With Pride Month Underway Across The Nation, Fort Lauderdale’s Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library (SNMAL) Brings Iconic History Back To Life, With The Museum’s Annual Stonewall Uprising Reenactment Returning June 28Th With The Powerful Message That The Fight Continues.
“LGBTQ+ rights and lives are under attack, and we need the courage and spirit of those who fought back in 1969 to keep those freedoms from being extinguished today,” stated Robert Kesten, Stonewall National Museum President and CEO. “This yearly reenactment is not a game or entertainment- it reminds us of what our community had to do if we were to live freely in our own country. Like the struggles for Women's and Civil Rights, these battles are ongoing and essential for a just future.”
Originally started in 2024, SNMAL’s first reenactment welcomed Peabody and GLAAD-Award Winner Kristen Lovell of HBO docu-film ‘The Stroll’ as Gay Liberation Activist Marsha P. Johnson, as well as saw South Florida police departments making several ‘arrests’ after ‘breaking into’ the Stonewall INN Stonewall Exhibit. The event’s cultural connection was cemented through the use of 1969 musical classics, including Aquarius/Let the Sunshine in, which brought attendees back in time to the famous night.
Since then, the reenactment has become a staple of the Museum’s Pride Month festivities, showcasing the organization’s commitment to protecting LGBTQ+ Community history, as well as how we can connect it to modern day and learn from its lessons.
“The reenactment is an annual event because the fight never ends for minority and marginalized communities. The struggle that keeps the world bending towards justice is ongoing and knowing history keeps us engaged and tied to those who came before us."
“The United States government's current efforts to deny equal rights can’t be understated. We are living through a pivotal moment in global history, and as difficult as it may be, we need to keep fighting back for ourselves and our loved ones. We want this reenactment to be a much-needed boost of inspiration and hope, especially during such an emotional-taxing point in history.”
