  • KC and the Sunshine Band: It All Started Out As a "Dream" in Hialeah

KC and the Sunshine Band: It All Started Out As a "Dream" in Hialeah January 5, 2023 Share Whose music has been featured at EVERY major sporting event in the world including the Super Bowl, World Series, Conference Championships, The NBA, Collegiate Bowl Games National Championship Games, the NASCAR racing circuit and championships, The World Cup, The Indianapolis 500, The Kentucky Derby, EVERY Holiday Parade include the famous Macys Thanksgiving Day parade and the Tournament of Roses Parade, Political Party Conventions, Presidential Campaigns, and nearly EVERY wedding, confirmation, and bar mitzvah in the world? Whose music has been featured on more than 200 motion picture film soundtracks? The answer is, Harry Wayne Casey, better known as the founder and leader of KC and The Sunshine Band. The music that got people out of their seats and onto the dance floor originated with humble beginnings in Hialeah, Florida. KC has never moved farther than 10 miles away from his birthplace and the birthplace of his legendary music underlines the fact that he is proud that his "Sunshine Sound" has flourished continuously for over 37 years. "I remember that I always wanted to do something that would make people forget about their problems and be happy,” recalls KC. “I always loved music and I was fortunate enough to grow up in a multi-ethnic area that exposed me to a lot of different cultures and music...from Pop to Reggae to Latin. I experimented at trying to put all three types of music together and the Sunshine Sound was born. Why move from an area that not only do I love, but owe so much to?' Let's "rewind" back to 1973. The price of an average home was $32,500. The price of an average automobile was $2,900. The price of a gallon of gasoline was 40 cents a gallon. The United States was still involved in the Vietnam conflict, Richard Nixon was the target of the Watergate investigation, University Students were protesting and rioting, and there was discontent all over the world with rising unemployment and inflation. People were looking for something that would divert their attention from the negative aspects of everyday life surrounding them. During this time, young Harry Casey did anything and everything that he could do to further his passion for music. He worked at a local record store, opened boxes at Tone Record Distributors and hung around a local recording studio just hoping that somebody would give him a chance to fulfill his biggest dream...to record a record. That "dream" was answered by a man named Henry Stone who owned both Tone Distributors and TK Recording Studios. KC recalls the early days of TK Records: "It was like a big family and Henry was our Dad." Stone had recorded Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker and James Brown at the TK Recording Studios and took a liking to the energetic and optimistic Harry Casey and decided to give him a chance to make his dream come true...a chance to record. Nobody would have thought that Henry Stone's insight and Harry Casey's talent and enthusiasm would make history and make Miami, Florida the hottest music city on the planet. The "birth" of KC and the Sunshine band was about to happen and nobody knew that its birth would not only bring the world legendary music, but influence a whole generation. From clothing to hairstyles to dance styles to new acceptable words in the English language, KC and the Sunshine Band had arrived! And what an arrival! Four Number one Records in a row, Grammy Awards, Peoples Choice Awards, American Music Awards, and the focus of the music world became Miami, Florida. Things have changed drastically since 1973. One thing hasn't changed, though. The infectious, feel good happy music of KC and the Sunshine Band. What started out as a "dream" is now "legend." Their first record, BLOW YOUR WHISTLE, made the top 15 on the R&B chart. Their second album, KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND, was released in 1975, went triple platinum and contained the #1 hits GET DOWN TONIGHT, THAT’S THE WAY (I LIKE IT), BOOGIE SHOES and ROCK YOUR BABY. Also in 1975 he won the American Music Award for Best R&B Artist. KC & The Sunshine Band became the first act to score four #1 pop singles in one 12-month period since the Beatles in 1964. Three of those singles crossed over to become #1 R&B, as well. KC’s third album, PART 3, released in 1976, also went triple platinum and contained the #1 singles I’M YOUR BOOGIE MAN, SHAKE YOUR BOOTY and KEEP IT COMIN’ LOVE. The band’s string of hit singles continued with BOOGIE SHOES, which was included on the SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER soundtrack, PLEASE DON’T GO, and YES, I’M READY, a duet with high school friend Teri DeSario. He also received Grammy Awards for Album of the Year, as well as Producer of the Year in 1978 for his work on the SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER soundtrack. Harry Wayne Casey, a true icon of so many generations, gets people up and dancing, making everyone happy. His place at the top in the music world is secure and that is as it should be. KC and the Sunshine Band have been entertaining audiences around the world for over 37 years, and have sold in excess of 100 million records and "That's The Way They Like It" uh-huh uh-huh! KC and The Sunshine Band are still as widely popular today as they were when they first danced into the music scene so many years ago. KC and The Sunshine Band play more than 100 live shows annually, circling the country and playing dates regularly throughout Europe, Australia and South America. In 2008, KC celebrated 35 years of entertaining, writing songs, performing around the world and he has no intention of stopping. In 2002 KC received the coveted Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where Dick Clark and music producer Michael Lloyd turned out to honor him. This particular honor represents the passion that KC has in writing music, implementing elements of various eras with his songs being a powerful signature from a passionate veteran craftsman. KC's music is now being sampled by rappers, and whole new generations of fans have been introduced to his music. So if you like to hear hear these hits, put in your BOOGIE SHOES because KC and The Sunshine Band are coming to Hollywood on Friday, Feb. 24, 2023, at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at: www.myhrl.com . Doors open one hour before show time. < Previous News Next News >

  • The State of the City: An Eye to The Future of Hallandale Beach

The State of the City: An Eye to The Future of Hallandale Beach By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper June 8, 2023 Share This past Tuesday, I had the honor to deliver “The State of the City Address,” I want to thank the Hallandale Beach Area Chamber for their honor and the many stakeholders that joined in the event. I will be sharing my speech over the next few weeks. Please note it is in speech form. Over the past year, I think we have all moved out of COVID-19 with an eye to the future. Obviously, we are still faced with many social and economic problems. Insurance Costs, Housing Costs, the Stock Market, the War in Ukraine, Gun Violence, just to name a few. What will the future look like? All of these issues have a direct or indirect impact on the way we run our cities, how you run your businesses and how our residents go through their daily lives. But as we move forward, I believe we all are striving and working towards stability and hopefully growth, the state of our City in one word: Stable, I do not want to go too far back in our past. As it is said that we cannot change it, but we can learn from it. A little over 5 years ago, I came back as Mayor. At that time, the City was in financial dire straits. As a matter of fact, the reserves had dropped to $11 Million Dollars, They were projected to dip to $8 Million then Financial Insolvency. As a rule of thumb, our City’s goal is to have a minimum of 16% percent of General Fund Reserves in case of an Emergency. Currently, due to the hard work of our City and sacrifices of our taxpayers we have over $24 Million in Unaudited Reserves as of last month. That sounds fantastic, right? Well, it is but there are still past issues that are a threat to the stability of our Budget. We are still facing a $6 Million Dollar Judgment for the firing of Former City Manager Daniel Rosemond. The Case is on Appeal, so we need to ensure we have savings if the Appeal Court supports the ruling. Even with that large use of reserves to pay this unfortunate debt, we will not go back to where we began five years ago. I do not want to place blame on any one thing or person, but this situation reinforces that leadership truly matters and the buck stops with the Commission! To those of you that are new to our community, this history explains why and where we are today. In 2016, the City Commission changed due to Elections. The silver lining at that time was the recruitment of Dr. Jeremy Earle from Fort Lauderdale to Hallandale Beach to become Executive Director of the CRA. You see, Dr. Jeremy Earle has Public Service in his DNA. I first met Dr. Jeremy Earle as a Board Member of the Florida Redevelopment Association where we both served. He became President, turned the organization around and made it solvent. This is proof of his strong leadership, financial knowledge, strategic vision and most of all integrity. We all know that ethics and morals are part of one’s character, but the “reporting of true facts” is actually integrity. This one thing my Dad taught me: you should never allow anyone to take away from you. That is why I fought my biggest battle. I believe that Dr. Jeremy Earle was also raised with those values and never forgets them no matter what position he holds. So, he deserves the super majority of credit and recognition of why we are stable. W. Clement Stone, an entrepreneur who was born into poverty during 1902 worked tirelessly and turned one hundred dollars into a billion-dollar insurance company. He believed in some truths when it comes to business practices. One is doing things and being happy doing them. It makes the difference between good and great. He must have been right and happy as he lived to be one hundred years old. He also authored a book on leadership. I found this particular quote of his very apropos. “Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it is right. These are the magic keys to living your life with integrity.” To me this summarizes not only leadership, but the qualities that Dr. Jeremy Earle has brought to our table. He is not a “YES MAN.” Too often City Managers are more worried about job security and counting to three rather than doing the right thing for their cities. I do believe that if stars had not aligned with the hiring of the right City Manager, and the right City Commission was not on the Dais, our City would be in Chapter Nine Bankruptcy. This is not to spread fear but truth. You have heard it and it is true. A city, like all businesses, if it is not run properly, can go Bankrupt. Even before COVID-19 there were 69 Government Bankruptcies filed since 2010. Detroit, being the most notable. Dr. Jeremy Earle was tasked once again to right a ship and make our City solvent to avoid fiscal collapse. This City Commission, free from drama and united, embraced the no nonsense straight forward approach of Dr. Jeremy Earle. I must say. Do not mistake his “by the book manor” as a sign of indifference or lack of empathy. Quite the contrary. He is an analytical person, protector of the City, creative and genuinely cares for what is best for everyone that is concerned. And yes, he does listen to his bosses and to our community. He does what is right because it is right! Since he came on board, he has added new Staff Members to our City. This amazing group of public servants have created a five-year stability plan to rebuild. He led with the Motto “NO MORE KICKED CANS.” I joke once in a while and say “Kicked Cans down the road do not disappear, they just stack up at the end. Well, we were at the end of that road and started to address not one can, but all of them.” The journey began. A year later, we all were faced with the uncertainty of COVID-19. Next week, I will continue my State Of The City Address. As always, I am available for your questions, concerns and ideas to help make our City a better place. Please feel free to reach out to me at my Office: (954) 457-1318. On my Cell/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or Email me at: jcooper@cohb.org . < Previous News Next News >

  • The Unbearable Weight Of Social Pressures: Psychologist’s Book Helps Women Lighten The Load

The Unbearable Weight Of Social Pressures: Psychologist’s Book Helps Women Lighten The Load July 4, 2024 Share Throughout her 25 years in private practice as a Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Alicia Lamberghini-West has become abundantly aware of the social pressures women face and how unhappy, guilty or ashamed women feel when they do not rise to meet these expectations. “Women around the world, of all ages and socio-cultural backgrounds, experience social pressures that lead to expectations and challenges in their lives,” Dr. Lamberghini-West explained. “These pressures are often internalized, and we women lose touch with our authentic selves, our inner lives and what makes us who we genuinely are.” In her book, Your Life, Your Way: Become Aware of Social Pressures Limiting Women, Dr. Lamberghini-West provides an objective view of common sources of pressure women face, including the pressure to be perfect; to have the ideal body; to be productive at work and exceed expectations but at the same time take a second place; to find a partner and get married; to start a family and have children; to be the best mother and/or wife; to comply with imposed religion and/or societal norms and customs; to “Have It All;” and many more. Then, she explores how societal pressures clash with a woman's personal preferences, ambitions and desires, revealing the tension between these external pressures and individual goals. “The reality is that we women often feel caught between the expectations coming at us from the two directions of patriarchal ideology and feminism — the demands of our social reality and the pressures of living up to the goals we set for ourselves,” she said. “As a result, we experience a lot of conflict over which set of expectations to respond to.” Ultimately, Your Life, Your Way is a springboard to motivate all women to take steps toward greater personal choice and freedom, inspiring them to recognize their power and rise above social pressures and expectations. If you’ve heard that a woman’s place is second, that women should put everyone else first, or that complying with traditions will bring you acceptance, appreciation, respect, and belonging, you’re not alone. Women around the world, of all ages and sociocultural backgrounds, experience social pressures that lead to expectations and challenges in their lives. These pressures are often internalized, and we women lose touch with our authentic self, our inner life, and what makes us who we genuinely are. “YOUR LIFE, YOUR WAY – Become Aware of Social Pressures Limiting Women” provides an objective view of the challenges women face and defines existing social pressures that often clash with women understanding and pursuing their personal preferences, ambitions, and desires. This book motivates women to take steps toward greater personal choice and freedom, inspiring us to recognize our power and rise above social pressures and expectations. We each have a unique personal identity and the right to develop and express it. “YOUR LIFE, YOUR WAY – Become Aware of Social Pressures Limiting Women” is a springboard for all women to bravely create the fulfilling life we want—a life that takes into account our individual desires, needs, and talents. But make no mistake, the message is relevant for men, too, “because undoing social pressures is everyone’s responsibility.” “It is only from a foundation of freedom and equitable distribution of power between men and women that a new and better world can develop,” Dr. Lamberghini-West added. “We each have a unique personal identity and the right to develop and express it since it’s our life.” The Author Alicia Lamberghini-West, PsyD, is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Author with 25 years of robust experience in Psychiatric Rehabilitation and private practice with a strong focus on women’s issues. Dr. Lamberghini-West has a lifelong passion for empowering women in all aspects of their lives, across cultures, ages and social classes, and is firmly established as a global expert, advisor, therapist, presenter and lecturer on various topics surrounding mental health, addictions, and gender subjects. In 2015, she was incorporated into the Fulbright Specialist Roster for this field. This cutting-edge facility is not merely a renovation but a transformation, symbolizing the school's commitment to empowering its students with resources fit for the 21st century. The grand opening of the media center was nothing short of a celebration. Bright smiles and eager faces filled the space as students and staff gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Principal Mark Howard's enthusiasm echoed through the halls as he expressed his delight in providing students with an environment conducive to learning, relaxation, and exploration. "Our students, our staff are delighted to be able to take part in this beautiful opportunity to ensure that our students have every opportunity to engage in learning, to be able to pick out a book and read, and be able to come out here and relax," Mark said. This transformation didn't happen overnight. It was made possible through the Broward Schools' voter-approved SMART Bond Program, which allocated approximately $9 Million for campus-wide enhancements. Hallandale Magnet High School seized this opportunity to not only renovate its media center but also to upgrade fire alarms, improve electrical systems, ensure ADA Compliance, enhance HVAC systems, and revamp STEM labs. It's a testament to the school's dedication to providing a top-tier educational experience for its students. Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) stands as a shining example of educational excellence, serving over 251,000 students and 110,000 adult learners across 239 schools, centers, and technical colleges. Through initiatives like the SMART Bond Program, BCPS continues to uphold its mission of "educating all students to reach their highest potential." But what sets Hallandale Magnet High School's new media center apart? It's more than just a physical space—it's a gateway to endless possibilities. Equipped with modern amenities such as tables, lounge chairs, computers, and a vast array of reading material, the media center serves as a hub for collaboration, creativity, and intellectual growth. In an age where information is at our fingertips, the importance of cultivating strong literacy skills cannot be overstated. The media center provides students with access to explore new worlds, broaden their horizons, and think critically about the world around them. But it's not just about the media center, the room also serves as a sanctuary for students seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life. With inviting spaces, students can unwind, recharge, and connect with their peers in a relaxed setting. Furthermore, the media center serves as a catalyst for innovation and creativity. Equipped with cutting-edge technology and multimedia resources, students can unleash their imagination, produce multimedia projects, and showcase their talents to the world, the possibilities are endless. But perhaps the most significant impact of the new media center is its role in fostering a sense of community. As students gather to study, collaborate, or simply socialize, bonds are formed, friendships are forged, and memories are made. It's a place where students from all walks of life come together to learn, grow, and inspire one another. As Hallandale Magnet High School embarks on this new chapter, the future looks brighter than ever. However, among all parents surveyed, 77% reported that paying for college is stressful and 71% were surprised by the high cost. There are many financial sources parents use to pay for their children's college tuition.
