  • Tobacco-Free ‘23: Three Reasons Why This Is The Year To Quit Tobacco For Good

Tobacco-Free ‘23: Three Reasons Why This Is The Year To Quit Tobacco For Good January 19, 2023 Share While Tobacco use has been declining for decades, 14.7% of Florida residents still smoke and Tobacco is the leading cause of death and disease in the state. Through the new “Tobacco-Free ‘23” campaign, the American Lung Association in Florida is sharing key reasons why 2023 is the year to quit Tobacco, as well as sharing tips and resources. “Each year, quitting smoking is listed as one of the top New Year’s resolutions. While quitting smoking is extremely difficult, it is possible. In fact, it typically takes a person 8-10 attempts to quit smoking for good, which is why we call it a journey,” said Janelle Hom, Executive Director, American Lung Association. “It is important to have support during this process, including family, friends and your doctor, to help keep you on the right path.” Here are three important reasons why 2023 is the year to start your journey to become Tobacco-free: 1. Your Health: Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in Florida, killing 32,300 people each year. Currently, 16 million Americans live with a tobacco-related disease. While it’s best to quit as early as possible, quitting Tobacco use at any age will enhance the length and quality of your life. 2. FDA is Preparing to End Sales of Menthol Cigarettes: Currently, the Food and Drug Administration FDA is in the process of finalizing rules to end the sale of Menthol Cigarettes and flavored Cigars in the U.S. If you use one of these Tobacco Products, this is an optimal time to begin your quit journey. In fact, after Canada stopped selling Menthol Cigarettes in 2017, the country saw an increase in quit attempts and cessation among people who smoked Menthols. 3. Be An Inspiration! Last year, the American Lung Association relaunched the “Super Stoppers Club” with Award-Winning Journalist Bob Levey to celebrate people who have quit smoking for good and inspire those who are trying to quit. Read inspiring quit stories and submit your own at: www.Lung.org/Super-Stoppers *Bonus: If your New Year’s Resolution is to save money, quitting smoking can save you between $2,230-$4,360 annually. Here are some of the tips and resources the American Lung Association recommends to successfully quit Tobacco: • Lung Helpline: Not sure where to start? Call the Lung Association’s free Lung Helpline and Tobacco Quitline at: 1 (800) LUNGUSA 1 (800) 586-4872, which is staffed with Licensed Registered Nurses, Respiratory Therapists and Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialists. • Talk to your healthcare provider: Talking to a healthcare provider about your plan to quit smoking is an important step. With your doctor’s help, you can include cessation medication into your Tobacco treatment plan, which can double your chances of quitting successfully. There are seven FDA-Approved medications that are proven to help you quit. • Get help from a proven resource: The American Lung Association offers resources to help adults and teens to quit all Tobacco products, including: • Freedom From Smoking® helps individuals create their own unique quit plan, as well as tips and techniques to stay successful in the long run. Freedom From Smoking can be accessed online, at a group class and through a self-guided workbook. Those looking to quit smoking are encouraged to use the method that works best for their learning style, schedule and unique quit Tobacco use plan. • Not-On-Tobacco® (N-O-T) is a teen smoking/chewing/vaping cessation program for teens who want to quit. The 10-session program provides the tools, information, and support for teens to end their addiction to Tobacco. Teens can participate in NOT in-person, virtually or online at: www.NOTforMe.org • Quit. Don’t Switch. E-Cigarettes are Tobacco products, and the FDA has not found any E-Cigarette to be safe and effective in helping smokers quit. Switching to E-Cigarettes does not mean quitting. Quitting means ending your addiction to Nicotine. For more information about quitting Tobacco for “Tobacco-Free ’23,” visit the American Lung Association website at: www.Lung.org Or call the Lung HelpLine at: 1 (800) LUNGUSA, 1 (800) 586-4872. < Previous News Next News >

  • ZOA Urges National Council For History Education To Revise Biased, Inaccurate Anti-Israel Lesson Plan | sun-times

ZOA Urges National Council For History Education To Revise Biased, Inaccurate Anti-Israel Lesson Plan Jewish Connection News Aug 27, 2026 Zionist Organization Of America (ZOA) National President Morton A. Klein Released The Following Statement: The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) has urged the National Council for History Education (NCHE), a federally funded non-profit organization that provides resources to educators and educational organizations, to revise a lesson plan riddled with factual inaccuracies and anti-Israel bias. The lesson plan – titled “Plan Displacement and Resistance: The Nakba of 1948 Continues” – downplays and ignores critical facts about Israel in order to deny the Jewish state’s right to exist and its right to defend its people from violence and terrorism. In a letter sent on August 10, 2026, to NCHE, the ZOA noted that the lesson plan violates the organization’s own mission to support “accurate” and “inclusive” teaching and learning of “complex histories.” The ZOA also cautioned that as a recipient of federal funds, NCHE must ensure that its programs and activities are free from antisemitic discrimination as required by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, or risk losing its federal funding. You can read the ZOA’s letter below: August 10, 2026 Ms. Jessica Ellison, Executive Director National Council for History Education 13940 Cedar Road, #393 University Heights OH 44118 Dear Mr. Ellison: We write on behalf of the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) to express deep concern about that National Council for History Education's (NCHE) lesson plan titled "Plan Displacement and Resistance: The Nakba of 1948 Continues." The lesson plan is shockingly inaccurate and biased against Israel. It downplays and ignores critical facts in order to deny Israel's right to exist and its right to defend its people from violence and terrorism. We urge you to ensure that this lesson plan is revised without delay. It not only fails to comport with NCHE's mission to support accurate and inclusive teaching and learning of complex histories, at the expense of teachers who may believe that they can rely on NCHE as a professional, responsible resource. The lesson plans also raises serious legal concerns. The ZOA led the successful battle to ensure that Title VI of the Civil Rights would be enforced to protect Jewish students from antisemitic discrimination. Under Title VI, recipients of federal funding must ensure that their programs and activities are free from antisemitic discrimination, or risk losing their federal funding. NCHE's funding comes primarily from federal grants, including from the U.S. Department of Education. If the lesson plan is not revised, we intend to alert the Department of Education that instead of providing factual and unbiased educational materials to educators and educational organizations, NCHE is using taxpayer money to promote false and unbiased information that encourages hatred of Israel and Jews. Some of the many examples of the problems with the lesson plan are set forth in the attached. We would be pleased to work NCHE to revise the lesson plan so that it satisfies NCHE's mission and its obligations under Title VI. We look forward to hearing from you. Very truly yours, Morton A. Klein National President Susan B. Tuchman, Esq. Director, Center for Law & Justice Inaccuracies and Bias in the National Council for History Education’s Lesson Plan Titled “Plan Displacement and Resistance: The Nakba of 1948 Continues” • The historical context that NCHE gives for what it describes as “Palestinian displacement” paints a factually inaccurate picture of the inhabitants of the Land of Israel. The lesson plan states that Palestinian Arabs were “dispossessed of their land,” omitting the critical fact — backed by mounds of archeological evidence — that Jews are indigenous to the Land of Israel going back more than 3,000 years. It is thus wrong and irresponsible for NCHE’s lesson plan to promote to educators the falsehood that the creation of the state of Israel, the religious and ancestral homeland of the Jewish people, amounted to the dispossession of another people’s land. • NCHE’s lesson plan inaccurately describes the Balfour Declaration as supporting “the statelessness, forced exile, and cultural marginalization” of Palestinian society. It did nothing of the sort. The Balfour Declaration recognized the Jewish people’s ancient connection to the Land of Israel by expressing support for establishing “a national home for the Jewish people” in their ancestral homeland. Importantly, the Balfour Declaration expressly provided that “nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities” in the land — which is the opposite of what NCHE’s lesson plan promotes to educators. • NCHE’s lesson plan inaccurately states that the partition plan to create an Arab state and a Jewish state was rejected by Arab leaders and representatives because they “saw it as unjust.” In fact, the Arabs rejected the partition plan because they refused to accept the existence of a Jewish state in the region, which would be a critical point for educators to understand. • NCHE’s lesson plan inaccurately states that “war broke out between Israeli and Palestinian forces” after the state of Israel was established in 1948. To begin with, the forces were not “Palestinian.” The armies of five Arab nations — Egypt, Syria, Transjordan, Lebanon, and Iraq — immediately invaded Israel to annihilate it. • NCHE’s lesson plan inaccurately suggests that Palestinian Arabs were expelled from their homes and prevented from returning during the Arab war against Israel in 1948. While some Palestinian Arabs were expelled, thousands left of their own volition in anticipation of war, and others left at the direction of Arab leaders. NCHE’s lesson plan fails to make the critical point that had the Arabs accepted the partition plan and a Jewish state alongside another Arab state — instead of launching a war — there would have been no Palestinian Arab refugees. • NCHE’s lesson plan acknowledges the plight of Palestinian Arab refugees after the state of Israel was created in 1948, but neglects to mention the plight of the hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees from Arab countries during the same period. Jews were persecuted in the Arab countries they were living in, some in communities that had existed for centuries. Jews in Arab countries were subjected to anti-Jewish pogroms and their property, businesses, and belongings were confiscated. Over 850,000 Jews from Arab countries were forced to leave their homes, communities, and livelihoods with virtually nothing. But they did not remain refugees for long. Some went to Europe and North America and most rebuilt their lives in Israel. None of the Jewish refugees received any compensation from the Arab countries that oppressed them and forced them out. • NCHE’s description in the lesson plan of the so-called “new Nakba” in Gaza is a complete distortion of the facts. The lesson plan describes in detail Israel’s alleged actions in response to Hamas’ October 7, 2023, massacre in Israel. Yet it makes barely a reference to the events which preceded Israel’s defensive actions. On October 7, 2023, Jews endured the worst massacre since the Holocaust. There is nothing in the lesson plan that addresses the fact that Hamas, which had already been recognized by the United States as a terrorist group since 1997, breached Israel’s border on that day and murdered, butchered and raped 1,200 men, women and children at a peaceful dance festival, and in their homes and communities, and then kidnapped hundreds of men, women and children, including babies, and held them hostage in Gaza, where some were murdered, and all were tortured and starved. NCHE’s lesson plan actually indulges the notion that Hamas’ slaughter and savagery were “a legitimate response to Israeli occupation,” omitting the critical fact that there was no “occupation” of Gaza. On the day of the massacre, there had not been a single Israeli civilian or soldier in Gaza for almost 20 years. Gazans were under the tyrannical, repressive rule of Hamas, not Israel. • NCHE’s lesson plan falsely depicts the effects of Israel’s defensive war against Hamas and its allies in Gaza and blames Israel for the suffering of civilians in Gaza. In fact, Hamas bears primary responsibility for their suffering, by provoking the war and then maximizing the damage to and death of civilians in Gaza. Tons and tons of food and other supplies were delivered to Gaza, but Hamas prevented aid from reaching civilians, instead of facilitating the process. Hamas intercepted and looted food convoys and blocked civilians from getting aid. Also, instead of doing whatever it could to protect its people in a time of war, Hamas deliberately sought to increase civilian casualties by using civilians in Gaza as human shields. It used civilian homes, hospitals, schools and mosques for command operations and to store weapons, launch rockets, and house its soldiers. Hamas soldiers wore civilian clothing to blend in with the population in humanitarian zones. Before launching its attack on October 7, 2023, Hamas spent years constructing hundreds of miles of underground tunnels from which the terrorist group launched attacks, stored weapons, sheltered its soldiers, and hid Israeli hostages. These tunnels were integrated into residential neighborhoods, houses, hospitals, mosques, schools and United Nations facilities. Previous Next

  • Are You a Money Whisperer? New Study Reveals 6 in 10 Americans Don't Talk About Money

Are You a Money Whisperer? New Study Reveals 6 in 10 Americans Don't Talk About Money By BPT January 4, 2024 Share America, it's time to have the money talk. According to research by Empower, a financial services company, 62% of people don't talk about money. Mum's the word with their family (63%), friends (75%) and even with their spouse/partner (46%), though millennials and Gen Z are twice as likely to say they're an "open book" compared to older generations (28% versus 13%). Many people would rather discuss politics (43%) and death (32%) than their finances (24%). It may be costing them their dreams. A majority of people believe more candid "money talks" have the power to change the world: 66% remark that open conversations can help people build generational wealth, improve the gender wage gap (62%) and over half say that money conversations could improve workplace transparency (56%). Carol Waddell, President of Empower Personal Wealth, says, "Conversation is a currency on the pathway to financial security, and open discussions about money can have a truly transformative effect on society. Our study shows people believe that clarity about their financial picture, talking to an advisor and financial education are key to achieving financial success." 1. Growing up without money conversations Don't talk about money: that's the message half (52%) of Americans hear, learning it's impolite to talk about finances (26%), and certainly not what you earn (35%). The taboo prevails for nearly two-thirds (60%) of people who don't feel comfortable on the topic. Americans recall stowing away coins in a piggy bank (41%) but say many practical financial lessons weren't discussed - like the importance of having an emergency fund (31%), building good credit (30%), and managing debt (27%) - as kids or adults. This might explain why Americans tend to clam up when the conversation turns to money. While many received an allowance (36%), the majority (68%) were never taught how to manage a budget. Nearly a quarter of Gen Zers (23%) grew up in a household with a swear jar teaching about money and manners - yet 79% of all people say they never spoke about how much is "needed" to be financially secure. One in 5 (18%) Americans surveyed say they were raised with a YOLO money motto: "You only live once, so don't worry too much about finances." Despite the saying, more than a third (37%) say they regularly worry. That's even higher for Gen Z and millennials (51% and 49%) and women, who are considerably more stressed about their personal finances than men (42% versus 33%). 2. Talking about money at work Figuring out personal finance is intimidating and overwhelming for half of Americans (48%), and when it comes to managing their money, 39% say they don't know where to start, including 41% of women and 37% of men. Compare that with sky-high confidence managing money at work: 73% feel at ease overseeing company budgets and the majority say they clearly understand their employer's finances and performance (70%). Reassuringly, people have a strong grasp on employer benefits like the availability of their company's 401(K) plan (80%) and say they know how their pay raises work (77%). Advocating for themselves is where it gets tricky. One-third (33%) of people don't feel comfortable asking for an increase. Men feel more comfortable asking for a pay raise than women (74% versus 59%). Better market data on compensation could potentially boost negotiation confidence and nearly half (49%) of survey respondents (and a majority of millennials, 69%, and Gen Z, 71%) believe discussing salaries can lead to better career opportunities. Americans say they avoid uncomfortable money talk at work (68%), and more than half (56%) wish discussing salaries wasn't taboo. Do you know how much your co-workers make? Just 19% of respondents say they've asked. But the workplace isn't the only area Americans are staying quiet. People haven't asked their friends (68%) or family (60%) either. Women are less comfortable talking about money with co-workers than men (36% women versus 50% men). That said, people may not be as shy as expected: 58% of millennials and 53% of Gen Z (and 34% of Americans overall), would share their salary information on their LinkedIn. What's it amount to? According to 62% of respondents, open money conversations could solve the gender wage gap. Americans say greater wage transparency would motivate employees to work harder (50%) and help avoid miscommunications (60%). 3. Speak with an expert. More than three-quarters (77%) of Americans want to see society take on more "money talks" about ways to save for the future (41%), money mistakes they've made (36%) and basic financial literacy (34%). A quarter want more discussions about how to negotiate (26%) and pay for big expenses (24%). Even more open dialogue about the emotional aspects of money would be helpful for 20% of respondents. Ultimately, people believe more open conversations about money can have a truly transformative effect on society: 66% think it can help more people achieve financial freedom. So, how does America get there? Respondents agree that clarity about their financial picture (40%), talking to an advisor (36%), and financial education (34%) are key to achieving financial success. "In these challenging times, staying tight-lipped about money is something people can no longer afford. As part of our mission to advance financial freedom for all, we're here to help people speak up and take the next step for a brighter financial future," says Waddell. If conversation is a currency on the pathway to financial security, it's time to start speaking up. < Previous News Next News >

  • GOT OCD - There's Help: Clinical Trial Is Recruiting People With Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

GOT OCD - There's Help: Clinical Trial Is Recruiting People With Obsessive Compulsive Disorder August 3, 2023 Share In the world of Mental Health, there exists a silent, yet powerful force that affects millions of individuals around the globe. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is not simply an inclination towards neatness or organization; it is a complex and often debilitating condition that disrupts the lives of those who suffer from it. In this article, we delve into the intricate layers of OCD, exploring its manifestations, impact, and avenues for treatment. Understanding OCD Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is characterized by a relentless cycle of intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and compulsive behaviors. These obsessions, often distressing and intrusive, can range from fears of contamination, harm to loved ones, or even the fear of causing harm to oneself. In a desperate attempt to alleviate the anxiety triggered by these obsessions, individuals with OCD resort to compulsions, which are repetitive actions or mental rituals. These compulsions serve as temporary relief but eventually feed the cycle, reinforcing the disorder. Many misconceptions surround OCD, and it is essential to dispel these myths to better understand the disorder. OCD is not a mere quirk or an idiosyncrasy but a Clinically Diagnosed Mental Health Condition. Contrary to popular belief, OCD is not just about cleanliness or a desire for orderliness; it can manifest in various forms, affecting every aspect of an individual's life. Imagine being trapped in your own mind, unable to escape the relentless stream of distressing thoughts that hijack your consciousness. For those with OCD, this is an everyday reality. It's like walking on eggshells, where even the simplest of actions can set off a chain reaction of anxious thoughts and compulsive behaviors. Meet Sarah, a 32-year-old Marketing Professional, who has been battling OCD since her early teens. Sarah's obsessions revolve around the fear of contamination, causing her to spend hours each day washing her hands. This behavior not only consumes her time but also prevents her from engaging in activities she once loved. Social events become a dreaded ordeal, and her professional life suffers due to constant handwashing interruptions. The Weight Of Stigma The Stigma surrounding Mental Health is often a significant barrier for those with OCD seeking help. Due to the misconception that OCD is a mere personality quirk or exaggerated behavior, individuals may hesitate to share their struggles or fear of being judged. This Stigma can lead to Isolation, worsening the already challenging experience of living with OCD. It is essential to recognize that OCD is not a choice; it is a Medical Condition that requires understanding and empathy. Support from Friends, Family, and Mental Health Professionals can make a significant difference in the lives of those struggling with OCD. While OCD is undoubtedly a source of Immense Pain and distress for those affected, it is crucial to acknowledge that individuals with OCD often demonstrate incredible resilience and strength. Many go on to lead fulfilling lives, pursuing successful careers, and maintaining meaningful relationships. While living with OCD may seem like an insurmountable challenge, there is hope. Various treatment approaches, such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Medication, have proven effective in Managing OCD Symptoms. There is even a Clinical Trial to Conduct New Research about the Disorder. Clinical Trial South Florida Research Phase I-IV, Inc. is actively recruiting people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) aged 18-65 for a New Clinical Research Study evaluating the Safety and Efficacy of an Investigational Treatment in adults. OCD is a Mental Health Disorder that affects one in 100 people and occurs when a person gets caught in a cycle of uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts and behaviors. This Multicenter, Placebo Controlled, Phase 3 Clinical Trial is studying Adjunctive Troriluzole to treat the symptoms of OCD by targeting Glutamate. Glutamate is a Chemical found in the Brain that is believed to be a contributing factor to OCD. “Alarmingly, it can take from 14 up to 17 years from the onset of symptoms for a person to get an appropriate Diagnosis and Effective Treatment for OCD,” said Silvia I. Silva-Duluc, Psychiatrist at South Florida ResearchPhase I-IV, Inc. and Investigator in the OCD Clinical Trial. “Unfortunately, one third of people with OCD do not respond to currently available Medications so new therapies are urgently needed. It’s been over two decades since the FDA-Approval of a new OCD Medication, which is why it is so important for people to participate in Clinical Trials. We are hopeful Troriluzole will help these individuals to better manage their Disorder and, in turn, have a better quality of life.” Clinicians at South Florida Research Phase I-IV, Inc. are now seeking eligible participants for the Study. To Enroll, participants must be between age 18 and 65, believe they have symptoms of OCD or have been diagnosed with OCD, and not be taking Fluvoxamine (Luvox). For more information about participating in the Study at South Florida Research Phase I-IV, Inc., call: (305) 418-0841. Or visit: www.ocdtrials.com Study Details The Study will Enroll approximately 2,000 participants between the ages of 18 and 65 who will receive Adjunctive Troriluzole or Placebo for the treatment of OCD. The Efficacy of Adjunctive Troriluzole compared to Placebo will be measured by the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale, a scale designed to rate the severity and type of symptoms in those with the Disorder. < Previous News Next News >

  • This Is Not Freedom, America: The Profit Incentives Driving the American Police State

This Is Not Freedom, America: The Profit Incentives Driving the American Police State By John & Nisha Whitehead October 12, 2023 Share Pay no heed to the circus politics coming out of Washington DC. It’s just more of the same grandstanding by tone-deaf politicians oblivious to the plight of the citizenry. Don’t allow yourselves to be distracted by the competing news headlines cataloging the antics of the ruling classes. While they are full of sound and fury, they are utterly lacking in substance. Tune out the blaring noise of meaningless babble. It is intended to drown out the very real menace of a government which is consumed with squeezing every last penny out of the population. Focus instead on the steady march of the police state at both the national, state and local levels, and the essential freedoms that are being trampled underfoot in its single-minded pursuit of power. While the overt and costly signs of the despotism exercised by the increasingly authoritarian regime that passes itself off as the United States government are all around us—warrantless surveillance of Americans’ private phone and email conversations by the FBI, NSA, etc.; SWAT team raids of Americans’ homes; shootings of unarmed citizens by police; harsh punishments meted out to schoolchildren in the name of zero tolerance; drones taking to the skies domestically; endless wars; out-of-control spending; militarized police; roadside strip searches; privatized prisons with a profit incentive for jailing Americans; fusion centers that collect and disseminate data on Americans’ private transactions; and militarized agencies with stockpiles of ammunition, to name some of the most appalling—you rarely hear anything about them from the politicians, the corporations or the news media. So what’s behind the blackout of real news? Surely, if properly disclosed and consistently reported on, the sheer volume of the government’s activities, which undermine the Constitution and dance close to the edge of outright illegality, would give rise to a sea change in how business is conducted in our seats of power. Yet when we're being bombarded with wall-to-wall news coverage and news cycles that change every few days, it’s difficult to stay focused on one thing—namely, holding the government accountable to abiding by the rule of law—and the powers-that-be understand this. As with most things, if you want to know the real motives behind any government program, follow the money trail. When you dig down far enough, you quickly find that those who profit from Americans being surveilled, fined, scanned, searched, probed, tasered, arrested and imprisoned are none other than the police who arrest them, the courts which try them, the prisons which incarcerate them, and the corporations, which manufacture the weapons, equipment and prisons used by the American police state. These injustices, petty tyrannies and overt acts of hostility are being carried out in the name of the national good—against the interests of individuals, society and ultimately our freedoms—by an elite class of government officials working in partnership with megacorporations that are largely insulated from the ill effects of their actions. Everywhere you go, everything you do, and every which way you look, we’re getting swindled, cheated, conned, robbed, raided, pickpocketed, mugged, deceived, defrauded, double-crossed and fleeced by governmental and corporate shareholders of the American police state out to make a profit at taxpayer expense. Not only are Americans forced to spend more on taxes than the annual financial burdens of food, education and clothing combined, but we’re also being played as easy marks by hustlers bearing the imprimatur of the government. Examples of this legalized, profits-over-people, government-sanctioned extortion abound: On the roads. In the prisons. In the schools. In the endless wars abroad. In the form of militarized police. In profit-driven schemes such as asset forfeiture. By the security industrial complex. By a government addicted to power. This perverse mixture of government authoritarianism and corporate profits has increased the reach of the state into our private lives while also adding a profit motive into the mix. And, as always, it’s we the people, we the taxpayers, we the gullible voters who keep getting taken for a ride by politicians eager to promise us the world on a plate. This is a far cry from how a representative government is supposed to operate. Indeed, it has been a long time since we could claim to be the masters of our own lives. Rather, we are now the subjects of a militarized, corporate empire in which the vast majority of the citizenry work their hands to the bone for the benefit of a privileged few. Adding injury to the ongoing insult of having our tax dollars misused and our so-called representatives bought and paid for by the moneyed elite, the government then turns around and uses the money we earn with our blood, sweat and tears to target, imprison and entrap us, in the form of militarized police, surveillance cameras, private prisons, license plate readers, drones, and cell phone tracking technology. With every new tax, fine, fee and law adopted by our so-called representatives, the yoke around the neck of the average American seems to tighten just a little bit more. All of those nefarious deeds by government officials that you hear about every day: those are your tax dollars at work. It’s your money that allows for government agents to spy on your emails, your phone calls, your text messages, and your movements. It’s your money that allows out-of-control police officers to burst into innocent people’s homes, or probe and strip search motorists on the side of the road. And it’s your money that leads to Americans across the country being prosecuted for innocuous activities such as growing vegetable gardens in their front yards or daring to speak their truth to their elected officials. As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, this is not freedom, America. • Holocaust Memorial And Immigration - Hallandale Beach Has Taken A Strong Position When It Comes To Law And Order

Holocaust Memorial And Immigration - Hallandale Beach Has Taken A Strong Position When It Comes To Law And Order By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper January 29, 2025 Share This Monday was the 80th Anniversary of the Remembrance of the Holocaust. As a daughter of a WWII Veteran, it is also in my opinion to remember the many Veteran “Liberators.” (Pictured: Such as we do on Veteran's Day in Hallandale Beach) Yes, it is true that America sadly sat by the sidelines while the final solution was being conducted. Winston Churchill pleaded for our country to help Europe as they fought against Hitler and the Nazi Extremism. My father did not speak about the war until he himself was reaching his late seventies. He met a group of Holocaust survivors at an event at our wonderful Chabad. One of the survivors kindly reached out to get his attention and thanked him for being a WWII hero and helping to end the war and liberate the camps. Words cannot express how this changed my father’s view of WWII. He had carried his memories like many soldiers. They were too painful and guilt ridden. These few heartfelt words of thanks opened his heart and lifted the guilt he had from bombing his parents’ home country of Italy. He felt a weight lifted and was able to talk about his missions. He had gone on over fifty-four such bombings and bailed out twice, receiving two Purple Hearts. Over the past year watching the many misguided pro Palestinian youth I have recommitted myself to ensuring our younger generation is taught the facts about hatred and Antisemitism. I could only imagine the words my father would have for such ignorance. We are blessed to have the Holocaust Documentation and Educational Center minutes away in Dania Beach. Now that the survivors are passing away, we need to make sure their stories are remembered and told. The true stories and lessons surrounding how Nazis turned hatred of the Jew and other marginalized groups through propaganda and lies needs to be taught. It is the law in Florida that students are taught about the Holocaust. Since COVID-19 these efforts have been woefully short. I am partnering with the center and retired teacher and friend Marilyn Santiago to make sure our students visit the center in the coming months. If you want to help us, please reach out to me for more information. As Jews, we need to realize it does not matter if there are Republicans or Democrats in charge. We need all individuals to support the efforts against Antisemitism. We all dropped the ball when it came to our college campuses. Hate Speech is not Free Speech. It should be stopped, and every student should be able to feel safe at school. I personally agree that all public funding should be cut off from these institutions that are spreading lies and misinformation. My friend and former Mayor of Philadelphia teaches a class at Columbia. He 100 percent confirmed that most of these individuals were not students and simple agitators showing up, camping out and starting problems. The past week we have seen a world wind of change sweep across our country. It is a result of the election that was lost by the Democrats. Yes, it was close, but President Trump won. People are simply tired of the lack of common sense and failure of our institutions to uphold the law. The days of everyone should get a second chance and it is ok to break the laws is over. The pendulum has swung all too far. If you are here illegally, it is illegal. If you are a criminal, you should be in jail. If you are here illegally and a criminal, you should be in jail and sent back. That is only common sense. Either way the commitment to crackdown on undocumented immigrants is sending a chilling effect throughout every city in our nation. The weekend of the inauguration was also the winter leadership meeting of the US Mayors. Our key issues are housing, Infrastructure and immigration. As an organization we are non-partisan so many Mayors share varying positions on immigration. It needs to be made extremely clear that the super majority of cities are not “so called” sanctuary cities. Hallandale Beach has never been a sanctuary city. We swear to uphold the laws of our country, state and city. We have taken a strong position when it comes to law and order. If you break the law, you will be arrested. We make arrests but then criminals are booked into the Broward County system. The Broward County Sheriff’s Department executed an agreement with ICE in 2019. The question becomes are the rules being followed. The MOU between ICE and BSO constitutes an agreement between ICE and delegates to BSO personnel the authority to perform certain immigration enforcement functions as specified herein. The purpose of this collaboration is to promote public safety by facilitating the custodial transfer of specific aliens in BSO's jail correctional facilities to ICE for removal purposes at the time of the alien's scheduled release from criminal custody. I have set up a meeting with the Chief and City Manager to further educate myself on this extremely critical issue. Our main goal as a city is to keep our residents safe. As a smaller public safety organization, diluting our staffing levels for training and providing services not intended for local law enforcement could put our residents at risk. Our lane per say is fighting street crime, thefts, robbery, domestic violence and day to day policing. Obviously, if we catch an undocumented immigrant during an arrest they will go to jail and be reported to BSO. It is only the beginning. We will be keenly watching as rules and regulations are rolled out. We are also concerned about funding freezes and cuts to our Infrastructure programs. I will continue to keep our residents informed. As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place on my Phone/Text at: (954) 632-5700.
