- A Battle Over Language That Reshaped A City - A Gripping Portrait Of Miami At A Cultural And Political Breaking Point | sun-times
A Battle Over Language That Reshaped A City - A Gripping Portrait Of Miami At A Cultural And Political Breaking Point South Florida Sun Times Jan 28, 2026 Miami New Drama Is Proud To Present The World Premiere Of English Only, A Bold New Play By Acclaimed Writer Nicholas Griffin And Directed By New York-Based Director Margot Bordelon. Running From Thursday, January 29th, 2026 To Sunday, February 22nd, 2026, At The Colony Theatre, This High-Stakes Drama Thrusts Audiences Into Miami During One Of The Most Volatile Moments In Its History. Set in 1980 Miami, English Only unfolds in the turbulent aftermath of the Mariel Boatlift, when more than 125,000 Cuban refugees arrived on South Florida’s shores, reshaping the region overnight and igniting a fierce political battle over identity, language, and belonging. As tensions mounted, a grassroots movement emerged to make English the county’s sole official language, sparking a heated showdown with activists fighting to preserve Miami-Dade’s bilingual future. The newly formed grassroots group, Citizens of Dade United, led by Emmy Shafer, launched a campaign designed to end the county’s official bilingual policies and remove Spanish from government documents, communications, and civic life. Standing in opposition was Young Attorney Manny Diaz of the Spanish American League Against Discrimination, who recognized that this was not just a symbolic gesture but a direct attempt to reshape political power, civil rights, and the identity of a city transformed by immigration and fear. English Only is the first theatrical work to dramatize a ballot initiative to remove Spanish as the official language, offering a gripping, human portrait of a city at a crossroads. As Miami reemerges at the forefront of national conversations, the moment feels especially meaningful. “This is a story about power, fear, and the fight to be heard,” says Nicholas Griffin, journalist, author, and playwright whose work, including Dangerous Days, has long explored the forces that shape Miami. When Miami New Drama’s Artistic Director, Michel Hausmann, came to Griffin, he was immediately attracted to the idea. “The debates at the heart of English Only are not relics of the past. They are the very conversations shaping Miami today,” says Michel Hausmann. “The chance to illuminate a defining moment in Miami’s history, with all its tension and humanity, was impossible to pass up.” This production continues the Miami History series that Miami New Drama has undertaken in recent years, which brings pivotal moments from our community to the stage, including Elian, Dangerous Days, and Confessions of a Cocaine Cowboy. The remarkable cast bringing English Only to life on the Colony Theatre stage is led by Andhy Mendez as Manny Diaz; the ensemble also features Rene Granado, Stan Rogers, Carmen Pelaez, Lucy Alvarez, Linda Mugleston, Barbara Simmons, Laura Faye Smith, and Emmy Shafer, along with an outstanding supporting company. Together, this group of actors delivers depth and emotional clarity to Nicholas Griffin’s world premiere, creating performances that feel both intimate and urgently of the moment. Behind the scenes, a powerhouse creative team guides every detail of the production. English Only is directed by Margot Bordelon with Karina Batchelor-Gomez serving as Assistant Director, and written by playwright Nicholas Griffin, with Dramaturgy by Jocelyn Clarke. The visual and technical world is shaped by Lighting Designer Solomon Weisbard alongside Nathalie Sore and Shane Cassidy, Sound Designer and Composer Salomon Lerner, Costume Designer Beth Goldenberg, Wig designer Carol Raskin, Projections Engineer and Mapper Steve Covey, Props Designer and Supervisor Tyler Correa, and Scenic Designers Justin and Christopher Swader. Casting is by Kelly Gillespie, with Production Stage Management by Amy Rauchwerger and Gunilla Alvarez Munoz, and Overall Production Management by Sajari Hume. This collaborative team comes together to create a bold, thoughtful, and resonant theatrical experience worthy of its world premiere, thereby marking a significant addition to The Colony Theatre’s commitment to presenting new works that illuminate the cultural forces shaping South Florida and the country at large. When: Dates: Thursday, January 29th, 2026 — Sunday, February 22nd, 2026 Where: The Colony Theatre, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, Florida 33139 Show Date & Times: Thursday - Saturday at 8:00 p.m., Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Tickets: $40-$90 Tickets will be available through The Colony Theatre box office and website: https://miaminewdrama.org/ About Miami New Drama Founded by visionary playwright and Director Michel Hausmann, Miami New Drama is the largest bilingual professional theater company in the United States, dedicated to producing socially relevant, artistically ambitious new work. Teach And Inspire Your Kids By Exploring History As A Family By Feature Impact Aug 27, 2026 During Back-To-School Season, Education Is Naturally At The Forefront Of Most Parents' Minds. While A Lot Of Important Learning Is Accomplished In The Classroom, There Are So Many Opportunities To Continue Challenging And Developing Children's Minds And Hearts In Family Life As Well. Learning About History Together Is A Practical Way To Inspire Deep, Meaningful Conversations About The World, Whether From Books, Documentaries Or Visits To Museums. Now is an opportune time to explore the story of Anne Frank, a Jewish teenager evading Nazi capture during the Holocaust. Families can read her famous diary together then visit "Anne Frank The Exhibition," presented by the Anne Frank House at the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry. This comprehensive exhibition immerses visitors in the context that shaped Frank's life, from her early years in Frankfurt through her tragic death and how her father ensured her legacy. The centerpiece is the first full-scale recreation of the Annex where the Frank family and four other Jews hid during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The exhibition, recommended for visitors ages 10 and older, is open through early 2027. No matter what piece of history families choose to delve into together, they should take the time to discuss with their kids what they're thinking and feeling about everything they're discovering. Then together they can figure out what lessons from the past can be taken into the future. About the exhibition Anne Frank The Exhibition is an immersive, full-scale recreation of the Annex where Anne Frank, her family and four other Jewish inhabitants lived in hiding during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. Griffin Museum of Science and Industry is the first museum in the Midwest to present this exhibition, and Chicago is only the second U.S. city to host this extraordinary experience, featuring never-before-seen artifacts from Anne Frank’s life. Explore the world that shaped Anne’s story, from her early childhood in Frankfurt through the rise of Nazi Germany and the spread of antisemitism across Europe, to the Frank family’s move to Amsterdam. There, Anne lived for nearly ten years, including the final two, which were spent in hiding. Step inside the meticulously reconstructed Annex and reflect on the daily challenges, risks and courage of those who hid there before their arrest and deportation in 1944. "Anne Frank's story is a powerful reminder of what happens when fear and hatred are allowed to take root," said Dr. Chevy Humphrey, Griffin Museum of Science and Industry President and CEO. "At the same time, it reveals the quiet but enduring strength of curiosity, creativity and resilience, values that sit at the heart of our mission. We hope this exhibition offers meaningful moments of reflection for our guests, particularly young people, and encourages them to think critically about their role in the world they are inheriting.” Exhibition support for Griffin MSI The exhibition is presented at Griffin MSI with support from Lead Benefactors Tony and Laura Davis, Presenting Benefactors Crown Family Philanthropies, Premier Sponsors Zell Family, Contributing Sponsors The Kaplan Foundation, Patron Sponsors Cari and Michael J. Sacks and GCM Grosvenor, the Estate of Judith Marx Golub, Jewish United Fund, IMC, John and Jacolyn Bucksbaum Family Foundation and Michael and Tanya Polsky, with supporting gifts from the Urbanovitch Family and Inland Group, Sharon and Neil Book, Chicago Bulls Charities and Rich and Vanessa Copans. - Looking For A BFF? The Humane Society of Broward County Has Some Waiting For You
Looking For A BFF? The Humane Society of Broward County Has Some Waiting For You June 9, 2022 Share Can I be your New BFF (Best Friend Forever)? Everyone at the Shelter thinks I’m one cool guy, I just need someone to give me a chance. I might be big… I weigh 70 pounds and could be part American Bulldog. My name is Papa (ID#: 654573) and I’m only two years old. So, you know more about me, I love to be with people and would do best in a home with Adults or Teenagers - I sometimes get excited and don't want to knock any Little Ones over. I'm Potty Trained, good with other Dogs and love to go for walks. I may want to be by your side a lot, at least until I get settled into my New Home. Thanks to Dolly's Dream, my Adoption Fee is sponsored and I get to go Home with things to help me settle in. Looking to add some Entertainment to your Family? If so, pick me Isaac (ID#: 655732)! I’m curious, playful, love to be pet and am a Little Baby at just 16 weeks old. There are more than two dozen Little Ones like me hoping to find our forever homes, so if you’ve thought about adding a Kitten, now is a great time to head over to the shelter. Did you know when you Adopt, all of the Pets are Spayed or Neutered, get a Microchip and Preliminary Vaccinations? We also get 14 days of Limited Health Care from VCA Animal Hospitals and a Bag of Purina ONE Pet Food. So if Papa and Isaac don't fit your Lifestyle, there are many more future BFF Possibilities waiting for you to visit them. The Experts at The Humane Society of Broward County know that the hardest part is choosing your New Forever Friend. The HSBC Staff are well trained to help you find the right fit in your New Pet, with a personality and Lifestyle to match your own. Here is the link to check out what Pets are waiting to become a part of your life At: https://humanebroward.com/all-pets/ Preparing to Adopt If you lease your home, check with your Landlord before Adopting to be sure you are allowed to have a Pet and can afford all required Pet Deposits. Pets are sometimes returned because of Lease Restrictions and/or Landlord’s disapproval of the Pet chosen. Even if you Own your Home or Condo many Homeowners Associations may have rules that don't allow Animals over a certain weight, so always check first. This can be an expensive lesson since the Adoption Fees are Non-Refundable and being returned to the Shelter can be a stressful experience for the Animal. Once you've selected a new friend, all Dogs and Cats making the transition to a new home will need time to adjust to a New Family and may require House Training and Behavior Training to correct Problem Behavior. Positive Reinforcement-Based Training is recommended for all newly Adopted Dogs and Puppies. This is a lifetime commitment to your Pet. Remember that the Animal you choose has already been abandoned or unwanted at least once in its life. Dogs and Cats may live 12 to 15 years or more. Your thoughtful consideration, preparation and commitment will help ensure a lifelong placement. To meet a Pet at the Humane Society of Broward County please complete the Pre-Adoption Application At: www.humanebroward.com before you visit. The Humane Society of Broward County is located at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312. If you have Questions, Call: (954) 989-3977 Extension#: 6.
