- Paving The Way To A Better Future: Budget Workshops & Discussions Are Underway in Hallandale Beach
Paving The Way To A Better Future: Budget Workshops & Discussions Are Underway in Hallandale Beach By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper August 31, 2023 Share In last week's article, I made a presentation about the Budget and changes that may occur during the Workshop. Our Budget was passed unanimously, and we actually did have a robust conversation about Repaving Roadways. We all have been hearing complaints about the neglected Roadways. For years before COVID-19 our City always had a Program where we would Repave Roadways in each Quadrant in a rotational manner. For the past years no repaving has been budgeted for or taken place. Our City then, like all others, had to deal with the financial uncertainty brought on by the COVID-19 Pandemic. In the past we utilized money from our Transportation Fund. This Fund has never been a large Fund and consists of a small portion of Gas Taxes. Any additional funding had to come from our General Fund. Not all streets are City streets, some are State Roads and County Roads that are refurbished and partnered with Broward County. Broward County gets the lion share of all Gas Taxes. Last year we put Repaving back in the Budget and allocated $500,000 to Repave Roads that were not slated for Underground Infrastructure Improvements. The schedule was posted, and the contractor began to asphalt the scheduled roads. In abundance of caution due to various procurement rules and regulations the work was stopped. Staff worked with our legal and procurement departments to address how we could Budget and plan this work in the most Efficient and Cost-Effective Way. During this Budget Workshop it was confirmed that we will be able to start Repaving throughout the City and now the Fund will be $1,000,000. Repaving should begin in January. Commissioner Butler brought forth a discussion based on the fact that we are looking at a Stable Budget. Is there any way that we can put more money into Repaving? Many residents, particularly in the Golden Isles Area, have been requesting and waiting for Repaving for years. We all pay the same Millage Rate but that does not mean we pay the same amount in Taxes. New residents that have moved in are paying over $75,000 a year simply in Taxes and are frustrated. Ironically three years ago there was $100,000 I had requested in the GI Safe Neighborhood District that was proposed by the Advisory Board to seal the streets. The GISND is a separate Taxing District that is only paid for by the residents that live in that District. The City Commission agreed that pretty much every Road needs to be Paved since it hadn't been done in quite some time. We also agreed that if we are digging up Roadways for Underground Infrastructure it seems to be foolish to put down brand new asphalt and then just dig it up to patch it. So, the debate became how do we Amend the Budget or add to it. On the Western Side of the City there's going to be over $20 Million in CRA Community Redevelopment Dollars redoing Sidewalks, Lighting and Trees. Golden Isles or Three Islands Safe Neighborhood Districts are looking at similar plans but do not have the benefit of a CRA. Funding for projects East of 14th Avenue must come from other Revenues such as the General Fund, Transportation Fund, Grants or directly from the Residents living in those Districts. At the end of a robust debate consensus was reached that Staff can expedite and move forward without the detriment to any other projects we would support Repaving Roads that were not planned to be dug up. Staff were directed to work on programming and scheduling. On another note, I asked when they were going to be Repairing Hallandale Beach Boulevard. This Road is a State Road. Director of Public Works Jeff Odoms informed us that he believes it is slated for refurbishment, but we'll be requesting from the Florida Department of Transportation what date it is slated for. There were not many more discussions during this Budget Workshop. As I wrote last week we Budget all year and work on the area's topics. The first Budget Hearing is scheduled on Friday, September 13th, 2023 at 5:05 p.m. and the final Budget Hearing is scheduled on Tuesday, September 26th, 2023 at 5:05 p.m. Both meetings are at City Hall located at 400 South Federal Highway, Hallandale Beach, Florida 33009. Every resident is encouraged to come out to participate or watch the meeting live. - Resume Rejections: Expert Warns That Florida Job Candidates Are Sabotaging Their Careers By Using AI
Resume Rejections: Expert Warns That Florida Job Candidates Are Sabotaging Their Careers By Using AI September 12, 2024 Share In today’s competitive job market, it’s almost expected that candidates will rely on AI Chatbots to craft their resumés and cover letters. Yet, despite the widespread adoption of tools like ChatGPT, AI might actually be a stumbling block in securing that crucial job offer. That is according to the experts at: https://Resume.io/ - who commissioned a survey of 3,000 hiring managers. The survey revealed that over one-half (51%) of Florida managers automatically dismiss resumes created using AI. “AI-generated content often contains tell-tale signs, such as overly polished or excessively detailed cover letters, and HR professionals now have access to sophisticated tools that easily identify such content,” says Resume.io Career Expert, Amanda Augustine. Beyond the immediate rejection risk, the survey unveiled deeper concerns among hiring managers. A significant 78% of managers stated that they would prefer to receive a poorly written but authentic resume over a perfectly written, yet disingenuous, AI-generated one. “Authenticity in job applications is more valued than perfection,” Augustine adds. “Employers are looking for genuine candidates, not just flawless prose.” Interestingly, when asked for advice on using AI tools for resume creation, 31% of managers recommend that candidates heavily customize AI-generated content if they choose to use it. Another 22% suggested using AI as a starting point and then seeking professional help. Only 21% of managers were in favor of fully embracing AI tools to create resumes. “The consensus is clear: If you’re going to use AI, you need to make it your own. The human touch is irreplaceable,” Augustine advises. Ethical concerns surrounding AI in resume creation were also brought to light. Nearly half (46%) of Florida respondents believed that AI could misrepresent a candidate’s true skills, while 24% felt it creates unfair advantages. “There’s a growing unease about how AI might be distorting the hiring process, leading to misalignments between a candidate's actual abilities and their AI-enhanced presentation,” says Augustine. Furthermore, the survey revealed that 62% of managers believe companies should implement policies requiring candidates to disclose if their resume was AI-generated. “Transparency is key,” Augustine emphasizes. “Candidates need to be upfront about their use of AI, and employers need to set clear expectations.” < Previous News Next News >

Among the exciting, curated selection of films from all over the world are seven revealing documentaries: Tuesday, January 27th, 2026 – Andy Kaufman Is Me Thursday, January 29th, 2026 – Speak. Saturday, January 31st, 2026 – Stever Schapiro: Being There Sunday, February 1st, 2026 – Natchez Sunday, February 1st, 2026 – Drop Dead City Monday, February 2nd, 2026 – Checkpoint Zoo Friday, February 6th, 2026 – A Man With Sole: The Impact Of Kenneth Cole “These compelling and very diverse documentaries to be screened during the Sun & Stars International Film Festival will bring the viewers into the heart of real-life stories. They include in-depth coverage of a provocative comedian, a fashionable philanthropist, a historic photographer, and precocious high school students, to films about animals surviving war and two great American cities facing change,” says Barbara Scharres, SASIFF Artistic Director. In-person encounters with filmmakers are unique situations that round out the stories and afford the viewer the rare opportunity for face-to-face dialogue with the directors of several of SASIFF’s scheduled films. The seven informative documentaries that will be shown during the upcoming Sun & Stars International Film Festival are: Andy Kaufman Is Me Documentary, 2025, Palm Beach County Premiere. Directed by Clay Tweel. USA, 101-minutes Audacious performer Andy Kaufman blazed a new trail for American comedy beginning with his guest appearance in the 1975 inaugural show of Saturday Night Live. Notoriety and fame burned brightly but he died of Cancer by the age of 35. Kaufman’s daringly over-the-top routines and impersonations: Mighty Mouse, Elvis, abrasive lounge singer Tony Clifton and the “foreign man” of sitcom Taxi made him the most unconventional of comedy stars, and one with a pronounced dark side. As chronicled through family stories, home movies, the revealing memories of personalities including David Letterman and Carol Kane, and scores of outrageously funny performance clips, Kaufman’s persona comes to life in all its in-your-face provocation. Note: Producer Shannon Riggs and Director Clay Tweel will be present for audience discussion. The Rinker Playhouse at the Kravis Center on Tuesday, January 27th, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. Checkpoint Zoo Documentary, 2024, Palm Beach County Premiere. Directed by Joshua Zeman. UK/USA, 103-minutes Exploding shells light the horizon and missiles strike within the perimeter of a popular zoo and eco-park in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, putting scores of animals from elephants and lions to penguins and amphibians in danger of imminent annihilation. While ever under fire their caretakers spring into action, mounting a massively daring rescue with improvised methods, makeshift transport, and the unlikely destination of a millionaire’s country mansion, where its myriad rooms are hurriedly spread with straw. This is an exciting yet perilous chronicle that serves as a metaphor for the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine as a small group of passionate humans risk their lives to save trapped and helpless animals in captivity. Hooky Entertainment Delray Marketplace on Monday, February 2nd, 4:00 p.m. Drop Dead City Documentary, 2024, Palm Beach County Premiere. Directed by Michael Yohatyn and Peter Yost. USA, 108-minutes Like a desperate debtor on the run from angry creditors, the city of New York in 1975 was facing down the prospect of total bankruptcy. Essential workers were laid off in droves, garbage piled high in the potholed streets while protests erupted, and the comptroller was compelled to announce that the city appeared to keep no books. Mayor Abe Beame, President Gerald Ford and a host of experts and scoundrels are the key players in this thrilling cliff-hanger tale of political hijinks and financial derring-do studded with NYC-style black humor as the crown jewel of American cities attempts to save itself from the unthinkable, complete financial ruin. According to The New Yorker, the film tells “an enormously complex story of financial fine points and political maneuvering… with a deft touch and a brisk sense of wonder.” Hooky Entertainment Delray Marketplace on Sunday, February 1st, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. A Man With Sole: The Impact Of Kenneth Cole Documentary / 2024, Palm Beach County Premiere. Directed by Dori Berinstein. USA, 104-minutes The Closing Night Screening of The Donald M. Ephraim Sun & Stars International Film Festival©, presented by MorseLife. Fashion Designer, Philanthropist and footwear purveyor Kenneth Cole knows his shoes. He also appears to know the Native American directive to walk a mile in the moccasins of others, as proven through his 40 years of attention-grabbing strategies for merging commerce and compassion to raise awareness for causes including AIDS, homelessness and LGBTQIA+ rights. From the glitter of the star-studded AIDS benefits he has mounted at the Cannes Film Festival to the humorous billboards in Times Square, Cole’s unique entrepreneurship sells a humanitarian message. Emmy-winning director Berinstein delves into Cole’s history, his passion for social justice, and the brilliantly engaging promo that makes caring as cool as buying hot designer shoes. Note: Kenneth Cole and Director Dori Berinstein will be present for audience discussion Glazer Hall in Palm Beach on Friday, February 6th, 2026, Cocktail Reception from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.; premiere screening at 7:30 p.m. Natchez Documentary, 2025, Palm Beach County Premiere. Directed by Suzannah Herbert. USA, 86-minutes Billowing hoop-skirts sway, Southern drawls charm, and opulent antebellum decor draws wows—all trademarks of plantation tourism through which the canny owners of once-crumbling historic properties have revived the economy of Natchez, Mississippi. Under the folksy facade of perfect racial harmony and entrepreneurial community spirit there lurks the remnants of an unsettled history. Director Herbert conducts one of the most fascinating and revealing documentary explorations of the year, venturing into the restored mansions where portraits of Confederate ancestors hang in honor and heirloom silver graces the table, observing way behind the scenes where the thoughts often left unsaid are inadvertently revealed. Hailed by Stephen Saito in The Moveable Fest as “one of the great documentaries of the 21st century,” NATCHEZ has won seven festival awards, including Best Documentary Feature at the Tribeca Film Festival. Hooky Entertainment Delray Marketplace on Sunday, February 1st, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. Speak. Documentary, 2025, Palm Beach County Premiere. Directed by Jennifer Tiexiera and Guy Mossman. USA, 104-minutes Acclaimed as the opening night film of the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, Speak is a dynamic high-stakes journey through the lives, challenges and ambitions of five precocious high school students as they prepare for the world’s largest oratory competition. Florida’s own Esther Oyetunji vies for a rare third national win in this veritable Olympics of the spoken word in which past winners have included Oprah, Brad Pitt, Josh Gad, and Justice Kentanji Brown Jackson. Powerful and persuasive personal essays seem ripped from the soul as the five give reasoned unabashed voice to views on subjects including disability rights, LGBTQ identity, school shootings and family suicide, exhibiting a passion and maturity clearly rooted in deep emotion and personal experience. The Rinker Playhouse at the Kravis Center on Thursday, January 29th, 2026 at 7:00 pm Steve Schapiro: Being Everywhere Documentary, 2025, North Palm Beach County Premiere. Directed by Maura Smith. USA, 90-minutes The Centerpiece Screening of The Donald M. Ephraim Sun & Stars International Film Festival©, presented by MorseLife. This fascinating film documents the firsthand stories of photographer Steve Schapiro along with his vast archive of iconic images. Over six decades, he bore witness to some of the most significant social and cultural moments in modern American history and his pictures were published in The New York Times, Life, Look, Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stone and more. His notable subjects have included Andy Warhol, Mohammad Ali, James Baldwin, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis, Rosa Parks, Ray Charles, etc., and he produced publicity stills and posters for mega-hit films like The Godfather, Taxi Driver, Midnight Cowboy, Chinatown, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Note: Director Maura Smith will be present for audience discussion. - Reconsider That Fixer Upper: Finance A Home Renovation Into Your Mortgage Application
Reconsider That Fixer Upper: Finance A Home Renovation Into Your Mortgage Application By Family Features August 24, 2023 Share For younger Homeowners and First-Time Homebuyers in particular, money is likely to be tight. When most available cash is directed to the best possible Down Payment to secure a home in a desired neighborhood, there's often little left for improvements. According to a Profile of Buyers' Home Feature Preference Report from the National Association of Realtors, 53% of Homebuyers took on a Home Improvement Project within three months of buying with Kitchen Projects being a priority for 47% of those surveyed. However, when Buyers Finance a Home Renovation into their Mortgage Application, they can broaden their options of available properties to include Fixer-Uppers that can be upgraded prior to move-in. A finance option like the Guaranteed Rate Home Renovation Loan allows Homebuyers to visualize the home they want versus the one that's listed. By rolling Renovation Costs into their Mortgage, Buyers can enjoy a home tailored to their vision while paying a little extra each month for Upgraded Windows, Siding, Decks, Kitchens, Bathrooms or a Walk-In Closet. In many cases, the project can be completed after closing but prior to moving in with Contractor commitments to stay within Budget. If Cosmetic or Structural Improvements are needed when Prospective Homeowners find a property worth bidding on, they can work with a Licensed Loan Officer to secure a Home Renovation Loan. The Borrower's choice of Contractor that meets the Lender Criteria submits an Estimate that's reviewed and validated by the Lender. Once approved and the Mortgage is closed, the Renovation can begin with costs paid upfront, added to the Loan and repaid as part of the Mortgage. Consider Renovation Projects like these: Luxury Renovations are geared toward the enjoyment of a home.
