Conference In New Orleans: Combating Antisemitism And Commemorating October 7th

By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper

Dec 2, 2025

As I Am Preparing To Attend A Conference In New Orleans With Mayors From Around The Country, I Can Now Write And Release Information About The Event. Sadly, Details Have Been Under Strict Security Measures Until Recently Due To The Continued Growth In Antisemitism.

I was actually invited a few months ago to attend this year’s annual Combatting Antisemitism Movement Summit by the immediate past Israel Counsel General of Miami. With the increase in antisemitic acts since October 7th they have been keenly focused internationally and here in the states urging the importance of calling out hate in today’s world.

Antisemitism remains a grave challenge in many societies, manifesting in prejudice, discrimination, and violence against Jewish communities. The conference in New Orleans is bringing together Mayors, scholars, and leaders from diverse backgrounds to address these issues.

For two days, we will share our recent experiences and shared strategies for creating a greater understanding of root causes of hatred and ways to change mindsets. Our shared goal remained sharing tools and strategies to counter hate and promote inclusivity.

Key topics will include the history of antisemitism, the role of education in prevention, promoting interfaith dialogue, and leveraging social media for positive change. The conference is aimed to equip participants with tools and networks to continue the fight against antisemitism in their communities.

During the trip, I will share what measures Hallandale Beach has implemented since October 7th. Our City Manager and Chief of Police has remained vigilant in addressing safety and security at our houses of worship.

We have had a few incidents. While none have been violent, they still have been unsettling. Our commission has been vocal advocates both from the dais and through social media against hate and misinformation.

To show support of Israel, we adopted a sister city, Sderot which was one of the cities and areas hardest hit by the brutal attacks on October 7th. Commissioner Annabelle Lima Taub facilitated this relationship.

We hosted an Arts show from the children of Sderot and a memorial for all the victims of this brutal attack. The art was a therapeutic exercise for the children that experience the attacks.

Last year, I asked that we consider naming a street after Sderot and placing a memorial plaque in memory of October 7th. After receiving approvals a date for this special event has been scheduled on Thursday, January 15th. Due to security, we have a limited amount of seats available and the specific details of the event will only be released to those that have rsvp.

This street's renaming is symbolic, representing both a literal and figurative path towards unity and progress. Such dedications often serve as public reminders of the values a community holds dear and also reinforced that the horrific unprovoked attack on the State of Israel will not be forgotten.

The ceremony is expected to bring together local officials, community members, and representatives from various organizations. It will highlight the significance of the street.

This trip to New Orleans promises to be both meaningful and impactful, combining the urgent work of combating antisemitism with the honoring of historical events and community milestones.

Through participation in the conference and attendance at the dedication ceremonies, I hope to contribute to a broader movement of remembrance, education, and positive change.
