Hollywood Is Getting Wild: Earns Recertification As Community Wildlife Habitat & Mayor’s Chess Challenge
October 13, 2022 Share The City has again achieved recertification! The Community Wildlife Habitat program is designed to encourage property owners to create a habitat suitable for native species. Community-wide certification is earned by certifying individual properties (homes, parks, schools, businesses, and others), through education and outreach. Points are earned by engaging community members in habitat restoration projects, providing resources like native plant lists, and communicating through websites and social media. This year, the City earned points for restoring existing dunes on Hollywood Beach. These dunes provide a habitat for endangered plant species, as well as food and cover for native South Florida birds and butterflies. Points were also earned for educating the community about their carbon footprint and ways to reduce it. Outreach events like Earth Day and Food Waste Prevention Week further contributed to the City’s overall point total. But the City cannot earn this certification alone, we need residents to certify their own yard as a Backyard Habitat. A big thank you to everyone who is already providing host plants for our native butterflies, nectar for pollinators, berries and seeds for spring and fall migrants and places to raise young for our year-round residents and seasonal breeders! For those interested in certifying their property, it’s simple and you don’t even have to have a yard. A container garden on your patio or balcony can support pollinators and other native wildlife. To certify your wildlife habitat, you need to provide, food, water, cover, places to raise young (butterfly host plants count!) and use sustainable practices. For more details and to see the National Wildlife Federation’s certification checklist, go to National Wildlife Federation | Certify. 8th Annual Mayor’s Chess Challenge

  • Call The Experts for Mold, Mildew & Water Damage: 1st Priority Restoration Will Help Solve Your Problem and work with your insurance

Call The Experts for Mold, Mildew & Water Damage: 1st Priority Restoration Will Help Solve Your Problem and work with your insurance August 19, 2021 Share 1st Priority Restoration is the first company to call following significant water damage. If your home has been damaged by water from a leaking pipe, intruding water from all the current rains or mold damage from moisture over time. How are you going to address these problems in your home? A Restoration Company such as 1st Priority Restoration is usually the first company to call following significant damage to a home from floods, water damage, sewage backup and other major water events. The job of a restoration company is to clean up the mess and to preserve the home, protect the home and its contents so that further damage will not occur. Flood damage can be found in any geographical area, regardless of elevation. The causes of flooding can range from natural disasters, burst pipes, leaking pipes, rain storms or sewer lines that are backing up. Even in a condo, you could have a water leak in your wall, under a toilet or behind a kitchen cabinet creating mold that can cause damage to your property and your health. 1st Priority Restoration can find the source of the leak, fix it, restore your property and work directly with your insurance. Regardless of the cause, restoration professionals are called upon to repair water damage, mold damage and restore flooded properties. The water damage restoration process is highly regulated in order to ensure that properties damaged by flood or sewer events, can be effectively restored to a safe space for a homeowner to remain safe during the cleanup. You need a company such as 1st Priority Restoration who you can trust to do the job correctly. The process is simple, when 1st Priority Restoration arrives, they will thoroughly walk through your home and discuss the areas that need to be cleaned & restored to their original condition. Your insurance company adjuster or claim representative may recommend what and how your home should be cleaned, but in the end, it is your decision to make. In the past year, we have all heard the word “Mitigation” more times than we can count, but with water damage, that is exactly what needs to be done. Water damage restoration does not stop at restoring your real estate back to proper functioning. The professionals at 1st Priority will inspect the underlying causes that have caused the water damage in the first place and make sure there won’t be a reoccurrence. They will repair all of the damaged structures and replace the materials to make your property safe, for years to come. If your property has been exposed to water damage, you may have to do water mitigation. Strict actions are required in water mitigation, such as: removal of damaged materials such as drywall and flooring. Molds and mildew that have accumulated in areas in your property will be disinfected and deodorized to restore a healthy environment. Further cleaning and deodorizing should be done to make sure that your real estate is back in tip-top shape. Water damage mitigation should happen immediately after flooding or water buildup. Take action immediately, because letting your property sit in water can cause further damages and expenses. Materials soaking in water collect microbes and spread water-borne diseases. Furniture, wood flooring and walls will crack, sag and collect fungi after prolonged exposure to moisture. If your property is particularly old, it may be time to replace materials such as pipes to prevent a reoccurrence of water damage. If pipes are behind walls, it may require more extensive repairs. The water mitigation process will depend on how long your property has been exposed to water. Air humidifiers and drying equipment must be turned on around the clock in areas with severe water damage. Mold spores are especially dangerous to health and thorough cleaning and disinfecting should be done as part of the water damage mitigation. It is advisable to get the temperature, humidity and moisture of your property tested to see if it has been restored to normal standards, 1st Priority professionals can handle the entire process. After 1st Priority Restor-ation evaluates the work and equipment needed to clean your home, they will provide you QUICKLY with an estimate or contract/services. NEVER FOOL AROUND WITH MOLD & MILDEW: When it comes to mold and mildew, we cannot take those potential hazards lightly. A mold problem can cause you to experience dizziness, anxiety, depression and even hallucinations. If you have been experiencing a diminished attention span or problems with your memory, it might be a good idea to have your home inspected for black mold by a mold remediation crew. For people sensitive to mold, inhaling or touching mold spores can cause allergic reactions, including sneezing, runny nose, red eyes and skin rashes. People with serious mold allergies may have more severe reactions, including shortness of breath. At 1st Priority Restora-tion, this is what they do 365 days a year, nobody knows how to prevent potential dangers like they do. By dialing: 1 (800) 617-1112 – you can save financially and your health as well! LEAK DETECTION: One tiny water leak can create huge problems in a home or business. An undetected water pipe leak will not only dramatically increase your utility bills, but it can also lead to even more expensive water damage and mold. If you’ve had higher than average water bills, constantly have to refill your pool or hear running water, it’s time to call the leak detection specialists at 1st Priority Restoration! Is water pipe leak detection possible if the pipes are behind a wall? Yes, using the newest state-of-the-art detection tools, highly trained technicians are able to locate water pipe leaks that are hidden behind walls. They can even provide water plumbing leak detection within concrete slab foundations. Will insurance cover the cost of plumbing leak detection services? That all depends on your home's insurance plan. In many situations, when there is a need for water damage restoration, many insurance companies will cover the related costs. 1st Priority Restoration representatives can work directly with your home insurance company to verify the need for the plumbing leak detection service, cause of the problem and the repairs that will be required to remedy the situation. MOLD AND YOUR HOME: Mold is found both indoors and outdoors. Mold can enter your home through open doorways, windows, vents, heating and air conditioning systems. Mold in the outside air can also attach itself to clothing, shoes, bags and pets, which can be carried indoors. Mold will grow in places with a lot of moisture, such as around leaks in roofs, windows, pipes or where there has been flooding. Mold grows well on paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles and wood products. Mold can also grow in dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation, drywall, carpet, fabric and upholstery. With all of the rain and storms we have been having these past months, you can see a pattern of mold growth that will last. From leaks, flooding and driving rain, mold growth is a certainty in South Florida. If you are concerned that you might have a mold or mildew problem, it is best to call the professionals for a complete evaluation of your home. Your health is your most important asset, so just like you go see a doctor for a test, your home needs testing as well. VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION: There are some important ways that we can prevent the spread of mold and what you can do to get rid of it. Keep an eye out for hidden leaks: Wet spots on your ceiling, the baseboards or on the floor are a telltale sign of a leaky pipe or roof. Your home's pipes are behind drywall, which can leave a small leak unnoticed. Mold can grow behind those walls and filter into the air through ducts or pipes. At 1st Priority, they can come in and assess the situation before it gets worse. Did you know that many air conditioner systems/ducts are susceptible to mold growth? They often trap moisture, creating a breeding ground for spores. Bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms create a lot of excess heat and humidity, especially here in south Florida – whether it is from a shower, stove or even a dryer, all of these areas should be well ventilated. Education is key to anything – when our health is at stake – knowing that mold spores can lay dormant for years after they are produced and could begin growing again at any time, it is extremely important to know. Because of this, regular cleanings and having 1st Priority Restoration to depend on, will certainly make our lives much easier. Ever wonder why you or your children wake up coughing and sneezing on a regular basis? The CDC may have the answer. According to the CDC, in 2004 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) found that there was sufficient evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, coughing, sneezing and wheezing in otherwise healthy people and in individuals susceptible with compromised immune conditions. Mold or mold spores may cause asthma attacks in people who have asthma and are allergic to mold. Even in some nonallergic individuals, mold can cause sym-ptoms of irritation in the eyes, skin and airways. For example, the "black mold" Stachybotrys, along with some other types of mold, produce toxins known as mycotoxins that can cause irritation of the skin and airways in susceptible individuals. Some-times, people may develop se-vere reactions to mold exposure, but cleaning and sanitizing by professionals you can trust, can help mitigate MOST OF the health issues. EXPERIENCE IS EVERYTHING: With decades in the business, 1st Priority Restoration is a reputable company with over 20 employees that are licensed and insured. They have been doing all types of cleaning, sanitizing, leak/mold detection and water damage restoration for more than a decade. • From Accessories To Assets - Progressive e-Tailer Redefining Value In Gold Jewelry | sun-times

From Accessories To Assets - Progressive e-Tailer Redefining Value In Gold Jewelry By Merilee Kern, MBA Jul 30, 2025 In Today’s Hugely Saturated And Competitive Jewelry Marketplace, Distinguishing Jewelry Retailers Can Be A Challenge For Consumers. From Lack Of Brand Differentiation, Compromised Product Transparency, Value Price Wars, Overlapping Product Offerings And Inconsistent Quality Assurance To Overwhelming Digital Noise And Lack Of Personal Brand Connections, Many Companies In The Space Struggle To Stand Out. One company taking the uber-competitive jewelry retail industry by storm is Sonalore, which has carved out a distinctive identity through a combination of brand discriminators. These include extreme pricing value without the industry standard artificially inflated markups; transparency in their product offerings; exclusive designs crafted by global artisans; ethically and responsibly sourced precious stones and fair wages for its workers; virtual try-ons; compelling brand storytelling; and a superior customer experience. While this mix of USPs is a powerful elixir resonating in the marketplace, perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of Sonalore’s approach is that it sells its 18-karat gold jewelry from the perspective of it being a sound investment—not an expense—that enduringly holds its value. This amid the company’s robust “lifetime buyback guarantee” program based on the fair current price valuation of gold that, incidentally, has the potential to increase beyond the purchase price of the item. Gold is, in fact, a heralded investment commodity amid its historically proven performance in various economic environments. Among other drivers, gold investments are known for global demand and liquidity, serving as a tangible asset with no counterparty risk and offering a safe haven during economic turmoil. Below is a conversation with Sonalore Co-Founders Nidhi Singhvi, who serves as CEO, and Navya Reddy detailing why the brand’s approach best serves today’s mindful and intentional breed of consumers and investors as well as the modern jewelry retail marketplace at large. Q: First, how would you describe and explain the Sonalore brand to those unfamiliar? NS: Sonalore is an AI-powered unified platform for buying and selling fine jewelry, providing upfront, transparent material and crafting cost breakdowns with one click transactability. This is similar to how Carvana revolutionized car sales by offering clear pricing, or how Zillow brought transparency with "Zestimate." Buyers can also confidently purchase jewelry at transparent prices with assurance of a lifetime buyback guarantee. Beyond providing gorgeous jewelry at affordable prices without ridiculous markups the industry is plagued by, we position gold jewelry as the investment that it is. Customers can sell their items back to the company as easily as they bought it, getting instant and fair buyback valuations higher than comps based on the current market price of gold. Our seamless logistics are also appealing since it helps customers easily refresh their collections anytime. Q: Your company is built on a model of affordability. What is this founded on? NR: Yes, the $60 Billion unbranded jewelry market is founded on insane markups, often 3 to five times, and are disconnected from the metal content. In fact, most jewelry companies are operating on 65%+ gross margins, so they are not selling gold to you but rather are selling undifferentiated products with absurdly inflated pricing. Our customers also lament that they have jewelry lying around that they don’t wear anymore and still have to spend yet more to get new jewelry to enhance and modernize their collections in line with changing personal preferences and trends. We also foster loyalty and trust with our customers by provisioning our pieces with a Certificate of Authenticity akin to other investments. In all, we endeavor to change the fine jewelry market with a unique value proposition of great pricing combined with will utmost product detail transparency—one removing information asymmetry in the jewelry market to foster deep consumer loyalty. This we combine with social responsibility and conscious consumerism via ethically-sourced and made items as well as sustainability via free upgrades and the flexibility to sell back our wares at any time. Q: What are the main challenges and pain points consumers face when trying to sell their jewelry? NS: The jewelry re-sell market's value is $30-40 Billion, so consumers clearly have this need and desire. But, re-monetizing their jewelry can be a headache via person-to-person attempts or at pawn shops—this noting that our own survey showed fully 90% of people have considered selling their jewelry, but would not feel comfortable walking into a store to do so. Other resale pain points include opaque pricing, where customers receive only 20-60% of the value, and a laborious process involving 2-4 evaluations with a 1-4 week lead time for estimates. Additionally, there is uncertainty around the sale, as many venues are unwilling to hold inventory. The overall anti-luxury experience actively discourages casual sellers from engaging in the process. Our AI powered “SonaQuote” buyback tool is quick and transparent. It gives consumers the ability to track the value of their virtual “jewelry box” over both time and market movements as well as a one-click sell process whenever the consumer wants. Q: How have consumer perceptions of gold as an asset evolved in recent years, and how does your product model appeal to changing attitudes? NR: People are increasingly knowledgeable about gold, especially across the U.S., and positioning our products to be “worn then reborn” with a “buy-enjoy-sell back-repeat model” is resonating with customers. Jewelry is largely seen as an investment in rest of the world like, in Asia, jewelry is regarded as an asset and bought and sold like one and maintains over 70% resale value as compared to less than 30% in the U.S. Generally, those closely following price action and are aware that gold is currently around $2,700 per ounce. The number one sentiment we hear is, ‘gold has been crazy this year, and with all the world's uncertainty, it's only going up.’ Many customers also mention how gold prices have significantly increased. While just a few years ago gold was more affordable, now the rising prices make it feel like a more serious investment. Family dynamics also play a big role in gold's appeal, with many regarding it as a cherished heirloom gift from parents with intrinsic fiscal value. Q: Can you describe your background and how it relates to having established yourself in the jewelry industry? NS: Navya and I grew up in Asia where jewelry is considered investment. It has been a source of immense self-respect and power for women in a society where women didn’t have ownership of other assets and didn’t have an income. Jewelry was something that was a woman’s own treasure chest and, when need be, her own war chest. There are numerous stories in India where women moved their entire families forward using jewelry to fund dreams. Navya have similar stories too—when there was a need to further our experiences, our moms went against other family members' wishes and “made things happen” realizing the true worth of their jewelry caches. Navya and I want to bring the same power to jewelry in America. Women in the U.S. are spending billions on jewelry, but are not accumulating any intentional wealth with it. We want to turn our customers into gold investors, and help them pass on this wealth to whomever they want. Sonalore helps women in America do just that and, in doing so, we are truly revolutionizing the jewelry experience. Our products are both a pleasure to wear and smart to own. Q: OK, let’s talk specifically about the gold commodity landscape specifically a bit. Why is gold a smart investment today, even with inflation and cooling prices? NR: In short, macro uncertainty. The ongoing geopolitical tensions, including two major wars and trade uncertainties, make gold an attractive safe-haven asset, providing stability in investment portfolios during economic challenges. Its historical performance, such as during the 2008 financial crisis, underscores its resilience as a store of value. At Sonalore, 60% of our customers have expressed interest in gold as an investment, reflecting its strong appeal in today’s macroeconomic climate. Additionally, major central banks are diversifying away from the US dollar, adding near-record amounts of gold to their reserves in 2023—a trend that signals long-term structural support for gold prices. Gold also offers significant portfolio diversification benefits, particularly for millennials, who now outpace baby boomers and Gen X-ers as the largest group of gold investors. With consistently low or negative correlation to other asset classes, gold remains an ideal tool for reducing portfolio risk. Q: What economic indicators suggest physical gold will remain a strategic investment in 2025? NS: Potential rate cuts in 2025 are expected to lower real yields, enhancing gold’s attractiveness as an investment since it doesn’t bear interest. Additionally, the anticipated “pivot” in monetary policy could further drive institutional investors toward gold, viewing it as a reliable hedge against potential currency devaluation. Q: What do you recommend as the allocation strategy for physical gold? NR: The optimal strategy depends on the investor's goals. For new investors, it’s recommended to focus primarily on coins, allocating roughly 80% of their investment to them. Coins are easier to sell in smaller quantities, providing greater flexibility for partial liquidation, which is ideal for testing the market. For larger investments, a balanced approach with a mix of bars and coins—typically a 60/40 split—is more suitable. Bars serve as long-term core holdings, while coins offer the flexibility needed for quick liquidity. Q: What would you say are common misconceptions about physical gold investments? NS: One common misconception about investing in gold is that it is hard to sell. While selling gold may not be as instant as selling stocks, both online and offline platforms offer reliable liquidity options. At Sonalore, we provide unique liquidity for gold jewelry at prevailing gold prices, making it easier for investors to access their investment. Another misconception is that you need a lot of money to start investing in gold. In reality, gold investment can begin with small denominations, such as coins. Additionally, Sonalore allows customers to invest in gold while buying jewelry, such as purchasing 18K gold hoops and watching their value fluctuate with the market. Q: How would you say investors should think about liquidity in physical gold? NR: The gold market is highly liquid, fueled by strong institutional and retail demand, with multiple sales channels available both online and offline. Coins offer the quickest liquidity, making them easier to sell to government mints or private buyers. Proper documentation is essential to ensure smooth transactions, and investors should stay informed about market fluctuations to make well-timed decisions. By staying aware of the market, investors can make informed choices that maximize the value of their gold investments. By positioning gold jewelry as a valuable asset that can be worn and sold back, Sonalore aligns with the growing interest in gold as a hedge against economic uncertainty and as a means of wealth accumulation. Also with a deep understanding of consumer pain points, such as opaque pricing and laborious resale processes, the company’s innovative model streamlines the jewelry investment experience, fostering customer trust and loyalty. In all, Sonalore is redefining the jewelry industry by offering a transparent, customer-centric approach that focuses on both affordability and investment potential. The company’s commitment to eliminating inflated markups, providing clear pricing, and offering a lifetime buyback guarantee has resonated deeply with consumers seeking not only beautiful jewelry, but also a smart investment. Hat’s off to this innovative startup transforming how consumers view and invest in jewelry, making it both a personal and financial asset for the modern world. Previous Next

  • The Coconut Grove Arts Festival: Aims to Make A Collector Out Of Children

The Coconut Grove Arts Festival: Aims to Make A Collector Out Of Children February 16, 2023 Share In keeping with the Coconut Grove Arts Festival’s new theme, a different kind of hue, approximately 100 new artists have been added to the roster. While they aren’t new to the art world, their vision and works of art will certainly add a lot of novelty to this year’s show. Some of those artists have even agreed to “donate” art, which will be earmarked for the Young Collectors Club, a place within the show where kids armed with a few dollars can go inside without their parents to purchase their first work of art. Over 100 artists have agreed to donate at least one of their pieces to help kickstart the next generation of art collectors. “The most enthusiastic patrons of the Coconut Grove Art Festival are under the age of 12. Early impressions and memories of the experience of seeing and buying original art last a lifetime. We are proud of our young collectors and love to connect with them,” said Diane French whose work involves dry pigment painting. For years, artists have left an impression on art lovers of all ages. Painter and printmaker Ronna Katz knows too well that there’s nothing quite like the thrill of buying your very first piece of art. “There’s the feeling of empowerment in knowing you have selected and have a say in the matter of adopting the art that resonates for you. It’s a feeling of independence, adulthood, and coolness,” says Katz who cherishes those moments when a kid collector returns to her booth ‘to meet the artist’ and asks questions or requests an autograph as evidenced by these pictures and a note that one young collector left behind. One well-known bronze sculptor started his collection at age 12. John Vise is a testament to the importance of encouraging children's sense of wonder. “There was a famous artist who had a studio in our small town and my father was buying one of his pieces. While he browsed these big, elaborate constructions, I wandered the shop. Tucked along one windowsill, the artist's wife had little cast dragons that she made. Not nearly as detailed and not nearly as expensive. Both my dad and I walked out with a piece that day. It didn't matter that mine was twenty dollars and his was several hundred. I still have that piece and maybe more importantly I have the memory of discovery, of wonder and of pride of finding this treasure,” said Vise. Some of the art that will be on display has a direct link to the artist’s unique story and their work centers around an important theme. Whether it was a way to protect endangered species, sound the horn on slavery or come out of hiding, it’s clear that these artists have something to say. Take for instance, Edwin Lester from Philadelphia who’s participated in the past. He brings a very sophisticated and technically advanced style of realism to his figurative, atmospheric paintings, his work reflects what’s important and personal to him. Spending a few minutes speaking to artists at their respective booths could make the difference between just having a nice piece of art or proudly owning a true masterpiece. The following artists are just a small example of what organizers have known all along – that The Coconut Grove Arts Festival is truly special in every sense of the word. Jeribai Andrew-Jaja Originally from Nigeria, Africa, Jeribai came to the U.S. to study and has a Master's Degree Graduate in cyber security. His strong passion and fascination with Art and storytelling led him to his Art practice. He created a series of artworks documenting his journey of self-love and acceptance after being diagnosed with a skin condition called Vitiligo. His works seek to capture deep emotions and express strength. "I create hyper-realistic drawings using charcoal and graphite and generously spend about 150 hours on some drawings. My goal is to capture the entire essence and tell that story because we all have stories," said Jeribai Andrew-Jaja. Her work navigates the emotional landscapes of her subjects and their environments, driving awareness around causes such as human trafficking, indigenous wisdom and global unity. She is the recipient of a Lucie Humanitarian Award, presented at Carnegie Hall, honoring the greatest achievements of master photographers. “I use a 19th-century 4x5" field camera and Hasselblad. I wish to encourage a dialogue about our interlocking world's beauty, diversity and meaning. The photographic artworks are printed in my studio using a state-of-the-art Chromogenic printer,” said Lisa Kristine. There, she began sketching the lions, elephants, tigers and others that became her life's focus; endangered species. Her passion has taken her to Africa more than 25 times, among other places. She founded a nonprofit to use art as a teaching tool for children in rural communities, mostly about the beauty of their wild surroundings. As a result, she’s been able to fund over a dozen scholarships sending women and men to ranger and wildlife college. (California) http://aelondonstudio.com Oliver Schnoor A jeweler at heart, Oliver suffered an unfortunate accident where his hand was practically severed. He made a full recovery and went on to win Best of Show in The St. Louis Art Show, a rare feat for a jeweler. “I am a contemporary jewelry artist that uses traditional metalsmithing techniques as well as modern technologies to create edgy, one-of-a-kind designs. Nature is a constant source of my designs,” says Oliver Schnoor. • 500 FREE Microchips Available: Should Your Pet Become Lost, This Could Be The Difference

500 FREE Microchips Available: Should Your Pet Become Lost, This Could Be The Difference June 30, 2022 Share July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month, and the Humane Society of Broward County will be offering 500 FREE microchips for pet owners. The chips are available in the shelter’s vaccine clinic at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale. The clinic is open Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. no appointment necessary (it is closed daily from 11:40 – 1:00 p.m.) Thanks to technology, a microchip is the size of a grain of rice and administered under the skin between a pet’s shoulder blades. When a chip is properly registered it contains the owner’s contact information. Should your pet become lost and taken to a vet’s office or shelter, a scanner is used to see if the animal has a chip and then the owner can be contacted. It is important to understand that a microchip is not a tracking device. It is also imperative that if you move or change your phone number, that you update the contact information with the microchip company. Microchipped pets are reunited with their owners frequently. In April 2019, a 2.5 year old German Shepherd named Cedar was reunited with her Southwest Ranches family after being stolen from her home at the age of four months. Found injured in a ditch by law enforcement in Colorado, Cedar was taken to a vet office where a registered chip was located by the scanner. She was flown home after she recovered. Should your pet become lost, a microchip could mean the difference between being reunited quickly or waiting for days, weeks or months in a shelter, rescue or someone’s home hoping you will find your lost pet. According to the AVMA – American Veterinary Medical Association’s website, “A study of more than 7,700 stray animals at animal shelters showed that dogs without microchips were returned to their owners 21.9% of the time, whereas microchipped dogs were returned to their owners 52.2% of the time. Cats without microchips were reunited with their owners only 1.8% of the time, whereas microchipped cats went back home 38.5% of the time. (Lord et al, JAVMA, July 15, 2009)” For microchipped animals that weren't returned to their owners, most of the time it was due to incorrect owner information (or no owner information) in the microchip registry database – so don't forget to register and keep your information updated. Microchipping is crucial to your pet’s well-being. In addition, a collar and ID tag are a visible sign of identification and should be kept on your pet at all times. That way, if your dog or cat wanders from home and is found, you can be reunited quickly. The Humane Society of Broward County is a private, non-profit organization that is not affiliated with any national or local group with a similar name. The shelter’s programs and services are made possible by the generosity of those that want to make a difference for animals and people. To learn more, view pets waiting to meet you, or to make a donation visit www.humanebroward.com or call 954-989-3977 ext. 6. Calling all BIG Dog Lovers Linda wants to go home with you. At 113 pounds, Linda is the largest dog at the Humane Society of Broward County and might be part Saint Bernard. Her previous owner moved and could not take her along and Linda is definitely missing them. She is anxious when she goes outside as if she is looking for her former family. Linda will need a patient new family who will give her time to adjust and settle in. This five-year-old beauty is described as a big gentle giant, who needs durable toys and a proper walking harness. She doesn’t know her own strength and does pull a bit when she goes for walks. Linda loves the coolness of a cold tile floor and will do best in a home with older kids. Do you have room in your heart and home for her? Little Cinderella (ID 656478) is just 12 weeks old and looking for a family to make her fairytale ending complete. This sweet little one is just one of more than three dozen kittens available for adoption at the shelter. This time of years adoption centers all over the country are inundated with kittens, so if you’ve thought about adopting now is the perfect opportunity. To meet a pet at the Humane Society of Broward County please fill out a pre-adoption application at www.humanebroward.com (unless you have in the past) and stop by. The shelter is located at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale and opens daily at 11 AM. If you have any questions call 954-989-3977 ext. 6. All pets are spayed or neutered before going home, receive a microchip and preliminary vaccinations, a bag of Purina ONE pet food, 14 days of limited health care from VCA Animal Hospitals, cats are tested for feline leukemia and dogs 7 months and older are tested for heartworm. < Previous News Next News >
