  • Kosher Family Lounge Opens

Kosher Family Lounge Opens October 16, 2024 Share Jewish families committed to keeping a Kosher Diet now have space to store, prepare, and eat food at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, thanks to the generosity of local donors that contributed to make the area a reality. Donations by Ben J. and Dorit Genet, Avi and Debra Naider, Healing Hearts, and the Jewish Federation of Broward County established the Kosher Family Lounge, an area that also includes space for prayer and relaxation. Healing Hearts, a NonProfit Organization that helps families during times of medical crisis, will stock the lounge with refrigerated and frozen meals, snacks, hot and cold drinks, prayer books, and reading materials. While patients who keep Kosher have always been able to get meals that meet their dietary needs, the same hasn’t always been true for families that are sometimes at the hospital for extended periods of time. “The Kosher Lounge will be a healing space for a parent that just needs a breather while caring for a child being treated at Joe DiMaggio,” said Rabbi Yochanon Klein, Founder of Healing Hearts. The Hollywood-based, pediatric facility serves children and families in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, home to one of the country’s largest Jewish populations. In a recent two-year period, it is estimated that as many as 7,000 patients who identified themselves as Jewish were treated at the children’s hospital. “This is a special place for both the Jewish community and our hospital family, and I thank the donors for their commitment to this effort,” said Sharon Truske, Director of Major Gifts at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation, at the ribbon-cutting event. “While we have lots of family space in the hospital, this is the first permanent area dedicated to observant Jewish families with specific dietary needs.” While the Kosher Family Lounge is the first space of its kind within Memorial Healthcare System, it won’t be the last. Another room currently under construction at Memorial Regional Hospital will serve families of adult patients. That room is being funded by Avi and Debra Naider, Healing Hearts, Bikur Cholim of Hollywood, and the Jewish Federation of Broward County. “It’s often the little things that create the biggest impact,” said Keith Goldmann, Chief Philanthropy Officer at the Jewish Federation of Broward County. “Ensuring Jewish families have a Kosher space where they feel supported while they are caring for their loved ones in the hospital is incredibly important to us.” Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is one of the nation’s leading pediatric hospitals, offering a comprehensive scope of healthcare services and programs in a caring, compassionate setting designed specifically for children. A Level One Trauma Center that is part of the Hollywood-based Memorial Healthcare System, it combines advanced technology, the expertise of board-certified specialists, and a patient and family-centered approach to heal the body, mind, and spirit. The hospital’s NonProfit Foundation focuses on philanthropy to positively impact patients, families, and underwrite programs, facilities, and equipment that support the pediatric facility’s mission. The program is designed to not only inspire and encourage participants to stick with the effort and reach their weight loss goals (via any method of their choice) and be financially rewarded in kind, but also simultaneously experience a transformative journey that goes beyond dieting; one incorporating a more holistic lifestyle shift improving nutrition, fitness and mental well-being overall for the long-run. Having paid out more than $68 Million cash rewards for a collective 4+ million pounds lost since launching in 2009, HealthyWage has maintained its position as the world’s leading purveyor of money-driven diet contests and challenges for individuals, teams and corporate wellness groups. The company’s extensive track record of inspiring success is exemplified by throngs of Success Stories showcasing both women and men who’ve achieved life-changing transformations through HealthyWage Challenges—many with weight loss excess of 100 pounds and winnings over $10,000. A Body Positivity Approach to Weight Loss Unlike traditional weight loss initiatives that focus solely on the scale, HealthyWage’s challenge is rooted in body positivity. The campaign emphasizes self-acceptance, body care and personal transformation. It’s designed to inspire participants to prioritize self-care, celebrate their bodies, and invest in their overall well-being. "The Love Your Body Challenge” is about more than just shedding pounds; it promotes self-acceptance and celebrates diversity in all body shapes and sizes," said David Roddenberry, HealthyWage Co-Founder "It’s also about embracing the weight-loss journey, practicing self-care and recognizing the strength and beauty within at every stage the process. This challenge aligns with numerous 2024 studies highlighting the importance of body positivity and mental health, including research finding that taking breaks from social media can significantly enhance self-esteem and body image. Other study findings confirmed that exposure to body-positive imagery boosts satisfaction and reduces weight concerns. We embrace these mindsets and practices, which can reduce angst during one’s weight-loss journey and make the experience over much more joyful…not to mention lucrative.” Challenge Details The "$10,000 Love Your Body Weight Loss Challenge" is completely free to join and is entirely funded by HealthyWage, itself. Participants have 40 days, from January 6th, 2025 to February 14th, 2025 to lose 4% of their individual body weight. Those who achieve this goal will equally split the $10,000 Prize Pot. To keep participants motivated, HealthyWage will host weekly online activities, including fitness tips, nutrition guidance, and mental health exercises like journaling and meditation. Weekly swag giveaways will provide additional opportunities for participants to win prizes and stay on track. Participants can quickly and easily register to partake in this challenge online at: https://www.healthywage.com/fastrack/free-10000-challenge/ Upping the Ante with the ‘HealthyWager’ In addition to the group challenge, HealthyWage also offers the HealthyWager Challenge—a customizable weight loss program that allows individuals to set personal weight loss goals and bet on their success—all using parameters they set for themselves. Participants can win up to $10,000 for achieving their targets. HealthyWage is founded on substantive research and "double-incentivization" methodology that proves competition and rewards—especially the cash variety—can as much as triple the effectiveness of weight loss programs. And, the proof is in the performance in the form of quantifiable and undeniable metrics that behavioral economics-based gamification works when it comes to weight loss. “Studies continue to show that monetary incentives serve to enhance the effectiveness of, and duly complement, weight-loss programs of any and all sorts, especially when paid out quickly like our various programs,” said Roddenberry. “The average HealthyWager participant more than doubles their investment if they are successful at achieving their goal. The financial upside potential is impressive.” So effective is this diet gamification method, famous personalities have joined HealthyWage in the fight to get America fit including global health and fitness expert Jillian Michaels, as well as actress and talk show host Sherri Shepherd, to name a few. About HealthyWage™ Industry-leading health and wellness purveyor HealthyWage provides cash incentives, social and expert-based support, tools and resources, and goal-setting and tracking technologies to address our nation’s obesity epidemic and improve America’s collective health. HealthyWage is at the forefront of the weight wagering movement, having formally created competitive, cash-fueled programs for more than 90 Fortune 500 and other companies, hospitals, health systems, insurers, school systems, municipal governments and other organizations throughout the U.S., and their program has been more informally run at more than 3,000 companies and organizations. The company was founded in response to academic research that proves even small cash rewards triple the effectiveness of weight-loss programs; that people are more effective at losing weight when their own money is at risk; and that social networks play a large role in the spread of obesity, and will likely play a large role in reversing obesity. • Resume Rejections: Expert Warns That Florida Job Candidates Are Sabotaging Their Careers By Using AI

Resume Rejections: Expert Warns That Florida Job Candidates Are Sabotaging Their Careers By Using AI September 12, 2024 Share In today’s competitive job market, it’s almost expected that candidates will rely on AI Chatbots to craft their resumés and cover letters. Yet, despite the widespread adoption of tools like ChatGPT, AI might actually be a stumbling block in securing that crucial job offer. That is according to the experts at: https://Resume.io/ - who commissioned a survey of 3,000 hiring managers. The survey revealed that over one-half (51%) of Florida managers automatically dismiss resumes created using AI. “AI-generated content often contains tell-tale signs, such as overly polished or excessively detailed cover letters, and HR professionals now have access to sophisticated tools that easily identify such content,” says Resume.io Career Expert, Amanda Augustine. Beyond the immediate rejection risk, the survey unveiled deeper concerns among hiring managers. A significant 78% of managers stated that they would prefer to receive a poorly written but authentic resume over a perfectly written, yet disingenuous, AI-generated one. “Authenticity in job applications is more valued than perfection,” Augustine adds. “Employers are looking for genuine candidates, not just flawless prose.” Interestingly, when asked for advice on using AI tools for resume creation, 31% of managers recommend that candidates heavily customize AI-generated content if they choose to use it. Another 22% suggested using AI as a starting point and then seeking professional help. Only 21% of managers were in favor of fully embracing AI tools to create resumes. “The consensus is clear: If you’re going to use AI, you need to make it your own. The human touch is irreplaceable,” Augustine advises. Ethical concerns surrounding AI in resume creation were also brought to light. Nearly half (46%) of Florida respondents believed that AI could misrepresent a candidate’s true skills, while 24% felt it creates unfair advantages. “There’s a growing unease about how AI might be distorting the hiring process, leading to misalignments between a candidate's actual abilities and their AI-enhanced presentation,” says Augustine. Furthermore, the survey revealed that 62% of managers believe companies should implement policies requiring candidates to disclose if their resume was AI-generated. “Transparency is key,” Augustine emphasizes. “Candidates need to be upfront about their use of AI, and employers need to set clear expectations.” < Previous News Next News >

  • Rain Rain & More Rain: Historic Flooding Across South Florida

Rain Rain & More Rain: Historic Flooding Across South Florida By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper April 20, 2023 Share I am hopeful that since last week many of our readers have been getting back to normal. To those that have lost homes and property my prayers are with you. Our staff has been working around the clock to help our residents and the City recover. I want to extend my gratitude to City Manager Dr. Earle, Director of Public Works Jeff Odoms, Chief Michel Michel, the entire Hallandale Beach Police Department, BSO and our entire City Staff who have worked during this storm. I also want to thank the many residents who took it upon themselves to chip in and help. Many helped their neighbors and many also helped clear drains of debris and clean up. There is plenty to cover and many news outlets have done a great job trying to explain what took place in terms of meteorology. I particularly enjoyed Suzannah Bryan of the Sun Sentinel who wrote about our drainage woes. I encourage readers to look it up online. I will be writing about this event in relation to our City in my next two articles. Wednesday the calls and emails started. As the day went on we knew that something was different with the rain. By 10:00 p.m. I was asking Dr. Earle why a State Of Emergency was not being called. Thursday morning, I asked again if we could declare one. At that time, it was discussed the confusion created by the Governors new Legislation due to COVID-19 handcuffing Local Governments for declaring Emergency. It turned out that Broward County was caught off guard. The County Administrator was out of the country on business. The Assistant Administrator was at a conference and communication slowed. By Thursday, the State and County finally declared a State Of Emergency. Without it people simply were going about their busy lives while the disaster played out. I have lived in South Florida full time for over 31 years. My first experience with heavy rain was the September after Hurricane Andrew. It had rained all night long. Coming from the Northeast I was getting genuinely concerned as that water was halfway up our front yard. I called my new neighbor and asked if school was going to be canceled. I joked, “Is this a Florida Snow Day?” By 8:00 a.m. the school had been closed. That afternoon her husband told me about the rains he had seen growing up in Hollywood as a young child. He remembered the biggest was when the area flooded all of the way to Federal Highway. That rain he said was something and quite scary. We sadly all know now that feeling. The last heavy rain in 2009 set me in motion. Like many of the calls received last week. There was what the meteorologist called a microburst. I forget the exact amount of rain. Once again 14th, 12th and 10th Avenues between East Hallandale Beach Boulevard and Atlantic Shores Boulevard had almost three feet of water in some areas. I vividly remember walking down 14th speaking with the County Administrator and then Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz saying, “We really need your help. Not just with FEMA but with the Infrastructure." The City did have a project in our 5 year plan to replace the drains that were connected to the Intracoastal on Desoto Park. The systems servicing that area at the time were gravity drains. With Sea Level Rise and tides this system virtually stops. In some cases, if the valve at the outlets stick they back up into the streets. Either way we had to do something different. The County put in place a requirement to put Stormwater down into the Aquifer. It was vital to protect our area. We worked with our Congresswoman and lobbied FEMA for originally $10 Million Dollars to pay for this massive undertaking. The residents that lived through the dirt and mess for almost 2 years know all so well how impactful these projects are with their day to day lives. That project expanded into a $20 Million Grant plus Millions of Dollars of Local match to install pumps in the Northeast and Southwest Quadrants. The Northeast Project did not go all of the way to Federal Highway or Atlantic Boulevard. There has always been a goal to do Phase 2. Due to different changes in the Commission and Administrative Instability, no large project was completed. We are now implementing many Infrastructure Projects. Phase 2 has not been added as of this date since we needed to focus on our Water Supply and Water Breaks. Ironically, we were approached by the City of Hollywood as they are looking at improving the Moffett Street Pumping System, more on that later. Before going into engineering and expectations I need to address the bigger elephant in the room. These projects are extremely expensive. For example, when we set out to build 14th Avenue the Twenty Million Dollar Price Tag was one fifth of the Annual Budget. If it was not for the other Government Agencies stepping up the cost burden would have been solely on the back of our taxpayers. Even with the outside help we needed to increase Fees for Water and Sewer. Not one of us likes to pay Taxes and Fees but they are what pays for our City Operations and our Infrastructure. The next issue is expectations and how big do you build? It is the job for the Engineers to perform Testing and Calculations. This Evaluation provides the costs of various levels of Pumping. The Large Pumps on 14th Avenue can pump football field size pools of water. This does not mean they can address every level of rain event. This last event was by some calculations an inch a minute. I am sure it no longer depends on the time of day. Join us next week for part two. As always, I am available for your questions, concerns and ideas to help make our City a better place. Please feel free to reach out to me at my office at: (954) 457-1318. On my Cell/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or Email me at: jcooper@cohb.org . < Previous News Next News >

  • Artistic And Environmentally Beneficial Reef Deployed off Hollywood Beach

Artistic And Environmentally Beneficial Reef Deployed off Hollywood Beach November 3, 2022 Share Ocean Rescue Alliance (ORA), in partnership with the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), has deployed a 1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project Site, its first in Broward County, off the coast of Hollywood Beach with 20 Ocean-Friendly Artificial Reef Modules. The Hollywood Site Installation took place on Tuesday with a barge carrying the modules headed to specific permitted sites off the coast of Hollywood. The Hollywood Artificial Reef is the second for Ocean Rescue Alliance and bringing the total number of Artificial Reef Structures deployed in the ocean off South Florida's coast to 100 since the 1000 Mermaids Project was launched 5 years ago.
1000 Mermaids is a monumental Public Eco-Art Project in the form of an Artificial Reef that serves as an underwater destination for Coral Restoration, Eco-Tourism and research. The Artificial Reef Sculptures, weighing between 2,200-3,300 lbs. each, come outfitted with the patented "Coral Lok" system allowing Coral to be out-planted directly to the structures. The structures, built by Reef Cells in Boynton Beach, have Biological Bases specifically engineered to support Fish Habitats and provide Coral Restoration opportunities. They will be placed just a few miles southeast of the Port Everglades Inlet and will be capable of being a recipient site for transplanted Corals. Of the 20 Artificial Reef Structures being deployed, 5 feature artistic sculptures such as mermaids, a swim up selfie mermaid tail and an industrial diver suit.
"The Hollywood 1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project site will enhance the nearshore Reef Ecosystem and serve as a real attraction for the dive community,” says Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy, who also serves as Chairperson of the City’s CRA. "These Artificial Reef Modules will entice Reef fish and support Coral Restoration, while at the same time as being beautiful pieces of art, divers will want to come and see them and be photographed with them. We hope to expand it in the future to offer additional underwater sites for beachgoers to swim to from the shore.”
Ocean Rescue Alliance's 1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project works to bring awareness to the growing problems affecting our Natural Reefs. This Project fuses art and science with artistic Reef Sculptures that look and function like Natural Reefs.
"The Hollywood Beach Reef Site creates an opportunity to connect the community back to the Marine Environment," says Shelby Thomas, Co-Founder and CEO of Ocean Rescue Alliance. "More importantly, this Reef Site will continuously host and protect Marine Life while facilitating unique opportunities for Education and Outreach Programs with Organizations such as the South Florida Association of Environmental Professionals, The Reef Discovery Center, Nova Southeastern University and many more.”
Reef Cells uses Eco-Friendly materials including: Limestone, Concrete & Calcium Carbonate that encourage Corals and other sea creatures to attach themselves to the Reef with Reef shapes that are strategically designed to provide a home to thousands of fish and invertebrates.
"It has been a beautiful dream 5 years in the making to help bring this revolutionary project come to life in our backyard. We're extremely excited to provide citizen science opportunities enabling anyone from a Middle School Student to a Veteran to help Out-Plant Coral fragments while diving the Reef," says Evan Snow, Co-Founder & COO of the Ocean Rescue Alliance & 1000 Mermaids Project.
Coral Reefs provide an estimated $375 Billion per year around the world in goods and services with NOAA estimating South Florida Reefs have an asset value of $8.5 Billion generating $4.4 Billion in local sales and $2 Billion in local income supporting over 70,000 jobs. With current Coral Disease and bleaching events disrupting the Florida Reef Tract, Artificial Reef Developments are a promising innovation to help sustain South Florida’s Reefs. About Ocean Rescue Alliance and the 1000 Mermaids Project Ocean Rescue Alliance (ORA) is a Marine Conservation and Restoration 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organization that implements innovative technologies to Restore Marine Environments. Through the creation of Artificial Reefs designed to incorporate art, innovative designs and safe materials, ORA wants to enhance Marine Habitats and provide unique diving locations worldwide that create lasting Habitat for Marine Organisms, increase Coastal Resiliency and expand Ecosystem Services. “Like” us on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/1000mermaids Or follow us on Instagram at: @1000mermaids.
