Organized and led by the energetic youth leaders of Maccabi Tzair, this annual event has become a staple for families looking to blend learning with fun. General Admission is just $36 per person and $18 for Chanich | Madrich, it’s also an event with heart: proceeds go directly toward supporting Maccabi Tzair’s vibrant youth programming. Whether you're a seasoned challah baker or have never braided a loaf in your life, everyone is welcome. Participants of all ages will be guided through the step-by-step process of making their very own challah — from mixing and kneading to braiding and blessing. All ingredients are provided, and everyone goes home with their very own dough to bake and enjoy. But this night is about much more than bread. “We wanted to create something where families could bond over something meaningful,” explains one of the organizers helping coordinate the event. “Challah is such a beautiful symbol of Shabbat and Jewish life. To bring people together around that — it’s powerful.” Adding to the experience is an infusion of Jewish learning, where participants will get a taste of the traditions and stories behind challah, from its biblical roots to modern rituals. “Miya’s Law”: In Honor of Charles W. Flanagan High School Graduate, Miya Marcano July 7, 2022 Share College student Miya Marcano had been missing for over a week last year when her body was found not far from her home. She was last seen at the Arden Villas Apartment Complex in Orlando, where she lived. Miya was allegedly murdered by a man who worked in her apartment building. Nearly six months after the passing of the young college student, whose death shocked the Community, Florida Legislators passed a Bill Mandating Stronger Protections for Tenants and Landlord Responsibilities. The Law was sponsored by Representative Robin Bartleman (D-Weston) and Senator Linda Stewart (D-Orlando), and signed into Law last week by the Governor. The new Law is named in honor of Miya Marcano, a Graduate of Charles W. Flanagan High School in Pembroke Pines who was allegedly killed by a Maintenance Worker who used his Master Key to enter her Apartment. Miya was attending Valencia College in Orlando when it is believed she was murdered by Armando Caballero, a Maintenance Worker at the Arden Villas Apartment Complex where she lived and had access to her Apartment. Caballero had expressed a romantic interest in Marcano but she rebuffed his advances. Caballero possessed a Key Fob to access Apartments and his was used at Marcano's Unit just before her disappearance, Authorities said. During this time period, the suspect Armando Caballero was found dead of an apparent suicide. That happened the same day deputies in neighboring Orange County announced he had expressed romantic interest toward his co-worker Miya Marcano, 19 and he snuck into her apartment shortly before she went missing. What is Miya’s Law? The Law makes changes to Florida’s Residential Landlord and Tenant Act as well as Public Lodging Establishment Laws in an effort to provide Safety and Security to Apartment Tenants. “Today is the day we have all been waiting for. I’d like to thank the Governor for his approval of this very important Bill, but I would also like to thank the many Stakeholders and the Group of Bi-Partisan Supporters who all worked countless hours to get this Bill to where we are today,” said Stewart. “As a mother of a college student, the loss of Miya is incomprehensible,” said Representative Bartleman. “I am grateful for Miya’s mother and father’s courage and strength. In the wake of their personal tragedy, they were committed to ensuring that this never happens to another family. Although this Legislation will not bring Miya back, it will help save lives and bring a greater sense of security to college students moving into their first Apartment, Seniors residing in Apartment Communities and all the 2 Million Renters in Florida. I am also grateful for my colleagues in the House who worked with me to ensure the unanimous passage of this Bill, Senator Stewart, Representative Plakon and to Governor DeSantis, for signing this Common-Sense Legislation into Law.” “While Miya’s family will never receive justice and nothing can bring back their daughter, I do hope that with this new law going into effect, in honor of Miya, that some peace will be brought to the family in knowing that their daughter’s death was not in vain,” said Stewart. The Law directs Landlords of Apartments to require that all Employees undergo a Background Screening, reinforces Rules on an Employee’s or Landlord’s access to Individual Units, increases the Required Notice before entry of a Unit to 24 hours and requires Apartments to maintain a Key Log Monitoring the issuance and return of all keys granting access to each Unit. While the focus of the Law is for Tenant Safety, it includes a Provision Prohibiting Hourly Rentals of Public Lodging Establishments. The new Law is intended to protect Apartment Tenants from the kind of tragedy that befell young Miya Marcano last September. The bill also bans Motels from charging Hourly Room Rates with the goal of preventing Sex Trafficking. The Law also requires Student Apartments to keep a Two-Year Log on “the issuance and return of all keys for each dwelling Unit. The Log will also include: The name, date and time an Employee or Contractor went into and came out of a Unit. This Bi-Partisan Legislation endeavors to ensure an elevated expectancy of Residential Security and Personal Safety in Residential Properties in the State of Florida. “Miya’s Law” would require Apartment Owners to conduct Criminal Background Checks on Employees who could enter Apartments. It also would institute Rigorous Controls, including: Logs over Master Keys to Apartments. The Law also would require Apartment Employees to give Tenants at least 24 hours’ Notice before entering an Apartment, up from the Current Requirement of at least 12 hours. The Enforcement of Miya’s Law will increase the Safety and Protection of our most vulnerable population, including: Students, Children, Single Mothers, Senior Citizens, Tenant-Victims and over 2.8 Million Florida Residents Residing in Single or Multi-Unit Residential Properties. Residential Security and Personal Safety are undoubtedly among the very first lines of defense in the protection of Tenants Residing in Residential Communities. Safety and Security are Basic Human Rights and should be regarded as such. Aventura Brightline Station & New Office Building May 5, 2022 Share The Brightline Station in Aventura has a completion scheduled for Fall 2022. Recently plans have been submitted for Two Turnberry, a 14-story office building. In the photo you can see the proposed building and the pedestrian bridge across Biscayne Boulevard connecting the office building to the Aventura Brightline Station currently under construction Have you been stuck in traffic lately around the intersection just south of Ives Dairy Road and Dixie Highway? If so, start making changes to your route because it's going to last till October. Brightline is currently constructing new areas of their rail line to bring passengers from their Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach stops to Orlando and beyond. The team is hard at work to continue these exciting expansion plans and the Aventura Station connecting South Florida is in full swing. With expansion comes construction and traffic and West Dixie Highway is closed as part of those plans. Below are the details of road closures that will be affected. West Dixie Highway in northern Miami-Dade County (Aventura) is closed through October 2022 as Brightline continues work on the Aventura Station Project. That part of West Dixie Highway, south of the Aventura Mall is closed between Northeast 202nd Street and Northeast 195th Street continuing through October of this year. Brightline’s Aventura Station will be located across from the Aventura Mall. Here are the details to get your commute prepared for the road closures in Miami-Dade County, West Dixie Highway between Northeast 202nd Street and Northeast 195th Street. Construction crews will have a full road closure through October 2022. The detour around the closure is as follows: • Southbound West Dixie Highway traffic will be directed to travel west on Northeast 206th Street or Northeast 202nd Street and turn south on Northeast 26th Avenue which joins with West Dixie Highway south of Northeast 193rd Street. • Northbound West Dixie Highway traffic will be directed to continue north on Northeast 26th Avenue and travel east on Northeast 202nd Street to access West Dixie Highway. In January of 1990, the property was purchased by the City of Hollywood to become the new home of the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood, which was previously located in a building on Hollywood Beach. The Mansion was renovated with Private and Historical Grant monies and was lovingly restored to its former glory, reopening its doors to the public on February 2nd, 1992. Today, the Center stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Kagey Home, weaving together elements of the past with a forward-thinking approach to arts education and community outreach. Aventura Forges Historic Bond: Sister City Agreement With Modi'in Seals Friendship & Commitment June 20, 2024 Share The City of Aventura has established its first-ever sister city agreement with Modi’in, a residential municipality in Israel located between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Haim Bibas, the Mayor of Modi’in, attended to accept the proclamation and a Magen David Adom ambulance Aventura is donating to his city. The ancient city of Modi'in in was known as the hometown of the Hasmoneans – the place where the Hasmonean Revolt took place and where Judah the Maccabi and his brothers were buried. The history of the Hasmonean serves as a historical example of the heroism of the Jewish people for generations. The modern city of Modi'in was built near the findings of ancient Modi'in. The first residents brought with them their pioneering spirit and community involvement which resonates throughout the city even today. The establishment of Modi'in, a large new city in the center of the country was granted, in part, for the strategic need to create an urban continuity from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and to meet the needs of the housing shortage in the center of the country. The city provides a solution for people who wish to live in the center but without the hustle and bustle of a big city while enjoying plentiful landscapes, clean air and nature. The city is composed of a young diverse population who chose this new city with all its unique advantages in which to live and to raise their children. Modi'in, the country's first planned city is spread over 55,000 dunams – half comprises developed areas and the other half green areas. The city was planned in two phases: the first phase will house approximately 125,000 residents and the second will house close to a quarter of a million residents. Modi'in was designed to benefit from the natural terrain spreading over the hills and valleys. The roads were laid out to outline the valleys and green public areas. Modi'in is known for its comfortable temperatures, being 300 meters above sea level, is open to the north-west breeze and has low humidity. The city is divided into four main zones: residential areas, main business centers, a light industrial zone and a technology park. Each zone is surrounded by green areas. The planning of the city distinguishes between residential areas, industrial zones and commercial areas in order to ensure quality of life for residents. MDA represents the best of Israel – Jews, Muslims, Christians, Druze – working together to save lives. Each EMS team member, including call takers and dispatchers, is trained as a medical professional and is able to respond to medical emergencies. MDA operates a fleet of over 1,500 ambulances and mobile intensive care units, hundreds of first-aid motorcycles, helicopters, ATVs, ambulance-boats, and dozens of mobile blood collection vehicles.
