- Ellie’s Army Foundation: Dirty Socks 5K Run And Walkathon To Benefit Children And Young Adults
Ellie’s Army Foundation: Dirty Socks 5K Run And Walkathon To Benefit Children And Young Adults February 21, 2024 Share Ellie Levy’s life was about teaching everyone about compassion and caring - while suffering from Cystic Fibrosis (CF), a terminal genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs. What Ellie and her family saw, from the beginning, were people hurting - and it affected all of them in a way that many of us could ever understand. During Ellie’s many hospitalizations, Stacey and Brian Levy began to meet far too many parents struggling to keep their children alive due to limited financial resources. This is something that many in this nation never have the chance to see - and convey it to those who may one day do something about a parent who can’t afford to pay for life-saving medications because they have no money for copayments, or for crucial nutritional supplements or necessary therapies, because they were not covered by insurance. Parents should not have to choose between keeping their child alive and paying their Electric or Mortgage/Rent Bills. So, in 2001, in response to what they saw and watched others endure, the Levy’s created the Reach for the Stars Foundation in 2001 to benefit individuals with CF. Fourteen years later, in March of 2014, Ellie was 22 years old and suffering from the end stages of Cystic Fibrosis. She received a Double-Lung Transplant, but within a week, her new lungs were failing and she was re-listed for another set of lungs. Against all odds, she endured a second transplant on April 15th. During her recovery, Ellie met another young woman who also needed a Lung Transplant, but was unable to meet the financial criteria to be accepted into the Transplant Program. At that moment, Ellie decided that when she was well, she would focus her efforts on providing other young people with the money necessary to stay alive. Sadly, on November 5th, 2014, Ellie Levy passed away. In her honor, the memory of Ellie Levy indeed lives on - as her foundation name was changed to Ellie’s Army Foundation in 2017. The foundation has expanded its mission to assist not only those afflicted with Cystic Fibrosis, but children and young adults suffering from all critical illnesses. Why Dirty Socks? The inspiration behind the “Dirty Socks” event was Ellie’s surgeon (Gustavo), who told her in order to survive her Lung Transplant, she would have to walk. Despite the pain, Ellie walked and walked and walked, often exceeding her surgeon’s expectations - and to prove her hard work, Gustavo wanted to see the bottom of her socks. If they were dirty, she was doing what was told. So, despite the pain, Ellie walked and walked and walked. She was a Warrior! “Ellie gave her surgeon a bag with her dirty socks in it. He said that he will keep her socks in his office for the rest of his life. Ellie inspired him with her determination, her desire to live and her fight.” All children in the hospital wear medical socks and must walk to get well. Sometimes they can only take a few steps. At the Dirty Socks 5K Run & Walkathon we walk for them. We walk for Ellie. By taking part in the Dirty Socks 5K & Walkathon, you are walking for those who fight the fight every day - and paying tribute to Ellie Levy, who helped to bring awareness to a disease that many knew nothing about. Ellie’s Army Foundation is hosting the Dirty Socks 5K Run & Walkathon to benefit children and young adults battling life-threatening illnesses. The Foundation provides financial resources for families of children and young adults battling life-threatening illnesses. Ellie’s Army Foundation helps pay for medical expenses, insurance copayments, therapies, or daily living expenses such as housing payments, energy costs, utility bills, etc. Now more than ever these families are struggling. Be a Warrior, come get your socks dirty! For more information, visit: www.Elliesarmy.org - Or: www.Dirtysocks.org < Previous News Next News >

- Cannabis Straight Talk from Miracle Leaf
Cannabis Straight Talk from Miracle Leaf PROFILES April 24, 2022 Share The annual National Cannabis Day, which is observed on, April 20 has just passed and Geo Tejada of the Miracle Leaf Cannabis Health Center in Hallandale Beach seeks to set the record straight on his products. “There’s a lot of confusion about Cannabis,” he says. “People want to know why they should consider the use of Cannabis. Where can they buy these products? Is Cannabis legal in Florida? Do people need a license to buy it? How can Cannabis products be used?” Tejada explains that Cannabis products come from the Cannabis Sativa Plant, a widely cultivated crop around the world. “It exists in multiple varieties,” he says. THC Vs. CBD Some varieties of Cannabis have Psychoactive Properties that produce a euphoric reaction. They contain a relatively high concentration of a substance called Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The common name for such varieties is Marijuana. Florida Law allows the use of “Medical Marijuana” that is high in THC for certain qualifying conditions, including: Cancer, Crohn’s Disease, Epilepsy, Glaucoma, HIV-AIDS, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Patients must obtain a Medical Marijuana Card and a recommendation from a Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine who have taken a course and passed an exam to receive certification as a Marijuana Physician. Upon being approved, patients join a registry and receive a Medical Marijuana Card. Then they may purchase their recommended THC Products from a Dispensary Licensed by the State. “Today,” Tejada says, “over 500,000 patients are registered in Florida.” The rules are different for other varieties of Cannabis, known as Hemp, that contain only trace amounts of THC. During World War II, the U.S. Government used Hemp to make canvas, rope and uniforms. Today it is a source of products as diverse as biofuel, cement, cosmetics, clothing, insulation, paper and textiles. “Hemp became a Federally Approved Crop under the 2018 Farm Bill and all of our products are Hemp-Based,” Tejada says. “Their primary substance, Cannabidiol (CBD), lacks euphoric properties but still can alleviate symptoms of anxiety, pain and stress associated with a variety of medical conditions. “You don’t need a Medical Marijuana Card and a Recommendation to buy the products we sell at Health Centers such as Miracle Leaf,” he emphasizes. To Smoke Or Not The discussion of Cannabis typically revolves around smoking the flowers, but that’s not the only way to use Cannabis Products. Hemp-Based CBD Products in particular have blossomed (pun intended) in recent years, offering a wide variety of consumption alternatives. Tejada lists Sublingual Tinctures (drops of liquid under the tongue), “Vapes” for inhalation, Edible Gummies and Topical Pain-relief Creams that are popular with the elderly. Cannabis also is a major ingredient in Alice B. Toklas’ Brownies. Alice was the life-mate of Author Gertrude Stein, who reigned over the Parisian Literary Scene between the two World Wars. Google “Alice B. Toklas’ Brownies” to find thousands of entries about this confection. If you make these brownies with Marijuana, limit consumption and beware of the unintended side effects. Hemp is kinder and gentler in this regard. Tejada says his Miracle Leaf store in Hallandale Beach has over 2,000 regular customers. Some are Tobacco smokers who view Miracle Leaf’s CBD Products as a desirable alternative, while others use CBD Products while waiting for their medical Marijuana Cards and Recommendations. “We’re not a Medical Marijuana Dispensary,” he emphasizes, “but we do have Certified Marijuana Physicians on staff to provide assistance to people who come in with specific medical needs. “Most of our customers are older than 45. Cannabis is not just for the young. The elderly have been able to connect with the use of Cannabis. We can’t make medical claims for a cure, but we have been able to help many patients with medical conditions to alleviate their symptoms.” For Fido and Tabby Many pet owners give CBD Products to their dogs and cats, Tejada says. Signs your Canine and Feline friends may benefit from CBD include Arthritis and other Inflammatory Ailments, Chronic Pain, Digestive Tract Upsets, Kidney and Liver Ailments, Separation Anxiety when you leave home and the fear of thunder and other loud noises. Also, while it’s not a cure, CBD may prolong and improve the quality of life for elderly Dogs and Cats with Cancer and other Terminal Conditions. CBD Products sold specifically for Pets include Capsules and Chews, Peanut Butter, Tinctures, Treats and Topical Preparations such as shampoos and balms. Resist the temptation to give your Pets the same products you use, Tejada advises. Look for products specifically formulated and lab tested for Pets and Organically Sourced, which mean they come from Pesticide-FREE Hemp Plants. Dosage depends on your Pet’s size, weight and individual body chemistry. While product packaging and your Veterinarian may offer guidelines, every Pet is different, so start slowly and work up to an Optimal Dosage. National Cannabis Day National Cannabis Day originated with five California high school students who met at 4:20 p.m. on April 20th, 1971, to smoke Marijuana. Today it’s an International Counter-Culture Holiday and an opportunity for the Cannabis Industry to showcase its products and services. “The Industry gives back to the community with big promotions and sales,” Tejada says, adding that Miracle Leaf always participates in the observance in a big way. - How Much Are You Carrying? Constant Worrying Is Deleterious To Your Mental And Physical Wellbeing
How Much Are You Carrying? Constant Worrying Is Deleterious To Your Mental And Physical Wellbeing By Bryan Golden May 11, 2023 Share You wouldn’t be able to lift a 55 gallon drum filled with water. Although you could easily pick up a cleaning bucket filled with water, you wouldn’t want to hold it for a long time. If you tried, it would feel as if it were getting heavier rather quickly. Holding a cup filled with water is a cinch. Anyone can do it. But how long can you hold it for? The longer it’s held, the heavier it seems. At some point in time, you would need to put it down. Just as a seemingly light object becomes heavier the longer it’s held, so do the burdens you carry around with you on a constant basis. An issue that initially appears minor grows in significance the longer you hold onto it. The weight increases steadily as you clutch onto numerous concerns. You become bogged down even faster with the cumulative mass of your collected burdens. Your Stress level rises while your energy and enthusiasm drops. Because the progression is gradual, it’s not readily noticeable until it starts to become overwhelming. Every time you pick up a minor burden it appears to be no big deal. It gets added to your load without much thought. Since the mental weight increases gradually, you adjust to it and incrementally adjust to the growing load. Each issue alone may be relatively insignificant. Even though you may not be consciously aware of its presence, you are still affected subconsciously. Since the weight you are carrying rises so gradually, you accept the increasing burden as normal and tolerable. As such, you don’t readily perceive the incremental additions to your stress level. Although you may feel anxious, more irritable, less energetic and less patient, there is no one obvious culprit you can identify. This fact further compounds your frustration. Over time, you forget exactly why you are carrying many of the burdens. The details fade, leaving behind only emotions or bad feelings. You become weighed down by accumulated Mental Debris that is no longer identifiable. Worry makes things worse. It intensifies whatever you are carrying. Worrying drains your energy without accomplishing a thing. Worry doesn’t help you in any way. There is not one good reason to accumulate Mental Issues. It’s a bad habit that needs to be corrected as soon as possible. In order to accomplish this, you must change your approach. Let’s consider an alternative scenario. Each time you pick up a small burden you let it go rather than carrying it. It’s that simple. With this approach your burden never grows. This works because there’s no point dragging problems around with you. Here’s how you deal with new issues. For each, ask yourself the following questions: Does this really matter? If not, let it go. Is this worth my energy? If not, let it go. Do I have any control over the issue? If not, let it go. If yes, take the appropriate action and then let it go. Also, stop worrying. It’s OK to be concerned and take action when and where appropriate. When you let your burdens drop, it’s easier to release the accompanying worries as well. Constant worrying is deleterious to your Mental and Physical Wellbeing. Furthermore, it causes you to hang onto those very things you should be letting go of. Stay vigilant. Be aware of what you are picking up. It’s too easy to revert back to your old pattern. As you empty your Mental load you’ll feel lighter. You will quickly realize how pointless it is to pick things up in the first place. Bryan is the Author of "Dare to Live Without Limits." Contact Bryan at: Bryan@columnist.com . - At War With The Weather: Hallandale Beach Was Hit Hard...Again
At War With The Weather: Hallandale Beach Was Hit Hard...Again By Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper June 21, 2024 Share First and foremost, I want to send my thoughts and prayers to those that have lost their belongings and are dealing with repairing their homes. This battle started on Monday with the prediction of 3 to 5 inches of rain. City Manager Earle notified our commission and team that our operational plans were being executed in light of the predictions. Our staff when a rain event is announced mobilizes. Just like at war. The team goes to check on the drains and the equipment. Once again without any warning the 5 inches turned into 20 within less than 24 hours and Hallandale Beach became the epicenter! This storm was not declared a National Emergency. We were the first city to declare an emergency at 2:30 p.m. The county followed suit around 6:00 p.m. and then the State. This declaration provides funding relief only to the city. It provided emergency equipment and reimbursed cities for operational costs. Sadly, unless there is a loss of 1,000 homes per county FEMA will not provide homeowner assistance. Knowing this information, on Thursday morning I called the Red Cross. They began to mobilize. I heard from Congresswoman Wasserman-Schultz and Senator Rick Scott who both were sympathetic. State Representative Marie Woodson also reached out. The SBA does have business relief but only for commercial properties. State Senator Pizzo has been amazing. He along with State Emergency Director Guthrie were in our City working with our Staff. Vice Mayor Anabelle Lima Taub also was extremely proactive during the storm. As of Tuesday, Senator Pizzo was requesting through powers in state law to leverage relief from the Florida Emergency Management Relief Foundation FEMAF to help homeowners. Last year when we had the “Thousand Year Storm” everybody was really taken off guard and was shocked at the torrential rains that inundated South Florida. No one expected a repeat so soon after that event. As we now know after living through not one but two everything has changed. I need to reassure everyone that our pumping systems are working. Even though they have remote transponding systems we manually check them. In addition, all of our pumps have hospital grade generators so even if there is an electric outage, they work. The capacity of rain just like last year was simply too much for any pumps to keep up with. Last year the storm impacted mainly the eastern side of town. This storm impacted everywhere but in the Southwest we witnessed flooding like no one has seen before. The Southwest was totally inundated; some homes were under one and a half to two feet of water. Schaffer Canal breached and our lakes overflowed. Our city has invested in pumping systems in the southwest that were part of a FEMA Grant. We completed that project and are now dredging to increase capacity and flow. After last year we were pleased to see the area did not flood and pumps were doing their job. Not the case this year. On Wednesday night I questioned our City Manager about what had changed. In my opinion, it is possibly the expansion of I-95 and other work on Ives Dairy Road that may be having an impact. I have asked Staff to thoroughly research what has significantly changed. I have been asked the question why we cannot simply pump out to the Ocean or the Intracoastal. There are now environmental rules and regulations that focus on not pumping out runoff to our oceans. Obviously, there are pollutants and all types of impacts from stormwater runoff that foul our ocean wildlife and our reefs. The pipes that do connect now are grandfathered in so they can remain in place. With sea level rise and tides they have become less and less effective. Last summer around the same time I held a meeting and committed to our residents that we would prioritize the Northeast area between Federal and 12th. I brought a project request to the commission who voted to put in our budget expanded pumping. These types of drainage projects take years and they cannot be done overnight. I made sure that residents that attended that meeting were clear of the period. Our engineers came forward with a smaller project that focused on the two blocks that were repetitive losses. They are now exploring how to connect Second Avenue to the main pumping system. Hopes are this can give relief while the main large project is being implemented. Now once again, we will need to reinforce on the southwest to understand what happened and what measures can be taken to improve what we already have in place. We are proactive and continue to reassess our responses. Responses from the state take too long and we have found cities like Fort Lauderdale get attention before others. Next Wednesday at our Budget/Commission Meeting, we will be making amendments to order more pumps and storm equipment. While this costs money we are finally financially stable enough to be able to make these critical investments. While we pray there will not be another 1000-year storm with climate change and more intense storms heading our way we know that everything has changed. Thanks to our entire team. They saved over 35 residents. At the height of the storm, they rescued an Autistic lost child. They even rescued pets. We are still doing assessments and debriefings. As always feel free to contact me anytime with your questions and concerns at email: jcooper@cohb.org . Or at: joycooper@aol.com . I always can be reached by phone or text at: (954) 632-5700. Working for you! Always Have! Always will! < Previous News Next News >

Mauro’s commitment to raising Epilepsy awareness has already taken him to Tallahassee for Epilepsy Alliance Florida’s Capitol Day, where he met with state legislators in February to share his story and emphasize the need for greater resources and funding for those living with Epilepsy. His advocacy extends beyond Florida’s Capitol. He has expressed interest in starting an Epilepsy club at his school to help educate his peers and foster a more supportive environment. Additionally, he and his family are dedicated participants in Epilepsy Alliance Florida’s annual Walk the Talk for Epilepsy in Hollywood. Epilepsy, a neurological disease that one in 26 people will be diagnosed with at some point in their lives, is a diagnosis given when a person experiences two or more seizures that cannot be attributed to another cause. It is a disorder more people live with than Autism, Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and Cerebral Palsy—combined. In the United States, Florida is the state with the most instances of epilepsy. The Hollywood Walk the Talk for Epilepsy is one of seven walks hosted by Epilepsy Alliance Florida across the state. The other cities where walks will be held are Jacksonville, Gainesville, West Palm Beach, Pensacola, Miami, and Naples.
