"Most Favored Nation" Pricing Doesn't Actually Put America First By Larry Bucshon Jun 19, 2025 The White House Just Announced A Sweeping Plan That Could Ultimately Cap U.S. Drug Prices At The Lower Levels Seen In Other Developed Countries. Administration officials have good intentions. They're trying to shake up the plainly unacceptable status quo, in which American "citizens pay massively higher prices than other nations pay for the same exact pill, from the same factory, effectively subsidizing socialism abroad," as President Trump put it. But this proposal could largely eliminate the incentives for biotech companies to invest in new medicines, ultimately resulting in millions of premature deaths and lost jobs. Foreign price fixing is a real problem. Most other wealthy countries artificially cap the cost of medicines. Those countries know they'll get away with it, because as Economist Craig Garthwaite explains in a recent paper in the Journal of Economic Perspectives, many foreign countries are "too small to be central to the drug development investment decisions of innovative firms." It's entirely unfair that Americans are forced to disproportionately shoulder the majority of the world's research and development burden. But adopting other countries' artificially low prices won't fix the problem. It'd just make it impossible for biotech companies to recover their immense R&D costs -- and thus destroy the incentives to develop new treatments altogether. This isn't just a theoretical concern. Europe used to dominate the global biotech industry for most of the 20th Century, accounting for more than half of all new drugs developed -- but America surged ahead by the late 1990’s after European policymakers kneecapped their domestic innovators with price controls. And while America historically resisted the temptation to impose price controls on medicines -- at least until the Inflation Reduction Act -- we have imposed them on medical devices before, with disastrous results. A new National Bureau of Economic Research paper examined what happened when Medicare slashed reimbursements for certain medical devices by more than 60%. Innovation fell off a cliff. Patent filings dropped 75%. New product launches fell 25%. The executive order would replicate that mistake on a far larger scale. If it takes effect, companies will simply stop investing in most new drug research. It's simple economics -- kill the potential return, and you kill the risk-taking too. That'd come at a massive human cost. New drugs have been responsible for more than a third of the decline in Cardiovascular deaths since 1990. Now we're seeing promising treatments for Obesity, ALS, and rare genetic disorders. Imagine telling families that future breakthroughs won't be coming -- because we chose to import foreign price controls. There are smarter ways to lower prices without compromising innovation. First, we must eliminate the waste in our healthcare system. More than half of every dollar spent on brand-name drugs doesn't go to the companies that make them -- it's absorbed by a complicated supply chain with misaligned incentives that rakes in hundreds of billions from hidden rebates and markups, with no requirements to pass savings on to patients. Second, we should tackle the foreign pricing problem through trade negotiations. Other wealthy nations should have to pay market rates for medicines if they want access to American markets. The White House is right to be angry about foreign price fixing. But we need to fight it without destroying one of America's most successful industries in the process. - "A Whoville Holiday": The 67th Annual Candy Cane Parade on Hollywood Beach
"A Whoville Holiday": The 67th Annual Candy Cane Parade on Hollywood Beach November 29, 2023 Share In the heart of Hollywood, Florida, a vibrant celebration continues to enchant locals and visitors alike—welcome to the 67th Annual Hollywood Beach Candy Cane Parade. This cherished event, steeped in history and festivity, is a testament to the community spirit that has flourished since its inception in the mid-1950’s. A jubilant extravaganza set against the backdrop of the picturesque Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, the parade promises an evening of joy, wonder, and holiday magic for all who attend. What began as a creative initiative by a group of enterprising Hollywood merchants has blossomed into one of the longest-standing holiday parades in the nation. The inaugural parade was conceived as a clever strategy to entice patrons to peruse the local shops and businesses. Over the decades, this simple yet ingenious idea has grown into a beloved tradition, captivating audiences with its array of brilliantly illuminated floats and vehicles. Scheduled to commence at 7:00 p.m., the Candy Cane Parade is a dazzling spectacle that winds its way along the iconic Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, embarking from Missouri Street and meandering southward to Harrison Street. Anticipation runs high as spectators eagerly gather along the parade route, eager to witness the mesmerizing procession of lighted floats, spirited marching bands, and captivating displays presented by civic, non-profit, and children's groups. For those seeking optimal viewing, the Hollywood Beach Theatre at Johnson Street offers complimentary seating, while guests are encouraged to bring along their own lawn chairs for added comfort and prime parade viewing. Alternatively, reserving a table at one of the charming seaside restaurants promises a delightful vantage point to revel in the festivities. Parking on the barrier island can be challenging during such a popular event. To alleviate congestion, parade-goers are urged to park in the Downtown Parking Garages starting at 5:00 p.m. Conveniently located at 19th Avenue at Polk Street and 20th Avenue at Van Buren Street, these garages offer FREE Patron Shuttles to transport attendees to the beach. Shuttles will operate continuously until the evening's conclusion at 10:00 p.m., following which the final shuttle will depart the beach area. In an admirable effort to preserve the beauty of Hollywood, parade participants have been encouraged to contribute to the city's environmental initiatives by distributing candy directly to onlookers, rather than tossing it from floats. This thoughtful approach aims to minimize waste along the Broadwalk and sandy shores. Additionally, parade-goers can play their part by bringing reusable water bottles, furthering the community's commitment to sustainability. A collaborative effort between the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency and the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts, the Candy Cane Parade epitomizes the city's dedication to fostering joyous communal experiences. For those seeking more information about this signature holiday event, the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts can be reached at: (954) 921-3404. As the 67th Annual Hollywood Beach Candy Cane Parade approaches, the excitement and anticipation reverberate throughout the community. It's a time-honored tradition that brings together residents and visitors, uniting them in the spirit of merriment and spreading cheer that illuminates the season. - Mother’s Day On A Budget: Inexpensive & Thoughtful Ways To Celebrate Mom
Mother’s Day On A Budget: Inexpensive & Thoughtful Ways To Celebrate Mom May 5, 2022 Share Mother’s Day is just a few days away and while Mom may be dreaming of a far-off getaway, a thoughtful gift from her loved ones is sure to warm her heart. Show Mom how much you appreciate her with one of these heart-felt gestures that won’t break the bank. Like all of us these days I am sure Mom has precious photos saved on a camera, computer or phone that she hasn’t gotten around to printing? Print them for her and maybe even frame a few. Moms love pictures of their family but rarely print them or are even in the photo! What’s more perfect than giving a framed photo of Mom with her little love bugs? Flowers are an obvious choice, you can’t go wrong with this classic and timeless gift, but they can be expensive. How can you get her a beautiful bouquet on a budget? Stay on budget by choosing flowers from your own garden or a location that might have a special meaning for her. There are many locations that might have some beautiful flowers that are open to the public where you may pick a few. Trim a palm leaf to add some greenery and you can be sure to have something unique and thoughtful. You could even make it extra special by adding quality time, like a picnic or a date in the park. This is a great way to reconnect and spend quality time together. If you truly want to tug on Mom's heartstrings, have your kids tell her how they really feel about her with a handmade card to express their love. You may be surprised with their sweet sentiments. You can have them create it on the computer if they are a bit savvy or go old-school with colored pencils, crayons and plain paper. The best way to do this is have your kids write out the words first and then draw pictures around them. You could even decorate it with glitter or photos taken during special moments over the past year. If your Mom has a sweet tooth try an at home ice cream sundae bar. Indulge it by making an ice cream sundae with her favorite toppings. By having the bar at home it will be sure to not break the bank plus there might even be extra to have another day. An inexpensive way to create this sundae bar is to start at the dollar store, they have a variety of glass bowls and goblets to make the day extra special. Pick up some of Mom's favorite ice cream, goodies and voila, you have a perfect treat for everyone! Just don't make Mom do the dishes after! There is another classic favorite, breakfast in bed. You may need to take the lead on this for really young ones, or even lay out some of Mom’s favorite foods the night before. A meal made with love is the perfect way to start the day. Even if you aren't the best in the kitchen, have no fear, just follow this simple recipe and you will be sure to have something Mom will enjoy and remember for years to come! Easy Eggs Benedict Ingredients: 6 Slices of Deli Ham 1 1/2 Tablespoons of Butter 3 English Muffins split and toasted 6 Eggs Hollandaise Sauce: 1 Cup 2.75 Ounces of Butter 1 Egg Yolk 1 Tablespoon of cold Water 1 Teaspoon of Salt and Pepper 1/4 Of a Juiced Lemon Equipment: 1 Frying pan 1 Glass bowl 1 Whisk Method: 1. Sauté the ham slices in the butter for a couple of minutes. 2. Place the ham on the English muffins. Pour on any butter from the frypan. 3. Poach the eggs in salted, simmering water in a frypan. Spoon the water over the eggs. When set, remove with a slotted spoon. Place on top of the ham. 4. Sauce: Melt the butter and add the juice of a quarter of a lemon. 5. Place the egg yolk and the water in a metal or glass bowl sitting it over a pan of hot water on low heat with the bowl touching the water. Whisk the mixture while slowly pouring in the melted butter. 6. Whisk the yolk mixture briskly as it cools. It will thicken and double after five minutes. 7. Spoon over the eggs on the muffins. You can substitute ham for bacon or smoked salmon. Baby spinach leaves under the eggs is also a nice addition. If the Hollandaise Sauce starts splitting, add a drop more water over the low heat, whisk it and it should come together again. You can also take it up a notch by adding some fresh fruit on the side with a dash of whipped cream. < Previous News Next News >

- Messages From Sunny Isles Beach Commissioner Jerry Joseph: Adhering to the New July 1, 2024 Laws: Condo Transparency and Administration & Safety in Sunny Isles Beach
Messages From Sunny Isles Beach Commissioner Jerry Joseph: Adhering to the New July 1, 2024 Laws: Condo Transparency and Administration & Safety in Sunny Isles Beach By Jerry Joseph, Commissioner - www.sibfl.net August 22, 2024 Share Over the past 2 1/2 years, I have heard from and assisted many condo owners throughout Sunny Isles Beach with questions regarding condo records requests, board meeting schedules, insurance, certifications, and assessments. Due to severe assessments in some condos, many elderly residents have sadly become financially stressed and could benefit from simple legal advice. Many recent contacts with residents have referred to a lack of condo board adherence to certain by-law sections relating to elections, quarterly meetings, and notices thereof. As of July 1, condo managers will need to be more transparent regarding the production of condo documents, meeting notices, adherence to by-laws, and elections. The problem arises when assessments hit without adequate documentation regarding contracts associated with those assessments, the bidding process, and the qualifications of the contractor doing the work. I am available to assist any condo manager with pool or spa issues, elevator problems, permit hangups, and other issues involving the City, County, or State. Please do not hesitate to contact me for an immediate and my sincere attempt to assist, in any way. Safety in Sunny Isles Beach Traffic safety is a number one priority in Sunny Isles Beach. At the April 18, 2024 Commission Workshop, I proposed for immediate action that our SIBPD and Parking Code Enforcement prioritize the elimination of FedEx, UPS, Amazon, Uber, and Lyft drivers from stopping or parking in the right lanes of Collins Avenue going north or south for deliveries or drop-offs. These lanes also serve as bicycle lanes, and when the lane is blocked by delivery vehicles, it dangerously forces bicyclists into the middle lanes. Every driver on Collins Avenue has experienced this type of blockage of the right lanes. I have asked the City Manager to contact these services to demand assistance and have involved County Officials and FDOT in this task. Regarding scooter usage within Sunny Isles Beach, enforcement of our new Scooter Ordinance is now in full effect. SIBPD continues with its Helmet Giveaways and Scooter Registry drives. I ask all parents of children using scooters to please observe their use and emphasize safety, including adherence to stop signs, red lights and vehicle rights-of-ways. On a daily basis, I personally see so many instances of children and adults running stop signs and other unsafe practices. Courtesy of pedestrians by scooter riders and bicyclists on sidewalks is something that must be taught by parents and spoken about in our schools. Adults using these vehicles should already know to be considerate or should think it more. Residents who want to actually see what Commissioners are doing for them can take the time to watch City Workshops at 3 p.m. every third Thursday of the month and Regular Commission Meetings starting at 6:30 p.m. on that same day, by personally being present at City Hall, on Cable TV Sunny Isles Beach Channel, the City website, or Sunny Isles Beach YouTube Commission meetings. You should watch the questions that each Commissioner asks on your behalf and how you are represented. Contact Vice Mayor Jerry Joseph at: seat1@sibfl.net . - A Day of Tears
A Day of Tears By Tracy Renee Lee September 23, 2021 Share In September of 2001, We Vowed as Americans To Never Forget This past weekend was the 20th anniversary of September 11th; the worst enemy attack ever on America’s mainland by terrorists. Surprisingly, there are those who observed the day by going about their lives as usual. For me that was not possible. I remember the moment the attacks took place. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing. I remember having to sit down because the devastation of the attacks drew strength from my body. To this day, 9/11 pulls from me the joy that I experience on other days. I am sobered by the loss of life, liberty, and justice that not only Americans endure, but the world at large. 9/11 was the beginning of underlying sadness and heartbreak for me as I realized that America, and her way of life, were forever changed. One would think that such an horrific act against us would leave an indelible impression upon our hearts. Sadly, as I look around me, I see that for some, it has not. Many children and young adults do not even know what 9/11 is, and others simply do not care. It appears to me that our government does not even remember what took place on that dreadful day. Even worse, they have opened the gates for more terror to cross our borders and harm our citizens. Lately, as I watch the actions of our government my heart hemorrhages. By far, the worst things I have ever seen to date are the 9/11 attacks and the recent American abandonment of the Afghani people. To witness a sea of people run after jet liners, hanging on to them for coveted life and safety, only to be blown off their wings and plummet to death, is heart wrenching. Their falls bring to mind those falling from the twin towers. And, to see Afghani mother’s handing over their wee babies to American soldiers goes beyond comprehension. In September of 2001, we vowed as Americans never to forget the crimes inflicted against us on that mournful day. In August of 2021, our government and a great number of our citizens, did just that. They forgot about it all. To stand by and allow the actions that have transpired to go without consequences is to support them. In doing so, we are just as guilty and barbaric as those who try to tell us to look the other way or to focus on something different. The consequences of America’s abandonment will have a far and long reaching effect. America’s safety and that of the people of the world has been colossally compromised. And, who is to blame? Who is responsible? Responsibility is not solely that of our government; it is ours too. We are the fools who elected such imbeciles, we are the fools that stand by and allow them to do as they will without consequences. I fear, however, that the consequences will soon be ours. Our troops have lost life and limb to protect and restore our safety and our liberty. Do the lives of those lost on 9-11-2001, and those of our beloved troops over the past 20 years, count for naught? Why has our government let liberty, safety, and decency slip away again? Why do they dismiss the anguish of the survivors and impose policies that only encourage more attacks, more loss and more suffering? Have Americans become so disconnected that they fail to see where much is given, much is expected? Do we not see that our blessings obligate us with responsibilities, not only to ourselves, but to the world at large? It is a truth that what a person will do to one, he will do to another. Do not bury your head in the sand. If our government will abandon our obligations of protection and safe transition to a nation of people, they will do the same to us. It is merely a matter of time and circumstance. There were times in our nation’s history where certain groups (races and ethnicities) were considered less deserving than others. Many people have suffered oppressions due to period acceptances of hierarchy and classifications. Although our ancestors have battled against such atrocities and stigmas, do not assume that they might not return and divide us again. If we are not vigilant in our course to protect our constitutional declaration that all men are created equal, we may see that glorious gift fade. In its wake, battles, death, terror, and oppression shall most certainly take hold. These are the spoils of evil consequences; of evil men. 9-11 is a difficult day for me. It is a day filled with heartache for our nation and sympathy for the losses and sorrows of the survivors. If Americans do not stand up to their responsibilities, we will see the fall of our nation. If we see the fall of our nation, not only America, but the entire world will experience dark oppression and crushing atrocities. 9/11 is a day of tears for the world. Let us pray and commit ourselves to the promise that we shall not fail. Let not the lives of our beloved soldiers, first responders, and innocent civilians be in vain. Terror is evil and governments who support it openly, or covertly, are evil too. Let us right our wrongs and seek to protect the weak, squelch the oppressors, install liberty, and share prosperity for all. That’s the American experience. It is our American dream, our duty and it used to be our honor. Please join me in my quest to restore America’s honor. Start today by becoming an informed citizenry by educating yourself to the truth. Stop listening to lies spewed across social media, radio, the internet, pod-casts, and television. Get out your history books, study civics and learn the truth. When faced with the realities of nuclear physics, Albert Einstein wrote a letter declaring the responsibility of scientists in protecting the world from destruction, “We scientists recognize our inescapable responsibility to carry to our fellow citizens an understanding of the simple facts of atomic energy and its implications for society. In this lies our only security and our only hope. We believe that an informed citizenry will act for life and not for death.” (The Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists in Post-War America, Oregon State Library) As Einstein plainly recognizes, society is susceptible to atrocities due to ignorance, misinformation, and lies. His worries are the scientific consequences associated with unchecked control and use of atomic energy. He implies that the enormity of its power can be good or terrible dependent upon its application; yet control is possible through the conscious involvement of an informed and involved society. Einstein knew that if left to the control of governments, nuclear power would be the end of the world. Terror and evil governments require that same cost. If our citizenry fails to put forth the required investment, civilization will suffer horrific acts of terrorism, enormous losses of life and the death of liberty. My prayers are with you, they are with our nation; but most of all, they are with the surviving families of 9/11 as they suffer through the memories of this tragic day. May they and the world at large, never experience such a cowardice act of terrorism ever again. My name is Tracy Renee Lee.
