  • Celebrate Women’s History Month: The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami Offers New Exhibitions

Celebrate Women’s History Month: The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami Offers New Exhibitions March 9, 2023 Share Through the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA)’s continued efforts to include diverse voices and perspectives, the museum is offering a robust series of educational and public programming to commemorate Women’s History Month this March. Currently on view are MOCA’s newest exhibitions, Leah Gordon’s “Kanaval” and “Didier William: Nou Kite Tout Sa Dèyè.” On view through April 16th, 2023, “Kanaval” is a survey by Photographer, Filmmaker, Curator and Writer Leah Gordon that documents twenty years of Carnival in Haiti. Curated by MOCA Curator Adeze Wilford, the exhibition consists of a series of black-and-white photographs taken on a mechanical medium format camera. The images are contextualized by a series of oral histories relayed by various troupe leaders, who also oversee the design of the costume and generate the narratives surrounding Carnival. Their stories reflect the wealth of invention, fable and self-generated mythology prevalent in much of Haitian culture. The photographs will be accompanied by a new feature-length documentary on the Carnival providing a kinetic counterpoint to the portraits. Also, on view through April 16th, 2023, “Didier William: Nou Kite Tout Sa Dèyè” is the largest solo presentation of Didier William’s career. Translated as “We’ve Left That All Behind,” the show presents an in-depth look at the Haitian-born, North Miami-raised Artist’s career and memory among the very neighborhood where he once grew up. In a blend of personal reflections, biographical anecdotes, art historical moments, some of the works in the show recontextualize historical iconographies and ideas, stripping them of their “known” truths and transforming each into something entirely new. By doing so, William playfully and unapologetically reclaims autonomy over a fragmented record of history, engaging his personal connection to the complexity of immigrant narratives and queer identity to create opportunity for investigation and redemption. MOCA’s March programming includes: MOCA Makers Printmaking workshop with Vinicius De Oliveira will be Saturday, March 11th, 2023, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. MOCA Makers are a series of adult art workshops, which bring forward an artistically interested public to work with and learn from local artists in South Florida. Topics such as figure drawing, printmaking and portrait painting are hosted for all levels of participants. Art Packs are available for purchase from the MOCA Shop. This March, participants will be studying printmaking with artist and educator Vinicius De Oliveira. The event is Free and you can RSVP at: https://111401.blackbaudhosting.com/111401/MOCA-Makers-11Mar2023 Virtual Conversations at MOCA will be held Wednesday, March 15th, 2023, 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Experience this conversation with MOCA as it explores an intersection of identities. It is often said the Vodoun makes space for difference and that it challenges the strictures of perceived heteronormativity. But, what about Haiti and its diaspora? Drawing on Didier William’s work, how might artists develop and deploy black, queer aesthetics and sensibilities to challenge heteronormativity and dysfunctional power dynamics in Haiti and beyond? Cost: The event is Free and you can RSVP at: https://111401.blackbaudhosting.com/111401/Conversations-at-MOCA-Queer-Black-and-Being--Haitian-Virtual Impromptu, A Miami City Ballet Pop Up Performance will be Friday, March 24th, 2023 from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Join MOCA on the Plaza for a special performance as part of “Impromptu: A Miami City Ballet Pop-Up Performance Series.” “Impromptu” is choreographed and performed by Miami City Ballet’s world-class professional dancers, offering audiences an accessible, fresh way to experience art in unique settings, like MOCA’s Plaza. This event is free and open to the public. The Impromptu series was born in response to the Pandemic and the need for outdoor performances in South Florida. The pop-ups are the company’s way of saying thank you to the communities that have supported Miami City Ballet throughout the years by providing innovative art that inspires, entertains and heals. The event is Free and you can RSVP at: https://tickets.miamicityballet.org/2723/2693 Jazz at MOCA Featuring Milushka will be Friday, March 31st, 2023, seating Starts at 7:00 p.m. and the concert Starts at 8:00 p.m. “Jazz at MOCA” is MOCA’s free outdoor concert series on the last Friday of every month. • 5 Steps Students Can Take Toward Entrepreneurial Careers | sun-times

5 Steps Students Can Take Toward Entrepreneurial Careers By Family Features Oct 22, 2025 Entrepreneurship Is A Career Goal For Many Working Adults. Autonomy And Personal Satisfaction Are Just A Couple Of The Benefits Of Running Your Own Business. It's a professional path about 3 in 5 teens would prefer over a traditional job, according to a survey by Junior Achievement (JA). Running a successful company depends on multiple factors, including a solid business plan, adequate startup resources and a receptive market, as well as a strong sense of responsibility, work ethic and ability to persevere under pressure. Beginning to shape the skills and mindset necessary to flourish as an entrepreneur can begin well before entering the workforce. In fact, even students in junior high and high school can begin working toward entrepreneurial goals with these tips from JA, a NonProfit that inspires and prepares young people by delivering lessons in financial literacy, work and career readiness. 1. Select Electives Wisely Students don't have to wait until they're in college to begin developing business skills and knowledge. If they have the ambition and drive to become an entrepreneur, they may find it beneficial to complement the classes needed for graduation requirements with electives that allow them to explore their interest in the business world. Some examples include accounting, marketing, finance, economics, psychology and computer science. 2. Make Part-Time Work Meaningful Many students enter the workforce in high school to start practicing money management and contribute to expenses like gas and car insurance. While most jobs available to students are service oriented and fall outside the business world, it doesn't hurt to explore options that put students closer to their entrepreneurial ambitions. For example, local small businesses may be willing to hire someone eager to learn. 3. Take Part in Programs Kids can challenge themselves by putting their knowledge into practice as real-world entrepreneurs. For example, JA's Company Program is an immersive program that fosters creativity, critical thinking and business acumen, offering students unique opportunities to explore the world of business and economics by creating real companies. Participants learn to present their business plans and results during competitions that offer learning opportunities. Additionally, at the Future Bound competition which is made possible through the support of businesses including Chick-fil-A, Delta Air Lines, Pacific Life Foundation and Staples, participants took part in seminars and mentorship. The event featured four programs that empower students with entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills - the Company of the Year National Competition, the Social Innovation Challenge, the Titan National Competition and the National Stock Market Challenge. 4. Seek a Strong Mentor Some of the best learning comes from emulating others who are successful in their fields. Meeting regularly with someone who serves as a role model can help students sharpen their vision for the future and learn from the experiences that propelled professionals into their current positions. 5. Define a Future Vision Creating an inspiration board can help motivated students compile and organize ideas. This board, whether physical or digital, can serve as a source of inspiration and help motivate students to identify and overcome obstacles while working toward bringing their visions for careers as entrepreneurs to life. Find more ideas to help students gain confidence and skills for future education and careers, and learn more about the competitions at: https://jausa.ja.org/ Photo courtesy of Shutterstock Previous Next

  • School Update And Tax Rate Set To Rollback | sun-times

School Update And Tax Rate Set To Rollback By Hallandale Beach, Mayor Joy Cooper Sep 24, 2025 Happy Rosh Hashanah To All Of My Friends, Family And The Residents Of The City Of Hallandale Beach!! The first meeting to redefine our local schools was held recently at Hallandale High School. There was a good turnout of not simply residents but teachers, students, parents, community stakeholders and elected officials. As of July 29th, 58 schools were below 70% capacity: 39 elementary, 16 middle, and 3 high schools. In our area the three middle schools were all under enrolled below 55% with McNicol the lowest at 45%. McNicol Middle School and Hallandale High will be my focus as these directly impact our city. It needs to be noted, the school boundaries are different from city boundaries so these two schools impact Hollywood, West Park and Pembroke Park. Hallandale High School was under enrolled as of last year 64% of 1,055 with 574 empty seats. Last night, that number dipped even further this school year with a number around 900. This process obviously has been ongoing for a year or two. This spring there was a survey sent out to all parents inquiring about their school choices. Obviously, many schools are under enrolled, and enrollment is down across the board. Even some charter schools are seeing a dip and capacity. The School Board survey found four areas that they needed to focus on. Better track of social and economics rather than sole focus of grades, more college and career readiness support, concentrate on supporting teachers to bolster the quality of education, address school safety and work to reduce instances of bullying and harassment. These were along with other issues like transportation, school facilities and environment and extracurricular activities. School Board Member Bulman shared that they want input from the residents as they realize how these decisions naturally impact students and families, and every child deserves a quality education. Currently, they are doing this district wide. Some schools have been closed, and properties are being looked at for sale. Others are being repurposed for support services utilized as offices for rent. As far as this school board staff shared that palimony discussions were had to combine McNicol with Hallandale High and convert Hallandale High Program to mirror the Pompano Beach model which has a waiting list. The reality is there will be some tough decisions to make over the next months on these two schools and others district wide. They asked for participation in a live survey and had a breakout session. If you want to provide your input, there is a link on the school board website. The City Commission adopted our budget which included setting the Millage Rate to roll back. This is the second time in two years. If you are homesteaded, as far as the City Tax this will be the amount listed on the last column. The system is a bit complex to understand as every property is based on its taxable values. Using my TRIM notice as an example taxable value went up 24,000 due to Save our Homes and homestead exemptions. My portion of the city tax went up $14 dollars. If you are not homestead or commercial the Tax Rate of 7.3848 will be applied to the Taxable Value. As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place on my Phone/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or you can email me at: jcooper@cohb.org . • “Under the Electric Tree” MOCA Announces Robust Public Activations

“Under the Electric Tree” MOCA Announces Robust Public Activations June 23, 2022 Share The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami is pleased to announce a Series of Public Activations, “Under the Electric Tree” at Griffing Park. Programming will include: Site-Specific Performances, Live Music, Hands-On Art Activities and more, in conjunction with the recently restored Public Artwork "Electric Tree" by Internationally Renowned Artist, Mark Handforth. "Electric Tree” was first installed just blocks away from MOCA at Griffing Park in 2011, in conjunction with the Artist’s Major Exhibition “Rolling Stop” at the Museum. The 2021 restoration of this significant Public Artwork was made possible with major support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the City of North Miami and is one of the most important Public Artworks that MOCA has commissioned in its 25-year History. Handforth’s Sculpture traces the branches of a 100-foot-wide Banyan Tree with brilliantly colored fluorescent tubes that illuminate its understory. The restoration of “Electric Tree” offers arts and culture to a Community Park that is open year-round. Handforth graduated from the Academy of Fine Art in Frankfurt and the Slade School of Fine Art in London. He is Internationally Acclaimed for his Large-Scale Installations in Public Spaces including Central Park in New York, the Dallas Museum of Art, the MCA in Chicago, as well as during the FIAC Off-Site Event in Paris. Handforth has also received public commissions from the cities of Paris, Porte de Bagnolet, Zurich and Tessinerplatz. “The stunning ‘Electric Tree’ at Griffing Park in North Miami is one of the most important Permanent Public Artworks that the Museum has commissioned. We are proud to activate the Park with consistent programming for all ages at the center of our Community,” said Chana Sheldon, Executive Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami. “The initiative launched in April with a Concert by Lang Cook Live and Brother Dan of Terrestrial Funk. MOCA welcomed guests as well as food trucks and local vendors. It was a great night! We are deeply grateful for the support of the Knight Foundation and the City of North Miami for this initiative.” “Mark Handforth's 'Electric Tree’ is an innovative and stunning work. I love that Mark has created a way for us to experience the Banyan Tree 24/7 through his light painting. The ability of Artists to interpret the world around them in new ways is endlessly fascinating and especially so when used to create Art that is easily accessible to the Public,” said Victoria Rogers, Vice President of Knight Foundation’s Arts Program. “That MOCA's new programming will connect Visual Art to great Live Performances by local talent is a great way to showcase the power of the Arts to connect us to each other and to places.” Located at 12220 Griffing Boulevard, North Miami, Florida 33161, the next event in the programming includes: Pioneer Winter in Celebration of Pride Month On Wednesday, June 29th, 2022 At 7:30 p.m. Choreographer Pioneer Winter and Sound Artist Juraj Kojs will collaborate with performers and community members on a Pride Month Activation at the Electric Tree. Collected oral histories and elder stories of ‘first prides’ will become an interactive soundscape for dancers to embody themes of memory, resilience and community – reflecting on the Electric Tree created by Artist Mark Handforth as a meeting place for Corporeal and Social Exchange.
