- Holiday Shopping Safety Tips from the Hollywood Police Department
Holiday Shopping Safety Tips from the Hollywood Police Department December 12, 2024 Share The holiday season is a time for joy, togetherness, and generosity, as we exchange gifts and support meaningful causes. However, the hustle and bustle of crowded stores and enticing online deals come with their own set of challenges. During this festive period, thieves and scammers often look for opportunities to exploit the spirit of giving. To help protect your purchases and donations, the Hollywood Police Department offers these tips to ensure your holiday giving stays merry and secure: Shopping in Stores • Do not buy more than you can carry. Plan to take someone with you or ask a store employee to help you carry your packages to the car. • Consider alternate options to pay for your merchandise, such as one-time or multi-use disposable credit cards or money orders. • Wait until asked before taking out your credit card or checkbook. An enterprising thief would love to shoulder surf to get your account information. • Tell a security guard or store employee if you see an unattended bag or package. The same applies if you are using mass transit or walking to and from your car. • Deter pickpockets. Carry your purse close to your body or your wallet inside a coat or front trouser pocket. • Carry only the credit cards you need and avoid carrying large amounts of cash. • When shopping with small children, keep them close to you and make a plan in case you are separated from each other. Select a central meeting place and teach them how to identify mall personnel or security if they need help. • Teach children to never leave the store until you find one another. • When parking your vehicle to go shopping, remember where you parked it! • Always park in a well-lit and well-traveled area. Do not park in a remote dark area. • Have your keys in hand when approaching your vehicle. You will be ready to unlock the door and will not be delayed by fumbling and looking for your keys. • When you return to your vehicle, scan the interior of your car to be sure no one is hiding inside. Check to see if you are being followed. • Do not leave packages visible in your car windows. When storing items purchased at the stores, place them out of sight. The best place is in a locked trunk or, if possible, take them directly home. • Do not leave any valuables (i.e. your purse, wallet, or cellular telephone) in plain view in your vehicle. • Lock your vehicle and put up your windows, even while you are driving. • If you go to an automatic teller machine (ATM) for cash, check for people around you and make sure it is well-lit and in a safe location. • Drive defensively. Traffic is heavier during the holidays. Drivers may also have overindulged in holiday spirits. Shopping Online • When shopping online, it’s wise to pay with a credit card instead of a debit card if possible. Both allow you to dispute a charge if the merchandise never arrives or is different from what was ordered, however with a debit card, the price will have already been deducted from your bank account and it will take time to get your money back. • When ordering online, look to ensure your browser is a secure connection. In the address bar, a padlock should appear if your browsing session is secure. • Some credit card providers offer one-time card numbers to be used for online transactions to further protect your financial information. Contact your financial institution to see if they offer such a service. • Keep your personal information safe. Never provide your credit card, bank account information or social security number to a stranger. No reputable vendor or service provider will ever initiate a call and ask you for this information over the phone. • Save all receipts. Print and save all confirmations from your online purchases. Start a file folder to keep all receipts together and to help you verify credit card or bank statements as they come in. • Beware of the "good deal" scams. Things are not always what they appear to be. Holiday Charity Scams • Be sure the charity is legitimate. Check to see if they are a registered charity with the State Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services at: www.fdacs.gov/Consumer-Resources/Charities - Or by calling: 1 (800) HELP-FLA. While there, be sure you check to understand how much of the donation will actually go toward the work of the charity as opposed to administrative expenses. • Contact the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance at: http://give.org - Or by calling: (703) 247-9321 to determine if the charity you are donating to has any complaints against them. • Watch for similar-sounding charities. It’s not unusual for scam artists to choose names that sound like the names of legitimate, widely known charities. • Never give your credit card number or bank account information to a caller on the phone or someone who sent you an unsolicited email. If you are interested in donating to a charity that has initiated contact with you, ask them to send you a pledge form and information about the charity in the mail. Legitimate charities should have no problem with this request. • Most tax-exempt organizations are also required to file an annual return or notice with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The IRS Code requires automatic revocation of a charity’s tax-exempt status (some charities are exempt from this requirement) if it fails to file a return for three consecutive years. Publication of an organization’s name on the Auto Revocation list on the IRS website helps potential donors determine the status of a charity. To learn more about the tax-exempt status of a charity, go to www.irs.gov and search the Charities and Non-Profits topics. • By keeping these essential tips in mind, you can protect your identity, steer clear of scams, and shop with confidence, ensuring a joyful, safe, and stress-free holiday season. For additional safety advice and resources from the Hollywood Police Department, visit: www.hollywoodpolice.org . - Covering Basic Expenses With Credit Cards Adds To The Growing Debt Cycle | sun-times
Covering Basic Expenses With Credit Cards Adds To The Growing Debt Cycle By Feature Impact Sep 17, 2026 For Many Americans, Credit Cards Were Once Reserved For Emergencies, Major Purchases Or Added Security When Shopping Online. However, Today, People Are Increasingly Relying On Credit Cards And Unsecured Debt To Cover Basic Everyday Expenses Like Groceries. According to a survey of 2,000 U.S. adults with at least $10,000 in unsecured debt conducted by Atomik Research on behalf of Accredited Debt Relief, a Debt Consolidation Company specializing in unsecured debt relief, credit cards are no longer just a financial convenience but a tool for managing the rising cost of everyday necessities. In fact, 66% of respondents reported having used a credit card to cover the cost of groceries within the last year. Other essentials aren't far behind: 47% said they've used it for gas or transportation, 45% for utilities and 33% for rent or housing costs. How Everyday Expenses Turn into Long-Term Debt Debt builds over time when credit becomes part of monthly operations. For those struggling with cost-of-living pressures, using a credit card to cover groceries or utility bills may seem manageable in the moment. When the unexpected happens - a car repair, medical bill or unusually high energy bill - however, the balance adds up for the 46% of respondents who take on additional debt at least most of the time an emergency occurs and, without an executable plan for repaying it, could shorten the runway for taking care of such expenses in the future. Because nearly 3 in 10 survey respondents rely on credit or borrowing just to get through a typical month, the data suggests what may have been a stopgap has become a routine part of managing personal finances. In fact, one-third of survey respondents said they depend on credit more than they did a year ago. Lack of a Financial Cushion Makes Paying Down Debt Difficult Breaking the debt cycle becomes especially difficult without emergency savings. Only 28% of respondents say they can cover expenses and save. Additionally, 45% reported their income is enough to get by but not get ahead. Many said they've even put off taking a vacation or saving for the future due to their financial situations. When each paycheck is already committed to existing bills - 29% of respondents listed the cost of everyday expenses as the biggest barrier to reducing debt - making meaningful progress toward paying down debts becomes more difficult. The Emotional Cost of Carrying Debt Financial stress affects more than just the household budget. The survey found 25% of respondents are concerned about their financial future, with 12% worried they're facing long-term financial instability. What's more, nearly 7 in 10 said their current debt situation has negatively affected their mental well-being. Without meaningful changes, whether through increased income, debt relief or financial support, these households may continue to rely on unsecured credit as a necessity rather than a strategic financial tool or occasional supplement. Jay and The Americans January 14, 2022 Share Jay and the Americans take the stage Jan 28th singing all their hits: “This Magic Moment,” “Cara Mia,” “Come a Little Bit Closer,” “Some Enchanted Evening,” “Walkin’ in the Rain,” “Only in America,” “She Cried” and more. With a staggering 18 charted hits and five Top 10 records, few bands ever reached the heights of Jay and the Americans. The group features three original Americans – Sandy Deanne, Marty Sanders and Howie Kane – joined by the powerhouse lead of Chicago native Jay Reincke, who has fronted the group for the last 13 years. A full band with live brass will recreate all the magic moments and the special memories created by their decade-long string of hits. This performance is on sale at full capacity without physical distancing limitations. Ticket purchasers will be notified of up-to-date Healthy & Safety Guidelines prior to each performance. Jay And The Americans “ONLY IN AMERICA” - In one of the greatest turnabouts in Rock and Roll history, the group JAY AND THE AMERICANS, started by four teenage boys in Sandy Yaguda’s Brooklyn basement 40 years ago, have bought back their rightful name in federal court, restoring the name to it’s rightful owners. Very few bands have ever reached the musical heights of JAY AND THE AMERICANS. From 1962- 1971, this group charted an unprecedented “12” top 10 records. With three original band members, Sandy Yaguda (aka Deane) founding member, Howie Kirschenbaum (aka Kane) original member, and Marty Kupersmith (aka Sanders), original member, plus the addition of “Jay” Reincke, the third Jay and probably the best yet, .. they have recreated the authentic sound of all of their greatest hits that everyone remembers. JAY AND THE AMERICANS first record was “TONIGHT” (from the Broadway Musical WEST SIDE STORY), and their breakout hit song was “SHE CRIED”. JAY AND THE AMERICANS next chart hit was “ONLY IN AMERICA”, followed by top ten hits “COME A LITTLE BIT CLOSER” and later “THIS MAGIC MOMENT”? Where were you when you first heard “CARA MIA”? JAY AND THE AMERICANS pay tribute to the late ROY ORBI- SON with “CRYING”, and no other band in history has sold more copies of the song “SOME ENCHANTED EVENING” than JAY AND THE AMERICANS. NEIL DIAMOND ‘s first hit song released, “SUNDAY AND ME”, was recorded by none other than JAY AND THE AMERICANS, who have toured with such legendary artists as ROY ORBISON, THE BEATLES, and THE ROLLING STONES. JAY AND THE AMERICANS were a major force in starting the Rock and Roll revival with their album “WAX MUSEUM”, where they paid tribute to many great Rock and Roll artists with their versions of such great songs as “HUSHABYE”, “WALKIN’ IN THE RAIN”, and a song that reached the top ten “THIS MAGIC MOMENT”. You will hear all of these songs, which are featured in the new JAY AND THE AMERICANS’ show. In 2002, JAY AND THE AMERICANS were inducted into the VOCAL GROUP HALL OF FAME, placing them among the greatest vocal groups in Rock and Roll history. - Family Science Night at Foster Park
Family Science Night at Foster Park By Stephen Cummings November 17, 2023 Share The Kiwanis Club Of Hallandale Beach partnered with the Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League hosting its first Family Science Night at Foster Park with nearly 100 children and adults packing the room learning about opportunities regarding science, technology, engineering and math. Three lifelong friends who grew up in Hallandale Beach, Aeden O’Neill, Julian Demian and Simon Toro who are scholarly seniors attending St. Thomas Aquinas, American Heritage and Cardinal Gibbons respectively galvanized our adult service groups to sponsor a program offered by the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Discovery and Science with the proceeds benefiting Gulfstream Academy. Aeden’s mother has been an educator at neighboring Stirling Elementary School in Hollywood for many years and had successfully implemented this program in her school witnessing students reap the benefits and piquing their curiosity. Kenny Cohan has been an invaluable asset to both the Police Athletic League and Kiwanis who previously skillfully organized an Anti-Bullying Program at Gulfstream Academy a few years ago that received rave reviews and formed a committee that would ensure the success of Family Science Night that included the three seniors, Arturo O’Neill who has served on civic boards and as a past president of the Kiwanis Club Of Hallandale Beach and Proprietor of the Successful Real Estate Management Company, ManageXchange along with his brother Jonathan, PAL Program Director, Jonathan Carrillo, Mari O’Neill who has worked as a lifelong educator at Stirling Elementary School and Steve Cummings who was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach in 1994. The Museum of Discovery and Science set up fifteen separate tables for the children attending grades K-8 where adults supervised games and learning stations watching the young minds fascinated by the challenges as huge smiles gleamed across the room bolstered by their unabashed enthusiasm for learning. As the children strolled from table to table, they received a stamp in their personal passport book which upon successful completion would entitle them to an event t-shirt and a bag filled with incidentals such as a mini calculator and a magnifying glass. Carrillo added to the revenues by selling hot dogs, chips and beverages to the families and acknowledges the hard work of the mothers from the PAL Leadership Academy that were in charge of the food. Jonathan also solved the logistical parking dilemma shuttling folks from OB Johnson Park to Foster Park due to a limited parking capacity. Cohan is grateful to the three major financial sponsors making this program feasible that included United Way, Project Empower and FPL. The city is blessed to have so many wonderful altruistic volunteers such as Hallandale Beach Police Sergeant, Greg Hippolyte who manned a learning station and demonstrated his skillful rapport with children and Noemi Lopez who has grown to be a fixture at every volunteer opportunity in Hallandale Beach displaying an indefatigable energy. Additionally, Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper, Hallandale Beach Commissioner Joy Adams, Kiwanis member Steve Cummings and Arturo O’Neill from local business ManageXchange contributed funds toward this worthy cause. The positive feedback from the attendees has prompted Kenny Cohan to publicly announce at the evening’s conclusion that a subsequent Family Science Night will be placed on the agenda in January. We urge our local businesses to support the continued education of our youth through programs that will steer them in a positive direction. Please contact Steve Cummings at: (954) 907-2392 with your assistance. < Previous News Next News >
