Music Theater And Comedy: Just What We All Need As We Settle Into 2023

So how have the first two weeks of 2023 been going for you? Well The Broward Center For Performing Arts would like to keep you busy the second half of the month. A diverse schedule of productions are ready to take the stage as the Broward Center for the Performing Arts goes to the movies with one of the world’s leading astrophysicists, presents two Broadway tours, legendary comics, iconic musicians, celebrations of some of the greatest rock and roll bands and family theater. Here is the run down for the rest of January.

The driving force behind the progressive metal band Queensryche, Geoff Tate performs in the Amaturo Theater on Saturday, January 14th, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. This Grammy Nominated Singer/Songwriter is regarded as one of the most skilled vocalists in the genre with hundreds of modern, popular artists citing him and his former band as a major influence. Combining social consciousness and expertly crafted lyrics with high-energy, melodically complex music, Queensryche with Tate at the forefront became internationally recognized as the thinking man's rock band and has sold over 20 million albums worldwide. Tickets are $59.50-$89.50.

Broadway favorite Tina – The Tina Turner Musical comes to the Au-Rene Theater from Tuesday, January 17th, 2023 - Sunday, January 29th, 2023. Her voice is undeniable. Her fire is unstoppable. Her triumph is unlike any other. An uplifting comeback story like no other, Tina – The Tina Turner Musical is the inspiring journey of a woman who broke barriers and became the queen of Rock N’ Roll. One of the world’s best-selling artists of all time, Tina Turner has won 12 Grammy Awards and her live shows have been seen by millions, with more concert tickets sold than any other solo performer in music history. Featuring her much loved songs, Tina – The Tina Turner Musical is written by Pulitzer Prize–Winning Playwright Katori Hall and directed by the internationally acclaimed Phyllida Lloyd. Performance times are Tuesday - Friday at 8:00 p.m., Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. and at 6:30 pm. Tickets begin at $36.

Prolific Guitarist and two-time Grammy Nominee Leo Kottke brings his unrivaled fingerpicking style to the Amaturo Theater on Friday, January 20th, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. After recording more than 40 albums over four decades, Kottke boasts an impressive body drawing inspiration from Folk, Blues and Jazz. He is known for playing his signature 6-string and 12-string guitars with effortless aptitude, a big heart and an even bigger grin. After his first major-label debut with Mudlark, he flourished during his tenure on Capitol records with such hits as Greenhouse, My Feet Are Smiling and Ice Water before reaching the U.S. Top 30 for the second time with Chewing Pine. His collaboration with Phish bassist Mike Gordon, Clone, caught audiences' attention in 2002. Kottke and Gordon followed with a recording in the Bahamas called Sixty Six Steps, produced by Kottke’s old friend and Prince Producer David Z. Tickets are $35-$65.

The Truist Comedy Series presents Comedian Dave Nihill for two shows of real Irish comedy in the Abdo New River Room on Friday, January 20th, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Leaving Dublin, Ireland where he was born and raised until the age of 22, Nihill has lived and worked in 12 countries and visited over 70. His shows draw on his wide travels, cultural observations, attempts at language study, (occasional) international drinking sessions and being a mildly confused immigrant. He is the winner of the prestigious annual San Francisco Comedy Competition (previous finalists include Robin Williams, Ellen DeGeneres and Dana Carvey) and runner up in the Moth's largest U.S. grand slam storytelling competition. He recorded his debut special for Dry Bar Comedy in 2019 and has been featured on, among others, visit: https://www.ted.com/ Amazon Prime Video, Sirius XM, NPR and the Huffington Post. This event contains content that is not suitable for children 12 years and under. Tickets are $30-$40.

One of the most sought after and highly regarded tribute bands comes to the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts with Rumours - A Fleetwood Mac Tribute on Saturday, January 21st, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. Selling out shows to standing room only crowds, the band has wowed fans at venues including The Fillmore in Charlotte, North Carolina, Daryl's House in Pawling, New York owned by Music Icon Daryl Hall, Epcot Center in Disney World, 3TEN at Austin City Limits and multiple Live Nation venues. Tickets are $50-$60.

In the 23rd year of touring, International Guitar Night comes to the Amaturo Theater as part of the 2022/2023 TD Bank Jazz Series on Sunday, January 22nd, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. The evening will include Canadian Jazz Guitarist and Vocalist Jocelyn Gould, who received the 2021 Juno Award for “Jazz Album of the Year.” She will be joined by Flamenco master Jesus Guerrero from Spain; Contemporary Classical Guitarist Stephanie Jones, Gypsy and Jazz Guitarist Olli Soikkeli from Finland. Tickets are $35 - $45.

The Broward Center and AEG Presents brings Dave Mason in his 2022 World In Changes Tour to the Amauro Theater on Wednesday, January 25th, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. Best known for his soulful voice and unsurpassed guitar playing, Mason was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame as a founding member of the group Traffic and continues performing as a Solo Artist with sold-out shows. His career encompasses his work as a Producer, Performer, Songwriter and Consummate Guitarist including collaborations with Jimi Hendrix, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton and others. Tickets are $49.50-$99.50.

Justin Hayward, the driving force behind the music and success of The Moody Blues, performs in the Amaturo Theater on January 26th, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. in a concert presented by the Broward Center and AEG Presents. A Guitarist of great skill and a unique sound, Hayward has an amazing gift for crafting a tune and turning a phrase. Hayward penned such timeless tunes as "Tuesday Afternoon," "The Voice," "Your Wildest Dreams" and "Nights In White Satin," which regularly ranks in the lists of all-time favorite songs, including a place in the top ten songs of the millennium. Tickets are $49.50-$89.50 with $199.50 VIP Tickets offering a seat in the first five rows and exclusive merchandise.

Twice named "New Age Artist of the Year" by Billboard Magazine, five-time Grammy Award Nominee and Nouveau Flamenco Guitarist, Ottmar Liebert returns with his dynamic Band Luna Negra to perform in the Abdo New River Room on Thursday, January 26th, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. With a richly textured and sensuous musical style described as "poetic sunshine at midnight," Liebert is considered one of the most successful instrumental artists of the past two decades and has released 25 albums and earned 38 Gold and Platinum certifications in his remarkable career. Known worldwide for his innovative contemporary style, this "million-fingered" guitar master incorporates Rock, Jazz and Pop Music influences to redefine the art form with classical yet futurist and evocative music. Tickets for this concert presented by the Broward Center and AEG Presents are $79.50 with $115.50 VIP Tickets that include a meet & greet with the artist.

One of the most creative forces on the acoustic music scene today, Susan Werner comes to the Abdo New River Room at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, January 27th, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. Known for her engaging energetic live show, she has been dubbed by National Public Radio as the “Empress of the Unexpected” for the variety of her album projects that cover Folk, Rock, Pop, Gospel, Blues and Americana. She also is credited as the composer and lyricist of Broadway bound Bull Durham, The Musical. Tickets are $35-$40.

Presented by the Broward Center and AEG Presents, Big Band of Brothers, a jazz celebration of the Allman Brothers, comes to the Amaturo Theater on Friday, January 27th, 2023 at 8:00 p.m. as part of the 2022/2023 TD Bank Jazz Series. Released in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Allman Brothers Band’s debut, this album of jazz interpretations of Allman Brothers Band (ABB) favorites will be recreated live by “joyful jazz” group Sammy Miller and The Congregation joined by founding ABB member Jaimoe, Drummer Jai Johanny Johanson, alongside local brass sections. Also joining will be Vocalist Lamar Williams, Jr., Son of ABB bassist Lamar Williams and Current Vocalist for The New Mastersounds and slide guitarist Drew Smithers, Student of former ABB guitarist Jack Pearson. The Allman Brothers Band Museum in Macon, Georgia known as The Big House will be along for the ride setting up a mobile exhibit at the Broward Center showcasing some of the largest collection of ABB memorabilia in the world. Tickets are $52.50-$89.50.

Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital presents the Family Fun Series performances of Acoustic Rooster's Barnyard Boogie in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, January 28th, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. New York Times best-selling author Kwame Alexander brings two of his beloved children's books, Acoustic Rooster and Indigo Blume, to the stage in this Kennedy Center commission. Alexander teams up with his writing partner Mary Rand Hess and long-time musical collaborator Randy Preston to tell a story about being scared, being brave, and believing in yourself. With special guests like Duke Ellington and Ms. Dolly Parton—this musical adaptation promises to have children (and families) dancing in their seats. Each ticket includes pre-show activities and are $16 in advance and $18 the day of the performance with $3 lap tickets for children 12 months of age and younger.

The Second City Swipes Right: An Incomplete Guide to the Ultimate Date Night brings the legendary improv troupe to the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, January 28th, 2023 at 8:30 p.m. It's love at first laugh with The Second City as they offer a brand-new experience to those who are spectacularly single, partners, lovers, significant others, spouses, friends with benefits, friends with EXTRA benefits and platonic BFFs. Presented as part of the Truist Comedy Series, this event contains content that is not suitable for children 12 years and under. Tickets are $45.

Also in January will be the Shelly Berg Trio on Wednesday, January 18th, 2023 and Quick2Love Foundation, INC. presents #ANNIFLO'ETRY on Saturday, January 21st, 2023.
