FIU Celebrates The Legacy Of Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen With The Launch Of Fellowship Program Aventura Digest Aug 12, 2025 Over The Past Couple Of Weeks, Florida International University (FIU) Launched The Ileana Ros-Lehtinen Legacy Project And Fellowship Program, A Multifaceted Initiative Designed To Preserve The Historic Contributions Of Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen And Influence The Next Generation Of Civic Leaders. Ros-Lehtinen, a two-time FIU alumna, shattered barriers throughout her career, becoming the first Hispanic woman elected to the Florida House of Representatives, the Florida Senate, and the U.S. Congress. She also made history as the first woman and the first Hispanic to chair the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and the first woman to lead any standing committee in the House of Representatives—all while being the first FIU graduate ever elected to Congress. Her legacy includes championing human rights globally, launching the Florida Prepaid College Program, advocating for Everglades restoration and Miami River revitalization, and securing key research opportunities for FIU, including the Aquarius Reef Base. “Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen represents the very best of public service—principled, fearless and deeply committed to human rights, education and opportunity,” said FIU President Jeanette M. Nuñez. “We are proud to ensure her legacy lives on through the students who will be a part of this fellowship program.” Central to the project is an extensive archival collection that captures Ros-Lehtinen’s decades-long career in public service and her role in shaping U.S. foreign policy. The collection includes hundreds of photographs with U.S. presidents, world leaders, and dignitaries; historic news articles and legislative records; and rare political items such as Air Force One manifests, White House briefing documents, and menus from state dinners. Among the most notable artifacts is the pen used by President Bill Clinton in 1996 to sign the Helms-Burton Act, a law that tightened U.S. sanctions against the Cuban government and reinforced American opposition to foreign investment in Cuba, symbolizing Ros-Lehtinen’s influence on landmark legislation. The archive will be curated by graduate FIU history students, who will organize the materials into a permanent exhibit and digital archive as part of the American 250 Commemoration, the nationwide celebration of the United States’ 250th Anniversary in 2026. This effort ensures that Ros-Lehtinen’s remarkable history is preserved and accessible for generations to come. “It is humbling to see my journey preserved and used to inspire future leaders,” said Ros-Lehtinen. “FIU opened doors for me and gave me the foundation to serve. This project is my way of giving back—ensuring that students have the same opportunities to make a difference for their communities and our nation.” The Ros-Lehtinen Fellowship Program, anchored at FIU in Washington, D.C., will provide FIU students with unmatched opportunities to engage in public service. Program components include: • Semester-long, paid congressional internships in bipartisan offices on Capitol Hill • Quarterly leadership seminars at FIU in D.C., featuring policymakers and experts • The first cohort of fellows includes Ame Campbell and Mikele Mancuso, who are majoring in international relations, and Diana Angel, a political science major. Each student will receive a stipend and a direct placement in a congressional office, offering valuable, hands-on experience in policymaking at the heart of the nation’s capital. FIU in Washington, D.C. is a hub for policy engagement and leadership development. It offers students access to policymakers, think tanks, and national institutions, while serving as a venue for research, residencies, and public policy forums. - The Swinging Soul & Sultry Sounds Of Runway 84 Acclaimed Restaurant Now Home To One Of The Most Electric Live Music Scenes In Fort Lauderdale | sun-times
The Swinging Soul & Sultry Sounds Of Runway 84 Acclaimed Restaurant Now Home To One Of The Most Electric Live Music Scenes In Fort Lauderdale South Florida Sun Times Mar 20, 2025 Inarguably, Anthony’s Runway 84 Is An Iconic Florida Eatery And One Of The Sunshine State’s Most Successful Restaurants, Clocking In Over 40 Years In Fort Lauderdale; Whether It’s For The Buzzing Bar Scene (Where A Perfectly Made Dirty Martini Is Always A Good Idea) Or Its Expertly-Crafted Italian-American Comfort Food, Runway 84 Never Disappoints. Its Hallowed Place In The Restaurant Marketplace Is A Matter Of Fact. But What Many Might Not Realize Is That Runway 84 Is One Of Fort Lauderdale’s Preeminent Destinations For Live Music. How did this come to be? In 2022, the restaurant closed for a multi-million-dollar renovation and refresh, resulting in a January 2023 launch that signaled a new era for the beloved restaurant. In its new incarnation, it embodies a modern-day Italian supper club, serving up just as much Copacabana vibes as it does its signature cauliflower rigatoni. Performing nightly, the house band takes the stage with a rotating array of singers, dishing out everything from Rat Pack favorites to R&B classics, favorites from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, Soul and more. In fact, it’s not out of the ordinary for a swinging version of an Old Blue Eyes American songbook staple to segue into a Reverend Al Green cut or a swooning Barry White ballad. “When we envisioned the ‘new’ Runway 84 live music had to be a part of it,” notes Anthony Bruno, whose family originally opened Runway 84 and who co-owns the restaurant with partners Pat Marzano and Marc Falsetto. “The music we played at Runway was always an important part of the experience and with the reopening we wanted to double down on that and deliver something we thought Fort Lauderdale was lacking and would love – an honest to God supper club.” And the trio have delivered that in spades and done so in such a manner that longtime fans and newbies have found their own “best way” to appreciate a night at Runway 84. For those seeking a decidedly more-demure experience with more table talk than tunes, Runway 84 delights as an earlier-in-the-evening dining destination. The band’s first set on Tuesday and Wednesday starts at 8:00 p.m., 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays; Fridays and Saturdays at 9:00 p.m. and on Sundays at 6:30 p.m. With the first rimshot and strum of the guitar a rollicking dinner party takes wind and a Goodfellas-style, Copacabana vibe fills the air. So much so that even with every seat in the house full, be it with diners or imbibers, the bar fills nightly with those seeking a proper pour and the kind of live, big band-era sounds you simply cannot find anywhere else. Easter Reservations A meal at Anthony’s Runway 84 is and always has been a special occasion destination and a table at this hotter-than-hot restaurant is a hard get especially at the holidays, Easter included! The good news is that for Easter Sunday the restaurant is opening two hours earlier at 3:00 p.m. This gives those looking for a delicious Easter Sunday celebration two extra hours in which to snag a reservation at this beloved Italian-American eatery. The restaurant’s a la carte menu will be available to all. Reservations for table seating are required. Anthony’s Runway 84 is located at 330 West State Road 84, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33315. For more information, visit: www.runway84.com - Telephone: (954) 467-8484. Reservations for table seating are required and can be booked online; seating in the bar area is first come, first served. Anthony’s Runway 84 is located at 330 West State Road 84 in Fort Lauderdale, just east of Federal Highway and I-95. Telephone: (954) 467-8484. - Neighbors say "Ole!": To Mermaid Queen Fine Mexican Dining on Hollywood Beach
Neighbors say "Ole!": To Mermaid Queen Fine Mexican Dining on Hollywood Beach May 31, 2023 Share Taco fans are rejoicing about the opening of The Mermaid Queen, a new Mexican Fusion Restaurant at 300 South Broadwalk. This newest entry into Hollywood's beachfront eatery lineup is the latest from long-time Hollywood restaurateur and entrepreneur Jenny Bianca, founder of former Broadwalk favorite The Taco Spot. But the new place is more than just tacos. "The Mermaid Queen actually has three separate menus," explained Bianca, who is partnering with her Argentinian-born husband, Diego Mendelson, on the new endeavor. "While the front terrace serves the same favorites that were available at the Taco Spot, there is also a full take-away section so people can bring their food down to the beach. And what is especially exciting is that we now also have a dining room for fine, upscale Mexican cuisine, with an emphasis on seafood." Bianca has been a mainstay of Hollywood Beach for over 20 years, since she first arrived in Florida from Mexico. She ran a small beachwear business, selling to all the Broadwalk boutiques, and counts most of the Broadwalk business and property owners among her customers. She loves working in Hollywood, because "It reminds me of my home in Cancun," she said, and the Broadwalk was her first choice of location for The Mermaid Queen. "I do know a lot of people here," she affirmed. "This location is more residential, different than the other places, and gives us many opportunities that we didn't have before. The time was right, with all the new investment and redevelopment in the area, and the increased foot traffic which continues to attract new businesses and more people to Hollywood." Since The Mermaid Queen opened, Bianca reports, some of the most popular dishes have featured seafood, including Seafood Tacos ($3.75 - $5.25), Shrimp Quesadillas ($16.00), Ceviche ($14.25 - $18.50), and Burritos ($14.00 - $17.00). In the inside dining room, popular dishes include the Come Back to Life Seafood Soup ($17.00), the Grilled Octopus ($25.00 - $32.00), and the Chipotle Sword Fish ($23.50). "Everything is extremely fresh," noted Mendelson, adding that they make everything from scratch. The bar features beer, wine, and a range of cocktails made from wine-based liquors which taste (and work!) like the real thing. "We have big dreams for the next few years," said Bianca. "We see this area becoming more of a destination on Hollywood Beach; we want it to become known as The Mermaid Queen Beach!" The Mermaid Queen is open seven days a week from 11 am to 10 pm. Strengthening Communities Across Israel: 7,495 Volunteers Impact Over 122,000 Lives Pictured: Members of MAKOM communities in Israel are people who participate in mission-driven communities that work to improve society. Feb 18, 2025 A Jewish National Fund-USA Grassroots Initiative dedicated to strengthening communities across Israel, has released new data showcasing its transformative impact on the country’s northern and southern regions. According to the latest report, its initiative has mobilized 7,495 active community volunteers, who in turn serve over 122,600 beneficiaries through educational, cultural, and social welfare programs. These dedicated community members—comprising educators, secular and religious leaders, students, and artists—work together to assess local needs, develop programs, and create sustainable solutions that foster resilience and unity. Key Impact Highlights: • Be’er Sheva leads in impact with nearly 1,000 volunteers supporting 42,000 beneficiaries, including students, educators, and members of the Mountain Jewish and religious Zionist communities. • Kiryat Shmona and Sderot emerge as strongholds of resilience, with 290 and 640 active members, respectively, reaching thousands through social welfare and education programs. • Diverse community engagement: Jewish National Fund-USA's programs support Druze communities in towns like Beit Jan and Yanuh-Jat, Ba’aley Tshuva (returnees to religious observance) in cities like Katzrin and Ma’alot, and artists and educators throughout Israel’s periphery. • From youth empowerment to crisis support, Jewish National Fund-USA-supported volunteers run after-school programs, distribute food packages, provide senior care, and offer emergency aid to displaced families, ensuring that no community is left behind. A Movement of Grassroots Change "This is more than a network of communities—it’s a movement that brings people together, empowers local leadership, and builds the future of Israel from the ground up," explained one volunteer. "With every program launched and every life touched, our volunteers prove that meaningful change starts at the grassroots level. With continued support from Jewish National Fund-USA and its generous partners, the program is poised to expand its reach and deepen its impact, reinforcing its mission to create vibrant, self-sustaining communities across Israel. Circle of Impact The volunteer-driven initiative plays a critical role in Jewish National Fund-USA's Circle of Impact, whereby each initiative helps the organization's strategic aim of attracting 800,000 new residents to Israel's north and south. "Every program, initiative, and project we undertake directly or indirectly creates employment opportunities, economic growth, and community resilience, which are all essential elements in boosting the population of Israel's frontiers," said Jewish National Fund-USA Chief Israel Officer, Talia Tzour Avner." - Gardening With Grandma: An Alzheimer’s Story for Children and Their Families
Gardening With Grandma: An Alzheimer’s Story for Children and Their Families March 22, 2024 Share The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) announced a new educational tool to help adults discuss Alzheimer’s Disease with young children in an age-appropriate way. Gardening with Grandma: An Alzheimer’s Story for Children and Their Families is an educational children’s book created by AFA as a resource for adults. The book is available in English and Spanish through AFA’s e-store at: www.shop.alzfdn.org “When Alzheimer’s enters a family’s life, it often brings many questions—children especially may not understand what is happening or why their loved one is behaving a certain way,” said AFA President & CEO Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. “This educational tool gives adults a way to explain Alzheimer’s Disease to a child in an age-appropriate way, help them understand brain changes, provide tips on how to engage with their loved ones, answer questions and show them that love is a bond that Alzheimer’s can never break.” Gardening with Grandma is designed to be a teaching tool adults can use to have a conversation with a child about Alzheimer’s Disease. The book follows 8-year-old Luke’s learning experience as he finds new ways to connect with his grandmother who has Alzheimer’s Disease. Grandma, who is early in her diagnosis, is able to share with him that even though she has a disease that affects her memory and behavior, she still loves him. The story unfolds as Luke adjusts to her move to a new home with more support. Gardening with Grandma also includes a special message to adults to help them have meaningful, age-appropriate conversations with a child when a special person in their life has Alzheimer’s, including guidance on how to initiate the conversation, sample questions to ask the child, and tips to help them better understand. AFA’s Helpline, staffed entirely by licensed social workers and available seven days a week, can also provide information about discussing Alzheimer’s Disease with a child or assistance with other Alzheimer’s-related questions. The Helpline can be reached by phone at: (866) 232-8484, web chat at: www.alzfdn.org Or text message at: (646) 586-5283. The web chat and text messages features can serve individuals in more than 90 languages. “Young children, in particular, may sense something is amiss when a family member has Alzheimer’s, but may not be able to understand the subtle changes that are occurring early on in the disease progression,” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, AFA’s Director of Educational & Social Services. “Reading this book together with your child and having a conversation can help make them more understanding and compassionate, less fearful, and ultimately learn new ways to communicate with their loved one.” Gardening with Grandma: An Alzheimer’s Story for Children and Their Families is available for purchase through AFA’s e-store at: https://shop.alzfdn.org/ in both English and Spanish. Proceeds go toward AFA’s programs, services, and research toward a more effective treatment/cure for Alzheimer’s Disease. The AFA The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide support, services and education to individuals, families and caregivers affected by Alzheimer’s Disease and related Dementias nationwide and to fund research for better treatment and a cure. Its services include a National Toll-Free Helpline (866-232-8484) staffed entirely by licensed social workers, caregiver support groups, educational programs and publications for caregivers, Dementia-care training for healthcare professionals, the National Memory Screening Program, and more.
