Safe Places to Play: A New Mini-Pitch Was Installed at the Police Athletic League Hollywood September 5, 2024 Share On Wednesday, August 28, 2024, a new mini-pitch was installed at the Police Athletic League (PAL) in Hollywood, FL. The mini-pitch, which is a small, customized, hard-court soccer surface, is poised to become a vibrant hub for soccer programs and pick-up games, offering children and families a safe space to participate in the world’s most popular sport. The installation was made possible through a partnership with U.S. Soccer Foundation and the MLS Players Association with the support of Genesis Gives, the corporate social responsibility initiative of Genesis Motor America, committed to the development of the future generation through the support of STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). During the grand opening event, youth and coaches participated in a ceremonial first kick and played in an inaugural scrimmage. This mini-pitch marks the latest development in the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s Safe Places to Play program which aims to provide children a safe place to play in underserved communities by creating 1,000 mini-pitches across the country by 2026. To date, the U.S. Soccer Foundation has installed more than 700 mini-pitches nationwide. • Animal Vintage: Specialty Shop Opens in Downtown Hollywood

Animal Vintage: Specialty Shop Opens in Downtown Hollywood January 27, 2022 Share Maria Barraco would be the first to tell you that she loves animals -- but her business, Animal Vintage, has nothing to do with the furry or feathered kind. Instead, she said, the name came from her passion for fashion, and evolved from a nickname a friend had given her – Shopping Animal, because she shopped non-stop – when she took on buying and selling vintage clothing and accessories as a career. "I've been doing this for 27 years, since I was a teenager," said the Plantation native, who lived in New York and worked as a fashion stylist before moving back to South Florida in 2015. Now, with the opening of the Animal Vintage showroom at 2140 Tyler Street, she’s taking it full time. With her life and business partner, muralist Jon Olson, she's expanding the brand from an Etsy shop to a full website and a physical showroom, right here in Downtown Hollywood. "We really love Downtown Hollywood," she enthused. "It's so charming and it definitely has vintage vibes. It's also the perfect location between Fort Lauderdale and Miami." The covered windows of the new showroom belie the excitement inside, where vintage fashion lovers can come to buy or sell treasures from the Animal Vintage finely-curated selection of apparel and accessories, almost all of them from the 1940s to the 1980s. Barraco and Olsen frequently travel the country, to fashion and trade shows and on shopping trips, to add to their unique collection. In addition, they're always interested in seeing items available for sale privately. Some of the items recently available in the Animal Vintage Etsy shop included a '70s knit and fringe sweater vest from Miss Joann California for $96, a Gucci monogram leather handbag from the '80s for $244, and a Betsey Johnson floral mini dress from the '90s for $146. Visits to the Animal Vintage showroom are by appointment only; contact Barraco at 917-684-8873 or via email at animalvintage77@gmail.com . Free parking is available at the showroom. To see what's currently in stock, visit their Etsy shop at AnimalVintageMiami. You can also check out some of the new styles on Instagram at AnimalVintage. Downtown Hollywood offers on-street metered parking for $1.50 per hour, as well as municipal garage parking for $1 per hour. Municipal garage locations are 251 S. 20th Avenue (between Harrison Street and Van Buren Street) and 251 N. 19th Avenue (between Tyler Street and Polk Street). • How to Find the Right Doctor

How to Find the Right Doctor (Family Features) March 17, 2022 Share Whether you're rarely sick or have conditions that require frequent visits to the doctor, having a trusted and skilled health care provider is an important step in protecting your health. Any number of reasons can result in needing to find a new doctor, such as moving to a new community, changes to your insurance, your old doctor retiring or needing a specialist. These suggestions from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) can help you be more efficient and thorough as you look for a doctor who is right for you. Ask for Recommendations Talk to people you know about whether they have a provider they like. If you're looking for a new provider because of a move or retirement, ask your current doctor for a recommendation. If you need to make a change with your primary care doctor but see specialists or other medical professionals you like and trust, you can also request referrals from them. Check with Your Insurance Company If you have health insurance, you may need to choose from a list of doctors in your plan's network. Some insurance plans may let you choose a doctor outside your network if you pay more of the cost. To find a doctor who takes your insurance, call your insurance company and ask for a list of doctors near you who are in-network or use the insurance company's website to search for a doctor. It's also a good idea to call the doctor's office and ask for confirmation they take your plan. You should have your insurance, Medicare or Medicaid card handy in case the office needs your plan details. Narrow Your Options Some of the providers you consider may not be viable options for simple reasons, like their practice isn't currently taking new patients or they don't have office hours matching your schedule. You can also consider questions such as hospital affiliations and whether other providers can help if you need emergency care and your doctor isn't available. Take a Deeper Look Online research can tell you a great deal about potential doctors, from biographical information and credentials to ratings by former patients. When searching for a new provider, another important area to consider is financial relationships. One resource patients can consider is Open Payments, a national disclosure program within CMS that provides visibility into financial relationships between drug and medical device companies and physicians, and teaching hospitals. The government requires pharmaceutical companies, device manufacturers and group purchasing organizations to report funds they give health care providers in the form of meals, entertainment, travel, gifts, consulting fees, research payments and more, promoting transparency and helping uncover potential conflicts of interest. It's important to know most health care providers receive payments. Just because financial ties are reported does not mean anyone has done anything wrong. However, patients can use the information to talk with their provider about why they recommend certain medications or treatments, including asking about generic options, which are equally as effective as name brands but typically less expensive. It's also an opportunity to start a discussion with a provider about areas of professional interest and expertise based on research or consulting. Listen to Your Gut If you're undecided, request an introductory appointment with a provider you're considering. Look for a clinic where you are treated with respect and the medical team listens to your opinions and concerns. You should feel comfortable asking questions, and the doctor needs to be able to explain things in ways you understand. Find more resources for your health care needs at https://www.cms.gov < Previous News Next News >
