Preheat the oven to 375 F. Spray a small, round baking dish with nonstick cooking spray; set aside. Add sauce to a small bowl. Grate in two garlic cloves then add 1/8 cup basil and red pepper flakes. Stir to combine then pour sauce into the baking dish. Smash goat cheese into a ball. Place the ball between two sheets of plastic wrap. Using your hands, flatten cheese into a thick, round disc about 1 inch smaller in diameter than a baking dish. Remove goat cheese from plastic wrap and place in the center of the sauce. Drizzle cheese with 2 teaspoons of olive oil. Sprinkle with fresh thyme, kosher salt and pepper. Bake on lower rack, uncovered, 20-25 minutes, or until sauce is bubbly and cheese is warmed through. Place baguette slices on a baking sheet. Drizzle or brush with olive oil and sprinkle with kosher salt. Bake crostini on the upper rack for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through. When bread is done, remove from the oven, cut the last garlic clove in half and rub the cut side on the bread. Top dip with remaining basil and blistered tomatoes, if desired and serve with crostini. Note: To make blistered tomatoes: Heat skillet over medium-high heat until almost smoking. Add 1 pint cherry tomatoes to the dry skillet and let it sit for 1 minute. Lower the heat to low, toss the tomatoes with 2 teaspoons of olive oil and cook 2-3 minutes or until tomatoes are about to burst. Remove from heat; sprinkle with a pinch of salt and pepper. Polenta Bites • 1 tube (18 ounces) polenta • 1 1/2 teaspoons olive oil • 1 jar (24 ounces) RAGU Chunky Tomato, Garlic and Onion Sauce • 1 package (8 ounces) shredded mozzarella • 2 sprigs, rosemary, de stemmed and chopped • 3 basil leaves, chopped • 1 block (8 ounces) hard Parmesan cheese Cut the polenta into slices. In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat; fry the polenta slices 10-12 minutes on each side until crispy and golden brown. In a saucepan over medium heat, warm the sauce. Place the polenta slices on a tray and sprinkle with mozzarella. Place 1/2 teaspoon warm sauce on each slice then sprinkle with chopped rosemary and basil. Grate hard Parmesan onto each slice for topping. Snowman Pizza Bombs • 1 tube (11.8 ounces) pizza dough • 1 jar (24 ounces) RAGU Old World Style Traditional Sauce • 1 package (6 ounces) pepperoni slices • 1 package (6 ounces) Canadian bacon slices • 1 package (8 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese • 4 tablespoons melted butter • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 1/2 teaspoons Italian seasoning • 1 package (8 ounces) mozzarella cheese slices Decorative vegetables (optional): • multicolored sweet peppers • olives • spinach • mushrooms • cherry tomatoes Preheat the oven to 400 F. Cut pizza dough into 12 squares. On each square, place a 1/2 teaspoon of sauce and evenly top with pepperoni, Canadian bacon and cheddar cheese. Pinch the corners of the dough together to round into balls then place them in the muffin tins. In a small bowl, mix melted butter, garlic powder and Italian seasoning; brush generously over dough balls. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Remove from muffin tin and carefully shape dough balls into circles; place on baking sheet. Cover with mozzarella slices and bake until melted. Create snowman faces by decorating each with peppers, olives, spinach, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes, if desired and use the remaining sauce for dipping. < Previous News Next News >

    Happy 101st Miriam Esther Schwartz
Aventura Digest January 22, 2025 Share Reaching the remarkable milestone of a century is a momentous occasion, and brothers; Wayne and Les Schwartz are blessed to announce the 101st birthday of their mother, Miriam Esther Schwartz. Her journey through life has been nothing short of extraordinary, marked by decades of living in the vibrant communities of Miami Beach, Sunny Isles, and Hallandale. We delve into the story of a woman who has witnessed the transformation of a city and embraced the joys of family, community service, and a love for classic music. Miriam's connection to the sun-kissed shores of Miami Beach runs deep for over 75 years. She first discovered the allure of this coastal paradise in 1948 when she started vacationing here with her parents. Over the years, she witnessed the evolving landscape of Miami Beach as it transitioned into an internationally acclaimed destination. As Miami Beach changed, so did her life, and her resilience in adapting to these shifts is nothing short of inspiring. Miami Beach has been her permanent home since 1965. Both of her sons attended Miami Beach High School and graduated the University of Florida. With a family, that extended beyond her sons, Miriam has also had the joy of three stepdaughters. Her family has grown to nine grandchildren and a growing number of great-grandchildren. Her goals in these late years of life have been to outlive her mother who lived to 101, two months and 10 days -which she has done- and her current goal is to live long enough for the birth of her first great great grandchild from her oldest granddaughter, timed for June 2025. Miriam worked as a bookkeeper for two independent small businesses on Miami Beach for over 35 years. Her work ethic then transitioned to community service and volunteering. Miriam's talents also extended to knitting and crafting beautiful Afghan blankets. These handmade creations have become cherished heirlooms for her family. Miriam's love for Asian cuisine and appreciation for classical music enriched her life in countless ways. She savored trying different Asian dishes and reveled in the melodies of classical composers. One of the greatest gifts she ever received was a full series of CDs featuring the works of classical composers. As we celebrate Miriam Esther Schwartz's 101st birthday, we honor not only her longevity, but a life worth living. Happy 101st birthday, Miriam Esther Schwartz. < Previous News Next News >

  • “Chubby The Bear’s Big Choice”

“Chubby The Bear’s Big Choice” December 13, 2023 Share New Children’s Picture Book Addresses Bullying, Body Image, Weight-Shaming And Self-Esteem Author Daryl R. McCullough’s second book, “Chubby The Bear’s Big Choice,” is set in a California redwood forest and tells the story of a sensitive, young bear struggling with bullies and Self-Esteem Issues. This tender new book offers children, parents, and others of all ages an engaging story with several timely lessons on bullying, body image, weight-shaming, and Self-Esteem to be shared and discussed. Parents and children’s therapists have already heralded the book as an essential tool on the subject matter. Order now at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Target or Archway Publishing. Chubby is a fitting follow-up to McCullough’s Award-Winning first book “The Story of Tree and Cloud” — 1st Place, Pen Craft Awards; Finalist/5-Stars, “Reader’s Choice Book Awards”; 1st Place, “Firebird Awards”; and 3rd Place, “Best Children’s Book" and "Best Illustrated & Picture Book," Spring 2022, Outstanding Creator Awards. “Tree and Cloud” is a story about loss and managing grief, also set among California’s natural beauty, starring a California live oak tree named Folie and her new friend Puddle. “Chubby the Bear’s Big Choice” is similarly illustrated — not as a cartoon, but in a pure and naturalist style — by McCullough’s 80-year-old aunt Maryanne Smith, an acclaimed nature artist from Pennsylvania. “I grew up a chubby child who was bullied and weight-shamed by my peers and even by teachers and staff in grade school,” McCullough said. “I hope that by sharing this story, any child who might be dealing with these issues and feelings can find the strength to talk about it with their parents and learn self-care. “Of course, I also hope the story might thwart a bully or two, providing a teachable moment for them that our individuality is powerful, and compassion is paramount in any friendship,” McCullough said. The story follows its hero, Chubby, a sensitive young bear cub with a rare talent for befriending honeybees and perhaps enjoying too much of their honey. Bullied by other bear cubs in the forest, Chubby finds solace by retreating up in the air, high in the branches of the redwood trees. One day, Chubby’s mood gets lifted by his forest friends — a sweet raccoon and a wise beaver — and Chubby embarks on a journey to reclaim his Self-Esteem, choosing to teach the other cubs a lesson along the way. Ultimately, Chubby takes the high road and shows others he is emotionally mature enough to stand up for himself while showcasing his strengths in a thrilling culmination of the tale, which ends happily for all. Available now, the book invites readers of all ages to embark on a powerful journey of self-discovery and empathy and helps foster essential conversations and empower the next generation. “This magical story touched my heart and reminded me how, as a mother of two fabulous daughters, I always had my eye on bullying, particularly when it came to body shaming. Bullies teach us all how not to behave! Conversely, I taught my girls that staying connected with their bodies and loving and sharing their unique gifts with others were some of the healthiest ways to care for themselves and live fulfilled lives. Life is indeed a gift, so like Chubby, let’s all choose love, acceptance, and kindness!” — Melora Hardin, Emmy-nominated star (“The Office,” “Transparent,” “Dancing with the Stars,” “Monk”) About The Author Daryl McCullough is a Professional Writer and Marketing Communications executive who loves creative expression. He lives and works in the Los Angeles area with his husband George Griffin; together, they have a Marketing Communications and Social Media Business, McGriffin Media. He is formerly CEO and now Chair Emeritus Of Citizen Relations, a global brand marketing firm. The family adores their dog, Ferdinand, named after another delightful book. About The Illustrator Maryanne Smith is a talented 80-year-old artist. She has designed and painted many high-end wallpaper designs for the premier York Wallcoverings. She has sold many works of art drawn from nature, and “Chubby the Bear’s Big Choice” is her follow-up to “The Story of Tree and Cloud.” She is from York County, Pennsylvania. Prints of images from each book are available for purchase. < Previous News Next News >

  • Pandemic Perspectives: After Two Years of COVID-19 Rules Many Views Remain Unchanged

Pandemic Perspectives: After Two Years of COVID-19 Rules Many Views Remain Unchanged June 16, 2022 Share When news first emerged about a deadly Airborne Virus that was quickly spreading around the World, one would have thought that any divisions would be cast aside and Americans would unite to combat a common threat. Instead, what transpired was that COVID-19 and more specifically how to manage it, became a Political Dogfight, whereby even wearing a mask represented a Political Statement. And now, after 1 million deaths, months of squabbling over Stimulus Aid, Street Protests, Vaccine Mandates, Chronic Supply Problems, Compulsory Mask Wearing and Enforced Social Distancing, two years of National infighting has not moved the needle for almost half of Americans. That is, according to a recent study By: www.MyBioSource.com a Biotechnical Products Distribution Company, who questioned 3,442 people. They asked (now with the benefit of hindsight) whether their views on COVID-19 Rules and Regulations have shifted over time, or whether or not they have remained the same. The Survey found that overall, over 1 in 3 (37%) Floridians said their opinions about COVID-19 Rules and Regulations have remained the same. However, the same Study did reveal that there was a slight shift towards supporting the Official Regulations and how the Pandemic was managed – 38% stated that they are now more in agreement with the restrictions that were implemented than they were before, compared to 25% who’s views have shifted the other way. When averaged out, this represents a 12% overall swing towards supporting the rules that were imposed. Perhaps the Survey’s findings are not that surprising. A new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, explained that Political Polarization can become irreversible. Instead of uniting against a common enemy, “the threat itself becomes yet another polarizing issue.” The Survey also revealed interesting results by location. While a sizable proportion of States views’ on COVID-19 Regulations have remained the same, thirteen have leaned more towards supporting how the Pandemic was managed. These thirteen include what can be considered more liberal states, such as: California and New York, but also included some surprises including: Indiana and South Carolina. When these figures were broken down by State, Alaska had the highest percentage swing of any State in their opinion towards COVID-19 Regulations since the start of the Pandemic. 57% of respondents in Alaska said they are now more in support of COVID-19 Rules which were implemented, compared to at the beginning of the Pandemic. On the other hand, 14% said their views have changed to being more opposed to these Regulations, while 29% of Alaskans had opinions which still remain unchanged. In Florida, 37% of people surveyed opinions remained the same, 38% support the measures taken and 25% are against the way the Pandemic was handled. The results showed that almost 1 in 3 people surveyed have lost friends or become more distant with them over the past two years of the Pandemic, due to disagreements over COVID-19 Rules and Regulations. In casual social gatherings with friends or family members, or over afterwork drinks with colleagues, these kinds of topics can become particularly divisive if members of the party feel particularly strongly about their views. Perhaps this could be why 36% say they avoid talking about COVID-19-Related Topics in social settings, in order to avoid the risk of getting into arguments. And in a sign thatCOVID-19 is no longer seen as a priority for many Americans, 60% of those surveyed hold the opinion that work and public spaces should no longer maintain strict Protocols and Regulations. Indeed, there are no more truckers stopping traffic to protest Restrictions, most airlines have dropped their Mask Mandates and even people living in more urban liberal areas no longer adhere to Strict Social Distancing Measures as they once did. Another study conducted at the start of the Pandemic in April 2020, discovered that 45% of people surveyed felt the Coronavirus Pandemic was the top issue faced by Americans at the time. Before the Delta Variant hit last summer, around 8% still thought the Virus was the top issue. However, a new poll this year found this figure to be the lowest since: just 3% of Americans thought the Pandemic was the biggest issue facing America today. Perhaps worryingly, 61% of people questioned in the Survey said they think if there were to be another Pandemic, Americans would be more divided on ways of dealing with the Virus in terms of Related Regulations. ‘Having experienced such a huge-scale shift in daily routine, work, school and social behaviors, there were bound to be topics which people found contentious with multiple opinions on Rules and Regulations affecting peoples’ everyday lives,’ said a spokesperson for MyBioSource.com. ‘It is interesting that such a significant portion of people have altered their views positively towards these topics since the start of the Pandemic, which suggests that many are willing to comply more readily. This could have to do with things like the emergence of new Scientific Research throughout the Pandemic; personal loss; or even individual cases, whereby people became aware of the harsh reality of the Virus.’ < Previous News Next News >

  • Five Steps To Grief Recovery: Because Grief Is Painful, We Sometimes Have A Tendency To Ignore Or Deny It

Five Steps To Grief Recovery: Because Grief Is Painful, We Sometimes Have A Tendency To Ignore Or Deny It By Tracy Renee Lee August 12, 2021 Share Survivors may choose to employ professional or certified counseling, participate in group support, rely upon clergy, family or friends or, go it alone Although it may not seem like it, overcoming grief is possible. Sometimes, you may feel as though overcoming your grief, is a betrayal to your loved ones. Let me assure you, that this is not true. You may worry that recovery, indicates that you have stopped loving your loved ones and this, is also untrue. Prolonged and extended grief suffering, is unhealthy and dangerous. It can lead to physical and psychological illnesses. What Are The Physical Symptoms Of Grief? Survivors suffer extreme fatigue, nausea, headaches, food aversions, sleep deprivation, dizziness, sun sensitivity, loss of motivation, pain and extreme illness, directly related to grief. Grief will increase inflammation. Inflammation exacerbates existing health problems and opens the door, for new ones to creep in. Grief also batters the immune system, causing vitality depletion and vulnerabilities to infection. It also raises blood pressure and the risk of blood clots. If unchecked, it can usher in strokes. Intense grief, can even alter the heart muscle. Grief recovery is healthy and if you are honest with yourself, you know, that your loved one would not want this debilitating pain to continue, indefinitely. So, if you are ready to begin your journey toward recovery, to start feeling better, physically, psychologically, to regain your happiness and your sanity. Here are five steps to help you. Step One ACCEPTANCE We all grieve uniquely. That is to say, that our experiences in grief, are based on our past losses, our crisis coping skills, our preparation for loss and our levels of attachment to our decedent. Grief ushers in a myriad of emotions. Our recovery, will be directly correlated with our emotional stability and strength. One might also be faced with severe or unexpected, financial responsibilities. All of these issues are thrust upon us, at a time, when we are at our weakest moments, in life. For this reason, it is advised, that one enlists, the assistance of a trusted advisor for matters of finances and estates, a trusted and valued friend to assist with home management, a caring and perhaps experienced survivor, for emotional support. If at any time, you feel overwhelmed, it is advised, that you immediately call 911 and ask for professional and skilled help. Because grief is painful, we sometimes have a tendency to ignore or deny it. Neither of these actions are healthy for the survivor. Suppressing these feelings, does not indicate recovery and will lead to future physical and psychological illness. Denial can undermine your happiness, health, future relationships, work performance and many other areas, of life. Accepting your feelings now and dealing with them, will allow you to move forward, on your road to recovery. Step Two PRACTICE SELF-CARE Due to the stress that grief inflicts upon you, survivors may not feel like taking care of themselves. This is the wrong time, to give in, to such feelings. Neglecting yourself at this point, can lead to the degradation of your health, even to death. No matter how you feel, this is the time to prioritize yourself. Make special efforts to keep yourself well hydrated, sustain a healthy diet, exercise daily, maintain proper hygiene and grooming practices. Step Three ESTABLISH A SUPPORT SYSTEM Support can come from many directions. Survivors may choose to employ professional or certified counseling, participate in group support, rely upon clergy, family or friends, or go it alone. Whatever your choice, going it alone, is not usually recommended. Humans are social beings and as such, social support, generally provides, the most efficacious outcome. Family and friends provide familiar support and personalized distraction from pain. Even our furry friends can assist with grief recovery. They are nonjudgmental and available at the drop, of a hat. If you are enlisting, the assistance of a family pet, please, be mindful of their needs, as well. Step Four DO NOT BECOME OBSESSED When a significant loved one dies, survivors experience a preoccupation of thoughts. These thoughts are intrusive and block, your peace of mind. If we are unmindful, of what is happening and if we are not proactive, this intrusive preoccupation, may indeed, become an obsession. It is at this point, that one has developed complications with their grief recovery and will need the assistance, of professionally trained grief counselors. Before you allow preoccupation to become an obsession, you might choose to employ thought-stopping techniques for distraction. If you find, that your mind is continually clouded with negative impulses or distressing scenarios, seek out grief counseling and begin adopting new practices, to move towards, regaining, your control. One such technique, is to wear a rubber band around your wrist. When you feel yourself getting lost in your thoughts and emotions, immediately snap the rubber band. The slight sting and sound of the snap, work as a reminder to redirect and control your thoughts. A variation of this technique is to simply snap your fingers. For those who only want an auditory reminder, rather than an auditory, coupled with a physical reminder, this technique, works well. Simply decide to employ the technique, after you have recognized the engagement, of obsessive thoughts. Another technique that I find helps survivors, is to begin a grief journal or a worry box. Both of these techniques, allow the survivor to write down their worries and put them away. Writing down your worries, allows you to hand them over to your thought-stopping technique. During the process, you are at liberty to begin formulating a plan and plot out your recovery action plan. This is an excellent technique that moves survivors toward recovery, through self-help. Step Five EMBRACE HAPPINESS After losing a significant loved one, you may find that you experience guilt, upon feeling happiness. Joy and happiness, are key to overcoming grief. One must allow these feelings to override sadness, if one is, to ever recover. Allow yourself to experience the pleasure of taking a walk in the park, watching your favorite TV show, listening to upbeat music or doing a fun activity with a friend. Eventually, you will start experiencing joy and happiness, which, will result in you being comfortable, by seeking them out, again. BONUS ROUND PRAYER AND SERVICE In my practice, as a funeral professional and certified grief counselor, I have found, that the number one recovery aid for loss, is prayer. My clients unanimously report, that prayer is their most effective tool, because, it allows them time for reflection, communion with a higher power, solace and it is very closely followed, by service to others. Service to others, allows survivors to transfer their focus onto someone other than themselves and onto something other, than their own woes. It allows them to develop new skills or share existing talents. It helps to build new relationships and to strengthen existing ones. Forcing ones self, out of the house, makes survivors feel needed, wanted, loved and appreciated. Feeling needed and putting others' needs before your own, gives value to yourself and it builds confidence, by re-establishing outward focus. My name is Tracy Renee Lee. I am a Certified Grief Counselor (GC-C), Funeral Director (FDIC), published author, syndicated columnist, Podcaster and founder of the “Mikey Joe Children’s Memorial” and Heaven Sent, Corp. Jews and non-Jews alike join Hoffman on a journey through his history, relating stories of his family’s immigrant background and the culture within which he was raised. He has discovered the ‘lost treasures’ of Jewish comedy and music, the songs and comedy routines that entertained hundreds of thousands of people from the Catskills to Miami Beach, from Carnegie Hall to Yiddish Vaudeville. He comes to the stage armed with books, songs, dances and jokes...” His extensive resume includes his groundbreaking productions of “Songs of Paradise” with the famous Broadway Impresario, Joe Papp, and the New York productions of “The Golden Land” and “The Rise of David Levinsky.” From New York to Los Angeles, from the stage to the big screen, Hoffman has received numerous awards and great acclaim from critics and audiences alike.
