There’s A Special Kind Of Magic That Happens When Flour, Water, And Tradition Come Together — And This Spring, That Magic Is Happening In The Heart Of The David Posnack JCC’s Bass Lobby. Mark Your Calendars And Warm Your Ovens: The 2025 Maccabi Tzair Challah Bake Is Set To Be An Evening Filled With Dough, Dancing, And Deep Connection To Jewish Culture.

Set for an evening in April, the Challah Bake is more than just a culinary experience — it’s a celebration of family, heritage, and community, all rolled into one. Organized and led by the energetic youth leaders of Maccabi Tzair, this annual event has become a staple for families looking to blend learning with fun. General Admission is just $36 per person and $18 for Chanich | Madrich, it’s also an event with heart: proceeds go directly toward supporting Maccabi Tzair’s vibrant youth programming.

Whether you're a seasoned challah baker or have never braided a loaf in your life, everyone is welcome. Participants of all ages will be guided through the step-by-step process of making their very own challah — from mixing and kneading to braiding and blessing. All ingredients are provided, and everyone goes home with their very own dough to bake and enjoy.

But this night is about much more than bread.

“We wanted to create something where families could bond over something meaningful,” explains one of the organizers helping coordinate the event. “Challah is such a beautiful symbol of Shabbat and Jewish life. To bring people together around that — it’s powerful.”

Adding to the experience is an infusion of Jewish learning, where participants will get a taste of the traditions and stories behind challah, from its biblical roots to modern rituals. The bake is paired with Rikudim — lively, communal Israeli dancing — turning the evening into a full-body celebration of culture and community.

Designed with families in mind, the event offers a chance for parents and children to connect not only with each other but with others in the community. In fact, organizers strongly encourage families to sign up together, noting that children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

And while the evening is fun for all, it also provides a unique opportunity for youth leaders to step into the spotlight.

Hoping to bring even more people into the fold, there’s a special perk: refer five participants and attend for free. All attendees have to do is list your name as their referral when they sign up — a small gesture that builds big connections. Simply ask them to name you as a referral on the form.

Spaces are limited, so early registration is encouraged. With past events drawing strong attendance and enthusiastic reviews, this year’s Challah Bake promises to be even more memorable.

So whether you come for the tradition, the dancing, or just the chance to make the fluffiest, golden-brown challah of your life, the 2025 Challah Bake Presented by Maccabi Tzair is ready to welcome you with open arms — and floured hands.
