Why Is My Water Not Working? City Of Hallandale Beach Infrastructure Is In The Spotlight By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper January 31, 2024 Share I have received many emails about water being turned off and why it is happening. The readers that follow my weekly column will remember the articles I have written over the past year about Infrastructure. I actually dubbed this year as “The Year of the Shovel.” Our city is over 95 years old. Just like many other eastern cities our underground pipes have aged and need replacement. Our team has found pipes as old as 50 plus years well over their useful life. These conditions have been put off due to lack of strong leadership and management making the necessary changes to budget taxes and fees. I along with our current commission, Vice Mayor Annabelle Taub, Commissioners Joy Adams, Mike Butler and Michele Lazarow and City Manager have declared not on our watch. The water main breaks over the years have been very disruptive to our residents and businesses alike. Our Department of Public Works has an amazing team that makes repairs 7/24/365. In many cases leaks are contained and repaired within hours. Water pressure and service is resumed immediately but often requires a boiling water notice. The potable water needs to pass a water quality test twice in a row to be cleared for human consumption. This means not drinking, brushing teeth, hand washing and dishes unless the water is boiled. For our customer's assurance our water is continually tested and must pass rigid water quality standards. Currently, the Staff has been replacing many of our valves that provide shut offs. The most recent planned repairs impacted all condominiums along Diplomat Parkway, Three Islands and A1A as there were two replacements and one main repair. The valves are in place to provide the ability to manage water flows and in case of construction on main line or to building. In an emergency repair the process would be the same as a line break repair. Pressure would be reduced, and the repair could be complete. Planned repairs are scheduled and take place at night when there is less demand and impacts. When there are breaks and planned shut offs condominiums are impacted differently than homes. The reduced water pressure has a direct impact on large pumps and HVAC systems in large condominiums. Many have protective shut offs and some do not. Our Staff coordinates with Condominium Managers and Presidents to warn them when the system will be impacted. In the case of an emergency, it is not that easy. The goal is always prompt communications but there will always be some lapses. Obviously if it is an emergency repair they alert the condominium but often do the repairs without a community wide email or alerts. They will follow up with alerts via Email, Text and Social Media about the repairs and if a boil water notice is necessary. I also remind residents to sign up for our notifications at: www.cohb.org Our Staff has been scheduling planned shut offs during the hours of 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. This time is already a low consumption time. We will be going through many projects in the coming year and the years forward. Please pardon the dust disruption and inconvenience but these are vital replacements and upgrades to provide water and wastewater services for years to come. Online Antisemitism Targets All Three Key Finalists In New York Mayoral Race As 'Jewish Puppets,' Cyberwell Report Finds Jewish Connection News Nov 20, 2025 As The Polls Closed In New York City's 2025 Mayoral Election, Cyberwell, A Nonprofit Dedicated To Monitoring And Combating Online Antisemitism And A Trusted Flagger For Meta: Facebook, Instagram And Threads, Youtube And Tiktok, Released New Research Revealing Widespread Antisemitic Content Circulating During The Race. The report found that all three mayoral hopefuls—Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani, Independent candidate Andrew Cuomo and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa—were targeted online with antisemitic conspiracy theories portraying them as “puppets” of Jewish or “Zionist” interests. CyberWell’s analysis found that these antisemitic narratives circulating during the New York City mayoral race closely mirrored trends observed in recent national elections in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. The dominant narrative across all elections falsely accused Jews or “Zionists” of secretly controlling candidates, manipulating governments, and rigging elections—claims that align with the second example of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism. Other common narratives included classic antisemitic tropes and imagery such as the “happy merchant” and blood-libel accusations, which also align with IHRA’s second category of antisemitism. Additional narratives reflected Israel-related antisemitism consistent with the seventh and ninth examples of the working definition, including posts asserting that Israel has no right to exist and depictions employing classic antisemitism toward Israelis. Imagery depicting blood libel conspiracies used to demonize Jews by platform users was sometimes enhanced with AI-generated content combining racist caricatures and antisemitic symbols to suggest political manipulation. Collectively, these narratives were widely amplified online, underscoring the persistence and adaptability of conspiratorial antisemitic tropes in digital spaces. Although the verified dataset contained only dozens of examples, the content nonetheless amassed more than 200,000 total views across major platforms— for context, NYC’s population is approximately 8.5 million, demonstrating its disproportionate reach and potential impact during the elections period. Despite existing hate speech policies, platform enforcement during the New York City mayoral election was inconsistent. X (formerly Twitter) hosted the largest volume of antisemitic posts with few removals, reflecting a permissive stance toward extreme election-related content. While TikTok, X and Meta maintain election integrity policies, none explicitly address election-related hate speech—a gap that may contribute to uneven moderation. In contrast, YouTube’s explicit policy guidance against election-related hate speech aligned with CyberWell’s findings, which identified no violative election-related content on the platform ahead of the NYC mayoral race. “Accusations portraying Jews as controlling political figures transcend both party lines and national borders,” said CyberWell Founder and CEO Tal-Or Cohen Montemayor. “Our research consistently shows that antisemitic conspiracies targeting minority groups surge during politically sensitive periods, yet enforcement of policy remains inconsistent across Social Media platforms. The online narratives related to the New York City mayoral race trends consistently with patterns we saw in the recent United States federal elections, as well as elections in the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, demonstrating the global scale and alignment of conspiracies against a common target and scapegoat during free elections—the Jewish people.” CyberWell is calling on platforms to strengthen their response to election-related antisemitism. City Of Sunny Isles Beach Community Spotlight: Zahra Ronizi May 9, 2024 Share Sunny Isles Beach resident Zahra Ronizi has embarked on an impressive journey towards becoming an astronaut, showcasing a stellar commitment to her goals. As an 18-year-old high school senior, she has already interned at NASA and served as a Crew Biologist at Astroland Interplanetary Agency in Spain, contributing to Mars Mission Simulations. As she is set to attend Harvard next school year, Zahra is leaving a lasting impact on the future of space exploration. Zahra’s passion for space was ignited at the age of five during an unexpected detour on a trip to Disney World in Orlando. “My dad accidentally took the wrong exit off I-95 and the exit led to Merritt Island, which is where the Kennedy Space Center is located,” she recalled. That detour changed her life forever. “It was really there when I saw all of the awesome photos of space and the planets,” Zahra said. “It was really then that I wanted to be an astronaut and eventually go to Mars one day.” Since then, her dedication to space and science has only grown, fueled by an appetite for books written by astronauts and astrophysicists, as well as watching space documentaries and movies. Driven by a desire to specialize in Space Medicine, Zahra was intrigued by the science of protecting astronauts and the human body in space. She began researching how to do surgery in outer space. “We don’t have technologies to do surgery in space,” she explained. “I got my scuba diving certification and bought a little [suture] kit that surgeons practice on, and I went underwater inside a pool to resemble the weightlessness and free flow that astronauts experience in space, and I started doing little lines of sutures and timing myself.” This research opened doors, allowing her to participate in programs many only dream of, such as living in a cave to simulate a mission to Mars for the Analog Astronaut Mission in Spain. “I was living with a crew of five women from all across Europe inside a cave for a week, it was extreme cold,” she said. “It was a very challenging experience, especially for me, coming from warm Sunny Isles Beach.” During the mission, Zahra and her team conducted sampling missions, with her task being to take biological samples using techniques that would be used to search for signs of life on Mars. Despite encountering challenges including equipment malfunctions and dangerous situations, Zahra’s leadership and quick thinking ensured her team’s safety. “We made it back safely and our mission was successful,” she said. After her transformative experience, Zahra aimed to inspire other children to pursue space exploration. She organized a NASA Astronaut event for kids in Sunny Isles Beach in May of 2023, offering a live Q&A session and the opportunity to watch Axiom Ax-2 Mission Pilot and Astronaut, John Shoffner in space. “They got to see him do flips in the air and ask him questions,” said Zahra. This event was part of Zahra’s Odyssey Scholarship Program, which she started in the ninth grade to support underserved students and address the lack of diversity in space-related fields. “I wanted to see other students be able to pursue these opportunities as well,” she said. Ellie’s Army Foundation: 4th Annual Dirty Socks 5K Run & Walkathon To Benefit Children and Young Adults February 17, 2022 Share Ellie Levy’s life was about teaching everyone about compassion and caring - while suffering from cystic fibrosis (CF), a terminal genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs. What Ellie and her family saw, from the beginning, were people hurting - and it affected all of them in a way that many of us could ever understand. During Ellie’s many hospitalizations, Stacey and Brian Levy began to meet far too many parents struggling to keep their children alive due to limited financial resources. This is something that many in this nation never have the chance to see - and convey it to those who may one day do something about a parent who can’t afford to pay for life-saving medications because they have no money for copayments, or for crucial nutritional supplements or necessary therapies, because they were not covered by insurance. Parents should not have to choose between keeping their child alive and paying their electric or mortgage/rent bills. So, in 2001, in response to what they saw and watch others endure, the Levy’s created the Reach for the Stars Foundation in 2001 to benefit individuals with CF. Fourteen years later, in March of 2014, Ellie was 22 years old and suffering from the end stages of cystic fibrosis. She received a double-lung transplant, but within a week, her new lungs were failing and she was re-listed for another set of lungs. Against all odds, she endured a second transplant on April 15th. During her recovery, Ellie met another young woman who also needed a lung transplant, but was unable to meet the financial criteria to be accepted into the transplant program. In that moment, Ellie decided that when she was well, she would focus her efforts on providing other young people with the monies necessary to stay alive. Sadly, on November 5th, 2014, Ellie Levy passed away. In her honor, the memory of Ellie Levy indeed lives on - as her foundation name was changed to Ellie’s Army Foundation in 2017. The foundation has expanded its mission to assist not only those afflicted with cystic fibrosis, but children and young adults suffering from all critical illnesses. The inspiration behind the “Dirty Socks” event was Ellie’s surgeon (Gustavo), who told her in order to survive her lung transplant, she would have to walk. Despite the pain, Ellie walked and walked and walked, often exceeding her surgeon’s expectations - and to prove her hard work, Gustavo wanted to see the bottom of her socks. If they were dirty, she was doing what was told. So, despite the pain, Ellie walked and walked and walked. She was a Warrior! “Ellie gave her surgeon a bag with her dirty socks in it. He said that he will keep her socks in his office for the rest of his life. Ellie inspired him with her determination, her desire to live and her fight.” All children in the hospital wear medical socks and must walk to get well. Sometimes they can only take a few steps. At the Dirty Socks 5K Run & Walkathon we walk for them. We walk for Ellie. By taking part in the Dirty Socks 5K & Walkathon, you are walking for those who fight the fight every day - and paying tribute to Ellie Levy, who helped to bring awareness to a disease that many knew nothing about. Ellie’s Army Foundation is hosting its 4th Annual Dirty Socks 5K Run & Walkathon to benefit children and young adults battling life-threatening illnesses. This year the race will once again be held both Virtually and In-Person.
