Jewish Museum Of Florida Jewish Connection News May 2, 2025 The Jewish Museum Of Florida-FIU (JMOF-FIU) Established In 1995, Is The Only Museum Dedicated To Telling The Story Of More Than 250 Years Of Florida Jewish History, Arts And Culture, With A Growing Collection Of More Than 100,000 Items. It Is Located In The Trendy SoFlo Area Of South Beach At 301 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, Florida 33139. The Museum Is Housed In Two Restored Historic Buildings That Were Once Synagogues For Miami Beach's First Jewish Congregation. The original synagogue was built in 1929, and the second, built in 1936, was designed by Art Deco Architect Henry Hohauser and features 80 stained-glass windows, a copper dome, and a marble bimah. The two buildings are joined together by the Bess Myerson Gallery, named after former Miss America, Bess Myerson. While reflective of the Jewish experience in Florida, JMOF-FIU creates understanding of the shared immigrant experience in our multicultural society. The Museum's core exhibition, MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida 1763 to today, originated by Marcia Jo Zerivitz, began as a statewide grassroots collecting effort, which included gathering photographs, artifacts and oral histories from descendants of pioneer families, as well as the state's more recent arrivals. Mosaic traveled to 13 Florida cities from 1990-1994 and generated so much interest that by 1995, it evolved into the Jewish Museum of Florida. JMOF became part of FIU in 2012, creating a historic partnership that leverages the resources of the Museum and FIU to ignite a new era of interdisciplinary education and research. Using the lens of the evolving immigration experience of Jews in Florida, JMOF-FIU serves as a forum to promote tolerance, further global understanding and create connections to Jewish culture, history, arts and contemporary civic life for diverse audiences. Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, JMOF-FIU has achieved a standard of excellence in its methodology for research, collecting, conservation, archiving, storing and interpreting its holdings. JMOF-FIU presents a vibrant schedule of thought-provoking exhibitions that change periodically, paired with a dynamic array of programming including: lectures, workshops, family activities, and presentations on topics of Jewish studies worldwide, with international scholars and presenters and local movers and shakers. Many of the programs are in collaboration with FIU departments including the Green School of International and Public Affairs, as well as various cultural and community organizations. The Museum's extensive collection of artifacts, documents, photographs and oral histories focuses on the people who have shaped and continue to influence the development of our state, drawing crucial links between their contributions and the social, political, economic, cultural and religious aspects of Jewish life in Florida and the relationship of Jews to the dominant non-Jewish population. As such, the collection offers a wealth of opportunity for research by students, scholars, historians and journalists. JMOF-FIU is also an extended classroom for thousands of Miami-Dade County Public School students, inspiring them to explore their own cultural heritage and those of all ethnic groups in our multicultural society. • 9 Steps For A Lifetime Of Heart-Healthy Eating | sun-times

9 Steps For A Lifetime Of Heart-Healthy Eating By Feature Impact Jun 18, 2026 More Than Half Of Adults And About 60% Of Children In The United States Have Unhealthy Diets, Which Can Contribute To Higher Rates Of Health Factors Such As High Blood Pressure And Obesity, And Lead Directly To Poor Health Outcomes Including Death From Chronic Conditions Such As Cardiovascular Disease. These findings come from the American Heart Association, a global force changing the future of health for all, which published its "2026 Dietary Guidance to Improve Cardiovascular Health" in its peer-reviewed, flagship journal "Circulation" recommending Americans follow a lifelong healthy eating pattern that may reduce Cardiovascular Disease Risk and improve quality of life based on the latest in evidence-based science. The statement outlines nine key features of a heart-healthy dietary pattern: 1. Adjust energy intake and expenditure to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight: Try to balance how much you eat with how active you are to reach and maintain a healthy body weight. 2. Eat a variety of vegetables and fruits: Include different colors, textures and types of produce. Remember, even canned and frozen can be nutritious and affordable. 3. Choose foods made mostly with whole grains: Foods such as: whole wheat bread, brown rice and oatmeal are typically better choices than refined grains including white bread or rice. 4. Choose healthy sources of protein: Shift from meat to plant-based sources such as legumes, including beans, peas and lentils, along with nuts and seeds; regularly consume fish and seafood; select low-fat or fat-free dairy products; and, if red meat is desired, choose lean cuts, avoid processed forms and limit portion size. 5. Choose sources of Unsaturated Fats: Replace Saturated Fats with healthy UnSaturated Fats, including those from nuts, seeds, avocados and nontropical plant oils. 6. Choose minimally processed foods: Go with foods close to their natural state, with minimal added commercial ingredients, rather than those that are highly processed with additives. 7. Minimize intake of added sugars: Limit the sugar-sweetened beverages you drink and the foods with added sugar you eat. 8. Choose foods low in sodium and prepare foods with minimal or no salt: Be aware of hidden sources of sodium in prepared and packaged foods, and season food with healthier options such as herbs, spices or lemon instead of salt. 9. If alcohol is not consumed, do not start; if alcohol is consumed, limit intake: Alcohol can increase your risk for High Blood Pressure and other health conditions, so if you don't drink, don't start. "For healthy eating to be more attainable and sustainable, we recommend people focus on their overall eating pattern rather than specific nutrients or foods," said Alice H. Lichtenstein, D.Sc., FAHA, Volunteer Chair of the Scientific Statement Writing Committee and Senior Scientist and Leader of the Diet and Chronic Disease Prevention Directive at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University. "Every time you choose to make a swap for a healthier alternative, you're making a step toward a healthier life." While the updated guidance is specifically designed to improve Cardiovascular Health, it's generally consistent with dietary recommendations for other conditions like Type 2 Diabetes, Kidney Disease, some Cancers and brain health as well due to shared risk factors, including High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, High Blood Sugar, excess weight and reduced kidney function. "A healthy dietary pattern can support lifelong health and well-being beyond Cardiovascular Health," Lichtenstein said. • Prepare For King Tides | sun-times

Prepare For King Tides City of Hollywood Sep 17, 2025 Unusually high tides, also called King Tides, are expected periodically through early December. These seasonal high tides occur when the moon’s proximity to Earth causes tides to rise higher than normal. Combined with rising sea levels and stormy weather, King Tides can significantly increase the risk of flooding, especially in low-lying areas. Rainfall, wind direction, and wind speed can all affect how high the tides come in, sometimes pushing water levels higher than predicted. With seven miles of shoreline, nearly eight miles of canals and a flat topography, Hollywood is particularly vulnerable to sea level rise and tidal flooding. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), above-average high tides are expected on the following dates: September 6–12 (Full Moon) September 19–25 (New Moon) October 3–25 (Full and New Moon) November 1–10 (Full Moon) November 18–20 (New Moon) December 2–7 (Full Moon) High seasonal tides can flood coastal roads, parking lots and docks. Motorists should use caution, avoid driving through flooded streets and plan alternate routes when possible. During peak high tides, water levels may rise more than two and a half feet. The City of Hollywood is actively working on both short- and long-term solutions to minimize the impacts of tidal flooding. Flap gates have been installed in the stormwater system to block tidal water from flowing back through drains. Auxiliary pumps are also stationed in high-risk areas to help clear flooded streets as quickly as possible. Make a Difference in Your Neighborhood Heavy rainstorms and King Tides increase the chance of localized flooding. City crews work hard to maintain more than 157 miles of stormwater piping and nearly 4,900 catch basins, but residents can help too. By adopting a catch basin in your neighborhood, you can help keep debris out of the storm system and reduce flooding. Participation is simple: sign up to adopt, inspect the basin at least once a month, clean it as needed and submit proof of your efforts. You can even earn rewards for helping to prevent flooding and waterway pollution. Sign up today at: www.hollywoodfl.org/adoptacatchbasin - You can also help by placing coconuts in your garbage cart for collection and disposing of lawn clippings and yard waste properly to keep them from entering storm drains. For catch basin issues in the City of Hollywood, call the Underground Utilities Division at: (954) 921-3046. • A Nutraceutical Nirvana: How Nature Heals Quicker And Better Than Traditional Drugs | sun-times

A Nutraceutical Nirvana: How Nature Heals Quicker And Better Than Traditional Drugs South Florida Sun Times Mar 13, 2025 Even while growing up in the 1950’s, Dr. Peter Amato understood the healing power of natural medicine, having watched his father who suffered from Chronic Heart Fatigue add decades to his life by eating healthy, taking supplements and fasting with juices. Now, a Board-Certified Doctor of Natural Medicine and Founder of Inner Harmony Wellness Centers, Dr. Amato is finally realizing the fruits of his labor as the nutraceutical industry topped $418.2 Billion last year alone and is projected to be a $571.3 Billion business by 2029. He has seen firsthand how natural remedies can cure all types of modern-day diseases faster, more effectively and affordably than traditional synthetic medications, and discusses the top five diseases that nutraceuticals treat for March National Nutrition Month. “Although nutraceuticals have been around for 36 years, the timing has never been better for these natural compounds to skyrocket,” said Peter Amato, Ph.D., DNM, Founder of Inner Harmony Wellness Centers. “This is due to the growing demand for functional foods and dietary supplements to remediate specific diseases, coupled with rising healthcare costs and a population that is living longer. Simply stated, consumers are increasingly turning to nutraceuticals as a powerful way to enhance their overall mental and physical well-being throughout their entire aging process." Dr. Amato explains that nutraceuticals, a hybrid of “nutrition” and “pharmaceutics,” are bioactive compounds derived from natural foods and plants whose ingredients work synergistically to support specific health needs. As such, they have more medicinal appeal, offering a broad range of health benefits including disease prevention and enhanced performance. They can include fortified foods, dietary supplements, herbal products, and functional beverages and come in liquid, powder, gummy or capsule form. “Nutraceuticals provide a natural way to both prevent and remediate chronic diseases,” adds Dr. Amato. “Unlike pharmaceuticals that oftentimes only alleviate the symptoms of sickness, nutraceuticals offer preventive benefits without the side effects associated with synthetic drugs and actually resolve the problem at the cellular root level.” Dr. Amato explains that in his 29 years of practicing functional medicine, he has witnessed patients recover from such debilitating health conditions as allergies, Alzheimer’s Disease, Cardiovascular Disease, Cancer, Diabetes, Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Obesity, Immune Disorders, Chronic Inflammation and Parkinson’s Disease among many others, by incorporating natural foods, minerals and supplements into their diet. He offers the following list of natural alternatives to the top five diseases: Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) - includes Heart Attack, Peripheral Vascular Diseases, Stroke, Hypertension and Heart Failure. Studies indicate that a low intake of vegetables and fruits is associated with a high mortality in CVD. Thus, nutraceuticals in the form of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, dietary fibers and omega‑3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are recommended for prevention and treatment of this condition. Polyphenols and flavonoids found in onions, endives, broccoli, cauliflower, grapefruits, apples, cherries, pomegranates, berries and black grapes, alter cellular metabolism, which helps to cure CVD. Cancer - has emerged as a major public health problem in most developing countries, but a healthy diet and lifestyle can help prevent it. Carotenoids are a group of phytochemicals responsible for different colors of foods that have antioxidant activities and are effective on cancer prevention. Lycopene is one of the major carotenoids and is found exclusively in tomatoes, guava, pink grapefruit, watermelon and papaya. Similarly, plants rich in daidzein, biochanin, isoflavones and genistein, also inhibit prostate cancer cell growth. Finally, beta-carotene found in yellow, orange, and green leafy vegetables and fruits such as tomatoes, lettuce, oranges, sweet potatoes, broccoli, cantaloupe, carrots, spinach, and winter squash also has anticancer activity. Diabetes - In recent years, a wide range of herbal dietary supplements and herbal medicines have scientifically proven to benefit Type 2 Diabetes, the most common form of the disease. Soy isoflavones have been associated with a lower incidence and mortality rate, omega‑3 fatty acids help reduce glucose tolerance and lipoic acid is an antioxidant that can heal diabetic neuropathy. Alzheimer’s Disease - is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by oxidative stress. Nutraceutical antioxidants such as curcumin, lutein, lycopene, turmeric and beta carotene help combat oxidative stress and are found in both foods and supplements to stop the progression of this most popular form of Dementia. Immune System Disorders - Many nutraceuticals help boost immune function. They include extracts from coneflowers, echinacea, astragalus and probiotics. Besides preventing and relieving diseases, Dr. Amato notes that nutraceuticals can also detoxify a person’s body from excessive use and overuse of antibiotic medications and other chemical-based drugs that have accumulated in the liver and kidneys over the years. While nutraceuticals can be found in health stores, pharmacies, supermarkets and online, Dr. Amato cautions that not all nutraceuticals are created equally and encourages consumers to carefully review label ingredients and conduct research on a brand before using it. He recommends using top-quality, transparent companies like Premier Research Labs, which sustainably and carefully sources the best organic ingredients to manufacture them as 100% solvent and filler-free vegan-friendly capsules, while undergoing rigorous testing on each batch. Further, because nutraceuticals are unregulated by an official government agency, Dr. Amato recommends consulting with a Board-Certified natural practitioner to ensure their safety, efficacy and affordability. “As scientific research advances and the political environment changes, nutraceuticals will play an even more significant role in personalized health and wellness,” concludes Dr. Amato. “They are powerful instruments in preventing and improving acute and chronic diseases, thereby promoting optimal health, longevity and quality of life.” About Dr. Peter Amato Dr. Peter Amato is a Board-Certified Doctor of Natural Medicine and founder of Inner Harmony Wellness Centers. For nearly 30 years, he has been creating personalized wellness plans for patients of all ages resolving a wide range of chronic conditions and diseases through advanced modalities and targeted nutraceuticals. He is Co-Founder with Andrew Weil, M.D. and past chair of the National Integrative Medicine Council and formed the National Centers for Complementary and Alternative Medicine within the National Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C. Dr. Amato has served as a consultant for the American Cancer Society and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). He is a frequent guest lecturer at prestigious academic and healthcare institutions and has authored two books: Soul Silence: The Path of Awakening and The New Medicine: Moving Beyond Our Crisis of Perception, Dr. Amato offers holistic wellness seminars at the rural Inner Harmony Institute for Living helping participants overcome trauma, heal emotionally and physically and recover from addiction. • Improvements On The Horizon | sun-times

Improvements On The Horizon By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper Aug 13, 2025 Over The Past Three Years Our City Has Been Addressing All Our Underground Infrastructure. This Includes Water, Wastewater, Stormwater As Well As Major Lift Stations. These Projects, As I Have Written Before In The Past, Are Critical And Essential To Our Sustainability. They Are Also Very Disruptive And Create Inconveniences That Are Unavoidable. Over the past month, there have been multiple Boil Water Notices particularly in the northeast due to a Water Main Replacement. In these cases, they were unavoidable. Many cities simply turn the water off during construction. This practice leaves residents and businesses with no water during construction. When we can we do work at night. We also perform many of our water projects under low pressure. Our philosophy is we would rather have low pressure than no water available for our residents. The particular water breaks that we have been seeing are due to digging in areas where many lateral connections are over 50 years old. Once the dirt is disturbed the pipes can lose support and can crack. In the case of broken water pipes, we must perform boil water notices. To ensure water is safe to consume, two evaluated readings must come back clear before we can lift the notice. Our staff has been placing notices on Facebook, on our website and in some cases doing direct calling. Notifications have included maps of the specific areas that have been impacted. For example, some people thought all of the northeast was on a boil water notice when it was actually condominiums along East Hallandale Beach Boulevard and 14th Avenue. It is imperative that residents understand best and accurate information can be found directly on our website and our Social Media platforms. There is good news at least for this project, the northeast should be completed within the next month. In addition to the water project in the Northeast, we are replacing and upgrading over 15 Lift Stations. On Atlantic Shores, right before Diplomat, there is work being performed on the Lift Station which requires a road closure. This project is also expected to be finished within a month. I encourage everyone to sign up for our notifications. Residents can also visit our website where there is an interactive map that lists in detail all of our projects. On behalf of the City, I want to thank our residents and business partners for understanding that there will be inconveniences and disruptions. In other news, our City approved moving forward on contract negotiations for automated school zone speed detection. Many cities have started to implement this state authorized technology. Our Staff has been taking every initiative into researching this program before we decided to proceed. We actually did not directly piggyback on any of the existing contracts. We went out with our own Request for Proposals and ended up approving negotiations with a Jenoptik Company. The time and effort Police put into this program resulted in a much better agreement. Through the negotiations this contract will include not simply Hallandale Beach Boulevard and Pembroke Road, but all areas currently that are designated school zones. We also will be collaborating with them and the school district to expand school zones for some of our private school locations. The significant difference with our contract is the city will be paid up front for any infractions issued not just at the end of what is collected. All upfront costs of installation and equipment are being paid for by the company. The contract also includes a mobile unit that can be multi-purposed for enforcement, special notifications and an additional license plate reader unit. There will be a notification period of 30 days that will include signage, mailings, & Social Media notifications. The company pays all these costs. After the 30 days enforcement will begin. State law allows us to utilize this form of enforcement a half hour before school in one session and a half hour after. Our City, like others, is not choosing a simple time slot in the morning and in the afternoon. The system will be utilized from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drivers will receive a 100-dollar violation if they are traveling 10 miles over the 15-mile posted school zone time. During the day speeders will also receive infractions if they are going over 10 miles above the posted speed. There are no points associated with the ticket and information will not be accessible to insurance companies. This program is set up with a goal for safety for our students. It has been found to change driving behavior. As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place on my Phone/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or you can email me at: jcooper@cohb.org . Please visit me on my Facebook page at: Mayor Joy Cooper. Like! Follow! And Share! Previous Next

  • Sparkling Substitutes: 7 Champagne Swaps Worth Toasting | sun-times

Sparkling Substitutes: 7 Champagne Swaps Worth Toasting By Merilee Kern, MBA Jul 30, 2025 Champagne has long been the essential toast of holidays and other special occasions, but the landscape of sparkling wine is evolving. Today’s breed of bubbles offers an exciting range of choices from nearly every corner of the wine-producing world. Regions across the globe are proving they can stand shoulder to shoulder with the world-famous fizz, offering exciting alternatives for wine lovers ready to expand their horizons. And, as people's tastes shift, so do their preferences for flavor profiles, sweetness levels and production methods, there are more new styles to discover as alternatives to Champagne. “Champagne is often enjoyed for its multi-layered aromas of fruit and brioche, finishing with a searing and elegant acidity,” notes Peter Douglas, DipWSET, a vinicultural expert with the "VinoVoss" AI Sommelier smartphone app and web-based semantic wine search and recommendation system perfecting wine discovery. “Yet, not all sparkling wines meet these lofty criteria, and some remarkable options exist that may surprise your palate and your wallet.” Below, Douglas outlines 7 Champagne swaps that are sure to tantalize your tastebuds. Corpinnat and Cava It's rare to see Cava and its innovative offshoot, Corpinnat, mentioned together, but these two Spanish sparkling wines share a commitment to quality. Corpinnat represents a collective of small, independent organic wineries that have opted out of the official Spanish quality hierarchy to craft sparkling wines that reflect their unique philosophies and practices. What sets Corpinnat apart from Cava is its stringent requirement that grapes must come from owned organic vineyards and be vinified on the winery's premises. Each bottle must mature for a minimum of 18 months, surpassing Champagne's minimum requirement by six months. Many producers opt for extended aging, with some wines maturing for 60 months or longer. This extended bottle maturation allows the wines to evolve from fresh fruity aromas into complex nutty and bread-like flavors, enriching the overall tasting experience. In contrast, Cava, while often perceived as more industrial, can also produce exceptional wines. Major producers like Freixenet and Codorniu dominate the market, leaving smaller-scale artisans with limited exposure. Like Corpinnat, Cava is primarily based on the indigenous grapes Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Parellada, which deliver a delicate, fruity profile with a light body. The German and Austrian Powerhouses Cool climates are renowned for producing wines with vibrant acidity—the backbone of sparkling wine. This principle underpins the German and Austrian passion for their sparkling creation, known as Sekt. In these countries, Riesling often takes center stage, although you may also encounter Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and other varietals that can rival high-end Champagnes. Germany and Austria pride themselves on their quality sparkling wines. Austria has recently launched a new Charta, establishing a hierarchy for “Sekt Austria.” This pyramid includes “Grosse Reserve” (big reserve), “Reserve,” and the foundational “Sekt Austria” quality, with aging requirements ranging from a minimum of 6 months on the lees to at least 36 months for the highest tier. This commitment to quality has garnered increased interest from both tourists and consumers alike, prompting Austria to appoint Andreas Vitasek as their new sparkling wine ambassador. When exploring German Sekt, focus on renowned regions like Mosel, Rheingau, and Rheinhessen. Notable producers include Kallfelz, Barth, and Raumland. In Austria, look for high-end offerings from Bründlmayer, Loimer, and Domäne Wachau. Crémant de Bourgogne If you prefer to stay in France, consider heading south to Bourgogne. The region primarily produces sparkling wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with Aligoté providing a refreshing exception. Crémant de Bourgogne offers a lighter, fruit-driven experience, illustrating a frothy texture that dances on the palate—an excellent alternative to its more famous cousin. Cartizze: Prosecco's Crown Jewel In the northern Italian region of Veneto, the hill of Cartizze stands as Prosecco's most revered site. Officially classified in 1969, its reputation as an exceptional origin stretches back more than two centuries. Rising to 350 meters (1,150 feet) above sea level, Cartizze encompasses just 108 hectares (280 acres). With land prices exceeding 1 million Euros per hectare, it rivals the world's most expensive vineyard sites, including those in Burgundy. Ownership rarely changes hands, with plots typically passed down through families, underscoring the value placed on this unique terroir. The slopes of Cartizze are so steep that vineyard work must be done entirely by hand. In some areas, workers use sledges to transport grapes and tools, their efforts evoking comparisons to mountaineering. This challenging terroir, combined with the elevation and a predominance of old vines, produces Prosecco of remarkable intensity and character. Most wines from Cartizze are crafted in a ‘dry' style, leaving a touch of residual sugar. This subtle sweetness enhances the vibrant fruitiness, while the crisp acidity keeps the wine beautifully balanced. The result is a Prosecco of elegance and finesse, ideal for those looking to celebrate with something truly special. Moscato d'Asti: The Sweet Charm of Piedmont In the heart of Piedmont, a region famed for Nebbiolo's brooding intensity and wines like Barolo and Barbaresco, Moscato d'Asti offers a gentler, more unassuming charm. Made from the highly aromatic Muscat grape, this sparkling sweet wine is often overlooked in favor of its more prestigious neighbors but has a unique role in the region's vinous identity. The defining features of Moscato d'Asti are its fragrant sweetness, low alcohol, and gentle spritz. This combination allows producers to fully explore the grape's potential, highlighting its characteristic notes of orange blossom, ripe apricot, and honeyed peach. At just 5.5–7% ABV, it provides a light and refreshing contrast to the weightier wines often associated with Piedmont. Its flexibility at the table is a key strength. Moscato d'Asti can elevate desserts like white chocolate and candied fruits or pair beautifully with creamy and blue cheeses. For some, it even becomes the dessert, offering a delicately sweet conclusion to a meal without overwhelming the palate. Cap Classique: South Africa's Sparkling Star For those who find Italian fruitiness is too exuberant, South Africa's Cap Classique offers an elegant alternative. Introduced as a defined style in 1971, this sparkling wine is crafted in the traditional method, involving a secondary fermentation in the bottle. While the classification is relatively modern, the South African tradition of producing sparkling wines dates back over 360 years, firmly rooted in the country's winemaking history. Cap Classique spends a minimum of 15 months on the lees, allowing delicate notes of brioche and hazelnut to develop. However, the hallmark of South African sparkling wine remains its bright, fruit-driven profile, often leaning into flavors of citrus, stone fruit, and even tropical notes, rather than the pronounced toastiness typical of Champagne. Today, Cap Classique has earned its place among the world's finest sparkling wines. Its ability to balance value and quality makes it an appealing choice for celebrations, offering a distinctive South African character without pretension. Whether as a centerpiece for an event or an unassuming companion to the moment, it stands ready to impress. Tasmania: A Sparkling Island of Innovation Tasmania, Australia's southernmost state, lies around 150 miles (240 kilometers) south of the mainland, separated by the often-turbulent Bass Strait. Known for its pristine wilderness and cool climate, it is the nation's most southerly and coolest wine region, home to a scattering of nearly 1,000 offshore islands. This remoteness has shaped its identity as a haven for eco-tourism and, increasingly, as a center for world-class sparkling wine. The island's wine industry is small but tightly focused, with producers working collaboratively and sustainably. Biosecurity is paramount, and tourists are often barred from entering vineyards to prevent soil-borne pests or diseases inadvertently carried on footwear. Inter-planting with native vegetation, allowing certain ‘weeds' to flourish, and preserving wildlife corridors reflect Tasmania's dedication to environmental harmony. Tasmania's cool climate is particularly suited to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the cornerstone varieties of its sparkling wines. These wines are defined by their vivid fruit intensity, bracing acidity, and, in many cases, the nuanced autolytic complexity of toast and brioche. The sparkling wines often rival the quality of Champagne, though with a distinctive freshness and clarity born of the island's maritime influence and clean air. Despite its small scale, Tasmanian sparkling wine is increasingly found on the shelves of fine wine retailers and the wine lists of high-end restaurants across the globe. Its ability to combine precision, elegance, and sustainability ensures Tasmania's place among the leading sparkling wine regions of the world. Emerging Regions Beyond the traditional producers, numerous up-and-coming regions are crafting outstanding sparkling wines. The United Kingdom, Argentina, and cooler areas of California are all making their mark in the sparkling wine scene, offering fresh and innovative options for consumers looking to diversify their celebratory toast. “Champagne will long-remain a classic, of course, but it no longer holds an exclusive claim as the ‘must-have’ sparkling wine for holidays and other special occasions,” Douglas asserts. While this iconic bubbly is a favorite celebratory beverage for many, the world of wine offers a range of exciting alternatives that deserve due attention.” I’ll toast to that. Previous Next

  • Life Longevity: Study Reveals The 3 Florida Communities Most Confident About Reaching 100 | sun-times

Life Longevity: Study Reveals The 3 Florida Communities Most Confident About Reaching 100 South Florida Sun Times May 28, 2026 In Parts Of The Mediterranean, Living Into Your 90S (And Beyond) Isn’t Unusual. These “Blue Zone” Communities Have Long Been Seen As Proof That, Under The Right Conditions, A Longer Life Isn’t Just Luck — It’s Shaped By Lifestyle, Environment, And Daily Habits. The U.S. doesn’t carry the same reputation — but it does have its own pockets where people seem to thrive well into later life. So where in America do people feel most confident about their future — and why? A Mission for Michael commissioned Cherry Data Signals to survey 3,025 respondents, exploring how people think about their own longevity — not just in years, but in terms of control, optimism, and mindset. Respondents were asked to estimate their chances of reaching 100. From this, they identified the communities with the strongest “longevity mindset” — places where people feel most positive, proactive, and in control of their long-term health. The top 10 communities where people are most confident of reaching 100: #1. St. Augustine, Florida St. Augustine blends history, walkability, and coastal living into a lifestyle that naturally supports long-term wellbeing. With pedestrian-friendly streets, easy access to the waterfront, and a steady rhythm that encourages time outdoors, staying active feels like part of daily life. There’s also a strong sense of place and community, which helps support social connection. It’s the kind of environment where routine movement and a slower pace work together over time. #2. Kula, Hawaii Upcountry Maui has a more rustic, alternative feel than the beach towns below, and Kula captures that especially well. It's a quaint area on the slopes of Haleakala known for farms, botanical gardens and rich volcanic soil, with the wider Upcountry region rooted in agriculture and small-scale rural living. That makes it a strong fit for a longevity angle built around lower stress, local food and a more intentional pace of life. #3. Dunedin, Florida Dunedin offers a more relaxed, community-driven version of healthy living. Anchored by the Pinellas Trail and a network of parks and waterfront spaces, it makes walking and cycling feel like second nature. Residents often point to that everyday activity, combined with a friendly, low-stress atmosphere, as key to feeling positive about their long-term health — a mindset that aligns with greater confidence about living longer. #4. Asheville, North Carolina Asheville blends outdoor living with a strong creative and wellness-focused culture. Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, it encourages regular movement through hiking, walking, and time spent outside, while its arts scene keeps people mentally engaged. In communities like this, residents often feel that lifestyle plays a direct role in longevity, with many expressing confidence that their routines and environment could support them living well into older age. #5. Northshore Chattanooga, Tennessee Northshore brings a more active, neighborhood-scale version of healthy living into the city. Access to the Tennessee Riverwalk and nearby green spaces makes walking and cycling part of everyday life, while local businesses and community spaces keep people socially connected. That balance between movement and engagement often shapes how residents view their future health, with many feeling confident about living well into later life. #6. Hanalei, Hawaii Hanalei offers a slower, more grounded take on long-term wellbeing. At the foot of misty mountains and alongside its famous taro fields, it has a setting that feels deeply tied to nature and everyday routine. Communities like this can naturally foster the sense that a long life is something you can shape through pace, environment and daily habits — which fits neatly with the mindset side of your survey. #7. Blue Hill, Maine Blue Hill leans into a quieter, more reflective way of living. Surrounded by forests and coastline, it encourages a slower pace where routines feel easier to maintain. Daily life often includes time outdoors and close community interaction, both of which support long-term wellbeing. In places like this, residents often feel that consistency and environment play a meaningful role in how long they can live. #8. Haleʻiwa, Hawaii Haleʻiwa has a laid-back, surf-town rhythm that makes healthy living feel unforced. Known as the social and artistic hub of Oʻahu's North Shore, it's surrounded by famous beaches and local food spots, giving it a strong mix of movement, outdoor time and community life. It's easy to frame as the kind of place where people stay active almost by default, simply because the setting pulls them outside. #9. Midway, Kentucky Midway leans into a quieter, small-town rhythm that feels easy to sustain. With walkable streets, local shops, and surrounding countryside, it encourages regular movement and time outdoors without much effort. Residents often point to that balance between activity and pace as a reason they feel positive about their long-term health, making it a natural fit for a longevity-focused angle. #10. Apalachicola, Florida Apalachicola leans into a quieter, more unhurried way of life. With its coastal setting and small-town scale, it encourages time outdoors and a slower daily rhythm that feels easier to maintain. Fishing, walking, and community interaction are part of everyday life rather than planned activities. It’s a place where lower stress and consistency help support both physical and mental wellbeing over time. One of the clearest patterns in the survey was that Americans overwhelmingly associate longevity with lifestyle rather than luck. While genetics still mattered to some respondents, far more people pointed toward daily routines, stress levels, and environment as the real drivers behind a long life. In fact, “daily habits” ranked as the single biggest factor in whether someone reaches 100, with 28% of respondents choosing diet and exercise over anything else. Stress levels followed closely behind at 22%, suggesting many people increasingly see longevity as tied not just to physical health, but to emotional wellbeing and pace of life too. Environment — where someone lives — also ranked highly, reinforcing why so many of the communities in the ranking shared traits like walkability, access to nature, and slower routines. Some of the survey’s most revealing findings included: • 52% of Floridians believe they are currently doing enough to maximize their chances of living to 100. • Only 18% described themselves as “very likely” to reach 100. • Nearly half of respondents (48%) admitted they do not feel they are doing enough to support long-term longevity. • Just 4% believed luck plays the biggest role in reaching 100, making it the least selected answer overall. • The survey also revealed a strong preference for slower, smaller communities when Floridians picture the ideal place for a long life. Small towns were the most associated with longevity overall, chosen by 34% of respondents, comfortably ahead of cities. When asked what personally makes them feel most confident about living longer, respondents leaned heavily toward factors tied to balance and sustainability rather than extreme health trends: • Low-stress lifestyle — 25% • Regular physical activity — 22% • Healthy food options — 21% • Work-life balance — 12% • Access to nature — 10% • Strong sense of community — 9% Another striking finding was how many people believe longevity is built through consistency. Almost half of respondents (46%) said they do something every single day that they believe improves their chances of living longer — whether that means walking, exercising, eating well, reducing stress, or spending time outdoors. “A lot of longevity research focuses on what people do — diet, exercise, environment,” says Anand Meta LMFT (Executive Director, AMFM) “What this study highlights is how people think. Feeling in control of your health, staying optimistic about the future, and believing your daily habits matter can be just as powerful. In many of these communities, it’s that mindset — not just the setting — that’s helping people feel confident about living longer.” Methodology: Survey of 3,025 U.S. respondents to identify the communities where people feel most confident, proactive, and in control of reaching 100. The survey was carried out on cherrysignals.com using a nationally representative panel and balanced across age, gender, household income, and geographic region. Results were weighted where necessary to align with U.S. population benchmarks. May 2026.
