Glass Scholarship Breakfast. The theme was Bridging the Generational Gap with Diversity. In attendance was Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, State Representative Marie Woodson, School Board Member Maura McCarthy Bulman, Hollywood Commissioner Caryl Shuham and Dr. Valerie Smith Wanza Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer at Broward County Public Schools. Elder Katrice Johnson of The Vision Center was the Mistress of Ceremony along with High School Black Student Union president, Ms. Arsimmer McCoy Smith. The keynote address and spoken word were by Keyera Lyn, Miss Black Florida USA 2025, and who is in the alumni class of 2015 at our Hallandale Beach High School. In support of Miss Black Florida USA were her sorority sisters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. Among other speakers that gave words of empowerment were Pastor Wayne Allen Sr. of Greater Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, who gave an insightful call to action on the importance of how we bridge the gap. Pastor Jamaal McClain of Logos New Birth Faith Tabernacle Church, who charged attendees with reaching new heights in our communities. Past president of the HBCCCA, Qunea Gordon, introduced her guest, Teriyah McFadden who gave “A Moment in Black History Tribute.” Teriyah McFadden is a standout junior in high school all-around student athlete under the direction of Coach Antwon Chaney of West Express Ladies Flag Football. At just 17 years old, she inspired the audience as she made her first of many impacts in history, in South Florida as the first girl to receive a Name, Image and Likeness deal as a junior in high school. She holds a 4.2 GPA and encourages everyone to “Look up to yourself.” Teriyah will also receive recognition at our March 5th City Commission Meeting as we present her with a proclamation during Women’s History Month. Mrs. Glass was a pioneer, a Hallandale Beach native and affiliated with St. Anne’s Episcopal Church. Mrs. Glass had a love for education and ensured all children would reach their highest potential. She was dedicated to making sure all graduates received some type of monetary assistance when they graduated from High School. Because of her tireless efforts, Mrs. Glass was often recognized with very prestigious awards throughout her community advocacy, even being dubbed, “the unofficial Mayor” of the Northwest community! Our City Commission met last week with three separate meetings on Wednesday, February 19th. The Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, Three Islands Safe Neighborhood District, and regular City Commission meeting. In the HBCRA, meeting we heard from our local restaurant owner, Tanika Evans, Owner of our local Firehouse Subs on East Hallandale Beach, she was awarded a Restaurant Rent Emergency Stability Grant. You may recall that I wrote about our CRA programs, and I am happy that not only is our CRA providing solutions but meeting the needs of our business community in a proactive way. She was recognized by City Manager Dr. Jeremy Earle as the first African American woman to own a Firehouse Subs franchise in the nation, making history right here in our Hallandale Beach. Special presentations of the Khojaly Remembrance Day Proclamation sponsored by me as well as an End Jew Hatred proclamation sponsored by Commissioner Anabelle Lima-Taub, co-sponsored by myself & Vice Mayor Michele Lazarow. While antisemitism continues to rise it is important as ever to continue to support organizations that promote Jewish education and preserve Jewish history. The Holocaust Documentation & Education Center, Inc. (HDEC), which has been in existence for the past 45 years, is a nonsectarian, Non-Profit Organization dedicated and devoted to documenting the authentic memory of the Holocaust and educating today's generation about the evils and dangers of hatred, bigotry, and bullying. Battling Bites: An Owner’s Survival Guide To Tick And Flea Season South Florida Sun Times Jun 11, 2026 Fleas And Ticks Are Most Active During Warm, Humid Weather, Making Late Spring And Summer A Peak Time For These Pests To Wreak Havoc On The Comfort Of Pets And Owners Alike. Fortunately, There Are Many Preventative Measures Owners Take To Safeguard Their Pets Against An Invasion Of These Crawling Critters. Dr. Erin Ray, a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, offers tips for owners on choosing the best flea and tick preventive method for their pets. Unwelcome Arrivals For fleas and ticks to grow, seasonal conditions must be optimal for them to thrive in their environment. “Many ticks and fleas typically slow their development or retreat into microhabitats to survive colder temperatures,” Ray said. “As the weather warms, they resume their growth and reproduction, leading to increased encounters with humans and animals in warmer climates.” Among the more common prevention methods that can protect pets against flea and tick exposure are: pills, topical solutions and collars, as well as chewables, which often include the added benefit of protecting against heartworms and intestinal parasites. However, a new prevention option is also gaining popularity for dogs: an injectable treatment. “The injectable flea and tick control product — available solely for dogs — specifically targets the common flea and multiple species of ticks,” Ray said. “It is administered under the skin by a veterinarian and provides a slow, steady release of the active ingredient. After the injection, fleas and ticks must bite your pet and ingest the product in order for it to work.” This option is specifically labeled for dogs and puppies over 6 months of age, according to Ray. “Overall, the injectable treatment offers a convenient alternative that reduces the risk of missed doses and helps maintain continuous protection for your pet,” Ray said. “However, this product should be used with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurological conditions.” Choosing A Preventative When deciding which option is best for your pet, owners should properly research the products. “Each type comes with its own advantages and disadvantages — varying in safety, effectiveness, convenience, and cost,” Ray said. “However, not all products are created equal — some over-the-counter treatments can be toxic to cats and dogs, and even certain prescription products might not be the best choice for your pet.” In addition to a pet’s health, an owner’s schedule, financial means, or specific concerns may also influence the decision. “When it comes to prevention, topical treatments or medicated collars are commonly used methods,” Ray said. “However, extra care needs to be taken in households with children or adults with potential health concerns to ensure they don’t come into contact with these products after application. “In addition, when using a topical solution, be wary of the appropriate application areas — such as the nape of the neck or between the shoulder blades,” Ray said. “This can help prevent pets from licking the treatment off of themselves that could lead to potential toxicity.” If an owner determines a collar is the best course of action, it is vital to ensure that pets cannot chew through the product. Finally, when considering oral treatments, Ray notes that these may eliminate concerns related to bathing schedules and the risk of human exposure associated with topical products, oftentimes making them a safer and more hassle-free option for many households. “Oral flea and tick treatments offer great convenience for pet owners, especially those that combine protection against fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal parasites in a single dose,” Ray said. “Many of the newer formulations are highly effective at controlling flea and tick populations on your pet. However, some oral products contain flavorings that may trigger allergies in sensitive animals.” These can also be more costly per dose, and certain medications should be avoided in pets with a history of neurological conditions. For the safest and most effective protection, it’s always best to consult your veterinarian before using any flea and tick product — including over-the-counter options — to ensure it is suited to your pet’s species and health needs. Environmental Considerations A pet’s environment is another important factor to consider during flea and tick season. “Where your pet lives and whether they travel can significantly influence their risk of encountering fleas and different species of ticks,” Ray said. “Additionally, certain activities or jobs — such as hunting dogs, outdoor cats, or pets living in wooded areas — can increase their exposure to these parasites.” Even pets that only go outside briefly for walks or bathroom breaks can still come into contact with fleas or ticks. Humans may also inadvertently bring these pests into the home on shoes, clothing, or other items. “Oftentimes, the environment needs to be managed for flea infestations,” Ray said. “Multiple life stages of the flea are oftentimes in furniture, cracks of floors, rugs, and where the animals spend most of their time.” Treating an environment may include: • Regular vacuuming • Washing bedding frequently • Treating surfaces of concern with appropriate products Taking multi-pronged preventive measures is essential in order to combat the population of these invaders. Eliminating fleas can take multiple weeks — or even months — to clear them all. “Please consult with a veterinary professional prior to using over-the-counter products in your house or yard to ensure appropriateness and safety for any humans or animals in the environment,” Ray said. Waiting until fleas and ticks are widespread can put a damper on the excitement for the summer season. To best protect pets, owners should take a proactive approach and choose a veterinarian-approved prevention plan so their pets can safely enjoy the sunny season. The FDA Is Moving Faster On Psychedelics By Peter J. Pitts Aug 27, 2026 Every 11 Minutes, An American Dies By Suicide. Millions More Struggle To Manage Their Mental Health, Cycling Through Medications, Therapy, And Hospital Visits Without Finding Relief. In April, the FDA took a decisive step toward addressing this prolonged health emergency. In response to President Trump's recent executive order, the agency announced plans to expedite review of certain psychedelic medicines for serious mental health conditions. It's about time. America's mental health crisis condemns millions to daily suffering. The government should not let psychedelic medicines languish in regulatory limbo. Science-backed psychedelic treatments should be evaluated with the same urgency as other promising medicines. Nearly a quarter of U.S. adults suffer from a mental illness. Depression affects one in five adults -- a historic high. Today's standard of care often falls short. Most widely prescribed medications rely on mechanisms developed decades ago and often take weeks to produce modest effects, if they work at all. At least 30% of patients with major depressive disorder don't respond to multiple courses of antidepressant treatment. About half of patients receiving antidepressants reported being dissatisfied with the results. It is against this backdrop that a new class of treatments -- psychedelic compounds such as psilocybin -- has begun to attract serious scientific and regulatory attention. Once dismissed as fringe, researchers are now investigating these medicines in clinical trials under strict federal oversight. The FDA granted breakthrough therapy designation to several psilocybin-based treatments in 2018 and 2019. Today, there are more than 120 clinical trials underway. The New England Journal of Medicine recently published the results of the largest-ever clinical trial for psilocybin-based medicine. A single dose of the medicine led to a significant improvement in depressive symptoms in just three weeks. Skepticism is understandable. Psychedelics carry cultural baggage, and patients may have questions about safety. But the public debate around these compounds too often conflates recreational drug use with regulated medical use. The psilocybin medicines under review would not pave the way to casual access. If approved, they would be prescribed by licensed clinicians, administered in controlled healthcare settings, and subject to the same high standards that govern any FDA-approved drug. There is plenty of precedent for this approach. A ketamine-derived medicine is legally available for certain patients with treatment-resistant depression -- but only in approved clinical settings. Once the FDA approves a psychedelic-based medicine, the Drug Enforcement Administration must reschedule the substance before it can become available to patients -- another step in the process that should happen swiftly and in coordination with the FDA. None of this requires lowering scientific standards. It demands that regulators and researchers apply those standards without bias -- evaluating new medicines based on evidence, not assumptions. For too long, America's mental health system has forced patients to endure a trial-and-error treatment process that often leads nowhere. The FDA's announcement offers a different way forward that takes the urgency of this crisis and the potential of new science seriously. Peter J. To Censor or Not To Censor - A History Lesson: “Parental Rights in Education Bill” Dubbed The “Don’t Say Gay” Bill April 14, 2022 Share One of the hot news stories is the Bill in Florida banning the discussion of Sexual Orientations or Gender Identities in Elementary Schools. The bill is called “Parental Rights in Education Bill” but has been dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” Bill. This, of course, has led to a national debate about censorship, decency and age appropriateness. This is not the first of this discussion as schools are passing similar laws against issues like “Critical Race Theory” and taking books off school library shelves deemed inappropriate. As always, this column does not propose to answer any of these debates, but, historically speaking, censorship is not new and looking at historical examples which may help us make more informed decisions today. Actual laws allowing for censorship are in no way new. President John Adams signed the Alien and Sedition Acts into law which fined or arrested anyone speaking out against the Government. President Woodrow Wilson signed a similar Sedition Act. Lincoln did not sign a Sedition Law, he just locked everyone up who spoke out against him, claiming it as a war measure. Yet, I want to focus on a particularly difficult time when censorship was rampant and to consider how one particular President handled the situation. The year was 1950 and America was embroiled in the Red Scare, where we were suspecting Communists were hiding under our beds and in our closets. Granted, this was not just paranoia, as communists had infiltrated American Agencies and Organizations. Before 1950, The House Un-American Activities Committee had already held trials to stamp out Communists in the movie business and created the infamous blacklists. In this same year, a little-known Senator from Wisconsin gave a speech in West Virginia, claiming to have a list of Communists who were working for the State Department. Overnight, Joseph McCarthy became famous and McCarthyism was born. McCarthyism is often compared to a witch hunt, especially after the release of "The Crucible," but there is one stark difference: there were no ghosts in Salem but there were Communists in the Government. However, what McCarthy did was greatly exaggerate the situation for personal gain and created a frenzy in this nation to rid all aspects of Communism from everywhere. One area where McCarthyism focused its attacks were libraries, especially the State Department’s overseeing libraries. In April 1953, two of McCarthy’s Chief Staffers, Roy Cohn and David Schine, took a tour of Europe, attacking the books in the libraries and the State Department Officials who ran them. After the tour, the State Department issued a list of which books were appropriate and which were not. While some of these books were overtly Communist, most were not. Some were banned simply because an author who was not a Communist would not publicly reject Communism. President Eisenhower was in a tough position. He did not agree with McCarthy, but they were in the same party and McCarthy held a great deal of power. Eisenhower refused to tangle with McCarthy publicly, as it was his policy not to debate any opponent publicly, possibly his greatest character trait and one I wish modern presidents could mimic. Yet finally the President had had enough. On June 14th, 1953, while speaking at Dartmouth College, he took up the idea of Censorship. After speaking about having fun and joy in life, he spoke about courage. He ended that part of his speech with: “Don't join the book burners. Don't think you are going to conceal faults by concealing evidence that they ever existed. Don't be afraid to go into your library and read every book, as long as that document does not offend our own ideas of decency. That should be the only censorship. “How will we defeat Communism unless we know what it is and what it teaches and why does it have such an appeal for men? Why are so many people swearing allegiance to it?” “And we have got to fight it with something better, not try to conceal the thinking of our own people. They are part of America. And even if they think ideas that are contrary to ours, their right to say them, their right to record them and their right to have them at places where they are accessible to others is unquestioned, or it isn't America.” When asked about his statements a couple of days later at a press conference, Ike added, “When I talk about books or the right of dissemination of knowledge, am I [not] talking about any document or any other kind of thing that attempts to persuade or propagandize America into Communism? Indeed, our courts found 11 Communists guilty of practically treasonous action; they pointed out that these men were dedicated to the destruction of the United States’ form of Government by force and that they took orders from a Foreign Government. So, manifestly, I am not talking about that kind of thing when I talk about free access to knowledge.” As an academic, I agree with President Eisenhower that information should not scare us. He went on to say that if more Americans had read Mein Kompf, we might have been better prepared to stop Hitler, so reading more about why people were attracted to Communism might not be a bad thing. But notice that Ike did make two exemptions: those that “offend our own ideas of decency” and those that “persuade or propagandize.” For myself I would add "age appropriateness." Think about our movie ratings. Most PG-13 Movies are not bad, but they are not age appropriate for younger children to learn about yet or without parents’ approval. I know this is a difficult subject. We have been fighting it for years. When it comes to our children, we will probably never stop fighting it. Eisenhower warned us against Censorship, but he also believed there were certain things that should not be read. From Thursday, June 19th – Sunday, July 13th, The Public Is Invited To View The FREE Companion Exhibition, Zorita’s World, Featuring Photography Highlights From The Life And Career Of Famed Burlesque Dancer, Icon And LGBTQ+ Advocate Zorita, Plus “Last Call South Florida - A History Of 1001 LGBTQ-Friendly Taverns, Haunts & Hangouts” By Fred Fejes And Rick Karlin, Along With Costumes And Other Historical Artifacts. “We are proud to honor this year’s LGBTQ+ advocates whose leadership, advocacy for equality and contributions to the South Florida political, business and arts landscapes are revered and innumerable,” said Patricia Zeiler, Executive Director of History Fort Lauderdale. “South Florida has prospered and grown on the wings of their commitment to inclusivity and acceptance for all. We are grateful for their perseverance and sharing their stories so that we may continue to champion diversity in our city and beyond.” The 2025 “Take PRIDE!” Honorees who have made significant contributions to the South Florida community are: Steve Glassman, City of Fort Lauderdale District 2 Commissioner; the Honorable Robert Lee retired Judge; Scott Holland, Vice President of Operations and Associate Publisher of HotSpots! Magazine and Happening Out Network; Michael Berry, Complex General Manager at The Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort; FayWhat?! Albernas, of The FayWhat?! Show on the Happening Out Television Network; Velvet Lenore, Entertainer and Philanthropist; T.P. Lords, Entertainer and Choreographer; Tony Lima, CEO and Executive Director, SunServe; Franchesca D’Amore, Founding President and Executive Director of TransEd and Ed Hashek, Arts Advocate and Philanthropist. The Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort “Take PRIDE!” 2025 exhibit will feature photos and ephemera from Zorita’s World, the life and career of famed burlesque dancer and icon Zorita, as well as her same-sex relationships and networks of friends. The performer and entrepreneur pushed boundaries in Miami and beyond in the 1940’s, ‘50s and ‘60s - a time when so much of what she did was often controversial and illegal. Today, perhaps more than ever, her legacy and influence offer important lessons on the power of individuals in shaping history and making necessary waves towards progress. Also featured will be selections from “Last Call South Florida - A History of 1001 LGBTQ-Friendly Taverns, Haunts & Hangouts” by Fred Fejes and Rick Karlin, Co-Curated by Ellery Andrews, Deputy Director at History Fort Lauderdale and Julio Capó, Jr., an Author and Associate Professor of History at Florida International University. “Galleria Fort Lauderdale is grateful for the support and sense of community that this year’s ‘Take Pride!’ honorees have fostered,” said Melissa Milroy, Senior Marketing Manager at Galleria Fort Lauderdale. “Our city’s remarkable growth is due, in part, to the contributions of these illustrious and dedicated community leaders who strive to ensure equality and representation. Capó curated a different exhibition on Zorita’s life in 2024 for Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library. The exhibition, located near Swarovski, between Macy’s and Dillard’s, will be free and open to the public during mall hours.
