  • Yizkor: Remembering Those Who Made Us Who We Are | sun-times

Yizkor: Remembering Those Who Made Us Who We Are By Rabbi Moishe Kievman Chabad Chayil Sep 17, 2026 Yom Kippur Is The Holiest Day Of The Jewish Year. It Is A Day When We Step Away From The Distractions Of Everyday Life And Think About The Things That Truly Matter: Our Relationship With G-D, The Choices We Have Made, The People We Love, And The Kind Of Person We Want To Become. And in the middle of this sacred day, we stop to remember. Yizkor. The word Yizkor means “ May He remember. ” During this special prayer, we ask G-d to remember the souls of our parents and loved ones who are no longer physically with us. But Yizkor is also about us remembering them . We remember a mother’s warmth. A father’s advice. A grandparent’s stories. A spouse, sibling, relative, or dear friend whose presence helped shape our lives. Sometimes it is a particular expression we can still hear in our minds. Sometimes it is a recipe, a melody, a holiday tradition, or a lesson they taught us without ever putting it into words. Judaism teaches that a soul does not simply disappear when a person passes away. The connection continues. The love continues. And perhaps most importantly, their impact continues through us . Every mitzvah we perform because of something they taught us, every act of kindness inspired by their example, and every Jewish tradition we pass along to another generation becomes part of their legacy. That is why Yizkor traditionally includes a commitment to give tzedakah in the merit of the departed. We don't only remember with our hearts. We turn memory or physical commitment of helping others into action. There is something especially meaningful about saying Yizkor on Yom Kippur. On this day, when we ask G-d to look beyond our shortcomings and see the goodness within us, we remember those who came before us. We recognize that we did not arrive here alone. We are part of a chain. Our parents and grandparents carried Jewish faith, values, traditions, and sacrifice before us. Now those treasures have been placed into our hands. Perhaps the greatest tribute we can give them is not simply to remember how they lived, but to make sure that what they lived for continues to live through us. Light a Shabbat candle. Put on Tefillin. Give a little more tzedakah. Attend a Torah class. Bring your children or grandchildren to shul. Call someone who is lonely. Forgive someone. Add one more mitzvah. In that way, memory becomes something alive. This Yom Kippur, I encourage you to join your local synagogue or Chabad for this sacred and meaningful short prayer. Of course, Chabad Chayil warmly invites the entire Jewish community to join us for Yizkor Memorial Services. There is no charge to attend , and no membership or prior affiliation is necessary. Everyone is welcome. Monday, September 21 at 1:00 PM AWK-8 Center , which is the Public School directly across the street from Chabad Chayil 2601 NE 211 Terrace, Miami, FL 33180 If you have lost a parent or another loved one, come spend these sacred moments remembering them together with your community. And even if it has been many years since you have stepped into a synagogue—or you are not sure exactly what to say or do—please come. Yizkor isn't about how familiar you are with the prayer book. It is about remembering someone who mattered. For security purposes, advance registration is appreciated at: ChabadChayil.org/High-Holidays . If you are unable to attend in person, fill out the form at: ChabadChayil.org/YizkorForm and we’ll have it done on your behalf. You can also learn about the meaning of Yizkor, access the prayers, and find inspiration at: ChabadChayil.org/YizkorForm . May the memories of our loved ones inspire us to live more meaningful Jewish lives, and may the mitzvot we perform in their merit bring an aliyah —an elevation—to their precious souls. May we all be sealed for a good, sweet, healthy and peaceful year. About the author: Rabbi Kievman together with his wife are the ambassadors of The Rebbe to Highland Lakes, FL. • Ways You Can Help Local Small Businesses Thrive

Ways You Can Help Local Small Businesses Thrive (BPT) January 20, 2022 Share There are millions of small businesses in the United States owned by passionate people working hard to make their dreams a reality. Rather than buying from a big retailer the next time you need something, consider supporting the locally owned businesses around you. When you support a small business, you're not only helping build your community, but also directly impacting someone's life. Every customer counts when it comes to small business, which means your dollars can help that small business owner thrive. For example, as the nation's largest insurer, State Farm has more than 19,000 agents who are small business owners themselves, who are committed to restoring lives, rebuilding neighborhoods and investing in the communities where they live and work. This desire to help started 100 years ago when the company was founded by a farmer who was concerned that big city insurance companies would not serve the specific needs of his business and community. Here are three simple ways to support small businesses and have a positive impact: Get To Know Your Community Through Its Businesses Your support matters all year long. For many people, this means shifting their mindset to thinking about local options first and getting to know the types of products and services your local businesses are providing. Whether you are purchasing items for yourself or someone else, start to understand how these local businesses can fill your needs. Don't forget, many small businesses offer gift cards, which are wonderful ways to show ongoing support. Support Small Business Service Providers Small businesses aren't just for tangible goods. Many provide important services, such as your local mechanic, dentist or insurance agent. So, no matter your needs, try and find businesses that are active in the community. You can spot these businesses by seeing how they engage with their neighbors. Look for the providers that are going above and beyond to support the neighborhood and other small businesses. By supporting those that have a strong investment in your community, you are helping them create a greater impact. "From doughnut shops to beverage distributors, from hair salons to warehouses, State Farm agents are perfectly suited to help small business owners protect their dreams, their livelihoods and their families," said Chief Agency, Sales & Marketing Officer and former State Farm Agent Rand Harbert. "We offer products and services business owners need, and State Farm agents are small business owners themselves." Share Your Experience Many small businesses rely on satisfied customers to tell others so they can grow their client base. People trust word of mouth, so your effort makes a difference. In fact, more than eight out of 10 people around the world said they completely or somewhat trust the recommendations of friends and family, according to Nielsen. Plus, two-thirds said they trust online opinions from consumers. So, tell a friend in person, share a post on social media, or leave a positive review online. If you're a small business owner, consider using your platform to build up other entrepreneurs in your neighborhood. The next time you have a need arise, think of how a small business can help. Every effort counts to build your community, show your support, and ensure you continue to have thriving small businesses near you. < Previous News Next News >

  • Back To School: Supporting Teachers Helps Your Child's Education

Back To School: Supporting Teachers Helps Your Child's Education August 11, 2022 Share The first day of school for the 2022/23 School Year in Broward County Public Schools is just a couple weeks away, Tuesday, August 16th, 2022. Throughout the Pandemic, teachers have gone above and beyond for their students, becoming not just educators, but also counselors, role models and friends to their students by supporting their overall well-being. Over the past few years we have all learned a lot about our children's education and that the best way to help is with parent and community involvement. In a recent survey, only 52% of teachers feel valued by their communities, according to PDK International, a professional association for educators. What's more, teachers are more burnt out than ever, with 81% reporting their workloads have increased and 55% sharing they have less time for planning than before, according to a State of Teaching survey conducted by Adopt a Classroom. Heading back to school means stocking up on supplies, updating wardrobes and planning new routines for hassle-free mornings. As you prepare for the new school year for your child, consider ways for supporting your children's teachers, too: Volunteer In The Classroom With the extra roles and responsibilities many teachers have taken on in recent years, there aren't enough hours in the day to complete special projects or keep up with certain tasks. Ask teachers how you can lend a hand. That might mean spending some time physically in the classroom, or there may be ways you can support your children's classes from home, such as assembling instructional packets or researching field trip ideas. Volunteering At Broward County Public Schools Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Volunteers play a significant role in the success of students. The District recognizes and appreciates the invaluable service provided for our students to reach their highest potential, in order to succeed in tomorrow’s world. if you are interested in being a part of your child's education and assisting teachers with students contact the School Volunteer Liaison at: (754) 321-2300. Or email: volunteer@browardschools.com Recognize Teachers Who Go Above And Beyond Chances are good you know at least a few educators who have gone beyond the call of duty and made an exceptional impact on their students. Honoring their contributions shows appreciation for all they do. One way to demonstrate your gratitude is by nominating educators for Staples' fourth annual #ThankATeacher Contest, which recognizes 20 stand-out educators who go above and beyond for their students. Winners' schools will be awarded $5,000 in classroom essentials for the upcoming school year. Learn more about how to nominate a teacher at: https://www.staplesconnect.com/p/thankateacher Be A Partner In Your Child's Learning At Home Supporting teachers isn't just about the classroom and supplies; you can also provide a helping hand by creating good habits and modeling the importance of education at home. Actions like creating routines that keep students on a comfortable, familiar schedule help teachers manage classrooms more effectively. You can also make communication with your children's teachers a priority so you're aware of concerns and can help address them early. Donate School Supplies Often, teachers dip into their own income to create fun, engaging learning experiences and supplement student supplies when they run low. In fact, the average teacher spends $745 on supplies for their classrooms that are not covered by school budgets. According to Adopt a Classroom's State of Teaching survey, 71% of teachers spent more of their own money on classroom materials in 2022 than during the previous year. You can ask teachers what supplies they need, or you can give back to teachers through Staples' Classroom Rewards program. Join for free and earn 5% back on every qualifying purchase for you and 10% back of qualifying purchases to donate to local teachers. The program helps reduce teachers' out of pocket costs for their classrooms by allowing them to earn up to $2,000 a year. Another way to donate school supplies is to be a part of the Broward Education Foundation’s Annual Back to School Drive. This yearly event offers multiple ways to contribute. The School Supply Center is stocked through generous donations from local businesses and individuals, supplies purchased with donated funds and partnerships with national organizations such as Kids in Need Foundation, Target, Staples and Walgreens. To donate to this years drive visit: https://browardedfoundation.org/ways-to-give/school-supplies-product-donation-tools-schools-broward/ Or call Hector Javier at: (754) 321-9021. Attend School Board Meetings And Voice Support Keeping tabs on the issues affecting your school district and teachers is an important part of monitoring and advocating for your children's education, but it's also a way for you to lend your support on topics affecting teachers. Stay informed about issues that matter to your children's teachers and support school board policies and actions that serve teachers' best interests. A great way to get directly involved with the school board is to reach out to the Broward County Public School Community Connection Department. This program is designed to enhance leadership, parenting and advocacy skills to provide families the tools for academic success. To learn more about this program and how it can benefit your child, contact Nadia Clarke at: (754) 321-1599. < Previous News Next News >

The Art of Tim Forman: Florida Everglades Opens July 3rd through September 26th June 15, 2021 Share “When outdoors, I am drawn to light and the horizon,” said Forman. “My work is influenced by A. E. Backus, who helped me to discover the simple beauty of Florida. I have been painting it ever since.” History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present “The Art of Tim Forman: Florida Everglades” from Saturday, July 3 through Sunday, September 26. Forman’s colorful impressionist environmentally inspired works will be on display at the New River Inn (231 Southwest Second Avenue). “Tim Forman’s summer exhibitions are one of our largest draws and we’re looking forward to showcasing his masterful landscape oil paintings,” said Patricia Zeiler, executive director of History Fort Lauderdale. “As a paintbrush historian, he excels at capturing the timeless beauty and serenity of Florida’s hidden treasures. This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to experience one of our region’s true talents.” Tim Forman is the third generation of Formans to have been born and reared in South Florida. Through his work, Tim seeks to lift the spirits and inspire awe above our day-to-day lives. “When outdoors, I am drawn to light and the horizon,” said Forman. “My work is influenced by A. E.
