Mexican food truck formerly stationed in Miami Midtown Garden Center before its final outpost in the Design District. In June 2019, the two closed up the taco shop and opened Boia De, a 24-seat restaurant and bar in a strip mall in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood. From day one, Alex Meyer and Luciana Giangrandi set out to create a welcoming and inclusive environment; more than 50 percent of the restaurant staff identifies as female, 35% BIPOC, and top-level management is 70% female. Creating a safe, positive space has attracted talented minorities, members of the LGBTQ+ Community and allies of these communities. Luci works hard to create a positive environment based on respect where staff is encouraged to excel, share ideas and subsequently develop a sense of ownership in the restaurants. At the root of it all is passion; that is what is responsible for turning a 900-square-foot space with no storage, or room for a “real” kitchen into a Michelin-starred, nationally renowned restaurant. But it’s the passion for the team and their well-being that inspires everyone on staff to excel that translates into an incredible restaurant experience. Boia De has held its Michelin Star for two years now and has been a semi-finalist for a James Beard Award. Gina Genna, InterContinental Miami: A consummate hospitality professional with dedication to service and attention to detail as her north stars, Gina Genna is the marketing and communications powerhouse at the iconic InterContinental Miami Hotel. With the property for close to five years, her overarching goal as its Director of Marketing is to both further cement its well-earned reputation as a conference and business property but also as a premier destination for lifestyle travel. In short, helping redefine the hotel’s image as both a commercial, luxury and urban lifestyle resort. Her day to day revolves around building and executing the branding, communications and marketing for the hotel while overseeing Social Media, public relations, web, digital and reputation management channels. As she prepares for a new season and new opportunities at the hotel, she looks ahead to her 22nd Anniversary in the marketing and communications field. Fashion Meets Function - Red Light Therapy Revolutionizing Wearable Beauty Tech By Merliee Kern, MBA Dec 10, 2025 In The Ever-Evolving Intersection Of Fashion And Technology, Few Innovations Have Made As Seamless—And As Stylish—A Leap Into The Beauty Space As LED Light Therapy. Once Confined To Dermatologists' Offices And Elite Medspas, This Skin-Rejuvenating Science Is Now Making Its Way Into Homes And Fashion-Forward Wellness Routines Thanks To Companies: https://ledesthetics.com/pages/clinical-studies. Their Suite Of FDA-Cleared, Clinical-Grade Devices Doesn’t Just Bring Professional-Level Skincare Home—It Redefines What Wearable Beauty Technology Can Look And Feel Like. The Rise of Smart Skincare in Style Wearable tech has long been a fixture in the fitness world, but beauty wearables have historically lagged behind—either lacking in aesthetic appeal or falling short on efficacy. LED Esthetics changes that narrative by offering science-backed devices that pair luxurious design with cutting-edge performance. Think: sleek, wireless, skin-hugging gear that wouldn’t look out of place on a high-fashion runway—if the runway doubled as a wellness spa. Their hero product, the Glotech Mask Pro, is a standout in this new category of fashion-conscious wellness wearables. Designed to contour the face like a second skin, this mask utilizes red, blue and near-infrared light to target everything from fine lines and acne to dullness and sun damage. It’s a bold visual statement and a high-performance skincare tool all in one, making it as functional as it is photogenic. From Face to Decolletage—The New Era of Skincare Real Estate Beauty trends have long favored facial skincare, but LED Esthetics is pushing the boundaries of where wearable skincare begins and ends. The Glotech Collar is a perfect example—a red and near-infrared light therapy device that targets the often-overlooked neck and decolletage area. It fits comfortably and elegantly around the neck, delivering 10-minute treatments that help tighten skin, reduce sun spots, and boost collagen. In an age where Zoom neck and screen fatigue are very real aesthetic concerns, the Glotech Collar provides a futuristic yet practical solution—one that blends seamlessly into a high-end self-care routine. Just like a designer scarf or a signature necklace, the Glotech Collar repositions the neck area as a new frontier in both skincare and personal style. Hair Growth Meets Headwear: A Discreet Power Move The innovation doesn’t stop at skin. LED Esthetics has also brought red light therapy into the world of hair restoration with the Glotech Hair Pro—a foldable light panel that fits discreetly inside any hat. This product exemplifies the fusion of fashion and function: it’s wearable, invisible under your favorite cap, and offers powerful hair growth stimulation with just 10 minutes of daily use. Unlike clunky laser helmets or chemical-based hair serums, the Hair Pro is a subtle, design-savvy solution that caters to the modern multitasker. The Fashion of Wellness What LED Esthetics is really offering is more than just technology—it’s a lifestyle shift. Their devices represent a new generation of beauty accessories: functional, wearable, and rooted in scientific credibility. With their elegant form factors, wireless convenience and dermatologist-approved results, these pieces are bridging the gap between aesthetic and aesthetics. Whether draped around the neck like a tech-enhanced statement piece or hidden discreetly in a ball cap during your morning walk, each device elevates routine skincare into a fashion-forward ritual. It’s beauty that fits your wardrobe, your schedule, and your standards. The Future is Bright—and Red As the fashion industry continues to explore functional couture and self-care technology, companies like LED Esthetics are leading the charge. Their mission is clear: to democratize the power of clinical-grade skincare and hair care, while honoring the elegance and individuality of each user. And in doing so, they’re not just illuminating faces—they’re shining a light on the future of wearable beauty. With LED Esthetics, you don’t have to choose between results and refinement. This is skincare that wears well, in every sense of the word. • State Of The City Of Hallandale Beach, Part 8 | sun-times

State Of The City Of Hallandale Beach, Part 8 By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper Jul 23, 2025 Both Safe Neighborhood Districts Are Looking To Enhance Safety And Security. The Three Islands Plan Has Been Approved, Just This Past Month We Have Established A Funding Plan To Pay For Over $4.2 Million In Roadway Safety Improvements. We are applying for a loan to be paid back over five years. Every property owner will pay a yearly flat assessment. There is an exemption provision for those currently on the tax roll listed for disabilities, Veterans, and homestead seniors, 65 with limited incomes. Construction should begin within the year so long as the underground improvements are completed. The lift station project on Parkview will not delay the construction as it is not directly done in the right way. Golden Isles will be planning for over $15 Million in improvements. We will be addressing that financing in the coming months. There is still major underground work for Holiday Drive so improvement will begin after that project. We are planning to replace all the guard arms due to damage and age. Operational changes at the guardhouse were adopted to enhance security after extensive research by our City Attorney. All visitors entering the guard gate will need to produce IDs. This will address residential concerns over recent car thefts and attempted thefts. While the Business Survey is underway some results have come in and it is no surprise Traffic has remained a top issue for business as well as residents. Since I have owned property and moved to Florida full time. I hear people complaining about traffic. Traffic congestion is a huge reality in South Florida. We are the fifth ranked area for traffic congestion according to U.S. World Reports, we have joined Chicago and others to being above the Pre-COVID-19 Pandemic numbers. So, what really can be done about traffic? Even if we had all the money to complete the $75 Million dollars worth of road projects, we like all communities, will not rid society of rush hour. We certainly can and will not stop trying to improve traffic flow and congestion, but there is not one silver bullet. We have conducted traffic studies over the years and are now in partnership with the Metropolitan Planning Organization to conduct an updated survey. As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place on my Phone/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or you can email me at: jcooper@cohb.org .
