It’s worth noting that Casa Velas actually has Bustamante’s sculptures in the majority of the suites, allowing most guests to enjoy the captivatingly authentic artwork. Amidst its Spanish-style architecture and captivating interior design, the resort is ensconced in a lush garden setting on the 18-hole Marina Vallarta Golf Course. The tropical landscaping and abundant flora and fauna woven throughout the entirety of the hotel create a breathtaking setting, attracting wildlife—including Koi Ponds and "Pet" Snapping Turtles. For golf enthusiasts, Casa Velas guests receive special access and discounts at Marina Vallarta and Vista Vallarta Golf Clubs. The on-site, AAA Four Diamond Emiliano restaurant offers guests unlimited access to gourmet cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The intimate, romantic indoor/outdoor dining space provides lovely vistas of the pool and vibrant golf course beyond. Each evening, Emiliano features a five-course gourmet tasting menu created and overseen by head chefs from its sister resort, the AAA Five Diamond Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit. A novel offering is the resort’s “Taco Therapy” — Casa Velas’ latest food and beverage offering for guests assisting in Anxiety and Stress Relief, improving sleep quality and boosting Antioxidants. The new tasting experience features four curated Tacos that provide holistic benefits for the mind, body and soul. There are an array of other activities at the resort as well. “Workshops range from arts and crafts such as natural Jewelry and Abanicos, to culinary workshops such as the Molcajete option, where guests explore Mexican culinary traditions,” said Enrique Sinencio, the resort’s General Manager. “Another activity is DIY Botanical Cocktails, where guests can pick their ingredients for their drink at the onsite garden. Perfect for creative beverage concoctions, the garden features Rosemary, Lavender, Mint, Basil, Lemongrass, Peppermint, a Mexican Tea called Epazote, Aloe Vera, Sage, Nopales Cactus Pads, Thyme, Tamarind, Jackfruit, Mango, Guava and more. Our mixologist will use the selected ingredients to make a personalized botanical cocktail to enjoy on the Koi Pond-dotted terrace. Varieties of fruits, herbs, vegetables and botanicals are also used in the cuisine and spa treatments at Casa Velas.” For the health conscious, a spa food menu is available as well. Casa Velas’ commitment to excellence extends to its impressive on-site Organic Botanical Garden, where the resort grows its own herbs, flowers and vegetables. These fresh ingredients find their way into cocktails and culinary creations, adding a farm-to-table element to the dining experience. The beverage offerings at Emiliano, and throughout the entirety of Casa Velas, are equally impressive, featuring Premium Domestic and International Premium Wines and Liquors. Also enjoyable are spirit-induced nightly events like Wine Pairings and Beer, Tequila, Wine, Martini and other F&B tastings that foster socialization among guests. Relative to in-suite victuals, the resort's in-suite Mini Bars also depart from the ordinary by offering healthy, freshly-made options on-demand. This includes two different selections of Crudités—a “Mexican Turnip” with a combination of Carrots, Cucumber and Jicama; and another including: Celery, Beetroot and Pineapple. These come complete with three different choices of dressing: Mango, Chipotle or Basil, to enhance flavor while keeping the snack light and healthy. Guests can also choose from a menu of freshly made juice options available year-round. Speaking of health, also included in the daily rate for all-inclusive Casa Velas guests is access to its fully equipped gym. A visit to the property also would not be complete without experiencing services at its on-site ABJA Spa. The 6,500 square foot sanctuary offers a wide variety of massages, body wraps and facials, a hydrotherapy area, spa boutique and beauty salon. Notably, Casa Velas is just as committed to the environment as it is to providing impressive guest experiences. “Our luxury resort’s environmental responsibility is a driving force behind the entire operation, from conservation efforts and Recycling, to planting our own herb garden,” Sinencio notes. “From natural composting and fertilizing of our on-site gardens, to Water-Saving Initiatives, Solar Heating and meticulous separation and processing of all Waste and Recyclables, Casa Velas sets the benchmark for Green Tourism and hospitality in Puerto Vallarta and beyond. We also Recycle burned Cooking Oils to a supplier for conversion to Biodegradable Fuel. Local companies are in charge of processing glass, plastic, metal, cardboard and toxic material to handle their Recycling, and proper disposal.” “In addition, we clean the sand daily of any foreign debris,” Sinencio continued. “Teams of more than 30 employees are organized monthly to thoroughly clean, sweep, dig and sift the sand for extra cleaning. Designated containers are strategically located for the Recycling Garbage around the property. Since the COVID-19 Pandemic, Casa Velas has implemented rigorous health and safety protocols in accordance with local and international guidelines. • Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Offers New Hope For Veterans | sun-times

Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Offers New Hope For Veterans By Family Features Jan 1, 2026 For Generations, America's Veterans Have Borne Not Only The Visible Scars Of Battle But Also The Hidden Wounds Of War. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Depression, Traumatic Brain Injury And Anxiety Have Long Haunted Those Who Served, Often With Devastating Effects On Their Quality Of Life And Their Families. While Traditional Treatments Have Helped, Many Veterans Continue To Suffer In Silence - Left Behind By A System Struggling To Meet Their Needs. However, science is now reopening doors once closed, and therapies previously dismissed are being reconsidered with fresh eyes. Among them are psychedelic-assisted treatments, which have revealed potential in clinical trials to address the most severe Mental Health conditions afflicting Veterans. The FDA's Role Currently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved only one psychedelic-based medication: a Ketamine nasal spray to treat depression. However, other compounds are gaining the attention of researchers, clinicians and Veterans alike. Psilocybin - the active ingredient in "magic mushrooms" - and a drug similar to LSD have both earned FDA "breakthrough therapy" status for their potential to ease depression and anxiety, sometimes after only a single dose. In 2017, MDMA-assisted therapy was identified as a potential breakthrough treatment option for PTSD; ultimately, the FDA declined to grant full approval. This setback underscored not a failure of science, but the complexity of studying powerful compounds under existing regulatory frameworks. For Veterans, it was a disappointment, yet it also spotlighted the urgent need for continued research and funding. Veterans and Research at the Forefront One compound has captured national attention: Ibogaine, a psychedelic root traditionally used in ceremonies in central and west Africa. Early studies with special-operations Veterans have found improvements in PTSD, depression, anxiety and overall functioning - especially for those living with the effects of traumatic brain injury. Recognizing this potential, DAV (Disabled American Veterans) is championing these new approaches. At its 2025 National Convention, the organization hosted a groundbreaking psychedelics roundtable that brought together researchers, Veterans, advocates and even a former NFL player to discuss the potential of psychedelic-assisted therapies. The century-old organization supports research into these treatments, pointing out that traditional therapies can fail for as many as 60% of those who try them. It's also advocating for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to make psychedelic treatments available once they receive FDA approval. "We are experiencing a watershed moment in medical research as psychedelic-assisted therapies have revealed true potential in clinical trials to treat Severe Mental Health conditions," said Barry Jesinoski, DAV's National Adjutant. "This glimmer offers veterans contending with not only PTSD but depression, traumatic brain injury, anxiety and more hope in a world where the status quo is failing them." A New Mission The promising results of these treatments spurred some states to commit funding toward research into psychedelic therapies or conduct legislative hearings to explore their role in advancing this science. The VA is now conducting studies on MDMA and Psilocybin. While more research is needed to fully understand their risks, benefits and best applications, for DAV, psychedelic medication represents both hope and responsibility. By advocating for rigorous research and ensuring veterans' perspectives are central to the conversation, the organization is working to accelerate progress while safeguarding integrity. Whether through psilocybin, MDMA, Ibogaine or future discoveries, the mission is clear: fund the research, pursue the science and ensure America's veterans are given every chance to heal. Something For Everyone: Aventura Arts & Cultural Center Has A Busy November September 20, 2024 Share Whether you love dance, drama, music or comedy, this November is one to remember at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. On Friday, November 1st at 8:00 p.m. the New World School of the Arts presents its annual performance featuring the outstanding New World Dance Ensemble @ Aventura in a dynamic program of the work of today's most interesting and evocative choreographers. Miami’s New World School of the Arts Dance Program is conservatory-based, grounded in classical ballet and incorporating dances of different cultures and newer forms. FL.Flamencos Featuring Ser.Rana performs Saturday, November 2nd at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 3rd at 2:00 p.m. in a show presented by the City of Aventura in partnership with FUNDarte and the Miami-Dade County Auditorium. Dancer, choreographer and actress Sonia Franco Gutiérrez created the choreography and provided dance direction for this experience that transforms movement and releases the desire to dance. With original flamenco music, Ser.Rana connects directly with the audience through a minimalist aesthetic. Like water that cannot be contained and like the flow of a river inside them, the dancers do not cease until their bodies are transformed through Flamenco. This event is produced by Spain Flamenco Arts (formerly Casa Patas) and is part of FUNDarte's annual FL.Flamencos series and Miami-Dade County Auditorium’s Away From Home Series. On Saturday, November 9th at 8:00 p.m., the City of Aventura in partnership with YI Love Jewish presents Anne Being Frank, a new play by Ron Elisha. Performed Off-Broadway to rave reviews, this one-woman show starring Alexis Fishman is a total reimagining of the story of Anne Frank. The play takes place within three worlds: Anne and her family's secret annex hiding place, the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp where Anne died and an imagined world where Anne survives WWII to go over the manuscript of her diary with her editor at a publishing house in Manhattan. This play poses the question: "Had Anne known precisely what was in store for her and her family at the hands of the Nazis, would she still have written, ‘In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart’!” This event contains adult language or content. In Rogers, Richie & Robinson: The Tribute on Sunday, November 10th at 2:00 p.m., The Undercovers present the songs of Kenny Rogers, Lionel Richie and Smokey Robinson reimagined with three award winning vocalists. Luke Mcmaster, Kevin Pauls and Joel Parisien take audiences on a trip down memory lane as they perform timeless songs that have become the soundtrack of our lives including classics like "The Gambler," "Hello" and "Ooh Baby Baby," the latter being a fresh version emphatically endorsed by Robinson himself. During the show, they share stories about the songs, the legends and the surprising connection between them while delivering these classic hits with astonishing harmonies. On Sunday, November 17th at 5:00 p.m., Miami International Piano Festival presents Josu De Solaun, the only Spanish pianist to win first prizes at the José Iturbi (2006) and George Enescu (2014) international piano competitions since their receptive inceptions in 1980 and 1958. He's a two-time awardee of the prestigious International Classical Music Awards for chamber music (2021) and best soloist (2023), with the jury for the latter award noting, "Josu de Solaun is one of the most impressive discoveries of the past decade. Not only is he a technically impressive pianist, but his interpretative imagination also knows no limits." In August 2023, he recorded Prokofiev's Concerto No. 2 and Rachmaninov's Concerto No. 3. Additional critical acclaim includes recognition from Nikolaus Frey (Fuldaer Zeitung) for his "poetic sense of sound, bold artistic vision, and brilliant virtuoso skills, always and totally at the service of the works he performs." Not suggested for children under 12 years of age. On Friday, November 22nd at 8:00 p.m., the City of Aventura presents Judy Gold and her brutally honest, fearless and no-holds-barred sense of humor as part of the Aventura Stand-Up Comedy Series. • How Women Experience Heart Disease Differently | sun-times

How Women Experience Heart Disease Differently By Family Features Jul 3, 2025 Most People Think Of Heart Attacks As Debilitating Pain In The Chest. However, That's Not Always The Case, Especially For Women, And Missing The Signs Can Be A Matter Of Life And Death. Although Heart Disease is the leading cause of death among American women, according to the American Heart Association, symptoms are often overlooked or explained away as less worrisome conditions. "Men and women experience many aspects of life differently, and Heart Disease is no exception," said LeAnne Bloedon, MS, RD, Vice President of Clinical Development, Esperion Therapeutics. "Symptoms of a Heart Attack aren't as obvious as many women think, and failing to recognize the danger and get help can have catastrophic results." One Heart Disease Risk factor, for example, is High LDL Cholesterol. Often referred to as a "silent killer," it doesn't always present noticeable symptoms. In fact, data suggests women with High LDL Cholesterol are not diagnosed or treated as early or aggressively as men, which can put women at an increased risk for Cardiovascular Events. Understanding how men's and women's risk and symptoms differ may help identify and treat a serious heart health problem before it causes lasting damage. Anatomy Differences Some differences between men and women are present in the body's internal systems, including the Cardiovascular System. Women generally have smaller hearts and narrower blood vessels. This can affect heart health in numerous ways, including less efficient stress responses and greater risk of widespread Plaque buildup, especially in smaller vessels, called Microvasculature, which can pose treatment challenges. Cholesterol Buildup Hormones influence aspects of the body's function, including Cholesterol Levels. Estrogen, a female sex hormone, raises HDL (Good) Cholesterol Levels. This may be why women tend to have more HDL Cholesterol and Lower LDL (Bad) Cholesterol than men, especially before they reach Menopause, though inherited High Cholesterol can affect women of all ages. "It's critical to raise awareness about the importance of measuring LDL Cholesterol, diagnosing High Cholesterol and treating elevated LDL Cholesterol per guidelines and individual patient needs," Bloedon said. Risk Factors While there are shared risk factors for Heart Disease among men and women (such as Obesity, High Blood Pressure and Diabetes), some risk factors disproportionately affect women. For example, uncontrolled Cholesterol in women, particularly after Menopause, can increase the risk of Heart Disease and Stroke. Care and Treatment "While you may not be able to fully prevent Heart Disease, you can understand the risks and take proactive steps," Bloedon said. "Commit to a healthy, smoke-free lifestyle. Exercise regularly and eat a well-balanced diet with limits on Processed Foods, Sugar, Sodium and alcohol. Take any medications as directed by your healthcare provider." Statins, which reduce the production of Cholesterol in the Liver and Lower Cholesterol Levels in the bloodstream, are the medications most often prescribed to help manage High LDL Cholesterol. While generally well-tolerated, Statin Intolerance (the inability to take a Statin at any dose or the recommended dose) does occur in some patients and is more common in women. Talk with your doctor about other steps you can take to manage elevated LDL Cholesterol levels and learn more about women's heart health at: www.goredforwomen.org . Symptoms of Heart Attacks in Women Women's experiences with Heart Disease may be quite different from men. For example, according to the Heart Disease Foundation, women are likely to be older when they experience a Heart Attack. They may also attribute symptoms to other conditions, such as Diabetes or Arthritis. Further complicating matters, several diseases mimic Heart Attacks so getting to the root of the problem can be tricky. Women are more apt than men to experience a Coronary Spasm, Coronary Dissection or Broken Heart Syndrome. What to Watch For: • Like men, women experiencing a Heart Attack may notice prolonged or recurrent chest pain or pressure. • In women, that pain may extend to the arms, back, neck, jaw and stomach. • Some women experience shortness of breath with no chest pain at all. • Other symptoms women are more likely to report can be easily mistaken for other conditions. Some of these signs include unexplained fatigue, disruptions to normal sleep patterns, lightheadedness, nausea and cold sweats. (Photo courtesy of Shutterstock) Previous Next
