- 5 Ways Older Adults Can Exercise In The Heat Like a Senior Athlete
5 Ways Older Adults Can Exercise In The Heat Like a Senior Athlete By BPT November 2, 2023 Share It's vital to stay active as you age, but how can you keep working toward your fitness goals during the sweltering heat? Exercising outdoors as the temps - and humidity - climb may be not only uncomfortable but can risk conditions like Heat Stroke and Heat Exhaustion. If you're beginning any exercise program, it's also best to check with your healthcare provider first. Before heading out for a brisk power walk or a lively game of Pickleball here are a few suggestions by Andi Kwapien, a SilverSneakers National Trainer who taught SilverSneakers classes from this year's National Senior Games. Andi offers tips that hold true whether you're a competitive athlete or just staying active for your overall health. 1. Be informed When planning outdoor activities, make sure to check the weather. Your local news station or the National Weather Service can help you decide if it's a good day to spend outside. Check not only the temperature and humidity but also the air quality where you live. If there are signs it could be hazardous for you to spend much time in the great outdoors, consider an indoor alternative. 2. Pace yourself Fitness experts advise warming up and cooling down before and after a workout. Start at a slower pace at first, then cool down gradually a few minutes before you end your session, followed by gentle stretching. Choose activities that are easy to do anywhere and that you can adjust to your own pace, such as walking, or that require less strenuous exertion and strength while keeping you active and cool, such as water exercises. Know your limits and listen to your body's signals. According to the Mayo Clinic, it can take time for your body to get used to the heat, so start nice and easy, and lower your expectations for how long and hard you exercise. Take breaks, especially if you feel overheated, lightheaded or out of breath. 3. Try an organized exercise program Getting involved in a fitness program provides many benefits, including expert advice and instruction, plus opportunities to enjoy the Social and Mental Health Benefits of Fitness. For example, SilverSneakers® by Tivity Health® is a health and fitness program for adults 65+ and is included for free in many Medicare Advantage Plans. It includes live, online fitness classes, on-demand videos and access to a network of up to 22,000 fitness locations nationwide, including community fitness locations. SilverSneakers sponsored the 2023 National Senior Games in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. SilverSneakers has 18 million eligible members nationwide, and supports physical activity for all fitness levels, from beginners to seasoned athletes. The National Senior Games in 2025 will be hosted in Greater Des Moines in 2025. To get involved in the next National Senior Games, visit: https://nsga.com/how-to-get-involved/ As a member of SilverSneakers, you can access multiple locations, and use the SilverSneakers GO mobile app to be active wherever and whenever you choose to work out. Learn more at: www.SilverSneakersLetsGo.com 4. Stay hydrated Always keep water or beverages containing electrolytes (like sports drinks) nearby anytime you're working out, especially out in the heat. Take sips often, even before you feel thirsty, to help you regulate your temperature and replace moisture lost through sweating. The American Heart Association recommends drinking before, during and after your workout to help prevent health problems that could be exacerbated by dehydration. 5. Prepare for heat and sun The Mayo Clinic also recommends taking other precautions outdoors in the heat, like wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and avoiding exertion during the hottest time of day (from around noon through 3 p.m.) To avoid too much sun exposure, stay in the shade when possible, wear a wide-brimmed hat and apply sunscreen. You may need to reapply it after swimming or sweating. Using these tips should help you stay active even when it's hot outside. Commonsense measures can help you enjoy your favorite activities, no matter what the weather. < Previous News Next News >

- Awareness Is Key: 3 Steps To Help Recognize Stroke Signs And Risks For Better Outcomes | sun-times
Awareness Is Key: 3 Steps To Help Recognize Stroke Signs And Risks For Better Outcomes By Feature Impact May 21, 2026 A Stroke Can Happen To Anyone At Any Age. In Fact, Every 40 Seconds Someone In The United States Has A Stroke, With Approximately 800,000 People Experiencing A Stroke Annually, According To The American Heart Association, Making It A Leading Cause Of Death And Serious, Long-Term Disability. A Stroke happens when normal blood flow in the brain is interrupted. When parts of the brain don’t get the oxygen-rich blood they need, those cells die. However, many Strokes may be prevented, treated and overcome by understanding the risk factors and taking steps toward managing them. “When a Stroke happens, every minute matters,” said Dr. Adrian Jaquin-Valdivia, a Stroke Neurologist at HCA Healthcare and American Stroke Association volunteer expert. “The faster someone gets treatment, the better the chance of saving Brain Function. On average, nearly 2 million brain cells die every minute a Stroke goes untreated. Early treatment improves survival rates and reduces disability.” Take control of your brain health with this information from the American Stroke Association. Know the Warning Signs Because Strokes do not discriminate, knowing the signs is key. To help you recognize common warning signs and symptoms of stroke and take action in moments that matter, remember this simple acronym: B.E. F.A.S.T. B: Balance loss – sudden difficulty with walking, dizziness or loss of balance or coordination. E: Eye (or vision) changes – sudden vision loss or trouble seeing in one or both eyes. F: Face drooping – one side of the face droops or feels numb; a smile may look uneven. A: Arm weakness – one arm feels weak or numb or drifts downward when raised. S: Speech difficulty – a telltale sign of a stroke is slurred speech or trouble speaking. T: Time to call 911 – If someone is having any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call emergency services immediately to jumpstart care. Be sure to check the time so you'll know when the first symptoms started. Explore the signs by playing the interactive, web-based B.E. F.A.S.T. Experience to see what Stroke symptoms may look, feel and sound like. Take Steps to Protect Your Health Approximately 80% of Strokes are preventable, according to the American Stroke Association. Everyday choices – such as eating well, moving more, not smoking and keeping up with routine health screenings, along with managing risk factors with the support of a health care professional – can help lower Stroke risk. Manage Risk Factors High Blood Pressure is the leading risk factor for Stroke, according to the 2025 American Heart Association/ACC Guideline for the Management of High Blood Pressure in Adults. Controlling Blood Pressure through regular checkups, at-home monitoring, following your treatment plan and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce your risk of Stroke and support overall brain health. Additionally, having a Stroke or a Mini-Stroke, known as a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), increases the chances of having a second one. That’s why identifying what caused your Stroke and reducing your personal risk factors can help protect your health and reduce the risk of another Stroke. To learn more about Stroke risk factors and better understand the warning signs, visit: www.Stroke.org/StrokeMonth , where you can also access stroke support services and subscribe to the Stroke Connection e-newsletter for the latest resources. - Ellie’s Army Foundation: Dirty Socks 5K Run And Walkathon To Benefit Children And Young Adults
Ellie’s Army Foundation: Dirty Socks 5K Run And Walkathon To Benefit Children And Young Adults February 21, 2024 Share Ellie Levy’s life was about teaching everyone about compassion and caring - while suffering from Cystic Fibrosis (CF), a terminal genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs. What Ellie and her family saw, from the beginning, were people hurting - and it affected all of them in a way that many of us could ever understand. During Ellie’s many hospitalizations, Stacey and Brian Levy began to meet far too many parents struggling to keep their children alive due to limited financial resources. This is something that many in this nation never have the chance to see - and convey it to those who may one day do something about a parent who can’t afford to pay for life-saving medications because they have no money for copayments, or for crucial nutritional supplements or necessary therapies, because they were not covered by insurance. Parents should not have to choose between keeping their child alive and paying their Electric or Mortgage/Rent Bills. So, in 2001, in response to what they saw and watched others endure, the Levy’s created the Reach for the Stars Foundation in 2001 to benefit individuals with CF. Fourteen years later, in March of 2014, Ellie was 22 years old and suffering from the end stages of Cystic Fibrosis. She received a Double-Lung Transplant, but within a week, her new lungs were failing and she was re-listed for another set of lungs. Against all odds, she endured a second transplant on April 15th. During her recovery, Ellie met another young woman who also needed a Lung Transplant, but was unable to meet the financial criteria to be accepted into the Transplant Program. At that moment, Ellie decided that when she was well, she would focus her efforts on providing other young people with the money necessary to stay alive. Sadly, on November 5th, 2014, Ellie Levy passed away. In her honor, the memory of Ellie Levy indeed lives on - as her foundation name was changed to Ellie’s Army Foundation in 2017. The foundation has expanded its mission to assist not only those afflicted with Cystic Fibrosis, but children and young adults suffering from all critical illnesses. Why Dirty Socks? The inspiration behind the “Dirty Socks” event was Ellie’s surgeon (Gustavo), who told her in order to survive her Lung Transplant, she would have to walk. Despite the pain, Ellie walked and walked and walked, often exceeding her surgeon’s expectations - and to prove her hard work, Gustavo wanted to see the bottom of her socks. If they were dirty, she was doing what was told. So, despite the pain, Ellie walked and walked and walked. She was a Warrior! “Ellie gave her surgeon a bag with her dirty socks in it. He said that he will keep her socks in his office for the rest of his life. Ellie inspired him with her determination, her desire to live and her fight.” All children in the hospital wear medical socks and must walk to get well. Sometimes they can only take a few steps. At the Dirty Socks 5K Run & Walkathon we walk for them. We walk for Ellie. By taking part in the Dirty Socks 5K & Walkathon, you are walking for those who fight the fight every day - and paying tribute to Ellie Levy, who helped to bring awareness to a disease that many knew nothing about. Ellie’s Army Foundation is hosting the Dirty Socks 5K Run & Walkathon to benefit children and young adults battling life-threatening illnesses. The Foundation provides financial resources for families of children and young adults battling life-threatening illnesses. Ellie’s Army Foundation helps pay for medical expenses, insurance copayments, therapies, or daily living expenses such as housing payments, energy costs, utility bills, etc. Now more than ever these families are struggling. Be a Warrior, come get your socks dirty! For more information, visit: www.Elliesarmy.org - Or: www.Dirtysocks.org < Previous News Next News >

- Cannabis Straight Talk from Miracle Leaf
Cannabis Straight Talk from Miracle Leaf PROFILES April 24, 2022 Share The annual National Cannabis Day, which is observed on, April 20 has just passed and Geo Tejada of the Miracle Leaf Cannabis Health Center in Hallandale Beach seeks to set the record straight on his products. “There’s a lot of confusion about Cannabis,” he says. “People want to know why they should consider the use of Cannabis. Where can they buy these products? Is Cannabis legal in Florida? Do people need a license to buy it? How can Cannabis products be used?” Tejada explains that Cannabis products come from the Cannabis Sativa Plant, a widely cultivated crop around the world. “It exists in multiple varieties,” he says. THC Vs. CBD Some varieties of Cannabis have Psychoactive Properties that produce a euphoric reaction. They contain a relatively high concentration of a substance called Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The common name for such varieties is Marijuana. Florida Law allows the use of “Medical Marijuana” that is high in THC for certain qualifying conditions, including: Cancer, Crohn’s Disease, Epilepsy, Glaucoma, HIV-AIDS, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Patients must obtain a Medical Marijuana Card and a recommendation from a Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine who have taken a course and passed an exam to receive certification as a Marijuana Physician. Upon being approved, patients join a registry and receive a Medical Marijuana Card. Then they may purchase their recommended THC Products from a Dispensary Licensed by the State. “Today,” Tejada says, “over 500,000 patients are registered in Florida.” The rules are different for other varieties of Cannabis, known as Hemp, that contain only trace amounts of THC. During World War II, the U.S. Government used Hemp to make canvas, rope and uniforms. Today it is a source of products as diverse as biofuel, cement, cosmetics, clothing, insulation, paper and textiles. “Hemp became a Federally Approved Crop under the 2018 Farm Bill and all of our products are Hemp-Based,” Tejada says. “Their primary substance, Cannabidiol (CBD), lacks euphoric properties but still can alleviate symptoms of anxiety, pain and stress associated with a variety of medical conditions. “You don’t need a Medical Marijuana Card and a Recommendation to buy the products we sell at Health Centers such as Miracle Leaf,” he emphasizes. To Smoke Or Not The discussion of Cannabis typically revolves around smoking the flowers, but that’s not the only way to use Cannabis Products. Hemp-Based CBD Products in particular have blossomed (pun intended) in recent years, offering a wide variety of consumption alternatives. Tejada lists Sublingual Tinctures (drops of liquid under the tongue), “Vapes” for inhalation, Edible Gummies and Topical Pain-relief Creams that are popular with the elderly. Cannabis also is a major ingredient in Alice B. Toklas’ Brownies. Alice was the life-mate of Author Gertrude Stein, who reigned over the Parisian Literary Scene between the two World Wars. Google “Alice B. Toklas’ Brownies” to find thousands of entries about this confection. If you make these brownies with Marijuana, limit consumption and beware of the unintended side effects. Hemp is kinder and gentler in this regard. Tejada says his Miracle Leaf store in Hallandale Beach has over 2,000 regular customers. Some are Tobacco smokers who view Miracle Leaf’s CBD Products as a desirable alternative, while others use CBD Products while waiting for their medical Marijuana Cards and Recommendations. “We’re not a Medical Marijuana Dispensary,” he emphasizes, “but we do have Certified Marijuana Physicians on staff to provide assistance to people who come in with specific medical needs. “Most of our customers are older than 45. Cannabis is not just for the young. The elderly have been able to connect with the use of Cannabis. We can’t make medical claims for a cure, but we have been able to help many patients with medical conditions to alleviate their symptoms.” For Fido and Tabby Many pet owners give CBD Products to their dogs and cats, Tejada says. Signs your Canine and Feline friends may benefit from CBD include Arthritis and other Inflammatory Ailments, Chronic Pain, Digestive Tract Upsets, Kidney and Liver Ailments, Separation Anxiety when you leave home and the fear of thunder and other loud noises. Also, while it’s not a cure, CBD may prolong and improve the quality of life for elderly Dogs and Cats with Cancer and other Terminal Conditions. CBD Products sold specifically for Pets include Capsules and Chews, Peanut Butter, Tinctures, Treats and Topical Preparations such as shampoos and balms. Resist the temptation to give your Pets the same products you use, Tejada advises. Look for products specifically formulated and lab tested for Pets and Organically Sourced, which mean they come from Pesticide-FREE Hemp Plants. Dosage depends on your Pet’s size, weight and individual body chemistry. While product packaging and your Veterinarian may offer guidelines, every Pet is different, so start slowly and work up to an Optimal Dosage. National Cannabis Day National Cannabis Day originated with five California high school students who met at 4:20 p.m. on April 20th, 1971, to smoke Marijuana. Today it’s an International Counter-Culture Holiday and an opportunity for the Cannabis Industry to showcase its products and services. “The Industry gives back to the community with big promotions and sales,” Tejada says, adding that Miracle Leaf always participates in the observance in a big way. - How Much Are You Carrying? Constant Worrying Is Deleterious To Your Mental And Physical Wellbeing
How Much Are You Carrying? Constant Worrying Is Deleterious To Your Mental And Physical Wellbeing By Bryan Golden May 11, 2023 Share You wouldn’t be able to lift a 55 gallon drum filled with water. Although you could easily pick up a cleaning bucket filled with water, you wouldn’t want to hold it for a long time. If you tried, it would feel as if it were getting heavier rather quickly. Holding a cup filled with water is a cinch. Anyone can do it. But how long can you hold it for? The longer it’s held, the heavier it seems. At some point in time, you would need to put it down. Just as a seemingly light object becomes heavier the longer it’s held, so do the burdens you carry around with you on a constant basis. An issue that initially appears minor grows in significance the longer you hold onto it. The weight increases steadily as you clutch onto numerous concerns. You become bogged down even faster with the cumulative mass of your collected burdens. Your Stress level rises while your energy and enthusiasm drops. Because the progression is gradual, it’s not readily noticeable until it starts to become overwhelming. Every time you pick up a minor burden it appears to be no big deal. It gets added to your load without much thought. Since the mental weight increases gradually, you adjust to it and incrementally adjust to the growing load. Each issue alone may be relatively insignificant. Even though you may not be consciously aware of its presence, you are still affected subconsciously. Since the weight you are carrying rises so gradually, you accept the increasing burden as normal and tolerable. As such, you don’t readily perceive the incremental additions to your stress level. Although you may feel anxious, more irritable, less energetic and less patient, there is no one obvious culprit you can identify. This fact further compounds your frustration. Over time, you forget exactly why you are carrying many of the burdens. The details fade, leaving behind only emotions or bad feelings. You become weighed down by accumulated Mental Debris that is no longer identifiable. Worry makes things worse. It intensifies whatever you are carrying. Worrying drains your energy without accomplishing a thing. Worry doesn’t help you in any way. There is not one good reason to accumulate Mental Issues. It’s a bad habit that needs to be corrected as soon as possible. In order to accomplish this, you must change your approach. Let’s consider an alternative scenario. Each time you pick up a small burden you let it go rather than carrying it. It’s that simple. With this approach your burden never grows. This works because there’s no point dragging problems around with you. Here’s how you deal with new issues. For each, ask yourself the following questions: Does this really matter? If not, let it go. Is this worth my energy? If not, let it go. Do I have any control over the issue? If not, let it go. If yes, take the appropriate action and then let it go. Also, stop worrying. It’s OK to be concerned and take action when and where appropriate. When you let your burdens drop, it’s easier to release the accompanying worries as well. Constant worrying is deleterious to your Mental and Physical Wellbeing. Furthermore, it causes you to hang onto those very things you should be letting go of. Stay vigilant. Be aware of what you are picking up. It’s too easy to revert back to your old pattern. As you empty your Mental load you’ll feel lighter. You will quickly realize how pointless it is to pick things up in the first place. Bryan is the Author of "Dare to Live Without Limits." Contact Bryan at: Bryan@columnist.com .
