  • Finding A Way Forward Together: Hallandale Beach Is Working On Multiple Fronts To Better The Community

Finding A Way Forward Together: Hallandale Beach Is Working On Multiple Fronts To Better The Community By Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper January 25, 2024 Share Many of us watch our local news and shudder to think about the Gun Violence in our communities and the tragic loss of life. Years ago, these reports came typically out of big cities, but now small and large cities alike have had shootings. We all collectively are working to stem the rise in Violent Crimes. Hallandale Beach has had its share of senseless shootings. The majority have a nexus to gangs that are in the South Florida area. After the COVID-19 Pandemic, we began to see a resurgence of gang conflicts in our City. These are gangs with young adults ages 14 to their late twenties Pompano, Dania Beach, Hollywood, West Park, Pembroke Park and Hallandale Beach all have had rivalries typically stem from High School. One may think of West Side Story but with the prevalence of guns in these fights rather than fist or knives are resulting in shootings. Not all of these crimes make the news. The last shooting that took place was not. A 16-year-old was targeted and shot while on his bike. Four other teens in a car shot at him. He jumped off his bike and they pursued him. He was struck on his foot. Due to our Commissions’ commitment to Public Safety and Investments in Technology that picks up shots fired; Police were on site within minutes. They are conducting a full investigation. This fall we had another tragic shooting and that was the final straw for me. A student at Hallandale High, Marcus Impert was coming home from his first high school football game. His mother debated allowing him to attend. He was on his way home as a passenger when he was shot and killed. The driver who was the intended target was uninjured. Once again, there were no witnesses to come forward. This could be due to fear or simply not wanting a friend, brother, cousin to get in trouble. There are ways through Crime Stoppers which are anonymous to report information. We also have our own City Tip Line at: (954) 457-1404. The Chief and our Department took to the street and went door to door. Their goal was twofold. One to reassure our residents they are working hard and care. The other to give out information on Marcus Impert and Crime Stoppers. The neighborhood was receptive. This case and others are active cases. Our department continues to work on them, and they remain open. Our Police can only do so much. They need evidence to solve crimes. Witnesses are an important part of solving crimes but with or without them it takes a long time to work through the criminal justice system. I would like to say it is not Law and Order, solved in one hour. We all need to work together and try to prevent crime. This takes parents, neighbors, schools, churches and Police working side by side. I was both heartbroken and frustrated. I decided that we need to do more to unite. These young adults go to our schools. There needs to be more understanding and accountability from all parties. I asked to hold a meeting with the Principals, Chiefs of Police and Mayors from our zone. We held our first Task Force Meetings. Sadly, due to the death of Principal Campbell from Gulfstream K-8 we have not met. We will meet as soon as the new principal is appointed. This does not mean we have been sitting back. Principal Campbell talked very wisely at the first meeting. He talked about going back to the old school ways. Children were still not healed from the impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The families still were not all back to level footing. His suggestion was to come together as a community with our old Crime Watch Block Parties. I took his message to heart. My goal was simply to get resources and information out to our community as a whole. Not just kids, but for all ages. I was blessed around the same time to be approached by two wonderful individuals that had lost their sons. “Big Ike” of Project Love and Andrea McDonald of “Advise Athletes.” Andrea wanted to do a field day in honor of her Son Alex “Budda” Collins the NFL Football Player. Budda started football in our PAL Program. Alex lost his life when he was struck by a car on his motorcycle. Big Ike, who lost his son 10 years ago, has always done outreach. His first play was about AIDS and changing fear to love. His new project is a play with the goal of uniting the community and Changing fear of Police to collaborating with Pastors, Police and the community. We have partnered with our Police Activities League to create a “Community Field Fun Day and Resource Fair.” Our presenting Sponsor is Memorial Hospitals “One City At A Time” Initiative. The event is FREE of charge. There will be athletic competitions Football, Basketball, Track, Tennis and Pickleball Lessons, a Memorial Service for all that have lost loved ones from Violence and the COVID-19 Pandemic. Guest speakers during the day. There will be a Tailgate Hot Dog Lunch and other entertainment. In addition, there will be a Health and Community Partner Resources Fair that includes a FREE Tree Giveaway, Our Human Services Department will be on hand to share information on our After School Tutorial Programs and Senior Programs, The Supervisor Of Elections will be on hand to help with your Registrations, the Property Appraiser will be on hand to help with Homestead Information and the Tax Deferment Program, Whether you are a child or senior there will be something for everyone and much more. To everyone that visits the Resource Fair and fills their passport, they can enter to win a TV Show Ticket and Other Prizes. As always please feel free to contact me anytime with your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place! I am available at: jcooper@cohb.org . Or: joycooper@aol.com . At my office: (954) 457-1318. Or on my Cell/Text at: (954) 632-5700. You can always visit my Facebook and follow me at Mayor Joy Cooper. < Previous News Next News >

  • Education is Failing America's Future By Forgetting its Past

Education is Failing America's Future By Forgetting its Past By Jamie Gass and Chris Sinacola January 31, 2024 Share In 2022, eighth grade test scores in civics and U.S. history hit record lows. The decline didn't start with pandemic school closings. But they made it worse and revealed its extent. Less than half of adults can name the three branches of the U.S. government. Another 25% can't name even one. And just over one-third of Americans can pass the U.S. citizenship test. These sad facts are a reminder that the future success of our nation is far from guaranteed. We must acknowledge the imperfections of our current system and work to reform them -- a challenging but hardly impossible task. For starters, history curricula should be based on the United States' founding documents: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Federalist Papers. Some states have prioritized reading primary sources and writing assignments so that students develop background knowledge, vocabulary, and the ability to advance evidence-based arguments. The 1993 Massachusetts Education Reform Act, for example, prioritized the study of U.S. history through primary documents in each grade and required passing a U.S. history exam for high school graduation. South Carolina, California, Alabama, Indiana, and New York have also previously adopted rigorous state standards for history and social science. In some cases, these reforms were repealed in favor of trendier classes in "social studies." But the principles underlying the 1993 Massachusetts law and others like it got the fundamental questions right. They are worthy of revival. All states should also require a passing mark on a civics test or the U.S. citizenship exam for a high-school diploma. Today, only eight states do so. If we're to truly become the educated society the Founders envisioned, we'll have to invest in better training for teachers as well. Most states have dropped even basic requirements for people entering the teaching profession, blaming a shortage of qualified labor. Finally, the institutes of higher learning that train teachers must convey the centrality of civics and history in a curriculum geared toward producing good citizens. Education is the responsibility of state and local actors. Rather than retaining the top-down approach that has led to our current failures, school systems should engage with parents to understand their educational priorities for their children. Expanded school-choice programs can provide the means for parents to go elsewhere when they are dissatisfied with available public education options. The importance of a nonpartisan, fact-based U.S. history and civics education cannot be overstated. Without one, students will not be able to take their place as informed and engaged citizens dedicated to preserving the legacy of America's Founders. We know how to provide that sort of education. We just need the will to make it happen. The future of our great country depends on it. Jamie Gass is Director for the Center for School Reform at Pioneer Institute, where Chris Sinacola is Director of Communications. They are co-editors of Restoring the City on a Hill: U.S. History and Civics in America's Schools. A longer version of this piece was originally published in the Miami Herald. • Miami's Olivia Ostrow Brings Modern Kosher Cuisine To National Spotlight On Food Network | sun-times

Miami's Olivia Ostrow Brings Modern Kosher Cuisine To National Spotlight On Food Network Jewish Connection News Apr 23, 2026 South Florida’s Jewish Culinary Scene Is Stepping Into The National Spotlight As Miami-Based Chef And Restaurateur Olivia Ostrow Prepares To Compete On The Upcoming Season Of 24 In 24: Last Chef Standing, Premiering On Sunday, April 26th, 2026. Ostrow, the chef behind Maison Ostrow in North Bay Village, is the only Kosher chef competing in this season’s lineup. The high-intensity competition, hosted by Michael Symon and Esther Choi, challenges 24 chefs to complete 24 culinary tasks over 24 consecutive hours, all vying for a $100,000 prize. For Ostrow, the opportunity represents a chance to showcase her personality and how Kosher dining has evolved. At Maison Ostrow, she has built a reputation for redefining expectations around Kosher cuisine, blending French and Mediterranean influences with a modern, elevated approach. The restaurant has quickly become a destination for both observant diners and a broader audience seeking a refined culinary experience without compromise. Her approach reflects a broader shift within the Jewish food world, where tradition and innovation increasingly coexist. Rather than adhering strictly to classic interpretations, chefs like Ostrow are expanding the boundaries of Kosher dining by introducing global techniques, seasonal ingredients, and design-forward hospitality that resonates with a new generation. Ostrow’s impact has not gone unnoticed. She was named Best Chef in Miami by Aventura Magazine and included in The Algemeiner’s prestigious J100 list, which recognizes individuals making meaningful contributions to Jewish life around the world. To celebrate her television debut, Ostrow will host a premiere watch party at Maison Ostrow, inviting guests from across the community to come together for a shared moment of pride. The evening will feature a champagne toast, live entertainment and a live viewing of the episode, offering attendees the chance to experience both her cuisine and her milestone achievement firsthand. As South Florida continues to thrive as a hub for Jewish culture and cuisine, Ostrow’s national debut underscores the region’s influence and the evolving story of kosher dining today. Her appearance on 24 in 24: Last Chef Standing is not just a personal milestone but a reflection of a larger movement: one where Jewish chefs are bringing their heritage, creativity, and vision to the forefront of the global culinary stage. • America's Moldiest Cities - Study Reveals 8 Florida Cities (Led By Fort Lauderdale) With The Highest Respiratory Risk For Residents

America's Moldiest Cities - Study Reveals 8 Florida Cities (Led By Fort Lauderdale) With The Highest Respiratory Risk For Residents December 30, 2024 Share Hidden Mold is silently threatening homes across America - even in cities you'd least suspect. While many dismiss it as a mere nuisance, Mold exposure can actually have devastating health consequences, from chronic skin conditions to dangerous Respiratory Infections and potentially life-threatening lung inflammation. To dig deeper into this issue, Deye combined environmental and climate data from multiple research sources with a survey asking 3,000 homeowners if they've experienced Mold in their home in the past year. The result? A list of the 150 moldiest cities in America - places where residents are most likely to deal with Mold-related health concerns. The top 10 moldiest cities are as follows: 1. Fort Lauderdale, Florida Claiming the not-so-coveted top spot, Fort Lauderdale is the moldiest city in the U.S. The constant rain, warm weather, and high humidity create a perfect storm for Mold to thrive, especially in older buildings or those near water. If you’ve got a leaky roof here, chances are you’ve got some Mold too. 2. New Orleans, Louisiana In second place, New Orleans has a reputation for its unique culture, but it’s also known for its Mold problems. Between the swampy surroundings, frequent flooding, and charming yet old architecture, moisture loves to stick around - and Mold loves moisture. 3. Baton Rouge, Louisiana Baton Rouge is another Louisiana city battling Mold, thanks to its steamy climate and location along the Mississippi River. Add in heavy rain and Hurricane Season, and you’ve got a recipe for Mold that’s hard to beat. 4. Orlando, Florida With regular thunderstorms and muggy weather, it’s no surprise Orlando made the list. Poor ventilation in homes and buildings only makes things worse, creating damp spots where Mold can grow fast. 5. Tampa, Florida Tampa’s tropical storms and high humidity make Mold almost unavoidable. The low-lying areas of this coastal city are especially vulnerable, as flooding often leaves behind damp conditions that Mold just can’t resist. 6. Miami, Florida Miami might be known for its sunshine and beaches, but Mold is a common houseguest here. The constant rain and coastal humidity mean that without good airflow, Mold can take over indoor spaces in no time. 7. Biloxi, Mississippi In 7th place overall, Biloxi’s coastal location puts it right in the path of Hurricanes and Tropical Storms, which often lead to flooding. Water-damaged homes are prime real estate for Mold, making it a persistent issue in this Gulf Coast city. 8. Shreveport, Louisiana The regular rain and humid conditions present in Shreveport are contributors to the city’s significant Mold issues. Proximity to rivers and flood zones doesn’t help, either - it’s a damp city through and through. 9. Gainesville, Florida Gainesville’s hot and humid summers, paired with seasonal downpours, create the perfect environment for Mold. Homes with poor ventilation are especially at risk, as dampness tends to stick around in these spaces. 10. Lafayette, Louisiana Located near marshlands, Lafayette is no stranger to moisture. The combination of high humidity and frequent rain means Mold is a regular problem, particularly in areas where airflow isn’t great. Three 'other' Florida cities were ranked among the moldiest in America: 12. Tallahassee, Florida Tallahassee’s combination of high humidity and regular rainfall fosters Mold growth, particularly in poorly ventilated buildings or shaded areas where moisture lingers. 13. Naples, Florida Naples’ year-round warmth and high humidity, coupled with occasional coastal storms, create an ideal setting for indoor Mold growth. Homes near the beach are especially susceptible to these challenges. 15. Sarasota, Florida Coastal Sarasota experiences consistent humidity and frequent rain, making Mold a common concern. Older homes and those near the coastline face added risks due to the persistent dampness. “Most of us don't realize how severely Mold can affect both our health and our homes,” says Allen Dong of Deye. “The good news is that simple steps like fixing leaky pipes promptly, running bathroom fans during showers, and using a dehumidifier to keep indoor humidity below 60% can make a huge difference. Even in the most Mold-prone cities across the country, these basic preventive measures can stop Mold before it becomes a problem.” To learn more visit: https://deye.com/study-reveals-the-150-moldiest-cities-in-america/ < Previous News Next News >
