  • Family Science Night at Foster Park

Family Science Night at Foster Park By Stephen Cummings November 17, 2023 Share The Kiwanis Club Of Hallandale Beach partnered with the Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League hosting its first Family Science Night at Foster Park with nearly 100 children and adults packing the room learning about opportunities regarding science, technology, engineering and math. Three lifelong friends who grew up in Hallandale Beach, Aeden O’Neill, Julian Demian and Simon Toro who are scholarly seniors attending St. Thomas Aquinas, American Heritage and Cardinal Gibbons respectively galvanized our adult service groups to sponsor a program offered by the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Discovery and Science with the proceeds benefiting Gulfstream Academy. Aeden’s mother has been an educator at neighboring Stirling Elementary School in Hollywood for many years and had successfully implemented this program in her school witnessing students reap the benefits and piquing their curiosity. Kenny Cohan has been an invaluable asset to both the Police Athletic League and Kiwanis who previously skillfully organized an Anti-Bullying Program at Gulfstream Academy a few years ago that received rave reviews and formed a committee that would ensure the success of Family Science Night that included the three seniors, Arturo O’Neill who has served on civic boards and as a past president of the Kiwanis Club Of Hallandale Beach and Proprietor of the Successful Real Estate Management Company, ManageXchange along with his brother Jonathan, PAL Program Director, Jonathan Carrillo, Mari O’Neill who has worked as a lifelong educator at Stirling Elementary School and Steve Cummings who was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach in 1994. The Museum of Discovery and Science set up fifteen separate tables for the children attending grades K-8 where adults supervised games and learning stations watching the young minds fascinated by the challenges as huge smiles gleamed across the room bolstered by their unabashed enthusiasm for learning. As the children strolled from table to table, they received a stamp in their personal passport book which upon successful completion would entitle them to an event t-shirt and a bag filled with incidentals such as a mini calculator and a magnifying glass. Carrillo added to the revenues by selling hot dogs, chips and beverages to the families and acknowledges the hard work of the mothers from the PAL Leadership Academy that were in charge of the food. Jonathan also solved the logistical parking dilemma shuttling folks from OB Johnson Park to Foster Park due to a limited parking capacity. Cohan is grateful to the three major financial sponsors making this program feasible that included United Way, Project Empower and FPL. The city is blessed to have so many wonderful altruistic volunteers such as Hallandale Beach Police Sergeant, Greg Hippolyte who manned a learning station and demonstrated his skillful rapport with children and Noemi Lopez who has grown to be a fixture at every volunteer opportunity in Hallandale Beach displaying an indefatigable energy. Additionally, Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper, Hallandale Beach Commissioner Joy Adams, Kiwanis member Steve Cummings and Arturo O’Neill from local business ManageXchange contributed funds toward this worthy cause. The positive feedback from the attendees has prompted Kenny Cohan to publicly announce at the evening’s conclusion that a subsequent Family Science Night will be placed on the agenda in January. We urge our local businesses to support the continued education of our youth through programs that will steer them in a positive direction. Please contact Steve Cummings at: (954) 907-2392 with your assistance. < Previous News Next News >

  • Home For The Holidays: What To Know Before You Travel For The Holidays

Home For The Holidays: What To Know Before You Travel For The Holidays November 18, 2021 Share Since many Floridians were unable to travel last year, it's unlikely that higher gas prices will keep them from hitting the holiday road While rising Vaccination rates against COVID-19 have increased travelers’ comfort levels, most Americans are still opting to stay home this holiday season but holiday travel levels have increased, according to a new national survey commissioned by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) conducted by Morning Consult. The survey found that 29% of Americans are likely to travel for Thanksgiving and 33% are likely to travel for Christmas—an increase from 21% and 24%, respectively, compared to 2020. Those who do plan to travel over the holidays expect to drive, but rising gas prices may dampen those plans. “While vaccines have helped travelers feel more comfortable, rising gas prices and continued concerns about the Pandemic are making many Americans hesitant to travel during the holidays. Despite a slight expected uptick in holiday travel this year, hotels will continue to face economic fallout from the Pandemic, underscoring the need for targeted federal relief, such as the Save Hotel Jobs Act, to support the industry and its workforce until travel fully returns,” said American Hotel & Lodging Association President and CEO Chip Rogers. Despite being among the hardest hit, hotels are the only segment of the hospitality and leisure industry yet to receive direct Pandemic relief from Congress. That is why AHLA and UNITE HERE, the largest hospitality workers’ union in North America, joined forces to call on Congress to pass the bipartisan Save Hotel Jobs Act to provide critical support to hotels and their workers during this crucial period. The surveys key findings include the following: • Just one in three Americans plans to travel for Christmas (33% likely to travel, 59% unlikely) and even fewer plan to travel for Thanksgiving (29% likely, 61% unlikely) • 68% of Thanksgiving travelers plan to stay with family or friends, while 22% plan to stay in a hotel • 66% of Christmas travelers plan to stay with family or friends, while 23% plan to stay in a hotel • 52% of Americans say they plan to take fewer trips and 53% plan to take shorter trips due to rising gas prices • Leisure travelers are making several adjustments to their travel plans based on the current state of the Pandemic, including only traveling within driving distance (58%), taking fewer trips (48%) and taking shorter trips (46%) • Among parents with children under the age of 12, 41% say the availability of Vaccines for kids ages 5-11 will make them more likely to travel • 68% of Thanksgiving travelers and 64% of Christmas travelers plan to drive, compared to 11% and 14%, respectively, who plan to fly AAA Predicts Thanksgiving Travel to Rebound Near Pre-Pandemic Levels AAA forecasts a strong rebound in holiday travelers this Thanksgiving. The Auto Club Group predicts 53.4 million Americans will travel for the Thanksgiving holiday, up 13% from 2020. This brings travel volumes within 5% of Pre-Pandemic levels from the 2019 holiday. The gap is closing even faster in Florida, as total travel figures are only 2% below Pre-Pandemic levels. AAA predicts nearly 2.9 million Floridians will travel for Thanksgiving, a 13% rebound from the total number of travelers during the 2020 holiday. “It’s beginning to look more like a normal holiday travel season, compared to what we saw last year,” said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Now that U.S. borders are open, Vaccinations are readily available, new health and safety guidelines are in place, travel is once again high on the list for Americans who are ready to reunite with their loved ones for the holidays.” Busier Roads and Airports With 6.4 million more Americans traveling this Thanksgiving (321,000 more Floridians), people should prepare for the roads and airports to be noticeably more crowded than last year’s holiday. AAA predicts road travel to increase by 8%. Yet the most notable improvement for this year’s holiday is domestic air travel, which has almost completely recovered from its dramatic drop-off during the Pandemic and is up 80% from last year. “The re-opening of the U.S. borders to international travelers means airports will be even busier than we’ve recently seen, so travelers must plan for longer lines and extra time for TSA checks,” Haas continued. “With flight delays and cancellations becoming a problem recently, air travelers are encouraged to consider travel insurance. If your flight is cancelled, there are various policies that would help offset unexpected expenses like a hotel, transportation and food. You may also receive compensation for lost luggage, or if your flight is delayed for as little as 3 hours.” Travel Pricing Air—Even with air travel seeing a boost this year, AAA finds that the average lowest airfare is 27.3% less than last year coming in at $132. Tuesday and Wednesday are still the most expensive and heaviest travel days, while Monday and Thursday are generally the lightest and least expensive. Those wanting to book last minute travel will find the best fares about two weeks before Thanksgiving, but keep in mind availability may be limited. Hotels—Mid-range hotel rates have increased about 39%, with average nightly rates ranging between $137 and $172 for AAA Approved Hotels. Car Rentals—Daily car rental rates have increased 4% compared to last Thanksgiving at $98. Over the summer, consumers experienced high costs and limited availability of rental cars in some markets due to the semiconductor chip shortage impacting automakers. As the number of travelers continues to grow, it’s important to reserve rental cars as early as possible. Consult AAA.com/Travel for options and special benefits. Gas Prices—Gas prices surged in October and are likely to remain elevated through the holiday season. The average price for gasoline in Florida was $3.28 per gallon on Monday, November 8th. Thanksgiving gas prices haven’t been that high since 2013. The state average was $2.03 per gallon during last year’s holiday (November 26) and $2.44 on Thanksgiving Day in 2019 (November 28). View daily gas price averages at: www.GasPrices.AAA.com “Since many Floridians were unable to travel last year, it's unlikely that higher gas prices will keep them from hitting the holiday road in 2021,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Gas prices do not typically make the difference of whether Floridians will or will not travel. However, they could impact how far some are willing to drive, while others may need to reallocate more of their travel budget to gasoline, spend less on meals, shopping and dining out.” This year’s forecast marks the highest single-year increase in Thanksgiving travelers since 2005, bringing travel volumes close to Pre-Pandemic levels in 2019. Despite gasoline costing over a dollar more per gallon than this time last year, 90% of people plan to travel by car as their preferred mode of transportation. Although the car is still the most popular choice for travelers, a greater share will opt to travel by air and other modes such as bus, train or cruise this year. Whether you plan to do so by car or plane, it’s important to know how to navigate the new travel landscape to avoid unnecessary stress and challenges on the way to your Thanksgiving destination. < Previous News Next News >

  • 65th Annual Candy Cane Parade: A Busy Weekend Ahead In The City of Hollywood

65th Annual Candy Cane Parade: A Busy Weekend Ahead In The City of Hollywood City of Hollywood December 1, 2021 Share The 65th Annual Candy Cane Parade along the world-famous Hollywood Beach Broadwalk is taking place on Saturday, December 4th at 7:00 p.m. The parade will begin at Missouri Street and will head south along the Broadwalk, past the parade emcee positioned at the Hollywood Beach Theatre at Johnson Street, to Harrison Street. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair for top-notch viewing of the parade floats, marching bands and creative displays from civic, non-profit and children’s groups, or reserve a table at one of the many seaside restaurants. Due to the high demand for parking on the barrier island, beginning at 5:00 p.m., parade goers are encouraged to park in one of the downtown parking garages and take the free shuttle to the beach. The downtown parking garages are located at 19th Avenue at Polk Street and 20th Avenue at Van Buren Street. Shuttles will circulate non-stop throughout the evening with the last shuttle leaving the beach at 10:00 p.m. Downtown parking rates apply. In light of the recent deadly events in Waukesha, Wisconsin, modified security protocols will be in place for the duration of the event. Participant patience is appreciated. Parade participants are being asked to “Help Keep Hollywood Beautiful” by handing out candy to parade goers, rather than throwing it from floats. This will help reduce waste on the Broadwalk and sandy beach. Parade attendees are encouraged to be #SeenBeingGreen by bringing their reusable water bottles. Hollywood’s signature holiday event, the Candy Cane Parade is presented in partnership with the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts. • Holiday Travelers Are Booking Earlier This Year

Holiday Travelers Are Booking Earlier This Year September 14, 2023 Share Although the summer travel season just came to an end, Floridians are already beginning to lock in their travel plans for the holidays. In fact, according to a new AAA survey, three-fifths (61%) of residents are already planning to take a holiday vacation. More than half of them (57%) are booking holiday travel plans earlier this year due to higher travel prices. Two-thirds of holiday travelers (68%) say they’re planning at least one flight during the holiday season. “Whether you plan to book a flight, cruise or visit a theme park, it’s best to get ahead of the holiday rush and finalize your plans now,” said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “This will help ensure you get the itinerary you want at a competitive price. While it’s possible that those who wait until the last minute could catch a lower rate, their preferred options may already be gone.” Thanksgiving Travel More than half of Florida travelers (55%) are planning a trip with at least one overnight stay for Thanksgiving. According to the survey, the largest share of travelers (40%) will lock in their Thanksgiving travel plans during September. By the end of the month, 61% will have already booked their trip. View the survey for more information. Tips for booking flights during Thanksgiving week The busiest travel days will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday. Consider booking a flight Sunday or Monday before Thanksgiving and Saturday after the holiday. Airports should be less busy and flights should have more availability. Christmas Travel The timing is more spread out for Floridians who are planning a trip for Christmas. Only 12% have already finalized plans, as close to a quarter will wait until September (21%), October (28%), and November (26%) to book. Tips for booking flights for Christmas Regardless of what date Christmas falls on, most travelers depart two to four days prior to the holiday. Since Christmas Day falls on a Monday this year, travelers should expect the busiest days at the airport to be Friday and Saturday, before the holiday. AAA’s Advice for Booking a Flight Book early for the best combination of availability and price. Most travelers want to skip layovers and get right to their destination. That means nonstop flights, especially those going cross-country and internationally, will fill up fast. Book a direct flight that leaves early in the morning. Afternoon and evening flights are more susceptible to delays/cancellations due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Connecting flights multiply the risk of something going wrong. Consider traveling a day or two earlier than planned. Even if you face delays, you are still likely to arrive on time. If your flight has connections, build in a couple hours between flights. This way, if your first flight is delayed, you are less likely to miss your second one. Flight Concerns One-third of holiday travelers (33%) say they are less likely to fly this year because they’re concerned about flight delays and cancellations. AAA urges travelers to consider travel insurance, which provides financial compensation if your flight is affected by covered reasons like severe winter weather, which can ruin your plans. “Given recent challenges with air travel, we are seeing more and more passengers opt for travel insurance,” Haas said. “Travel Insurance is such a valuable resource for air travelers, because it provides financial benefits for lost or delayed luggage, flight cancellations, and flight delays of as little as three hours.” More People are Gifting Experiences Instead of Presents AAA travel advisors say they’re seeing more people gift travel experiences to loved ones instead of presents. That means those people are already thinking about the holidays. “I just booked travel for one family who’s surprising their children on Christmas morning with a trip to Disney World, leaving later that same day! That family was sure to book early to get exactly what they wanted,” said Cady DeBlois, a Travel Advisor for AAA. YOLO (You Only Live Once) is Replacing Bucket Lists After three years of a pandemic, many travelers are tackling their bucket lists now! “I’ve had travelers tell me, I don’t know what my health will be in 5 or 10 years, let’s go abroad this year,” said Jodi Abata, AAA Travel Advisor, who frequently books international trips for AAA members. “There seems to be a sense of adventure from more people now. They don’t want to delay travel any longer.” Europe, Cruises, and Theme Parks Sell Out in Advance European travel is booming this year, and the holidays will be no exception. AAA Travel Advisors say touring Christmas markets in Europe is extremely popular and itineraries sell out in advance. River cruises are also in high demand during the holidays, along with Caribbean cruises. Theme parks are a holiday favorite among families with kids when students are on winter break. DeBlois added, “I’ve already booked theme park vacations for Christmas 2024! That’s how eager many families are to get their holiday plans on the books.” < Previous News Next News >

  • Always Remember: The Cuban-American Experience By Marilyn Morales

Always Remember: The Cuban-American Experience By Marilyn Morales November 10, 2023 Share Cuban-Born American Marilyn Morales has written the definitive and timeless musical about the Cuban-American Experience – which speaks to the ageless plight of all refugees. This epic work is a love letter to all people who have sought liberty – and will be enjoyed by audiences for generations to come! Always Remember! This epic full-scale work is a love letter to all people who have sought liberty. The intriguing narrative, unforgettable songs, rich original musical score, bold dialogue and dance combine to make a thrilling live experience that will be enjoyed by audiences for generations to come! A Message From the Creator I lived this. My beloved family, much like the Santos family in Always Remember, left Cuba with nothing more than the clothes we were wearing and one suitcase of personal belongings for the five of us. This work is dedicated to my parents and to the countless refugees who have made the greatest personal sacrifices for the hope of a better future for their children. While the story is a fiction, every single scene, dialogue and word in this show comes from my experience or a family member's story – or from well-researched documented accounts. As a narrative of our Cuban Culture, I have been writing the story of Always Remember my entire life. And now, with the eyes of the world taking a hard look at the Cuban-American experience, the time is now for this to see the light of day. At intermissions and following showcase performances, I have been deeply gratified to receive very emotional responses from fellow Cuban refugees - as well as those from other countries. I am happy to say that my story appears to be resonating with those who have attended the showcases so far. From an overarching artistic perspective, I sought to craft this work in the grand tradition of the classic and enduring musicals. This is an honest work, as it is the work of my life - my Magnum Opus. There are 23 songs in Always Remember. The styles that I employ, i.e. Guaguanco, Mambo, Rumba, Tango and, contrastingly, Salsa, Rock Ballade, Broadway-Style Numbers and Incidental Music have been painstakingly integrated into the fabric of the story. I am very lucky to have connected with an extraordinary team of artists and technicians, who have been faithful to the vision of Always Remember. My husband Kirk is my Arranging Assistant and Dialogue Consultant. Theatrical Consultant Michael Duarte, Fine Arts Specialist Lilia Fontana, Actor and Director Brad Shank, Vocal Coach Manny Perez and Public Relations Specialist Arely Ruiz are just the tip of the iceberg of talented and passionate professionals who have advised me on my journey. My motivation to create Always Remember came from my time in California in the 1990’s. I was exasperated from hearing so many uninformed people tell me how "wonderful things are in Cuba." My angst got the best of me, and I decided to communicate the story of many Cuban refugees in the best way I know: through the organic fusion of music, lyrics and story. I longed to create a story, score and set of songs that could stand the test of time against the likes of West Side Story, The Sound of Music, Madame Butterfly and other musicals and operas I cherished from childhood. In the grander context of my life, the creation of this show is allowing me to express myself in every way possible. I am telling the story of my life and that of many fellow Cubans, and I have created a musical I believe in with all my heart. The performance will be held on Saturday, January 13th, 2024 - 8:00 p.m., at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. • Five Tips To Help You Choose Your 2025 Health Benefits

Five Tips To Help You Choose Your 2025 Health Benefits BPT November 21, 2024 Share As millions of Americans evaluate their health plan options during this fall's open enrollment season, a new survey finds that 3 in 5 Americans incorrectly defined key health care terms. This knowledge gap may result in less-than-ideal selections, which could cause you to miss out on plans that might better suit your needs and offer potential cost savings. Enrollment timing: For people with coverage from their employer, open enrollment typically happens during a two-or three-week period between September and December. For those eligible for Medicare, the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15th to December 7th each year. For people shopping for individual plans on the Health Insurance Marketplace, open enrollment began on November 1st, 2024 and ends on January 15th, 2025, in most states. Here are a few tips to consider when choosing a plan that may help lead you to better health and cost savings: 1. Plan ahead. Take time to understand the benefits, services and costs of plans available - including what might have changed with your current coverage. Pay attention to more than just the monthly premium, also understanding what Out-Of-Pocket costs like deductibles, copays and coinsurance you may be responsible for. Resources like: www.JustPlainClear.com and: www.MedicareMadeClear.com can provide valuable assistance. Medicare members and caregivers: As you weigh your options, assess the differences between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage. Visit: www.MedicareEducation.com to find answers to questions about eligibility, plan choices, prescription coverage and more. 2. Help prevent unexpected costs. Check if your doctor is in your plan's provider network, since visiting in-network providers can help reduce Out-Of-Pocket Costs. Make sure your medications will be covered next year by the plan you choose. And consider filling your prescriptions at an in-network pharmacy or with home delivery - more cost-efficient options. Medicare members and caregivers: Original Medicare doesn't generally cover prescription drugs. Consider enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage to help keep medication costs in check. 3. Explore mental health coverage. Beyond in-person mental health care, you may have access to a virtual network of therapists and psychiatrists, along with advocates to help find the right behavioral health care or resources. Medicare members and caregivers: Look for plans that offer virtual mental health care with a $0 copay. 4. Look into specialty benefits. Additional benefits, such as Dental, Vision, Hearing or Critical Illness Insurance, are often available and may contribute to overall well-being. Medicare members and caregivers: Original Medicare doesn't cover most Dental, Vision and Hearing Services, but many Medicare Advantage plans do. 5. Consider wellness programs. Many health plans offer incentives for taking healthier actions, like completing a health survey or exercising. Others provide personalized support to those living with common chronic conditions like Type 2 Diabetes. Medicare members and caregivers: Many Medicare Advantage plans offer gym memberships and wellness programs for members at no additional cost.
