The evening will explore the enduring meaning of Yom HaShoah through the lens of Jewish identity, resilience, and moral courage. According to the event announcement, the program will examine “a powerful lesson of the Iranian Revolution and what it teaches us about standing firmly in our Jewish identity — especially when the ground shifts beneath us.” Resnick brings both personal experience and a compelling perspective to the conversation. After the Iranian Revolution in 1979, her family was forced to flee Iran and rebuild their lives in the United States. Her story and message underscore themes of Jewish unity, identity, and shared peoplehood. Haleh Rabizadeh Resnick Bio: Haleh was born in the United States to Iranian parents. Her family moved back to Iran before the Revolution…after which, as a Jewish family, they were forced to flee back to the U.S. when she was just in third grade. The experience of growing up as very much an outsider in what she considers an incredible country has helped to give her a remarkably unique perspective that applies to both children and adults when it comes to personal relationships. Haleh graduated Rutgers Law School with high honors and after working in the world of finance in internationally recognized law firms, Haleh temporarily retired from law to be home to raise her five children. In that time, she authored the books Little Patient Big Doctor and Navigating OIT both supporting parents with children’s health challenges by encouraging out of the box thinking and a holistic approach to health. She has spoken nationally on children’s health topics to parent groups and medical conferences and appeared in both local and national media outlets including CNN. Recently Haleh released the Think Again Series, encouraging children and partnering with parents to teach understanding of others through innovation and imagination. As a life-long educator and counselor, this series is one that is designed to engage people of all ages. Haleh has also always been fully involved in non-profit organizations assisting in her local Jewish community and currently serves as a Business and Community Development Director in her town. Promises Made Promises Kept: The State of Hallandale Beach - Part IV By Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper June 6, 2024 Share Greetings readers. As I shared over the past weeks State of the City article, this is part four with the closing for next week. I do want to share that our City has been tackling many concerns and issues that you have brought to us over the year. We are currently working on this year's budget and this is a bit of a spoiler alert. We will be reducing the Tax Rate as planned and promised. I encourage everyone to follow our meeting. The final meeting before break will be on June 26th. We will be setting the tentative millage at that time. It has been awhile since we have held a community meeting for The eastside of our community. I will be hosting a Town Hall meeting on June 24th at the Cultural Center at 6:30 p.m. to go over flooding intivitives, project updates and other initives that are underway in our city. I along with staff will be available to answer all your questions and concerns. I hope you join in. Contiuned SOTC (In Speech Form) We heard and responded to complaints that our roads need resurfacing. As residents we also experience and are frustrated by the conditons. Last year we added a $1.5 Million Dollar infusion to the plan. There is one caveat to this project, we will not redo a road if it is slated for underground work. We are committed to not wasting taxpayer dollars. We have a schedule for this multi year project of all roads on our website. Promises made, Promises kept. Beach Renourishment in partnership with Broward County was also completed. We have returned to our gorgeous shore and are now fixing South Beach Park with new trees and shade systems. Promises made, promises kept. Last year, I shared another unplanned threat. The failure of many of our water meters. This was due to a manufacturing issue. Dr. Earle brought together a cross-departmental team to tackle this vital project. Obvivouly meters and their accuracy are vital for our customers to have faith and trust that they are getting what they are paying for. This project is facing challenges that include supply chain and staffing issues for not only installation of meters but the entire back office. Tomorrow as we hold our first budget workshop, Dr. Earle will be presenting a new approach to ensure we get the project completed. Like I said! We are really busy! But we are working on the plan! So Where are we going? The plan was so on point last year it was the first year we had a robust debate on changing course. 2023 Fiscal stability! Our Budget was balanced without the use of any reserves, Our reserves are well over $30,000. We budgeted over $80,000 Million Dollars to address Aging Infrastructure. Our staffing levels have increased even with the great resignation. This did not come without costs. We performed a classification and compensation study to become competitive with the marketplace. Finding employees for various departments is still a huge concern. Promises Made Promises Kept. WE have promised and continue to work for you and our number 1 priority remains your safety! Chief Michel has continued to fill positions with the hopes of having them all filled. Just last week two more officers were sworn in. Due to retirees, employees transferring and the gap between new hires there will be vacancies, but the Department is performing at a level well above any expectations. In addition, he has been tapping into our retired officers who can work part time. Their institutional knowledge is priceless. I for one pushed for a rehire policy years ago and I am incredibly happy we are not losing officers that know our City and residents and can help train new officers. BLT Lobster Roll Recipe courtesy of the Werner family of Island Lobster Co. on behalf of the Maine Lobster Marketing Collaborative Yield: 1 Roll • 3 Slices of Bacon • 1/4 Pound of Fresh Lobster Meat or Meat from 1-Pound Lobster • 1 Tablespoon of Butter • 1 Brioche Bun, halved • 1 Tablespoon of Mayonnaise • 3 Tomato Slices • 1 Large Leaf of Romaine Lettuce or Butter Lettuce Preheat the oven to 400 F. Line the baking sheet with parchment paper and arrange the Bacon Slices on top. Cook them for 10-15 minutes, or until desired crispiness. Prepare a large pot with 2 inches of Salted Water and bring it to a rolling boil. Add the Lobster and steam it for 12 minutes. Halfway through, lift the lid carefully and shift the Lobster to cook it evenly. Break down the Lobster and remove the meat from the shell, yielding about 4 Ounces of cooked meat. Chop the meat into bite-size pieces. In a large skillet or griddle over Medium Heat, warm the Butter to coat the pan. Place both pieces of the Bun cut sides down on a pan and cook them for about 30 seconds until they are golden. Remove the Buns from the pan and set them aside. In a bowl, toss the Chopped Lobster Meat with the Mayonnaise and set it aside. Assemble the Cooked Bacon, the Tomato, the Lettuce and the Lobster mix on the toasted Bun. After relocating to South Florida with his family, he was recruited to help establish operations at the newly formed Sunny Isles Beach Police Department. Initially assigned to the Uniform Patrol, Lieutenant Mulvey transitioned to the Criminal Investigations Unit in 2002, where he dedicated most of his career. In 2022, following the department's restructuring, he was appointed as the commander of the Strategic Services Division, overseeing the Traffic Motor Unit, Community Resources Unit, Marine Patrol Unit, and Ocean Rescue Lifeguard Unit. Lieutenant Mulvey studied Criminal Justice at Seton Hall University and Brookdale College in New Jersey. He is also an active member of the Miami Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police. Lieutenant Lee Athanasiou Lieutenant Lee Athanasiou joined the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department on July 20th, 1998, as one of its original officers. He began his law enforcement career with the Indian Creek Police Department in February 1997 after graduating from the police academy in Ocala, Florida. Throughout his 26-year career, Lieutenant Athanasiou has worked in and supervised various specialized units. He started as an officer assigned to Beach Patrol and Marine Patrol. After being promoted to Sergeant in 2003, he served as a midnight supervisor. In March 2012, he established the Community Policing Unit, overseeing beach/bike patrol, ocean rescue, school resource liaison, and the motor unit. He remained the Motor Unit Sergeant until 2021 when he returned to Road Patrol. In September 2022, he was promoted to Patrol Lieutenant, overseeing all daily patrol operations. Lieutenant Athanasiou has been one of the department’s Honor Guard coordinators since 2001 and has served as a department instructor since 2000, teaching firearms, taser, and patrol carbine. He also attended Miami-Dade County Police Department's Rapid Deployment Force (RDF) #10. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Florida International University. Lieutenant Ruben Zamora Lieutenant Ruben Zamora began his law enforcement career in 1994 as a Police Service Aide with the City of Hollywood Police Department. After graduating from the 178th Session of the Broward College Police Academy in 1996, he joined the Lauderhill Police Department as a Police Officer, where he served as a Patrol Officer and initiated a youth services program for the agency. In 1999, Lieutenant Zamora joined the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department. Over the years, he has served in various roles, including Patrol Officer, Motor Officer, Traffic Unit Supervisor, Field Training Officer, Regional Mobile Field Force member, Fleet Coordinator, and Training Unit Commander. His dedication and expertise led to his promotion to Corporal in 2010, and then to Sergeant in 2013 while overseeing the Training Unit. Lieutenant Zamora is a highly skilled instructor, Certified by FDLE as a Firearms Instructor, ASP Instructor, Chemical Agents Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Active Shooter Instructor (FLETC), and TASER Instructor. In May 2023, Zamora was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration and is a graduate of the 84th Command Officer’s Development Course and the FBI-NA Florida Executive Development Course. Lieutenant Melissa Porro Lieutenant Melissa Porro joined the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department in June 2000 as a Police Trainee and attended the Miami-Dade Police Academy. After graduating, she was sworn in as a Police Officer in November 2000. Lieutenant Porro began her career in the Patrol Division, serving as a Road Patrol Officer, Beach Patrol Special Operations Officer, Field Training Officer, and in-house CPR/AED Trainer. She was promoted to Corporal in 2008 and to Sergeant in 2015. As a Sergeant, she served in both the Patrol and Administrative Divisions before being promoted to Lieutenant in July 2024. Currently, Lieutenant Porro is assigned to the Administrative Division, overseeing the Communications and Training Units and the Public Information Office. She also manages fleet operations, pre-employment background investigations, and the quartermaster duties. Howell began his career in 1995 by self-sponsoring himself through the Broward County Police Academy’s 175th Session. In 1998, Lieutenant Howell joined the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department and is one of the original founding members of the agency. He has served the agency in the capacity of a Road Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, and as a Detective. In 2000, Lieutenant Howell was assigned to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Transnational Organized Crime Task Force where he spent sixteen years contributing to countless indictments of organized crime figures. In 2017, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal where he served as a Road Patrol supervisor until he was transferred to the Administrative Division in 2018. In 2022, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in the Administrative Division overseeing the Accreditation Unit, the Property and Evidence Unit, and the Records Unit and in 2024, Lieutenant Howell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in charge of Professional Compliance, Ethics, the Accreditation Unit, the Property and Evidence Unit, and the Records Unit. Lieutenant Howell holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and is a graduate of the University of Louisville's Southern Police Institute 95th Command Officer’s Development Course. Lieutenant Javier Estevez Lieutenant Javier Estevez graduated from the Miami Dade College Police Academy in 2001 and began his law enforcement career with the Village of Pinecrest Police Department as a Road Patrol Officer. In 2002, he joined the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department, where he served in the Patrol Division. Early in his career, Lieutenant Estevez developed a strong passion for traffic enforcement and crash investigations, which led him to join the Traffic Motor Unit in 2004. He has since completed over 200 hours of traffic homicide investigation courses and became a certified police motorcycle instructor, teaching alongside the Broward Sheriff’s Office Motor Unit. Lieutenant Estevez has also actively participated in multiple police motorcycle rodeos—charitable competitions between local police departments. In 2018, after over 15 years in the Traffic Motor Unit, Lieutenant Estevez was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He now oversees the Criminal Investigations Division (CID), managing six detectives and all criminal investigations for the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department. He and his unit also participate in several task forces across the tri-county area, engaging in proactive investigations when called upon. Attention Hollywood Residents: Annual Waterline Flushing to Begin, Along With Truck-Mounted Mosquito Spraying July 7, 2022 Share The City of Hollywood Department of Public Utilities will begin its Annual Free Chlorine Line Flushing Program on Monday, July 11th, 2022. The Free Chlorine Portion of this Program will end on Monday, August 15th, 2022. The Water Distribution System Line Flushing may continue across the City for an additional two weeks to achieve Optimal System Maintenance through Thursday, August 25th, 2022 if necessary. The Annual Flushing Program is used to help rid the Water Distribution Pipelines of any Accumulated Sediments. The Hydrant Flushing may temporarily cause Cloudy or Discolored Water, which should settle and clear in a few hours after flushing. The cloudiness is due to the Sediments in the Pipelines and it is not Harmful or Hazardous. Typically, Flushing will take place in the evening hours between 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. when the demand for Water is low. During the Water Line Flushing Period, the Water Treatment Plant will temporarily change its Method of Disinfection from Chloramines to Free Chlorination. Residents may notice a change in the taste and odor of the Water during this time. The City will discontinue Free Chlorination as of Monday, August 15th, 2022. Owners and Managers of Businesses with Fish and Shellfish Holding Tanks and users of Kidney Dialysis Machines are advised that Regular Methods for Testing and Removing Free Chlorine will not be effective during the remainder of the Flushing Period. The Larvicide being used is VectoBac WDG. This Product is not Harmful to Humans, Pets, Bees, Aquatic Habitats or Environmentally Sensitive Areas. The Active Ingredient is Bacillus Thuringiensis Israelensis (Bti, Strain AM6552), a Naturally Occurring, Biodegradable Bacterial Mosquito Larvicide. It is certified by the Organic Materials Review Institute and is Registered for Use by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. In addition, VectoBac WDG has been reviewed by the World Health Organization and is listed as a Recommended Formulation for the Control of Mosquito Larvae. In Honor Of Hollywood’s Centennial, The Parade Will Feature A “Journey Through The Decades” Theme That Brings A Century Of Style, Music And Holiday Spirit To Life. For The First Time Ever, The Parade Will Also Be Broadcast Live On Local 10 & There Will Be A Live Concert At The Band Shell Post-Parade! The parade starts off at Missouri Street and travels south along the Broadwalk, passing the parade emcee at the Hollywood Beach Theatre on Johnson Street, before ending at Harrison Street.
