The Museum Of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA): Commemorates Haitian Heritage Month And Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month May 4, 2023 Share Through the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA)’s continued efforts to include diverse voices and perspectives, the museum is offering a robust series of educational and public programming to commemorate Haitian Heritage Month and Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month this May. MOCA is pleased to debut two exciting exhibitions opening this spring. “Lonnie Holley: If You Really Knew” invites visitors to experience the work of prolific Artist Lonnie Holley in his first major exhibition in the South. The second showcases the work of 12 intergenerational South Florida artists selected to show their work in the “South Florida Cultural Consortium (SFCC)” Exhibition. Both exhibitions go on view Wednesday, May 10th, 2023 through Sunday, October 1st, 2023. “Lonnie Holley: If You Really Knew” provides an intimate and focused look at the career of Birmingham, Alabama-born Artist and Musician Lonnie Holley. The exhibition, curated by MOCA Curator Adeze Wilford, will feature 70 works including foundational “sandstone” sculptures, new works on paper and large-scale quilt paintings that depict faces. Known for his unique style of art that draws inspiration from his life experiences, Holley often incorporates found objects and everyday materials, which he transforms into thought-provoking art. Holley’s influence on Southern art is highlighted throughout “If You Only Knew,” including a section he curated featuring works from artists such as Miami native Purvis Young, Thornton Dial, Mary T. Smith and Hawkins Bowling. Also opening this spring is the South Florida Cultural Consortium (SFCC) Exhibition, which brings together 12 artists working across various media including sculpture, film and site-specific installations. The exhibition, this year hosted and organized by MOCA, will provide a snapshot of the breadth and depth of the artistic talent in the South Florida art scene. On view outside the museum is MOCA’s most recent “Art On The Plaza” Commission, Edison Peñafiel's installation, “Run, Run, Run Like The Wind.” This colorful display of nine banners hangs from the highest point of the palm trees throughout MOCA's Plaza, showcasing characters on the run and accompanied by text taken from Latin American protest songs. Peñafiel's work will highlight the act of escape during political turmoil, speaking to themes of human migration, displacement and social justice. It will be on display until late May 2023. On view through Sunday, June 25th, 2023, visitors will be able to step into MOCA’s Paradise Courtyard and discover “Victory Garden,” an interactive sculptural community garden created by Miami-based Artist Emmett Moore. Drawing inspiration from Victory Gardens of the past, which were planted during wartime to supplement rations and boost morale, Moore’s “Victory Garden” connects the local community with contemporary art and encourages visitors to reflect on their relationship with the built environment. • Hollywood Residents: Parking Ticket Enforcement & Waterline Flushing Continue

Hollywood Residents: Parking Ticket Enforcement & Waterline Flushing Continue July 21, 2022 Share Beginning this week, Monday, July 18th, 2022 owners of vehicles with 10 or more Unpaid Parking Citations with the City of Hollywood run the risk of having their vehicle immobilized. Several months ago, the City’s Parking Division partnered with the State of Florida Department of Motor Vehicles to place a hold on Vehicle Registration Renewals for chronic offenders with multiple Delinquent Citations. Following the implementation of this partnership and on the heels of multiple notices from the City and the City’s Collection Agency, vehicle owners who have chosen to remain delinquent may find their vehicle immobilized if parked on a City street or in any other City parking facility at any time, whether it is legally parked or not. All fees must be paid in full to the Parking Office prior to the removal of an immobilization device. The device will remain in-place for a maximum of 3-days before a vehicle is towed, impounded and stored at the owner’s expense. The City Code of Ordinance 72.156 authorizes the use of motor vehicle immobilizing devices for those with three or more citations. Enforcement will continue as the focus narrows to those with three or more citations. Payment Options Pay Online: http://www.hollywoodfl.org/Parking Pay in Person: Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. - 2600 Hollywood Boulevard, West Side Annex Building, Hollywood, Florida 33020. Payment Method: Cash, Credit Card, Money Order or Cashier's Check. For questions regarding this Enforcement Operation, please call the Parking Office at: (954) 921-3535. Water Treatment Continues The City’s Department of Public Utilities’ Annual Free Chlorine Line Flushing Program is in progress and will continue into August. The Free Chlorine portion of this program will end on Monday, August 15th, 2022. If necessary, flushing may continue across the City through Thursday, August 25th, 2022 to achieve optimal System Maintenance. This annual flushing helps rid the water distribution pipelines of any accumulated sediments. The hydrant flushing may temporarily cause cloudy or discolored water, which should clear in a few hours. Residents may also notice a change in the taste of their water during this time as well. The cloudiness is due to sediment in the pipelines and is not harmful or hazardous. You can speed the clearing by opening your faucets and taps and letting them run until your water runs clear. Typically, flushing will take place in the evening hours between 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. when the demand for water is low. During the water line flushing period, the Water Treatment Plant will temporarily change its method of disinfection from Chloramines to Free Chlorination. Residents may notice a change in the taste and odor of the water during this time. The City will discontinue Free Chlorination as of Monday, August 15th, 2022. Owners and managers of businesses with fish and shellfish holding tanks and users of Kidney Dialysis machines are advised that regular methods for testing and removing Free Chlorine will not be effective during the remainder of the flushing period. It will be necessary to test and adjust for Chloramines after Monday, August 15th, 2022. Should you have additional questions, please call the City of Hollywood’s Water Quality at: (954) 967-4230 and press option 2. Or call the Water Treatment Plant and ask for Luis Montoya, Public Utilities Manager, or Jorge Marin, Water Treatment Plant Superintendent at: (954) 967-4230. < Previous News Next News >

  • Helping Your Pet With Separation Anxiety

Helping Your Pet With Separation Anxiety September 12, 2024 Share If you have ever lived in a household alongside a pet that excessively howls, scratches at the door, or exhibits an overall sense of panic when a loved one leaves the home, it can be beneficial to speak with a veterinarian about the potential diagnosis of separation anxiety. Dr. Lori Teller, a Clinical Professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, unpacks the actions linked to separation anxiety with methods of how to alleviate the pet’s stress and behavioral responses associated with it. Unwelcome Changes Separation anxiety occurs when an animal — most commonly a dog, though some cats may experience this type of Anxiety as well — becomes upset due to being apart from their owner or any individual to whom the pet has grown attached. While Anxiety, in general, has many triggers and is frequently multifactorial, Teller said there are specific life-events or experiences that may contribute to a dog’s development of separation anxiety, including: • Abandonment when young • Poor socialization, especially when young • Lack of training to be left alone and to entertain itself • Divorce of a family member • Death of a family member • Sudden change in work or school schedules According to Teller, a dog’s personality may also contribute to Separation Anxiety, as some dogs may be naturally more clingy than others. Stage-Five Clinger Because anxiety looks different for every pet, it is important to differentiate excitement or a lack of training from Anxiety. Several identifiable canine behaviors that signal Separation Anxiety are: • Pacing • Whining • Shaking • Excessive barking, drooling, or panting • Destructive behavior, including digging out of the yard, or urinating and defecating in the house Cats also experience Stress when there are major changes in their lives or in the household, but they express it differently. Signs that a Cat is experiencing separation anxiety may include: • Urinating in inappropriate locations • Lack of appetite • Loud, excessive meowing If you have concerns about behaviors your pet is displaying, Teller says it’s important to discuss those with your veterinarian. Videos of the behavior can be helpful in determining what is going on. Prescribed Chill Pills Teller says treating separation anxiety requires more than a little “chill pill.” “Medications alone will not resolve separation anxiety,” Teller said. “There are a variety of medications that are used to help alleviate anxiety and make it easier to institute a behavior modification plan. “Your veterinarian will work with you to create a behavior modification plan to help eliminate undesirable behaviors and replace them with more appropriate ones,” she said. Another way to help your pet is that when you know a big change is coming, helping them prepare by introducing activities to their routine also may help prevent Anxiety when that big change eventually comes. “Prevention is key, and there are a variety of things that can be done to help prevent Separation Anxiety in pets,” Teller said. “Pets need to learn that it is OK to be alone and to entertain themselves, even when someone is home.” Introducing puzzle toys, food-stuffed toys, and long-lasting chews are options that can help to replace that comfort person with a comfort item. And for sense-based comfort, playing the radio and keeping consistent pheromone diffusers in use can create a safe and recognizable space without their favorite human by their side. According to Teller, another method to potentially reduce Anxiety is to encourage your pet to exercise and release some energy prior to leaving for your day at school or work. A long walk or run or game of fetch may do. Through exercise, a dog trades morning stress-filled yelps with a morning nap instead. Comfort In Confinement Finally, when dealing with an anxious dog, crates can offer an enclosed sense of security in their distress. “When putting a dog in a crate, use lots of praise and make sure the dog has a puzzle toy or chew treat when it goes into the crate,” Teller said. “As a dog feels more comfortable, you can gradually increase the amount of space it has access to — moving from the crate to a room and then hopefully to most of the house. It is important that a dog learns from early on that a crate is a safe place. Some dogs may not be amenable to crate training until their separation Anxiety has lessened.” Likewise, cats also need safe places, though usually not crates. These safe spaces can include a room with perches at different levels or nooks where they can hide, Teller says. “If you notice a change in your dog’s or cat’s behavior, speak with your veterinarian, have a complete physical done, and be sure to let your veterinarian know that there have been changes in the pet’s lifestyle or household,” Teller said. It is important to recognize that separation anxiety is a medical condition and needs to be treated appropriately. By encouraging your pet’s independence, and working with a veterinarian, as necessary, owners can help instill in their beloved companions behaviors that allow them to thrive on their own. • A Non-Typical Smoke Shop

A Non-Typical Smoke Shop PROFILES May 2021 May 15, 2021 Share Inside, you’ll find an extensive assortment of merchandise ranging well beyond the offerings of a typical smoke shop. “Smokes Unlimited” proclaims the sign above the front door of a shop on the southeast corner of North Federal Highway and Pembroke Road/Moffett Street in Hallandale Beach. Inside, you’ll find an extensive assortment of merchandise ranging well beyond the offerings of a typical smoke shop. Looking for incense? Smokes Unlimited has it. Some two dozen different fragrances are available. “Just light a stick and let its aroma dissipate cooking odors and freshen the air,” says the shop’s co-owner, Shafiul Azam. Incense also may be used for aromatherapy and meditation, and as an insect repellent. Another unusual item on sale at Smokes Unlimited is kratom, made from the broad, dark-green leaves of a tropical tree, Mitragyna speciosa. A member of the coffee family, it grows in Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and elsewhere in southeast Asia, and has a long history of traditional use in parts of that region to manage pain and opioid withdrawal and to counteract fatigue. In small amounts, kratom produces an increase in alertness, energy, and sociability. In larger amounts, its effects include a decrease in pain, an increase in pleasure, and a sedative effect. Despite its mind-altering psychotropic effects and a tendency to be habit-forming, kratom is not illegal. You can buy it in leaf form for brewing tea, as a powder, in capsules, and as an extract or gum. Smokes Unlimited also sells more typical smoke-store products such as: • Disposable e-cigarettes – known by the names fume, HQD, Vcan, and many others -- containing “juice” for 1,000 to 4,500 puffs. • Reusable e-cigarettes and the juices to refill them. • Commercially made tobacco cigarettes. • Premium papers for hand-rolling one’s own cigarettes. • Handmade cigars with tobaccos from multiple locations around the globe, including Connecticut, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Nicaragua. • Hookahs (water pipes), a type of smoking system that originated in India, spread throughout Persia and the Arabic world, and today is increasing in popularity in America. • The special shisha tobacco preparations to smoke in the hookahs, containing flavored tobacco or some tobacco-free herbal mixture with a molasses base, plus charcoal to create the combustion. • Lighter fluids and lighters, including butane torches. Cannabis Products Other featured items at Smokes Unlimited include products from legal strains of the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa, that don’t produce a “high” and don’t require a doctor’s prescription. These items contain cannabidiol (CBD) or Delta-8-Tetrahydrocannabinol. “They come as pre-rolled cigarettes, gummies, and tinctures – oils you put under your tongue,” Azam explains. “You use them for relaxation, sleep, and pain relief. They’re available in doses ranging from 1,000 mg to 2,500 mg.” Just so you know, Delta-8 is a very close relative of Delta-9-Tetrahydro-cannabinol, a hemp strain popularly known as marijuana. Delta-8 is legal in most places, including Florida, and some consumers prefer Delta-8, alleging that it’s more effective than CBD. In Florida, Delta-9 is legal only for medical purposes and requires users to register with the state and to obtain a recommendation from a medical doctor or doctor of osteopathy who has been certified by the state as a marijuana physician. Smokes Unlimited is not a medical marijuana dispensary and does not sell Delta-9. A Work in Progress Azam came to the U.S. from Bangladesh 11 years ago. Before emigrating, he earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Internation-al Islamic University Chittigong, the largest top-graded government-approved private university in Bangladesh. Upon arrival in the U.S., he spent almost five years working in a grocery store before beginning a commercial collaboration with a fellow Bangladeshi business partner, Sajib Choudhury. Today – in addition to the Hallandale Beach Smokes Unlimited – Azam and Choudhury own other smoke shops in Dania Beach and Hollywood, and convenience stores in Delray Beach and Pompano Beach. Three years ago Azam attended a business expo in Miami and learned from a business broker about the availability of Midway Food Store, a 2,100-sq-ft convenience store in a strategic high-traffic location just south of the boundary between Hollywood and Hallandale Beach. The partners bought it and spent a year operating it. Then they began rebranding it as Smokes Unlimited and adapting it to their own business model. “We’re changing the business little by little,” Azam says. Gone now are Midway Food Store’s canned goods, groceries, and limited fast-food menu. Merchandise remaining from its previous convenience-store existence includes a diverse inventory of beverages (beer, wine, flavored vodkas, mixers, energy drinks, sodas, and fruit juices) in a row of coolers lining the entire back wall of the store, and a modest selection of packaged pastries, bags of salty snacks, candies, over-the-counter pain relievers, baseball caps, boxes of feminine hygiene products, and plastic packages of underwear. The new sign above the front entrance mentions a lounge, although that hasn’t happened yet. “Because of COVID-19 we couldn’t get a lounge permit now, but we went ahead and put it on the sign anyway,” Azam explains. Open Dialogues: How the Faith-Based Community Can Better Include and Accept LGBTQ Individuals September 16, 2021 Share Open Dialogues reveals in intimate detail how the LGBTQ community is often marginalized within families, schools, churches and public spaces The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood will present a live public screening and discussion of its documentary short film Open Dialogues: Stories From the LGBTQ Community on Wednesday, September 22nd, 2021 at the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, located at 1530 Hollywood Boulevard. The evening begins at 6:30 p.m. with a reception, followed at 7 p.m. with the screening and discussion of the 20-minute film in the church sanctuary. Todd Delmay of the Hollywood LGBTQ+ Council will lead the interactive talk with First Presbyterian Pastor Kennedy McGowan and Temple Beth El Rabbi Alan Tuffs. Completed in 2020, Open Dialogues: Stories From the LGBTQ Community captures the diverse coming-out narratives of seven Broward residents who took part in on-camera interviews. The film was produced by the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood, and was directed, photographed and edited by award-winning Miami-based filmmaker Freddy Rodriguez. Open Dialogues reveals in intimate detail how the LGBTQ community is often marginalized within families, schools, churches and public spaces – and how individuals interviewed for the film learned to empower themselves in these spaces. The Broward residents who took part in on-camera interviews are Julie Marie Wade, Dan Bassett, Christine Walters, Omar Morales, Gary Keating, Franchesca D’Amore, and Michael Goodman. This inter-denominational event will engage audience members in a discussion of how the faith-based community can better include and accept LGBTQ individuals here in Broward County. “Our vision for our church is based on three words – invited, welcomed and loved,” Pastor McGowan said. “That’s what we feel God does. We want to give that to each and every person and have them feel that from us. This is one way for us to live out that vision for the LGBTQ community, which has not always been welcomed in the faith community.” Pastor McGowan has served more than 25 years in Christian ministry, both here in South Florida and in Long Island, New York. First Presbyterian is among 21 Broward religious congregations who comprise Bold Justice, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that holds community leaders accountable to solve problems in Broward County. Rabbi Tuffs joined Temple Beth El of Hollywood in 1997, where he is committed to preserving Jewish tradition while remaining open to new ideas. “The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood is excited to share our Open Dialogues film in the sanctuary at First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood,” said Joy Satterlee, the Center’s Executive Director. “This event supports the Center’s goal for Open Dialogues to foster greater inclusion and acceptance of the LGBTQ community here in Broward County.” Open Dialogues was an Official Selection in OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival and 35th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, where it was awarded Best Broward Documentary. It was recently selected to be screened in the 2021 Orlando Film Festival from October 28th, 2021 to November 4th, 2021. For more information, visit: https://www.artandculturecenter.org . • Park Participation: Hollywood Earns Recertification As Community Wildlife Habitat By The National Wildlife Federation

Park Participation: Hollywood Earns Recertification As Community Wildlife Habitat By The National Wildlife Federation September 28, 2023 Share The City of Hollywood has been recertified for the seventh year in a row as a Community Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). The Community Wildlife Habitat Program is designed to encourage property owners to create a habitat suitable for Native Species. Community-wide certification is earned by certifying individual properties (homes, parks, schools, businesses and others), through Education and Outreach. Points are earned by engaging community members in Habitat Restoration Projects, providing resources like Native Plant Lists and communicating through websites and Social Media. In addition to points earned for new private properties in Hollywood that have gotten Certified as Wildlife Habitats, this year the City earned points for its Outreach Efforts on Turtle Lighting Compliance, completing Phase I of our City-Wide Tree Inventory, and partnering with the Youth Environmental Alliance to maintain the dunes in Hollywood North Beach Park. These collective efforts provide: food, shelter and safe nesting places for Birds, Butterflies, Endangered Sea Turtles and everything in between. But the City cannot earn this certification alone, we need residents to certify their own yard as a Backyard Habitat. A big thank you to everyone who is already providing host plants for our native Butterflies, nectar for pollinators, berries and seeds for spring and fall migrants and places to raise young for our year-round residents and seasonal breeders! If you want to welcome Butterflies and Birds onto your property, you can find information on how to get started at NWF’s Garden For Wildlife page. For those interested in certifying their property, it’s simple and you don’t even have to have a yard. A container garden on your patio or balcony can support pollinators and other Native Wildlife. To certify your Wildlife Habitat, you need to provide: food, water, cover, places to raise young (Butterfly host plants count!) and use sustainable practices. For more details and to see the National Wildlife Federation’s certification checklist, go to National Wildlife Federation - Certify.
