  • Prepare For King Tides | sun-times

Prepare For King Tides City of Hollywood Sep 17, 2025 Unusually high tides, also called King Tides, are expected periodically through early December. These seasonal high tides occur when the moon’s proximity to Earth causes tides to rise higher than normal. Combined with rising sea levels and stormy weather, King Tides can significantly increase the risk of flooding, especially in low-lying areas. Rainfall, wind direction, and wind speed can all affect how high the tides come in, sometimes pushing water levels higher than predicted. With seven miles of shoreline, nearly eight miles of canals and a flat topography, Hollywood is particularly vulnerable to sea level rise and tidal flooding. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), above-average high tides are expected on the following dates: September 6–12 (Full Moon) September 19–25 (New Moon) October 3–25 (Full and New Moon) November 1–10 (Full Moon) November 18–20 (New Moon) December 2–7 (Full Moon) High seasonal tides can flood coastal roads, parking lots and docks. Motorists should use caution, avoid driving through flooded streets and plan alternate routes when possible. During peak high tides, water levels may rise more than two and a half feet. The City of Hollywood is actively working on both short- and long-term solutions to minimize the impacts of tidal flooding. Flap gates have been installed in the stormwater system to block tidal water from flowing back through drains. Auxiliary pumps are also stationed in high-risk areas to help clear flooded streets as quickly as possible. Make a Difference in Your Neighborhood Heavy rainstorms and King Tides increase the chance of localized flooding. City crews work hard to maintain more than 157 miles of stormwater piping and nearly 4,900 catch basins, but residents can help too. By adopting a catch basin in your neighborhood, you can help keep debris out of the storm system and reduce flooding. Participation is simple: sign up to adopt, inspect the basin at least once a month, clean it as needed and submit proof of your efforts. You can even earn rewards for helping to prevent flooding and waterway pollution. Sign up today at: www.hollywoodfl.org/adoptacatchbasin - You can also help by placing coconuts in your garbage cart for collection and disposing of lawn clippings and yard waste properly to keep them from entering storm drains. For catch basin issues in the City of Hollywood, call the Underground Utilities Division at: (954) 921-3046. • A Lasting Legacy: Hallandale Beach Principal Carlton Campbell Has Impacted So Many Lives

A Lasting Legacy: Hallandale Beach Principal Carlton Campbell Has Impacted So Many Lives November 2, 2023 Share In a city that is 95 years old there are many individuals that have left a lasting mark on our history. Last Wednesday many of us that are involved with the city and our schools received the tragic news that beloved Principal Carlton Campbell had died in a car accident. The news shocked many to their core including me. There are certain people that are destined to leave a lasting legacy. Teachers are often the people that impact future generations. I believe every one of us can think back to the one teacher that truly connected and made a difference on how we felt and inspired us to become better. They cultivate an environment of learning that sets the stage for future leaders and pioneers. Back in the 1980’s when Carlton graduated from Hallandale High I am sure his teachers knew he was going to succeed but were not aware that his path would bring him back to pay it forward as principal of the school where it all began. Hallandale High School set the stage for him to receive a scholarship to Ball University. He then coached football in Wisconsin before coming back to South Florida. I know and it showed through his action and commitment, he always wanted to make sure his students had the same if not better opportunities. I feel blessed that I had the great gift of getting to know Principal Campbell. When he set out to rebuild the football stadium where he once played I had that chance to see his passion in action. I can vividly recall meeting in the Library at HHS and discussing the future of the school's campus. Like many eastern schools the facility was built in the 70’s and was slated to be replaced with a new school. That never happened as the state stopped funding replacement schools. The football field was a mess and flooded frequently. So that was the goal. At that joint public meeting then City Manager R.J. Intindola, Mayor Dorothy Ross, myself and the school board staff set out to lobby for funding. We ended up with a partnership between the School and the Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Agency to build the 800,000 plus field and track. The agreement included that the facility would be shared with our PAL athletes to play when it was not being used by the school. To this day the partnership still exists. Principal Campbell created a lasting legacy for HHS. He created an environment that created one of the best statewide football programs. Many students signed up with leading colleges and became NFL Players. It did not stop there. Principal Carlton also created a wonderful drama program and band program and many other programs to create future leaders. When I heard that rather than retiring Principal Campbell was assigned back to Hallandale Beach to lead Gulfstream K-8 I was thrilled. I knew there were great things in store for the school and especially the students. His plan was to give Hallandale Beach another 5 years. When I heard the news that he died, I was profoundly saddened on so many levels. I felt pain for his wife, three boys and his entire family. I was saddened to lose a friend and someone that I looked to for his knowledge and ability to address the needs of the school. I was extremely sad for the many students at Gulfstream who he loved as his own. I was also sad for the staff that was just settling in under his great leadership. As my Dad always said, there are certain mysteries of life. Death cannot be explained, especially so sudden and tragic as this. I had a chance to visit the school last Wednesday to share my condolences. I shared that Principal Carlton was doing what he loved. He was not just a husband, father and brother, he was an amazing educator, mentor and friend. He was and will be remembered as an amazing leader, a Principals Principal. It is ironic that in his last message to the school posted on Gulfstream’s K-8 website where he was reviewing the opening of school, he ended with this inspirational quote: Life is so short. We spend so much time sweating the small stuff; worrying, complaining, gossiping, comparing, wishing, wanting, and waiting for something bigger and better instead of focusing on all the simple blessings that surround us every day. Life is so fragile and all it takes is a single moment to change everything you take for granted. Focus on what’s important and be grateful! You are Blessed, Believe it! Live your life and leave no regrets! ~ Melanie M. Koulouris Rest In Peace Carlton Campbell, you have left a lasting legacy! < Previous News Next News >

  • Miami Art League Donates 100 Works Of Art To Coconut Grove Arts Festival’s Young Collectors Club

Miami Art League Donates 100 Works Of Art To Coconut Grove Arts Festival’s Young Collectors Club January 15, 2025 Share The Coconut Grove Arts Festival (CGAF) presented by First Horizon Bank is thrilled to announce the donation of 100 unique works from the Miami Art League. These incredible pieces will be featured as part of the festival’s much-loved Young Collectors Club, a program in its third year designed to inspire young art enthusiasts aged 5 to 12 to step into the world of art acquisition. A longtime staple of Miami’s cultural scene, the festival showcases exceptional talent and draws art enthusiasts from across the globe. Through the Young Collectors Club, children can make a $5 purchase of original paintings, drawings, and mixed-media art--all donated by current and past festival artists and, for the first time--Miami Art League members. “We have collected 100 paintings from the Miami Art League artists hailing from many corners of the world, including Japan, the Middle East, South America, and North America,” said Linda Winters, Miami Art League Board, Vice President. “The donated paintings represent what we each do as individual artists finding and developing our voices at Miami Art League.” The local, non-profit studio offers an open space for artists to explore creative visual arts, with or without instruction. In this age of Social Media, collecting art allows young people to engage in a more enriching, thoughtful experience that fosters a deeper appreciation for creativity, culture, and history, a stark contrast to the fleeting and often superficial nature of creating a piece of TikTok content or liking a post on Instagram. Unlike collecting “likes,” this program encourages youngsters to reflect, express, and have a sense of ownership over something more tangible and meaningful. With the addition of the Young Collectors Club and contributions from organizations like the Miami Art League, the festival continues to expand its impact by nurturing the next generation of art lovers. “I am grateful for this donation to the festival’s Young Collectors Club,” said Camille Marchese, CGAF Executive Director. “We are passionate about art and thrilled by the idea of young people thoughtfully engaging with art and making their own choices about what to own.” Marchese created this program because she never forgot how she felt when her mother allowed her to purchase her first piece of art at the age of eight. It was that first experience that advanced her lifelong goal of collecting, and for that, she hopes to instill an appreciation for art in children who will get to pick their very own piece that calls to them. During its first year of activation in 2022, the Young Collectors Club became so popular that kids had purchased everything on-site by the festival's second day. That’s precisely the kind of excitement that festival organizers were going for. The CGAF believes that collecting art builds a sense of ownership and responsibility, sparking a lifelong appreciation for creativity. This early connection to art nurtures a deeper understanding of the world and inspires young individuals to support and participate in artistic communities. • The Beloved Musical Comes To South Florida

The Beloved Musical Comes To South Florida April 4, 2024 Share Hello Dolly! one of the most beloved musicals in Broadway history, will close out the 2024 Broadway at LPAC Season. The production, which will star three-time Carbonell Award-Winning Actress Angie Radosh as the irrepressible Dolly Gallagher Levi, will run from April 4th through April 21st at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center. “I am absolutely thrilled and humbled at the idea of doing this role…it has been on my bucket list for a long time,” Radosh says. “Every actor has their bucket list and as the years go by, the list gets shorter and roles pass us by. When I first read The Matchmaker so many years ago, I fell in love with the character of Dolly Levi and then, seeing Carol Channing in Hello Dolly! …well, that really made me appreciate the character even more….and here I am getting ready to finally bring this wonderful woman to life!!” Hello, Dolly! is based on Thornton Wilder’s 1938 farce The Merchant of Yonkers, which Wilder revised and retitled The Matchmaker in 1954. The musical, with lyrics and music by Jerry Herman, and book by Michael Stewart, follows the romantic and comic exploits of Dolly Gallagher Levi, turn-of-the century matchmaker and ‘woman who arranges things’, as she travels to Yonkers, New York to find a match for the ‘well-known unmarried half-a-millionaire’ Horace Vandergelder. Hello, Dolly! premiered on Broadway on January 16th, 1964, at the St. James Theatre. Opening with Carol Channing in the title role, the show ultimately ran for 2,844 performances, making it – at the time – the longest-running Broadway musical in history. Among its many awards, Dolly garnered 10 1964 Tonys (including Best Musical, Author, and Composer/Lyricist) and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical. Michael Ursua will do double duty as the show’s Director and Music Director, and Alex Jorth will serve as the production’s choreographer. Hello Dolly! is produced by Kevin Barrett and Arts Center Management. “Hello Dolly! happens to be one of my all-time favorite musicals and its composer and lyricist, Jerry Herman, remains my favorite composer,” Ursua says. It is an absolute classic in musical theater. The characters are loveable, and the audience can identify with their desire for romance and adventure. They bravely choose to step out of their comfort zones for love and yes, for money (which is really just a way to live generously of course). And Dolly helps each of them find their way and find each other. In the end it is the community that is the prize. I am encouraged by these characters … encouraged to be brave, to love more, to be more generous and to dance whenever, however, with whomever I can.” Ursua has assembled a stellar cast to populate Dolly’s 1898 New York setting – along with Radosh, Christopher Dreeson will star as Horace Vandergelder, with Sam Joseph as Cornelius Hackl, Ally Rosenblum (Star of LPAC’s 2023 production of Always…Patsy Cline) as Irene Molloy, Kristi Rose Mills as Minnie Fay, Joel Hunt as Barnaby Tucker, Erica Kaylee as Ermengarde, Dru Loman as Ambrose Kemper, Britte Steele as Ernestina, and Lovell Rose as Rudolph. Ensemble members are Bryce Bayer, Nia Bourne, Kalista Curbelo, Eytan Deray, Alexandra Dow, Desir Dumerjuste, Stephen Eisenwasser, Eli Flynn, Santiago Garza, Amanda Lopez, Michael Materdomini, Izaiah Scott, Caroline Slagle, Larry Toyter, Alexandra Van Hasselt, and Herbert Welch. Tickets for Hello Dolly! are on sale now and can be purchased online at: https://www.lpacfl.com . Or by calling the LPAC box office at: (954) 777-2055. Tickets range in price from $45 to $65. The Lauderhill Performing Arts Center is located at 3800 Northwest 11th Place, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33311, in the Central Broward Regional Park on the Northeast corner of Sunrise Boulevard and State Road 7. • It's Budget Time: What's The Process & What To Expect

It's Budget Time: What's The Process & What To Expect By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper August 24, 2023 Share This week’s news: It is budget time. Our budget cycle kicks off around February and culminates with two Public Hearings where the Final Budget and any Amendments are adopted. We also adopted the two Safe Neighborhood Districts’ Budgets and the Fire Fee. The good news is the Millage Rate Fire Fee remained the same. This does not mean individuals will not see an increase in their Taxes. The State Requirements show an increase in Market and Fair Market Taxable Values. When Values go up, taxes go up. Homestead Property Percentage Tax Increases are capped at 3 percent and Non-Homestead Properties are Taxed at Value. This system has been in place for years and is not changing anytime soon. It is called Save Our Homes For A Reason. It protects Homeowners that live here full time from Tax Increases as a result of extreme jumps in Values due to speculation and spikes due to Market Conditions. It is not at all a perfect system and obviously, we are seeing the impact now on the Rental Market. On the other hand, Values are so high it is doing its job to keep residents in their homes. Over the course of the past five years, we have been implementing a Budget Stabilization Process. If you've followed my articles, I covered this topic extensively in my State Of The City Address and the South Florida Sun Times ran multiple articles covering it. We have made tough decisions and stopped kicking the can down the road. Recently I had an opportunity to speak with someone in regard to municipal services and the disconnect individuals have about what we actually provide as a City to our residents, the costs and more importantly the value. While the trim notice is not a welcoming piece of mail, since it is a statement of Taxes. I will tell you that we are utilizing every bit of those Tax Dollars to ensure we stabilize, maintain and in some cases increase services. It needs to be noted that when you get a Tax Bill it includes every Taxing District and Special District for Broward County. Ours is a portion of your Tax Bill. Municipal Taxes and Fees provide the necessary life sustaining and Quality Of Life Services that are Required by Law for us to provide. We watch every dollar and individuals would be surprised to just see what you get for each dollar. I like to say you get round the clock Security and Fire Protection, round the clock Emergency Healthcare, Safe Drinking Water. The ability to flush your toilets, Trash Removal, Roads, Parks to recreate and other daily items that are often taken for granted. I like to break them down to a dollar. The Ad Valorem Taxes go to the General Fund: $0.30 of these Funds go to Day-To-Day Operations, Administrative Charges from the various Departments, Non-Departmental Costs and many items that you would expect are needed to run a business. In addition, this portion includes transfers to the CRA, Community Redevelopment Agency. The next largest use of the Fund includes: Public Safety: $0.45. $0.26 of each dollar goes towards Police Services and $0.20 goes towards Fire and Rescue. While we do have a Fire Fee that is $265, this Fee can only be used for specific items relative to Fire and Apparatuses. The General Fund Supplements the other costs to run Fire and Emergency Medical Services. $0.12 goes to Staffing Costs of the City Manager, Procurement, Budget Monitoring, the City Attorney, City Clerk Information Technology, Human Resources and the City Commission. The City also provides Building Services which include: Code Permitting and other Business Operations. $0.03 cents of each dollar accounts for those services. $0.05 goes towards our Parks and Recreation and Open Spaces. Human Services accounts for $0.02 of each dollar and Public Works accounts for one cent of every dollar. So, you can see every dollar is accounted for and goes to services people depend on. The General Fund is only part of the City Budget. Quite often you hear complaints about budgets getting larger. Our budget includes all Capital Works Projects and this year we are embarking on a huge Citywide Rehab and Replacement of our Underground Infrastructure. Hundreds of thousands of dollars will be spent on Water Systems, Sewer Pipes and Pumping Stations. These projects do not just take brick and mortar but involve Staff from multiple Departments. Capital Projects also include: Replacement and Maintenance of our Parks System. This year we are Upgrading Equipment that cleans our Beaches. As we stabilized the Budget, we are also introducing some more programs at our Parks. As a note, we are always looking for partnerships at our Park Facilities. If you have a Special Program that you would like to offer please reach out to our Director. We also continue to Upgrade and maintain our Technology Division to ensure we provide a Safe and Reliable Platform for users to access Services and Information. While in today’s world, everything is moving to Online and to Cloud Based Solutions and these Services cost money. We currently have a great Budget Portal where residents can go Online and see our Budget in an interactive way. Permitting, Business Licenses and Financial Services have all moved Online. We still have In-Person Services for all our residents and businesses Mondays through Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. This past Wednesday, we held our Final Budget Workshop. All of them are Online and you can also watch all of our Meetings on our website at: www.Cohb.org Visit the site and click on Agendas. If you have not seen our site, I encourage all of our readers to visit it. Sign up for Notifications. The First Budget Hearing is scheduled on September 13th at 5:05 p.m. and the Final Budget Hearing is scheduled on September 26th at 5:05 p.m. Both meetings are at City Hall located at 400 South Federal Highway. Every resident is encouraged to come out to participate or watch the meeting live. As always please feel free to contact me anytime with your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place! I am available at: jcooper@cohb.org . Or: joycooper@aol.com . Creating The Coffee Shop Vibe at Home By BPT May 9, 2024 Share You may have heard of "core" trends that center around a specific niche, like cottagecore (accessorizing your home like a lake house) or balletcore (a style that emphasizes elegance, ballet flats and tulle). The latest "-core" trend sweeping the country is cafécore, the art of recreating the coffee shop vibe at home. Pinterest Predicts 2024 calls cafécore one of the hottest trends of the year. It's about bringing the atmosphere of a coffee shop, including your favorite coffee drinks, to your kitchen. Words like warm, comfortable, inviting and, of course, delicious, come to mind. Here are some tips for turning your kitchen into your favorite coffee shop. It starts with coffee. Cafecore starts with the ability to make your favorite espresso drinks like lattes, cappuccinos and more at home. In the past, espresso machines were inaccessible, complicated and, frankly, too big and clunky for at-home use. Enter the KitchenAid Espresso Collection. The line consists of four machines: one Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine with Burr Grinder, and three Fully-Automatic Espresso Machines with features to suit your tastes and preferences. All are designed to help you elevate your coffee experience at home, taking the guesswork out of being your own barista. These models can do everything except choose the beans for you - precise dosing so you'll always have a perfect shot of espresso, bean grinders, automatic milk frothing with options for non-dairy milks (on select models), drink personalization settings with up to six user profiles on some machines, even an intuitive touch screen. And dare we say it? The KitchenAid Espresso Collection is pretty, too. This is the gorgeous foundational piece to build your personal caffeine aesthetic around. Create a coffee corner. While the KitchenAid Espresso Collection is stunning on its own, the appliances are designed to complement a variety of tastes, so you can customize your home coffee station to perfectly suit what you love. Include pretty mugs, a tray for flavored syrups, napkins, stir sticks, fun coasters, a basket for croissants and anything else you enjoy with your coffee. You can even deck out a bar cart with a water dispenser and any favorite decorations and glassware that complement your style. A comfortable place to sit. The best coffee shops have an ambiance that makes you want to sit for a spell, relax and enjoy. Whether it's a sunny spot with an armchair and end table or a cozy corner perfect for curling up with a good book, once you find your perfect perch, trick it out with a cordless coffee warmer, charge cords for your laptop and phone, and a plush blanket that invites you to settle in. Accents! Pinterest is a great source to find accent ideas to make your coffee corner stand out. A custom chalkboard to write notes and favorite recipes on, a fun wallpaper or a sentimental piece of art can all take your space to the next level. This trend is all about creating a comfy space in your home that celebrates your love of coffee, invites relaxation, and provides a lovely start to your day.
